EDITOR’S LETTER
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH...
Everyone’s talking about Resilience right now - that series of traits that enable you to bounce back when times get tough. But what exactly is it, and how can we get some? In this issue of Liv Magazine, we speak to two seriously inspiring ladies, who faced down personal and professional challenges, and with grit and determination, came out the other side. We also learn a little more about what resilience exactly means, and also learn a few strategies for coping when times get tough. Read all about it on p.20. Elsewhere, white collar boxer Lisa Twinley has laced up her gloves and thrown a few punches at some of the city’s best boxing gyms, to find out what they each have to offer. If you’ve ever been tempted to step into the ring but didn’t know where to start, look no further (p.30). We love The Curated Books, a cool new idea that encourages customers to put down their phones and pick up a book instead. This company will select and ship you a selection of great reads - plus a few snacks - to really bring the pleasure back to reading. Learn all about it on p.11. Happy reading!
MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS Our writer Zoe Belhomme headed to Bali to try out a new wellness retreat founded by two HKbased entrepreneurs, p.38. Need to keep the tykes occupied this summer? Kate Farr has summer camps and playrooms galore, p.46.
Still planning what to do this summer? Kate Springer discovers the latest in wellness travel, p.42. From new hotel spas to cool online shops for organic treats, Rachel Read finds the best in beauty news, p.36.

FUTURE TROUSERS
Waste in the fashion industry remains a huge issue, but US/HK-based robotics and apparel company, Unspun, is using tech to reduce waste, starting with everyone’s wardrobe staple: denim jeans. First, customers have their exact measurements and specifications taken via a 3D body scan - there are already scanning stations in the US and there will be stations popping up in Hong Kong in the near future before selecting their preferred style and colour. Jeans are then made to order so all you have to do is wait for them to be delivered. Unspun jeans are made from 100 percent sustainable denim from Italy and can be reordered online using your online profile. www.denimunspun.com.

Inspired by nightclub boxing trends popular in America and the UK, Lights Out delivers a unique high-intensity boxing and fitness workout choreographed to pumping tunes for the ultimate party atmosphere. The 45-minute classes consist of eight separate rounds alternating between boxing on aqua bags, and floor workouts such as HIIT or strength and conditioning training that gradually increase in intensity. To make things even easier, visual cues are projected onto the wall to keep you on track while trainers keep you motivated. A five-class package costs $270 per class, but for a limited period, trial sessions are available for $150. 3/F, Block C, Sea View Estate, 8 Watson Rd., North Point, www.lightsouthk.com. 11

HEAR ME RAW Raw dining has been around for a while, so we were intrigued to see it enter the mainstream with Aqua’s new 42 Degrees menu, in which everything has been “cooked” over a very low heat to delicately preserve the freshness of their beautiful produce. Inspired by classic Italian flavours, head chef Alberto uses innovative, pioneering preparation methods to create his collection of five new dishes, timed to offer a cooling respite from Hong Kong’s hot and humid summer months. Highlights include a tomato, smoked sardine, burrata and watermelon salad ($198), where the tomato’s famed red colour is separated from the fruit and extracted to make a clear gelatina. This is complemented by a selection of fresh watermelon, avocado, sun-dried tomatoes and burrata. Don’t miss the prawn tartare cannelloni with caviar and sea urchin ($298), filled with a red and white prawn tartare and finished with a sour cream garnish of sea urchin, salmon caviar and roe. 29/F -30F, One Peking, Tsim Sha Tsui, 3427-2288, www.aqua.com.hk.

WORKOUT
New Collection at 9 to 6 Life The Buzz: This Hong Kong-based e-commerce site is all about work-life balance and wellness, offering natural skincare, organic teas and premium work-to-leisure wear that encourages you to take things slow. Now they offer a new collection - 9 TO 6 CLASSICS, which uses Italian fabrics to create premium work wear. The Collection: We were sent three pieces: a square silk scarf, a black floral playsuit, and a lace-embellished shirt in neutral white. We loved the playful peekaboo accents on the top and playsuit, and both outfits can be dressed up with a jacket, or dressed down for a brunch date. The painterly floral print reminded us of vintage botany paintings and we were impressed by the quality of the fabric. The Verdict: We were wowed by the designs, the quality and the versatility. As we all look to consume less, finding quality, wearable pieces that will last for a few years is the new alternative to fast fashion. With prices coming in at around $2,000 for a dress and $1,000 for a top, it’s a fair price to pay for quality. www.9to6life.com.
Pilates Allegro Class at Flex The Buzz: Flex studio continues to go from strength
to strength, and has now opened up a brand-new, dedicated Pilates floor on its Wyndham Street location. We got to try a class with Flex founder Heather Thomas Shalabi. The Class: We walked into to the brand new studio,
which was immaculate and filled with all kinds of Pilates contraptions. Heather put us right to work, teaching us the perfect techniques and explaining how the reformers work to keep our positions just so to work the right kinds of muscles. We focused a lot on core work, which was pretty gruelling at times, but got easier once Heather explained that it’s all about the right technique - it shouldn’t hurt your neck! The Verdict: We can see why Pilates has endured in
popularity. It offers a no-nonsense, anatomicallybased approach to body conditioning, and is perfect for post-injury rehabilitation. Heather is simply fabulous. She explains concepts really well, and can keep you going through even the most challenging drills. Price: A trio class is $485 per person. 3F and 4F Man Cheung Building, 15-17 Wyndham St., Central, 2813-2399, flexhk.com. 16
ALL ABOUT YOU CENTRE
Love your inner-child
Inner children are created when we are incomplete with a situation of past; when we experience this, a part of us gets frozen and stays with the emotion and trauma of the past. The impact of this is that the trauma doesn’t go - when we are faced with a similar situation, it acts as a trigger and brings up the same pain and trauma again. Only if we are conscious and heal these parts of us, we can be in control and face situations as the mature adult of today. All About You offers private sessions, meditations and workshops to acknowledge and heal your relationship with your inner child. ARE YOU
? T N E I L I S E R Resilience. Everyone’s talking about how to thrive, despite - or perhaps even because of - life’s challenges. We speak to two incredibly resilient Hongkongers, who faced up to immense hurdles and came out fighting.
W
e all know the importance of a healthy body, but until very recently, few have spoken openly about the importance of mental health. That’s all changing though, as more of us are ready to have conversations about stress, wellbeing, and - the current popular term - resilience. “Put simply, ‘resilience’ can be described as the absence of negative outcomes, or even the presence of positive outcomes, in the wake of adversity. It’s why some people come through hard times in better shape than others.” says Nicholas Anderson, a certified coach and counsellor and partner at Forge, a psychological wellness consultancy. So what is resilience, exactly? “It’s really important that we acknowledge that resilience is not a single innate trait or characteristic. Often, we find that people are resilient in some situations, but may be less resilient in others,” Anderson adds. Your resilience is influenced by what’s known as “protective factors,” which can be different for everyone. For example, a sense of optimism is one protective factor. One person’s failure is another person’s learning opportunity and the good news is that you can learn this type of thinking. Exercise is another: the link between a healthy mind and a healthy body is proven to be strong.” Having a supportive network of friends and loved ones is key. “Focusing on building deeper positive relationships is just as important as working on our own thoughts, feelings and behaviours,” Anderson says. In short, avoid isolating yourself and build a network of loved ones to help carry you through tough times.
20
So if you are going through a period of stress, when should you seek help? “if you notice changes in your sleep patterns, a lower mood or mood swings, anger, lacking motivation or sustained periods of feeling sad, then you would probably benefit from talking to an expert. It’s what they are there for,” Anderson suggests. “I think mental health and wellbeing is finally starting to get the level of recognition it deserves. I also hope that more people feel that it is ok to speak up and seek help. Just to remind everyone that not coping is ok, it happens to us all.”
Cover Story
EMILY TAN Moving from Malaysia to the US at a young age meant that Emily Tan had to adjust to life as an immigrant, with the discrimination and challenges that come with it. Having endured several personal and professional setbacks, she’s recently had to face up to the fight of her life: a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia three months ago.
Q What does resilience mean to you? To me, resilience means being adaptable during difficult times and practicing cognitive flexibility. Acknowledge the facts, observe the emotions and let them pass. Address the factual stressors, evaluate reasonable outcomes, and embrace the best calculated decision. Sticking to logic while not being dogmatic to it, and keeping up morale have been my personal formula for resilience. Q Have you always been resilient, or is it something you've had to learn? I’ve not always been resilient but I have always been stubborn! I was “the cry baby”
among my relatives. Since moving to the States and starting our lives from scratch, I’ve become less sheltered. The things I used to fret about growing up among the uppermiddle classes in Malaysia were no longer relevant to my life as a lower-class minority in America. My stubbornness and pride turned out to be helpful in nurturing those traits. Q Can you talk us through a time in your life when you experienced a real challenge, and how it changed you? I was 15 years old. I had my first kiss, my first relationship, my first driving lessons… and I got pregnant and had an abortion, 21
Cover Story
which haunted me for more than 15 years. I felt overwhelmed with shame and guilt, afraid I might not be able to have children in the future, and betrayed as I wasn’t conscious when I lost my virginity (yes, #metoo). I was isolated as I didn’t have any close friends at the time, and all this, combined with the anger I felt towards myself led to suicidal thoughts and one suicide attempt. Practicing stoicism through my adult years helped in the face of other adversities: a failed business, two divorces, losing a car to an ex who also threw out all my belongings. They were all the result of choices that I made, and taking responsibility for those choices made it easy for me to do the hard work that was necessary to come out the other side. Now I am facing a new challenge: Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Life can change in an instant, and I realise I may not have a lot of time left to complete this process of self-forgiveness, of sharing my story and helping others feel less alone. If anything, this diagnosis has amplified a greater sense of purpose in what I want to do. Q Can you tell us about any “teachable moments” you’ve had? I don’t remember individual moments, but what has been consistent is counting on myself. I had Beyonce’s “Me, Myself and I” playing on repeat when I was 17, after having caught my then-boyfriend cheating on me. Those three words have stuck with me throughout challenging times. Face who you are when you are alone, love who you are and find out how you can help yourself. Me, Myself and I.
Q Can you recommend resources for when times get tough? My recommendations are podcasts like The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes; The Tim Ferriss Show; and The Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu. They all have phenomenal interviews with great thinkers and doers. Then, there are speakers like the therapist Esther Perel and the philosopher Jiddu Krisnamurthi. Both of them have released books, scripts and audiobooks dealing with all aspects of tough times, whether it is career, personal growth, or relationships. If quotes and sayings are all you can manage some days, Marcus Aurelius’s writing is pretty awakening. Q What advice would you give to someone facing a professional or personal challenge? Strip it down. Imagine the worst that could happen, really relish in it, live it for a moment as you picture it, list the logical solutions for it. Then reassess with the question “is it REALLY THAT bad?”. Most of time, our thoughts form the problems, rather than the facts of a situation. Now, is it still that big of a challenge?

RESILIENCE 101 Simple tips and tricks to foster resilience in your day-to-day life, as suggested by Nicholas Anderson of Forge. • Get some exercise! Maintaining good physical health shows strong links to maintaining psychological health and vice versa. • Spend time with other people. A strange product of our connected world seems to be a huge rise in loneliness. Find ways to build better relationships and spend more time with friends and family. • Monitor your self-talk - what we call your “explanatory style” for events. If you notice that you blame any “fixed” elements of yourself, such as your perceived weaknesses or personality traits, when bad things happen, try to challenge yourself to come up with a different explanation. • Get a good night’s sleep. Every night.
the panacea that some might claim, but it does have an emerging evidence base that shows a level of impact. • Give back. Cover Story
LINDSAY JANG In 2011, entrepreneur and yogi Lindsay Jang opened her first restaurant, Yardbird. After various personal and professional ups and downs, the business is going from strength to strength.
Q What does resilience mean to you? Your ability to process negative information or news and digest it whole, emotionally react, and then proactively figure out the next steps. The more resilient you are, the faster you work through these steps. Q Have you always been resilient? For as long as I can remember, I’ve been pretty tough. I’m the oldest of three girls. 24
My dad never showed any sign of weakness no matter what was going on, while my mom wore her heart on her sleeve. I think I’m more like my dad but I definitely inherited some emotional vulnerability (albeit not much!) from my mom. I still get really down or feel broken at times, but I focus intensely on not dwelling or allocating much time to those states of mind.
Cover Story
Q Can you talk us through your experience of opening Yardbird? Matt and I split up six months after we opened Yardbird in 2011. Our second child was 6 months’ old. It was a lot to deal with because we still had to work together, grow this new business, host guests, and everything else that comes with restaurant life, and there was so much anger and resentment lingering. I kept my head down, spent all my energy on the kids and the restaurant and just trusted that it would get better because we had been friends for so long. And we’re best friends today. It took about 18 months to get back to a good place but it was never terrible. We aren’t hurtful people; we just needed time to heal. Yoga saved me during this time. Exercise is my moving meditation, it keeps me sane and lets me release all my pent-up feelings. Sometimes I cry at the end of a great class, and sometimes I slam a medicine ball hard on the ground, dedicating that force to whatever I’m dealing with that hour, day or week. I have to sweat five days a week at least, though I go for seven if my schedule allows. Q What did you learn during this journey? I know that the strength I have is fortified by the people I choose to work with and surround myself with socially. I never feel alone or isolated with an issue; there’s always someone to work with towards a solution. Resilience is so much easier to achieve if you have an army of support around. But you have to earn that love and understanding, and you have to reciprocate.
26
Q When you're having a tough day, what do you say to yourself to get through it? Honestly, I just work and grind through it. If I stopped or slowed down every time I had a hard day, I’d never get anything done! I do love massages; I’ll squeeze one in whenever and as frequently as I can. Q What advice would you give to someone facing a professional or personal challenge? Talk about it. Ask for help. If you are a good person and have a strong work ethic, look at this issue as a bump in the road - a very, very, very long road. Find the bright side.

STRIKE FIRST After signing up for and competing in a White-Collar Boxing tournament in 2016, Lisa “The Typhoon” Twinley was officially bitten by the boxing bug, and now wants to see more women taking up the sport for fun and fitness.
T
hanks in part to the annual White Collar Boxing and Club Fight Night boxing tournaments, boxing has seen a huge surge in interest in recent years. But while it remains (for now) a male-dominated sport, I’m here to tell you that while boxing is tough, it’s also hugely empowering and a ton of fun. While it can be intimidating to step into a male-dominated space and pull on a pair of gloves, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find a supportive, welcoming environment where you can learn a skill, punch out some stress and get fighting fit at the same time. Here are a few gyms offering boxing classes around town.
30
Impakt MMA THE GYM: Impakt MMA is owned and run by Alain “The Panther” Ngalani, four-time World Kickboxing Champion and One FC MMA fighter. THE CLASSES: With morning bootcamp, evening boxing, and a range of classes during the day covering everything from weight training to HIIT and MMA, there are classes to suit all levels and interests. THE BOXING: Start with a private session. The trainers will walk you through techniques and ensure you are learning the science of boxing, all while getting sweaty and having lots of fun. THE TRAINERS: Kev Reed is one of the most motivating
SPORT
Warrior Hong Kong THE GYM: Previously known as Warrior Muay Thai, Warrior Hong Kong’s vision is to raise the standard of boxing in Hong Kong. They have invested heavily into their boxing program, and even have fighters on track for the Olympics. THE CLASSES: I recommend their Fundamentals class. It’s great for beginners or for those who want to sharpen their moves. Also try out the Boxing and Drills class, which focuses on building combinations, all while raising your heart rate. THE BOXING: Fully equipped with multiple punching bags, there is plenty of space to learn some grueling combinations. THE TRAINERS: Jonathan Fung worked me hard. His personal style is movement-based, teaching strong fundamentals with a bit of pizazz. HIGHLIGHTS: If you’re a bit more serious, you can get in the ring under the watchful eye of Coach O. I had the pleasure of going up against a couple of boys and showing them my right hook! TIP: Arrive a little early for a stretch as there wasn’t a lot of focus on this at the beginning of the sessions. COST: Drop-in $250; monthly membership $1,900. 3/F, Block C, Sea View Estate, 8 Watson Rd., North Point, 2512-2262, www.warriorhongkong.com.
The Fighters Club THE GYM: This gym is unique in that they only provide one-onone training. This means that you get tailor-made training based on your individual goals using a systematic breakdown of techniques and fighting strategies to suit both beginners and advanced fighters. THE BOXING: I trained with Bryan, who put me through my paces in the initial warm-up. We focused on improving my speed and he showed me techniques I had not used before. My hour was a total body workout with “breaks” that consisted of push-ups, burpees and sit-ups. THE TRAINERS: Bryan has had a lot of success by using boxing as a fun and interactive way to keep women engaged and coming back for more. HIGHLIGHTS: It’s all about you, all the time! I was given a very considered, personalised short and long term plan from my PT. TIP: Not suitable for those wanting to fade into the background in a group class. COST: one-on-one training is $750 per hour. 3/F, Shiu Fung Building, 51-53 Johnston Rd., Wan Chai, 2602-8922, thefightersclub.com.hk.
trainers I have come across. He will not only get your fighting fit, but mentally focused as well. HIGHLIGHTS: Wednesday bootcamp is the perfect mixture of kettlebell swings followed by a cathartic session on the punching bags. TIP: The changing rooms are spotless and functional, but don’t expect a blow drying station or any other frills. COST: $200 drop-in; membership $1,099 per month (summer special rate). 2/F, Wing’s Building, 110-116 Queen’s Road Central, 2167-7218, www.impakt.hk.
31
The Studio by JAB THE GYM: Offering a wide range of services, at JAB you can get fit, change your lifestyle and learn a combat sport, all under one roof. THE CLASSES: The classes were well structured, starting with a traditional boxing warm-up. The cardio focused sessions were a killer, and then the technique sessions burned those muscles - muscle memory is all about repeat, repeat, repeat. THE BOXING: The schedule is the best in town, offering the chance to box twice a day if you wish. Keeping things varied with fitness, technique and the opportunity to spar, everyone is catered for. THE TRAINERS: Jordan and Ibrahim both have their own unique styles. I recommend training with both to see which style suits you. HIGHLIGHTS: There is a real community feel to this gym. They ensure that you have fun and make new friends whilst getting your sweat on. COST: Drop-in $300; package of 10: $2,750 (this gets cheaper the more you buy) TIP: They don’t have a ring, which is a shame for those wanting to spar and get a feel for a proper fight. 5/F, Crawford House, 70 Queen’s Road Central, 2851-6684, www.studiojab.hk.
Warrior Academy THE GYM: An all-inclusive gym (no longer affiliated with Warrior Hong Kong) offering mixed martial arts (including a first-class wrestling program) and a Lean & Mean program for those focused on body transformations. THE CLASSES: With two schedules running in parallel, you can focus on Strength & Conditioning or MMA classes. The first sessions start at 6.30am for the early birds and continue through to the evening. The strong (wo)man classes are a great addition to supplement your boxing training. THE BOXING: I really enjoyed the style of boxing at Warrior. It wasn’t just about hitting pads; you also focus on the fundamentals. THE TRAINERS: Matt and Bernard highlighted to me why training with different coaches is so beneficial. Their use of analogies to help hone a skill was a real eye opener - even after two years, I’m still learning! HIGHLIGHTS: With a large female membership base, you will not feel intimidated getting stuck in and throwing some punches. TIP: Book in advance as classes may be cancelled if there aren’t enough people booked in. COST: Drop-in: $250. Contact them for more packages. 1/F, Hong Kong Plaza, 188 Connaught Road West, Shek Tong Tsui, 2838-3878, warrioracademyhk.com.

Get OnTheList We speak to Delphine Lefay and Diego Dultzin Lacoste of OnTheList, which hosts exclusive flash sales for international brands in Central, to learn how this middleman platform helps fashion brands save clothes from the landfill… while helping members bag a bargain at the same time. Q When did you set up OnTheList? We set up the company in August 2015, and hosted our first flash sale in January 2016 - it took six months to convince our first partner brand, ba&sh, to work with us. Thanks to a lot of noise from the French community and support from the French Chamber, we had more than 1,000 people attend our first event. We now have 155,000 members on our list and have since gone on to host more than 100 flash sales with 200-plus brands.
1. We focus on our members’ experience, with pleasant layouts, a spacious, uncrowded shopping and a high level of customer service 2. We hold weekly flash sales with international brands. 3. We have different brands online and offline; make sure to check out our website for other lifestyle brands. 4. We offer the best deal in town! 5. We make luxury affordable, and bring you brands that you can’t find anywhere else.
Q What is the mission of your company? Our mission is to minimise the negative environmental impact of the fashion industry by turning last season’s inventory into an opportunity. We help fashion and lifestyle brands deal with their excess stock, and prevent clothes from being needlessly destroyed, via weekly flash sales.
Q What’s next for OnTheList? We are looking beyond fashion to skincare and consumer goods, which we are showcasing in our online store. We are also gearing up to host our first flash sale in Singapore. Closer to home we are bringing our flash sales to different locations, such as Taikoo and Tsim Sha Tsui. We love our permanent location on Duddell Street, but this way we can reach even more shoppers. In the short term, we are excited to be partnering with Ted Baker, Juicy Couture, Reiss and Fjallraven this summer.
Q What are some of the unique aspects of OnTheLIst? We’re quite a unique company in several ways:

TWINKLE IN YOUR EYE I love that BareMinerals (the OGs of the green beauty game with over 35 years in the business) continue to evolve their range with exciting new product launches - and this summer, it’s all about the eyes. Their latest cruelty-free cosmetics collection features six products dedicated to prettifying your peepers, including mascara, eyeshadow palettes, a brow pencil, primer and eyeliner. As ever, all their items are paraben-free (most are phthalate, sulfate, talc and fragrancefree too, but do check their detailed ingredient lists for individual formulas) and infused with mineral-rich ingredients that boast myriad beauty benefits. My top picks are the trio of Gen Nude Eyeshadow Palettes, which each feature six different complexion-complementing neutral eyeshadows in gorgeously silky matte, satin and metallic finishes; and the Eyeshadow+Primer, which comes in four different shades that either neutralise discolouration or brighten dullness, and act as both a smoothing, crease-free canvas that prolongs the lifespan of eye makeup. It can be used alone as an au naturel eyeshadow. The eyes have it! Products range from $170-270. Available at BareMinerals stores and counters citywide, including SOGO Causeway Bay and FACESSS Harbour City; see all locations at www.bareminerals.com.hk.
AESOP’S FABLES I’ve long been a fan of Aesop’s botanical-based skincare, which is all cruelty-, paraben-, and silicone-free, and features zero colourants, mineral oils or ingredients derived from animals. Now you can go one better by getting an Aesop facial at their beautifully tranquil Treatment Space in Harbour City, a haven of soft blush tones and aromatic calm. Following a consultation with one of their trained therapists to determine any specific skin concerns, you can choose between six facials, available in 60- or 75-minute durations, that exclusively use Aesop’s signature skincare products. Meanwhile, the rhythmic strokes and pressure used by your therapist during the treatment have been designed to ensure your skin gets the most out of their products’ active ingredients. Facials cost $920 for 60 minutes or $1,090 for 75 minutes. Room 1415, World Commerce Centre, Harbour City, 7-11 Canton Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2110-5099, www.aesop.com/facialappointments. 36

e live in the era of, “yes, I can.” Achieve more, be the best, push to the top and reach your goals. But sometimes this results in something very different indeed: a severe case of “no. I really, really can’t.” Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just hit pause and take a self-indulgent break without having to worry about what’s happening at work? A five-hour flight from Hong Kong and just a short drive from Bali’s main airport in Nusa Dua (thankfully the new ocean bypass conveniently

avoids the dreaded drive through Denpasar’s notoriously bad traffic) is the brand new holistic wellness resort, Revivo. The property consists of 16 traditional-style Balinese villas set within 1.6 hectares of lush teak tree forest and gardens. Beautiful as it may be, I didn’t go to Revivo for the scenery or tranquil environment; I went to experience the fledgling brand’s prescriptive wellness programmes. Health and wellbeing continues to be a growing theme for travellers - whether it’s unique spa treatments, yoga and

meditation retreats, or taking advantage of the great outdoors, we’re spending more money than ever before on making time for ourselves. According to the 2018 Global Wellness Tourism Economy Report, wellness tourism is expected to grow 9 percent year on year, 50 percent faster than any other travel sector. Today, more resorts are bridging the gap between basic wellness such as yoga and fitness classes, and the other end of the spectrum, full medical tourism. The brainchild of two Hong Kong-based hospitality entrepreneurs, Laurie Mias and Gordon Oldham, Revivo is one resort offering tailored programmes. Mias explains: “With Revivo, we’ve set out to create transformational experiences, focusing on treatments for the mind, body and spirit to achieve 'healing' through training and self-awareness, as opposed to treatment for specific illnesses or injuries. Guests will leave having learned lessons that can be implemented into their daily lives to improve
their long-term wellbeing. All retreats can be customised, and while our programmes last from between three and 14 nights, guests are encouraged to visit for anything from a day to a full month, or more.” Prior to my trip, I received a phone call from Kathy Cook, Revivo’s resident wellness consultant, to talk about my current physical and mental wellbeing as well as my goals for my stay. Revivo has six programmes, and it’s for Kathy to decide which is most suitable based on your consultation. As I was around 12 weeks' pregnant at the time I was to try the mother-to-be plan, but other options included anti-aging and longevity, detox and organic weight loss, and emotional balance and mind training. On arrival at the resort I received another check-in with Kathy, which included a body composition and facial skin-type analysis, which further enabled her to prescribe the best combination of food, exercise and treatments for my stay.

Each morning I was roused at 7am with a trio of shots delivered to my room. First came a salted lemon juice (if you aren’t awake already you will be after one of these), followed by a jamu-laden tonic with powerful healing claims, and finally a fizzy kombucha shot to help put back some good bacteria in my gut. After an hour-long energising yoga session, I sat down to my tailored breakfast menu made from whole and organic ingredients. Food forms the foundation of Revivo’s programmes with menus carefully designed by the resort’s nutritionist to suit the needs of each diner. Made with ingredients and flavours native to Bali, menus are high in protein with a balanced approach to fats and carbs. Fitness is a key component of each retreat, with hybrid workouts that encourage inspiration just as much as perspiration. It’s not all about killing yourself in the gym; “yang” activities such as HIIT and kickboxing sessions are complemented with softer “yin” practices like Iyengar yoga, soundhealing meditation and qigong. Afternoons at Revivo are all about doing as much or as little as you like. I was prescribed a daily organic spa treatment as part of my programme - perfect for soothing and relaxing my mind and body during my pregnancy. One day it was the natural facial (think homemade honey scrubs and yoghurts masks), the next a detoxifying traditional Boreh scrub made from Balinese herbs and spices. But it’s Revivo’s access to experts and wellness consultants that sets it apart from the crowd. On my second day I was introduced to Dr. Bobbi, a Traditional Chinese Medical Practitioner and self-proclaimed hippie who merges the ancient techniques of Chinese medicine with her knowledge of Western Medicine to support the healing of a range of ailments. She also
40
has a strong background working with pregnant women, founding and working at the Bumi Sehat Birthing Clinic helping local Indonesian women stay healthy and strong right from conception through to labour. After an initial consultation over a coconut latte she told me I was progressing well but she’d recommend a simple ‘Happy Baby’ treatment to “Keep me up!”. I wasn’t entirely sure what this meant but she advised on a basic acupuncture session, as well as a chlorophyll supplement like spirulina or chlorella to keep my energy levels constant. Her warmth and positive attitude was infectious and I left her feeling confident and resolute. There is little doubt that we all deserve some ‘me’ time but as we don’t all fit into the same mould, wellness needs to adapt to offering a more personalised service. Yes, it comes at a price but sometimes having it all is all about the luxury of doing absolutely nothing at all. www.revivoresorts.com

FIT FAM
with Kate Farr
Summer is officially here, which sounds great, but in practice means finding things to keep everyone occupied in the heat and humidity. So this month I have a summer camp option for kids who love nothing better than to get their hands dirty, a brand new indoor play space for tots, and a sneaky new plant-based kids’ menu that they’ll never guess is good for them.
FEEDING THE FUTURE
ARK-ING AROUND Bemoaning the lack of outdoor space for active kids in Hong Kong? It’s time to look a little further afield - to Lantau, to be precise - where Ark Eden is laying on a whole summer of adventurous fun in the great outdoors. Aimed at kids from five up to 11, Ark Eden’s summer eco camps take place in the forest just outside of Mui Wo, and include a whole host of themed activities, like jungle chef camp, zero waste heroes, treehouse playground, a day on the farm, and, surely the most useful of all, zombie apocalypse survival camp. My eldest son has attended Ark Eden’s camp days for the last three summers, and always comes home filthy, wet, tired… and completely thrilled with all his new skills, experiences and friends. Camp days from $670-750 per day, with package discounts available. For more information visit arkedenonlantau.org. 46
So Grassroots Pantry has been around for a while now, but their brand new “Little Sprouts” kids’ menu brings their trademark plant-based dining to a whole new, (and, let’s be frank, far pickier) clientele. I took along my two to sample the selection, and discovered that my kids are actually far more open to healthy fare than I’d guessed. Of course, when you have clever signatures such as popcorn “chicken” (actually mushrooms with coconut amino BBQ sauce), mac and cheese made with pine nut ricotta, and sweet potato fries, there’s little for them to quibble about, and even less so when it comes to dessert. They happily devoured profiteroles filled with vegan Happy Cow ice cream, and then licked the plate clean after a warm and gooey teff chocolate brownie. Meanwhile, I sampled a “Cucumberella” mocktail, made with Seedlip nonalcoholic spirit, coconut nectar, cucumber and ginger for a refreshingly light alternative to G&T. Healthy food without a hint of dissent? Hats off to Grassroots for finding a formula for the whole family. Kids’ dishes cost from $45-80. 108 Hollywood Rd., Sheung Wan, 2873-3353, grassrootspantry.com.

BUNNING THINGS If staying outdoors sounds a little too sweaty, there’s an airconditioned alternative for little ones, right in the heart of MidLevels. Bun & Fun is a brand new indoor playground, featuring ride-on toys, a trampoline, books, climbing area and slide. Although advertised as suitable for children up to eight, I’d say that this is probably best for kids aged six and under, who need a little less space to tear around then their elder siblings. Solomon Luk This summer, Solomon Luk will be representing Hong Kong in Paris at the Gay Games, an inclusive sporting event and festival in support of the LGBT community and its allies.

The Paris Gay Games are taking place on August 4-12. Find out more at www.paris2018.com. And if you didn’t already know, The Gay Games will be coming to Hong Kong in 2022! Find out more at gaygameshk2022.com.
What I’m competing in: I love running, so I will be competing in the half marathon, the 10k and the 5k run. My training routine: I don’t have a definite routine. However I love running outdoors either near parks, in parks or on the mountains trails. What I hope to achieve at the Gay Games: I am not thinking of the results or about winning this time. I am really looking forward to having fun with an amazing global community. There will be sportspeople from around the world. It is going to be incredible! One thing I'm going to do in Paris for fun: I have a soulmate and unfortunately we haven’t seen each other for two years, so I really want to spend time with him. The Gay Games are much more than sports. It is a complete festival and it will be really special for us to enjoy it together. I was at my least healthy: When I was a school teacher and studying at the same time. I had very little time for exercise. It was not a great time but it wasn’t for too long. Last plane trip I took: I went to Northern China to work at a forest marathon race,

offering a results processing service. One thing I wish Hongkongers knew about the LGBT community: That it is very diverse, just like Hong Kong society as a whole. One thing Hongkoners could do to support the LGBT community: To come out as an ally. That means that telling an LGBT friend, family member or colleague that you support them. Come to events like Pink Dot, and of course come to the Gay Games Hong Kong in 2022. Number-one item on my bucket list: I really wish to be a good drummer/percussionist. What I listen to when working out: I like to feel my heartbeat, so no music for me. I just run and train. One thing I always have in my fridge: Oops. I know I am supposed to mention something healthy, but to be very honest, you will always find coke and soda in my fridge! I always have in my gym bag: A whole set of clean clothes, a towel and shower gel. I was born here but really cannot stand the hot and humid Hong Kong summer weather. I must hunt for a shower after every workout.
