EDITOR’S LETTER
MONEY TALKS What does healthy living mean to you? Does it start and end in the gym, or the organic produce aisle at the grocery story? Or do you take a more holistic approach? We’re constantly learning new information about how our daily lives affect our health and wellbeing, but one area nobody ever really wants to talk about it is money. This month, we lean in to it by focussing on financial wellness, a trend that teaches us how to be mindful when it comes to our money, and live better as a result. Read more about that on p.18. Speaking of making money, nothing says “hustle” more than a backpack! Women everywhere are throwing their bulky, bloated handbag like a discus and changing over to the far more functional backpack. We share our favourites with you on p.28. Feeling festive? Flip over to p.38, where we round up the region’s best wellness festivals that are worth catching a flight for. Or if you prefer staying closer to home, check out p.42 to learn how you can visit the remote Hong Kong island of Tung Ping Chau, where you’ll find some of the city’s most unique rock formations. Happy reading!

OPEN HEART, OPEN ART
We all love a good yoga practice outside the studio, but Kita Yoga has taken it up a notch by partnering with Asia Society to offer classes in an actual art exhibition. Combined with an invigorating vinyasa flow from the talented Kita instructors, this could possibly be the most memorable practice you ever have. The brainchild of entrepreneur and yoga instructor Cristina McLauchlan, Conscious Cinema uses film to build community around some of the most pressing environmental issues we face today. Partnering with The Jane Goodall Institute, the next screening will present the single-use plastics documentary Straws, which highlights the devastating effects of plastic pollution on our oceans. The viewing will be followed by a panel discussion from expert speakers, and tickets include a complimentary beverage from nonalcoholic spirit brand Seedlip. WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED
Prevention is the name of the game, at the newly opened integrative wellness centre LifeHub in Central. According to a study by HKU, almost all of us have experienced suboptimal health symptoms - such as fatigue and poor sleep, skin issues, poor immunity or low self-esteem - at some point in our lives. Through diagnostic tests that explore areas like your gut biome analysis, heavy metals and food intolerances, practitioners gain a better understanding of your overall health to treat potential problems before they arise. Treatments can range from acupuncture to bioresonance therapy, and there’s a whole menu of nutrient-rich IV drips and supplements to choose from. Depending on what ails you, clients can expect to see improved energy levels and immunity, clearer skin, better digestion and overall balance in the body. 1/F, The Loop, 33 Wellington St., Central, thelifehub.com.

FRESH CUTS Dining news that’s good for you
FRO-ZEN All-natural dessert bar Igloo has been making a name for itself on social media ever since it launched a range of nostalgic flavours including White Rabbit Candy and Horlicks. Owner and mumprepreneur Larvina Wong first fell in love with artisan gelatos on a backpacking trip to Italy, but wanted to develop flavours that would conjure up happy childhood memories of old Hong Kong. Igloo has also launched a line of vegan gelatos, made from an innovative almond milk base that doesn’t sacrifice creaminess. Flavours include creme brûlée, dark chocolate and charcoal black - a fun concoction of toasted dark chocolate, charcoal and coconut water. If you’re after a fruitier treat, try the blood orange, pineapple or lime. Perfect for your next summer time Star Ferry trip. Lower Deck, Pier 7, Star Ferry, 2656-3318, facebook.com/Igloodessertbar
POWER PLAY You won’t feel guilty about your next visit to French galette restaurant, La Creperie, with their new limitededition superfood galette. What’s so “super” about this superfood galette, you ask? To start with, it’s made from buckwheat so it’s completely gluten-free, and the toppings have been carefully selected for their proven health benefits. Avocados, eggs, and pumpkin and sunflower seeds provide essential fats while tomatoes, coriander and salad add nutrients and antioxidants to the mix. The satisfying galette is topped with a generous drizzle of yoghurt sauce which is not only lighter than a regular dressing, but also good for the gut. La Creperie’s superfood galette is available at their Sheung Wan and Wan Chai restaurants throughout June. lacreperie.com.cn/en. 12

GOING UP Radical Honesty
IRAN DEAL Not Mediterranean, but not quite Asian either, Iranian food is a rather yummy cultural collision. Loveat, on the upper slope of Graham Street in Central, is Hong Kong’s first restaurant to pay homage to traditional Iranian flavours and cooking techniques. Appetizers include stuffed vine leaves and mirza ghasemi - a smoky, grilled eggplant dish topped with a fried egg. Mains are substantial and consist largely of meat, rice or lavash bread, salad and a generous dose of the world’s most expensive spice, saffron. The traditional koobideh, grilled beef and lamb kebabs, and the Kebab Tabei, pieces of beef in a spiced tomato sauce, are popular options. No alcohol is served here but with refreshing teas and lemonades, made with a hint of mint or rose, it’s not like you’ll miss it. Enjoy the traditional decorations and ornaments, including a mirrored wall made from shards shipped in from Iran.

CAPI VALLEY If you’re embracing mindful drinking, this one’s for you. Capi is an artisanal range of mineral waters, sodas and mixers derived from natural flavours and ingredients. They’re made without artificial sweeteners, so they don’t leave you with that furry feeling in your mouth the next morning. Innovative and classic flavours alike can be drunk solo, or in a cocktail/mocktail. The Spicy Cola adds new dimension to a bog-standard rum and coke, while fruit sodas like yuzu, blood orange or grapefruit are refreshingly tart. BRITISH COMMISSION Classic British comfort food is the cornerstone of The Leah, a new restaurant and bar tucked away at Lee Garden Two in Causeway Bay. If you’re someone who believes British cuisine is bland, boring and beige, this menu might just change your mind. Inspired by Sunday flatshare cooking sessions back in his native England, Chef James Sharman has put together a menu of classics, including whole-roasted Dover sole, duck Scotch egg & soldiers, and chicken, leek and bacon pie. For pastry fiends, the buttery-soft beef wellington (pictured) is a heavenly parcel of sauteed mushrooms, Parma ham, and beef fillet, wrapped in house-made puff pastry and baked to crispy perfection. Wash it all down with one of the house cocktails, all fittingly inspired by Old Blighty, like the Camden Spritz or Cotswold-Ade. As you might have guessed, dishes here are rich and hearty, so we recommend forgetting about the calories - just close your eyes and think of England instead. 3/F, Lee Garden Two, 28 Yun Ping Rd., Causeway Bay, 2337-7651.

Gym Aesthetics Compression Leggings The Buzz: Whether you compete or just work out
for fun, fitness fans are swearing by compression garments to enhance performance and support recovery. Fashionable German fitness apparel brand, Gym Aesthetics, has recently launched its compression leggings on the Hong Kong market, with the promise of speeding up recovery times and reducing muscle soreness. The Product: Based on existing medical compression
products, GA’s leggings have a two-way support system that offers the wearer benefits during both exercise and recovery. They feature similar technology as medical grade compression products and help improve stability in the leg joints and muscles as well as enhancing circulation. The Verdict: Compression products
can range from hardly noticeable to boa-constrictor tight, but these fit somewhere in between. They don’t restrict motion or cause discomfort, yet you can feel where GA have placed additional support around the knee and hip joints to maximise stability. They also look great in the gym or out on the trails, teamed with a loose workout top or sports bra. The Cost: The women’s leggings
cost $580 and the men’s cost $630. Available from July at gymaesthetics.com, or email gymaestheticsasia@gmail for pre-order and get an $80 discount and free shipping.
Opulence Luminosity Facial at Flawless Spa The Buzz: We love summertime, but we definitely don’t
love the increased UV exposure on our faces every day. When your skin spends too much time in the sun, it produces an excess of melanin that can leave you looking red and uneven in tone. Flawless Spa’s Opulence Luminosity facial promises to treat the cause of hyperpigmented skin, giving a radiant, even skin tone. The Treatment: Our facialist begins with a quick
conversation about our skin and problem areas. After cleansing and a gentle scrub, she opens up our pores for some light extraction. This is followed by the star of the show: Intraceuticals oxygen infusion technology. This Australian skincare brand uses a combination of pressurised oxygen and specialised serums to blast deep into your pores with an oxygen-puffing tool that’s not unlike an airbrush. With slow, firm strokes that feel like a cool pressure on the face, our facialist focuses on problem areas, delivering a mighty cocktail of peptide, botanical brighteners, and skincare super-ingredient vitamin C. The Verdict: Our skin is sparkling after a 50-minute
treatment, and a comparison of before and after pictures taken on our phone confirm a marked reduction in redness. Not only that, skin feels and looks plumper, bolstered by a mega-hydrating serum. This is definitely one to come back to again and again to keep that complexion glowing and radiant throughout the summer. Price: Costs $1,480 for a 50-minute treatment. 4/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St., Central, 2869-5868, flawless.hk.com.

MOVES When it comes to achieving inner peace, the last thing any of us want on our minds is the cold, hard realities of cash. That could be a serious miscalculation, though. Carla Thomas learns more about how financial wellness can leave you feeling a whole lot better.

W
hen Maggie Wu started her own fashion business in 2017, she knew it would mean making some serious changes in her life. But rather than looking at her day-to-day business operations or her bottom line, she found herself turning inwards and reflecting on her own attitude towards money. “Since my personal wellbeing is so closely tied to my business, I knew in order for my business to do well, I had to be well - and be in control of my own finances,” she explains. Motivated by the arrival of the American tax season, Wu signed up for a workshop in financial wellness, a trend that’s catching on among young professionals who increasingly view their finances as an integral part of their wellbeing.
WHAT IS FINANCIAL WELLNESS? Financial wellness treats your personal finances like any other area of your life that should be managed for optimal health. Just like setting aside time to meditate, read, or eat your veg, financial wellness posits that you approach your money as mindfully as everything else in your life in order to reap the positive benefits of financial security. Maggie Wu
“Just like a healthy person is positively energised, feels good daily, and isn’t concerned or worried each day about feeling sick, tired or in pain… a financially healthy person is someone who feels at peace with what they have,” says Sam Lau, the managing director of Total Loyalty Company, a human resources management firm that specialises in employee wellness programmes, and has worked with a growing number of corporates to offer financial wellness services. “Financial wellness is about one’s feeling of ‘healthiness’ when it comes to the amount of money you have, and your ability to accumulate to meet one’s needs.” 20

For Wu, that meant changing her mindset and learning how to reframe her attitude towards money. “I always thought financial management was this monstrous, scary task that I had no ability to tackle, hence why I had always avoided it before.”
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS Wu enrolled in a series of workshops with Heels & Yield, a Hong Kong-based financial education and coaching service that caters primarily to women. The company’s founder, Angelina Yao, is a former investment analyst who saw a gap in the market for professional women seeking

more guidance in this area. “Society is embracing this idea of ‘holistic health’, where you want to focus on not just physical health, but your mental, your psychological, your bodily fitness, and many other areas,” says Yao. She believes the same can be applied to financial planning and management, in what she calls “holistic wealth.” “It’s not just your money. It’s also your psychological wellbeing, your social wellbeing, your emotional wellbeing, and your spiritual wellbeing - because those things are all tied in with money.” 21

Seeing the connection between mental health and financial stability, more and more companies are starting to offer financial wellness programmes to their employees, with reported effects like decreased stress rates, improved productivity, reduced absenteeism and lower employee turnover. As the leading cause of stress, money is critically linked to most people’s overall health and life satisfaction. That’s why feeling positive about your financial situation is an important part of achieving long-term health outcomes. “Especially in Asia, a lot of people think about ‘financial’ as just money and that’s it… but I think the link is important,” says Yao. “When you’re stressed out about money, then the decisions that you make usually affect other areas of life.”
“ THE LINK BETWEEN STRESS AND MONEY A recent survey by insurance company Cigna showed that nine out of 10 Hongkongers reported feeling stressed. The same study showed that globally and in Hong Kong, the number one cause of stress was personal finances. “Feeling out of control of your personal finances can have many different implications on physical and mental well-being,” says Patrick Graham, CEO Asia Pacific at Cigna International Markets. “If you are worried about not being able to pay the rent, it’s going to have an impact on your ability to concentrate. Or perhaps it results in people working jobs they actively dislike but are too afraid to change.” 22

MAKE MONEY MOVES So what does financial wellness actually entail? As a first step, think about the goals you have for yourself, both short and longterm. These can be more immediate, like taking a holiday or buying a handbag, or they can involve long-term planning, like saving for a home or your retirement. Yao recommends having six months of savings to cover your core expenses, like rent and utilities, so this is another target you can slowly work towards every month. Next, it’s important to gain clarity on what money is coming in and going out. Track your expenses, and take note of areas
that you could easily cut back on. Eating out regularly can burn a lot of money, for example, so try to prepare more meals at home and bring a lunch to work. Yao steers clear of providing financial advice to her clients, supporting them instead to understand overall strategies and tools that will allow them to save and invest their money in a low-stress, manageable environment. The overall goal is to empower women with better habits around their money, giving them both the material means as well as the tools to achieve their long-term goals and life satisfaction.

SOUND AS A POUND Tips to get you feeling financially confident
• Download a moneytracking app like Planto or Gini
“Before the program, I always avoided talking about finances with my husband, even though we’d been married for two years,” says Wu, who says she felt “inadequate” when it came to managing their finances. “This has completely shifted. Now I’m the one initiating the conversation, and talking about what we should do in terms of our finances.” While everyone’s financial situation is different, Yao says there are some easy first steps that anyone can take to get them started down the path of money mindfulness. Using an app to track outgoing expenses from your bank account, for example, is a free and easy trick to spot where your money is going every month. Once you’ve figured out how much disposable income you have every month, don’t just let it sit in your bank account; set up a savings account that earns you interest on what you’re putting aside. You can also consider using a robo-advisor, which uses algorithms and AI to invest your money every month. It’s simple money management steps like these that can have a knock-on effect to the rest of your life, according to Yao, as knowledge leads to empowerment. “We focus on helping people achieve financial clarity, financial competence and financial confidence.” 24
• Aim to put around 6% of your salary towards retirement
• Invest a small amount, say 100USD per month, into a robo-advisor like Aqumon
• Set up an automatic transfer to regularly move money from your paycheck into your savings account
• Pay off credit cards in full every month, and ask your card provider to lower your credit limit

COMEBACK OF THE BACKPACK
F
or far too long, women have been shouldering a burden too heavy to bear any longer. We’re not talking about PMS or pay gap - we’re talking handbags. Once you’ve packed a purse with everything you’ll need for a busy day - laptop, lunch, makeup, gym clothes - a satchel or tote becomes an albatross over your shoulder that can cause persistent back pain. Tired of the urban sherpa lifestyle, more and more women are turning to backpacks to help carry the load; sales of women’s backpacks rose 28 percent last year, according to market research. If you’re feeling a bit weighed down by your current set-up, give the double-shoulder lifestyle a go with one of these stylish solutions.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT:
UPLIFTERS
H
ong Kong has just shy of 400,000 foreign domestic helpers, many of whom are on the lowest rungs of the economic ladder in one of the world’s most expensive cities. And while their wages are low, their risk of falling into debt or prey to a scam are disconcertingly high. That’s what local NGO Uplifters seeks to change, by giving Hong Kong’s foreign domestic workers (FDWs) access to critical information about how to manage their money safely. By Carla Thomas
32
Q What does Uplifters do? Uplifters helps to empower foreign domestic workers by providing free financial literacy and self-development programs online. We help FDWs acquire healthy money management habits to help them achieve their dreams. In the process, they also become part of a community of workers who are supporting each other positively to reach their personal and financial goals, and make the most of their stay abroad. Q Explain what “money management” means. What we mean by money management is becoming the real boss of yourself, and not letting other people decide what happens to your hard-earned money. It’s also knowing how to make money work for you, so you can invest in productive assets and retire without being dependent on your children.
Community
Q What kinds of unique financial issues do FDWs have that other people don’t? So many! First, they have to borrow between four to six months of salary to pay an agency just to come work abroad. Imagine if you had to pay even just one month’s salary to get a job, you would think it’s outrageous! Many of them migrate because of poverty or lack of opportunities in their home countries, and they are the safety nets for their relatives but they have no safety nets for themselves. If they face any emergency they have to borrow money. They’re only able to access loans with a 40 percent interest rate per annum on average, and it easily triggers a debt cycle, where they must keep borrowing money to pay back previous loans. A recent survey showed that over 83 percent of domestic workers in Hong Kong are in some level of debt.
FDWs more than 10 percent of a month’s salary to come abroad, but not for agencies in their home countries. As an employer, you have an important role to play by choosing an agency which guarantees the domestic worker doesn’t pay fees in her home country. They are also the victims of investment scams and unscrupulous people taking advantage of their vulnerable situations. As a responsible employer, have a discussion with your domestic worker about her financial situation. We also have a Facebook support group for employers to help them develop a positive win-win relationship with their helper, see more at https://tinyurl.com/y5234y2x.
Over 83 percent of domestic workers in Hong Kong are in some level of debt.
Q What skills do you teach your clients and how do these skills help them in the long run? We believe money management comes hand in hand with empowerment. On top of managing their money, we teach our beneficiaries a lot of personal growth skills, including emotional intelligence to overcome life hardships, selfconfidence and communication skills to communicate better with their families in their home countries about their personal and financial goals. Q What can anyone employing a foreign domestic worker do to help protect them from financial abuse? It’s actually illegal in Hong Kong for agencies to charge
Q How can readers support your charity? You can sponsor a domestic worker through our money management and personal growth program for just $80. For the same as two coffees at Starbucks or one glass of wine in a bar, you can help someone access a life-changing experience.
Q What can we expect to see from Uplifters in 2019? We want to offer more courses, especially vocational courses, to help domestic workers upgrade their skills and better meet employer needs. For example, we’re launching a baby care online course, designed by a pediatrician, for anyone working for families with little ones. Participants on the course are supported in a group environment to learn, and are able to ask any questions to a team of midwives and paediatric nurses.

THE GLOW UP
News from the beauty aisle
WAXING LYRICAL Looking to fight the fuzz? Make sure to prep your skin first for a fuss-free wax that will last for weeks.
CHECK YOURSELF
Check your skin before your appointment. Broken skin or inflammation needs time to heal and if you have moles or beauty marks, point them out so the therapist can avoid or protect them.
LET IT GO
Keep hair long enough so the wax can grip and pull it out, but not so long that it causes more pain than necessary. Two to three weeks of growth is usually best for leg, underarm and bikini hair.
PREP YOURSELF
Gently exfoliate your skin at least a day or two before your appointment. Not only does it help tease out those ingrowns, but it also encourages the wax to grab hair rather than skin. Use a rough washcloth or natural scrub in the shower.
AFTERCARE
Wait at least four to six weeks before scheduling your next wax. In between sessions, regular exfoliation and moisturisation helps maintain soft, fuzz-free skin. Remember, no sunbathing for at least 48 hours after a wax as the skin will be extra sensitive. 36

A SHAVING GRACE Now that it’s well and truly shorts weather, let’s talk legs. Shaving your legs with disposable razors may seem like a convenient solution for prickly pins, but all the plastic waste that comes with it adds up. This old-school brass shaver from local brand Bareaya is 100% plastic-free and reusable for years to come. Safety razors like these are fitted with a protective device between the blade and the skin to ensure a close shave without hurting yourself. Blades are made with high-quality stainless steel, meaning you need just one instead of two or three, and you won’t need to press or go over an area multiple times to see results – bye-bye, razor burn! It’s a snap to change blades, which are recyclable unlike plastic/metal cartridge heads. The classy design and colour options (white, black or rose gold) make your standard Gillette seem downright garish by comparison. Best of all are the long-term shavings – sorry, savings – of a safety razor, with refill blades costing a fraction of plastic razors. Works with any universal, double-edge blade, which are available online from Bareaya or Amazon, or in any zero-waste shop. Costs around $350 (plus shipping), and ships entirely plastic-free. bareaya.com.hk.

THE RAINFOREST WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL AUGUST 1-4
WILDERNESS FESTIVAL If you’re heading to the UK this summer, it’s well worth checking out this award-winning boutique festival set amid the classic British countryside of Oxfordshire. A celebration of arts, music, theatre, food and general wellbeing, this four-day event is absolutely stacked with performances, workshops and activities to keep you engaged and enlightened. Percolate in a wood-fired hot tub at the Lakeside Spa, try your hand at axe-throwing, or just shimmy it out on the dancefloor - this year’s lineup includes not-to-be-missed headliners like Groove Armada, Bombay Bicycle Club and Robyn. There’s also oodles of yoga classes and other wellness avocations, like meditation, Tai Chi and tarot reading to keep those chakras in check.
It’s good vibes all round at this renowned festival, which brings indigenous acts from all over the world to perform at the Sarawak Cultural Village in the heart of the virgin Borneo rainforest. Established in 1998 with a goal of celebrating nature, the festival now offers an extensive wellness program, with fitness, dance, yoga and martial arts classes all on offer. Once you’ve gotten your fill, you’ll find plenty to do in the surrounding area, from visiting Gunung Mt. Santubong National Park for a hike up Mt. Fair warning: with speakers hailing from fields as diverse as “Energy Medicine” and “applied integrative biophysics,” this festival is firmly on the crunchier end of the granola spectrum. newearthfestival.com. 40

L
antau, Lamma, Cheung Chau, Peng Chau... Hong Kong has lots of gloriously green islands to explore. But Tung Ping Chau is one-of-a-kind. About a 1.5-hour ferry journey from Ma Liu Shui pier in eastern Mirs Bay, the 1.1-square-kilometer island is closer to mainland China than Hong Kong - in fact, you can see Shenzhen’s skyscrapers just across the water. We’ll admit it’s a little rough around the edges, but Tung Ping Chau overdelivers when it comes to peace, quiet and gin-clear water. Whether you’re here to admire ancient sandstone formations or snorkel up a storm, this micro-adventure is worth the legwork.
ROCK OUT Part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, the island promises an incredibly photogenic landscape. Among the surreal rock formations, which date to the Paleogene period (roughly 55 million years ago), look for pancake-like stacks, wave-cut cliffs, “fish scale” shales and enormous “bean curd rocks” that you can use as stepping stones.
TAKE A HIKE Circling the entire island, the three-hour Country Trail passes a leafy ancestral graveyard, a semi-abandoned hamlet and the 18th century Tin Hau Temple before veering onto a stony beach. Around the corner, Kang Lau Shek - a pair of 25-foot-tall watchtower sea stacks - offer great views of the water. Heading into the densely forested hills, cicadas hum in unison and swallowtail butterflies flutter overhead. Then comes Cham Ken Chau, a beautiful gorge that cuts through the cliffs. After the trail curves around the north side, you’ll end up on a soft, silvery beach where gentle waves lap at the coast. 42
Travel
TIME TRAVEL The island might seem pretty deserted now if the dozens of empty stone houses are any indication - but it wasn't always that way. Tung Ping Chau served as a thriving fishing community in the early 1900s, home to up to 3,000 people in its heyday. Today, aggressive banyan vines have all but taken over, however you can still picture what life might have been like while wandering through the tiny villages such as Sha Tau, a few minutes’ walk west of the ferry pier.
DIVE RIGHT IN On the eastern coast, Cheung Sha Wan has some of the clearest water we’ve seen in Hong Kong. Catch a tan on the long crescent beach or head underwater to explore the coral reef. Part of a protected marine park, the waters around the island contain more than 80 species of coral and 130 types of reef fish. Local outfits like Tung Ping Chau Divers’ Paradise can organise a private snorkelling or diving tour with all the gear - visit tpcdive.com for more info.
DINE BY THE SEA On weekends, lots of snack stalls and dai pai dongs set up shop across the coastline. Sunshine Store in Tai Tong village, right by Cheung Sha Wan beach, is particularly good, serving up huge servings of chicken wings, salt and pepper shrimp and uni fried rice. Don’t miss the cheery cafe’s signature grass jelly drinks - a perfect antidote to the summer swelter.
PITCH A TENT There are no hotels on the island and guesthouses are limited, but you can pitch a tent with pre-approval from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. There’s a basic campsite featuring barbecue pits, picnic tables, and lots of shade - but be sure to pack your own tent and loads of bug repellant.
GET THERE The journey is a memorable one. With just three ferries a day on weekends and public holidays (departing at 9am and 3:30pm; returning at 5:15pm), you can’t risk missing the boat. Expect to pay HK$90 via cash or Octopus card for a round-trip ticket.

This month, we’re making light work of family travel, grabbing a bite to eat with a very hungry literary icon, and discovering a new game that helps neuro-diverse children build social skills.
CORE STRENGTH Developed to help kids on the autism spectrum develop their communication and cooperation skills, fantasy roleplaying game Critical Core will have the entire family hooked without a screen in sight. This tabletop game encourages children to enter a shared world of fantasy, consequence and problemsolving, working as a team to complete epic quests and monster battles. Equally suitable for kids on the autism spectrum as those who are neuro-typical, the game is played in groups of three to four, and is aimed at a cognitive age of 10 and over. The game is currently available for preorder via Kickstarter, with various perks and extras on offer to early backers. Costs: Pledges start from US$30 (HK$236) and up. For more information visit kickstarter.com.
THEY SEE ME STROLLIN’ Confession time: I have owned no less than five strollers for my two children. In my defence, I just never found one that ticked all the boxes - until the Babyzen Yoyo+. This super-light urban pushchair is the perfect travel companion, as you can stash it in a plane’s overhead bins as hand luggage. No more waiting at the door with an angry, jetlagged tot only to discover your stroller is already at the baggage carousel. Add a rolling bag for up to 10kg more hands-free storage, and you’re all set for speedy boarding. Costs: Stroller from $4,100; rolling bag $750. For retailers, visit babyzen.com.
FEELING PECKISH? The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show is coming to Hong Kong this June. Bringing Eric Carle’s 1969 classic about the famously famished bug to life with 75 captivating puppets, the show also features characters from Brown Bear, Brown Bear, The Very Lonely Firefly and 10 Little Rubber Ducks – essentially a complete works for the preschool crowd. With a toddler-friendly running time of 60 minutes and a four-for-three ticket deal for Thursday and Friday performances, this is a great way to introduce your little ones to the magic of theatre. Costs: $195-435, depending on seats; multi-buy discounts are available. Book via hkticketing.com.
