DOG DAYS
A
nd we’re back! We took a short break last month to focus our attention on some other exciting Liv projects (which I’ll get into shortly), and even though it was a restful and much-needed break, I’m so happy to be back with this issue! One big reason why I’m so thrilled to be back at my desk this month could have something to do with March’s cover story. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a complete sucker for dogs (I’m super allergic to cats, don’t @ me). My love and affection know no bounds when it comes to woman’s best friend - and I have fostered the earthly reincarnation of Cerberus in my home, so trust me, I have been tested thoroughly in this regard. Fixated as I am on good boys and girls, I happened to notice that there has been an uptick in alternative pet care products and treatments in the last couple of years. From treats made with Chinese medicinal herbs to various kinds of alternative therapies for ailments, looking after your fur baby isn’t limited to just a trip to the vet anymore! We explore some of the different alternative and complementary wellness for pets right now on p.16. About those exciting new projects I mentioned... here at Liv, we got to talking one day, and came to the conclusion that we could all use something fun to pull us through the winter doldrums. So we put our heads together and came up with... the Liv Well Challenge! This is a seven-day online challenge, promoting wellness, healthy habits, and community. Their Italian restaurant, Lucciola, is a masterclass in Italian cuisine done right. We sampled two dishes, the simple yet delicious Spaghetti Acciughe E Tomino Fresco, tossed in a sauce of Sicilian anchovies, garlic, parsley and fresh tomino cheese; and the phenomenal Paglia E Fieno Al Ragu Di Rane e Dragoncello, a tagliatelle dish made with herbs, onion, string beans, prosecco, white balsamic and (wait for it) frogs’ legs from Piedmont. Urban Air Mask 2.0 from Airinum The Buzz: Masks are a dime a dozen these dozen, but that doesn’t mean that they’re all created equal. We heard about this new mask, which has a few key upgrades that had us intrigued. We picked one up to give it a test drive on Hong Kong’s mean streets. The Mask: Designed by a Swedish health tech startup, the mask is reusable and uses a filter similar to a N95 respirator. This makes it a more heavy duty option that’s meant to protect against different particles and hazardous airborne substances. Our mask kit arrives with a few different parts that require some assembly - mask “skin” (exterior), replaceable air filter, air valves, air stoppers, a head strap and a travel pouch - but after a few tries, we finally put it together. Features like adjustable ear loops make it an easy mask to tailor to our face, and it sits nicely over our mouth area without rubbing. The Verdict: A year ago it would have been hard to imagine getting excited about a face mask, but here we are! We loved the adjustable ear loops, which keep the mask snug against our mugs without any uncomfortable ear chafe. Also, because of the filter used, this mask has a bit more structure to it (not unlike a duck bill) and sits quite far off the face. This is a blessing for lipstick lovers, and to our delight, we were able to rock a bold lip under this bad boy for an entire day without a single smudge on our face or inside the mask - what luxury! Takes a bit of getting used to, but definitely a more protective and practical option for a mask you need to wear day in and day out. Two thumbs up! The Dyson Digital Slim Vacuum Cleaner The Buzz: You know you’re getting to a certain age when the most exciting thing to review isn’t a hot new restaurant or a hardcore fitness programme, but a new vacuum cleaner. The Dyson Digital Slim has been designed specifically for smaller Hong Kong flats and is 20 percent smaller and 30 percent lighter than their regular models. Engineers reportedly studied cleaning habits in Hong Kong and created a machine that works well on hard floors, can reach hard-to-clean areas, and is durable enough for daily use. The Product: We unpacked the machine and were impressed by how light it was at just 1.9 kilograms. We set to work on our hardwood floors and were amazed by the quantity of dust, crumbs and stray hair this little guy was able to suck up. Now on a cleaning frenzy, we tackled mattresses and sofas, and were simultaneously grossed out and thrilled by the amount of dust that was lifted off these surfaces too. Our flat felt cleaner and fresher, and we were pleased that once our cleaning blitz was over, the Dyson Digital Slim went back in its charger. No fussing with bulky extension cords or nozzles required. The Verdict: We’ve long been fans of Dyson, and this nifty gadget is no exception. It has the same suction power as conventional models, minus the bulk. If you’ve always wanted to invest in a Dyson, take the plunge with this small but mighty model. Your flat will thank you. Fur The Love Of Health
Alternative wellness for pets is more paw-pular than ever before! We look into four different trends that pet owners are embracing in Hong Kong right now. By Carla Thomas. 16

A
lternative wellness has been on the rise for years. Everything from acupuncture to naturopathy, hypnosis, herbal medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, even energy healing disciplines like reiki and shamanism - these complementary and alternative therapies (also known as CAM) have become so popular they’re virtually mainstream. In the US, for example, an estimated 38 percent of adults and 12 percent of children use some form of CAM, according to John Hopkins Medicine. That number is as high as 90 percent in other developed countries, including Italy, Germany, France and Canada, according to another study. Inevitably, what is popular with humans becomes popular with their pets, which explains why pet owners are increasingly turning to CAM to treat their animal’s medical problems. Here are some of the different health and wellness trends available for four-legged family members, and what a local vet, Lawren Durocher-Babek, an internal medicine specialist at Veterinary Specialist Hospital, has to say about them.
HYDROTHERAPY & ACUPUNCTURE After she was diagnosed with a herniated disc, Stella Tse’s dog Lucy had spinal surgery and was left without the use of her back legs. On the advice of her veterinarian, Tse brought her dog to HEAL Animal Wellness and Rehabilitation to help restore some of Lucy’s mobility. HEAL is an integrative care centre for domestic animals in Sai Ying Pun, offering services like hydrotherapy, massage and acupuncture. Although Tse, who is from Hong Kong, was already familiar with traditional forms of medicine, she wasn’t entirely convinced about their use on animals. “I was aware of acupuncture treatment for dogs before, but I was skeptical about it,” admits Tse. Despite her reservations, she started bringing Lucy for hydrotherapy and acupuncture sessions. After two to three months of a weekly hydrotherapy regimen, as well as fortnightly acupuncture, Lucy was able to walk on all fours again. According to Wendy Tan, a certified canine hydrotherapist and the owner of HEAL, for dogs like Lucy there is a “golden window” of around six months after a spinal injury where rehabilitation programmes can be effective. “In Lucy’s case, we have been able to get her back on her feet, and while there is permanent residual neurological deficit because of her injury, today she’s not only able to walk, but can also run up the stair-ramp to get into the pool,” says Tan. Because Lucy was also receiving care from a team of other veterinary specialists, Tan says she’s a great example of how alternative therapies are an effective part of a multidisciplinary team to provide more holistic care with better outcomes.
What does the vet say? Physiotherapy, including acupuncture and hydrotherapy, can make a huge difference in recovery from injuries and surgery in our patients. I have personally seen these modalities speed up the healing process and relieve the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis in some patients. This is becoming more mainstream in modern veterinary care. A comprehensive treatment plan may combine Eastern medicine with more conventional medicine, and it is important to work as a team with your veterinarian to understand how different modalities can work together.

HERBAL MEDICINE MEDICINE Chinese herbal therapies have been in use for thousands of years, but it’s probably fair to say that it’s only in recent times Vivian Tang that it’s been applied to animals. But with a growing market for pet healthcare, more brands are starting to embrace the use of ancient medicinal practices on four-legged clientele. Wai Yuen Tong, a 123-year-old Hong Kong brand specialising in traditional Chinese medicine healthcare products, developed their own product line of TCM-inspired herbal supplements for pets two years ago. The formulations use all-natural ingredients like cordyceps, shiitake extract and longan fruits, to promote health in different bodily systems like respiratory, bones & joints, or immunity function, as well as more general supplements to boost vitality. “We were seeing a need for homegrown, eco-friendly and socially-conscious pet products,” says Vivian Tang, executive director of Wai Yuen Tong. As the third generation of her family to head the TCM company, Tang says that Eastern remedies offer the same advantages to pets as they do to their owners. “We believe that Chinese herbs are suitable for animals because Western medicines may cause unwanted side effects,” says Tang. She adds that in Chinese philosophy, Western medicine is believed to treat only symptoms - not the source of a problem. “Chinese medicine focuses on the inner balance of something to improve health first, by diagnosing through symptoms, then addressing the underlying root causes of those problems. We believe that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’”

What does the vet say? A large portion of modern medicines are rooted in naturally occurring compounds, and I think in time we will find more and more Chinese herbs that can replace some of our mainstream medications. Herbal medicines such as Yunnan Baio and Denamarin are already being incorporated into modern veterinary treatments. Herbs must be high quality to be safely prescribed and should come from a reputable supplier. It is very important to discuss any Chinese medications you are using with your veterinarian so that we can make sure that they don’t interfere with other medications.

CBD Another plant-based alternative treatment catching on with pet owners is CBD. Otherwise known as cannabidiol, CBD is the second most active ingredient in marijuana. Once the ingredient is extracted from the cannabis plant, however, it loses the strong psychoactive effects of the street drug and instead offers a host of useful benefits for users. Reports suggest it may help with treating anxiety, pain, insomnia and epilepsy, and as a result, it has found its way into a range of different CBD product lines. Hong Kong brand Gentle Bro does two different CBD pet products - an oil tincture and dog treats - which they sell at their Pottinger Street shop, as well as online. Found, the city’s first CBD-focused cafe and concept store, sells an organic, chicken-flavoured CBD oil for pets which promotes joint health and anxiety relief. The trend is so popular that even legacy brands like Wai Yuen Tong are getting in on the action; the company is planning on launching its own herbal-infused CBD pet product line in the spring, alongside its TCM offerings. “More of our customers are looking for CBD products, and we anticipate natural pet therapy will continue to be a big trend in the future,” says Tang, the group’s executive director.
What does the vet say? We don’t have enough studies to prove that CBD oil is beneficial for cats and dogs, but many people believe it is. Dogs and cats metabolise cannabinoid oil differently than people and they need higher doses to see a response. Studies are currently underway to see if CBD oil is beneficial in pets with seizures, as well as with pain management. Marijuana and its derivatives can be toxic to pets, so discuss this with your veterinarian.

Bioresonance Bioresonance is a non-invasive healing therapy, which seeks to promote the body’s self-healing response through electromagnetic frequency patterns. Proponents of this alternative therapy believe that illness and dysfunction occur at a cellular level, when cells are not able to communicate with one another properly due to toxins, viruses, bacteria, allergens, or radiation. Using electrodes that allow the body’s cells to vibrate at their “natural frequency,” bioresonance purportedly treats the condition. Waveworks is a bioresonance therapy clinic offering services for animals. The centre’s owner and lead bioresonance therapist, Monica Wai, initially trained as an animal bioresonance therapist before expanding her practice to humans. She believes the therapy has a lot to offer patients who are unable to communicate their symptoms. “For many pet owners, the worst part is being uncertain about what the animal is suffering from, and where they are experiencing pain,” says Wai. “As an animal therapist, I can help bridge that gap by applying bioresonance technology to pinpoint not only the illness, but also what is causing the illness.” She treats animal health issues ranging from ailments in digestive systems, skin disorders, pain management, and mobility issues, as well as allergen testing. The goal is to help pets in a non-invasive and effective manner, without having to resort to potentially harmful medications and painful tests.
What does the vet say? Not enough is known yet about bioresonance, so I would urge caution using this method of diagnostics in place of other testing methodologies. If your pet is sick, it is important to have them evaluated by a qualified veterinarian at the first signs of significant symptoms. Many diseases can be treated effectively only if diagnosed early.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE The recent spate of dog poisonings at Cyberport Park shocked Hong Kong’s community of pet-lovers. We speak to VSH’s Dr Erik Zager, Emergency Critical Care Specialist; and Dr Joanna Mockford, an emergency veterinarian, on how to protect our pets from poisonings, and what to do if you suspect your pet may have ingested poisoned bait.
VSH’S EMERGENCY CARE LINE: 2408-2588 In addition to having your primary care veterinarian, it’s useful to have the number of a nearby 24-hour emergency vet. That way, if your pet is in need of emergency care, you can save precious time researching clinics and get help faster. You can also call ahead and give the team time to prepare for your arrival. VSH has emergency clinics on both sides of the harbour. Or, ask your primary care vet for a recommendation. In addition to emergency services, the VSH team of board-certified specialists are recognised as experts by the Hong Kong Veterinary Surgeons Board in a broad range of disciplines, including
Q What symptoms do poisoned dogs exhibit? Joanna Mockford: Different poisons present different symptoms, but in the case of Cyberport Park, the animals presented with heavy panting, high temperatures and lots of drooling. Some dogs vomited, but some didn’t. Q What should I do if I think my dog has eaten something suspicious, or if they’re showing symptoms of poisoning? Erik Zager: First of all, don’t panic. Call your primary care veterinarian, or contact a 24-hour emergency clinic. Luckily, we live in Hong Kong, and a 24-hour vet is never too far away. The emergency veternarian will induce vomiting in a safe and controlled manner, or they will dose your pet with activated charcoal, which is a very safe way to absorb toxins that have been ingested. They will also perform tests and provide treatments depending on the suspected type of poison. It’s better to be cautious so bring your pet in, even if you’re not sure. Don’t wait to see if they improve, as quick treatment is key.
Q Should I try and make them vomit at home? JM: We recommend that you don’t do that unless you’re under direct advice from a vet. Lots of things can go wrong if you try to induce vomiting at home.

It’s not normal to see meat lying around, so treat any that you find with suspicion.

Some owners are opting for what we call a “Baskerville” muzzle, which fixes a basket around the dog’s nose and mouth. Naagin Tofu Scramble By Naagin Tofu scramble is a vegan and oh-so-easy swap to make for regular scrambled eggs. You can also experiment with different veggies combos like spinach, mushrooms, and green onions to make this a super-healthy meal that offers extra vitamins and minerals. This scramble uses Naagin Hot Sauce, but you can substitute with any hot sauce you have on hand.

INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS:
• ½ onion, diced
1. Prepare the tofu by draining it, wrapping it in a clean cloth or napkin, and placing a plate or heavy object on top to press the water out (around 30 minutes). 2. Once pressed, cut into one-inch cubes before crumbling with your hands or a fork to get the right consistency. 3. Heat oil on high in a large skillet or frying pan, and add onion, green pepper, and crumbled tofu. Saute for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently. 4. Add garlic powder, onion powder and soy sauce. 5. Reduce heat to medium and allow to cook 5 to 7 more minutes, until any residual moisture from the tofu evaporates. 6. Add nutritional yeast and hot sauce, and stir well. Enjoy!

WILD AT HEART Like a lot of parents with young children, I’ve really missed playgrounds and indoor play parks during the pandemic. So when I heard that The Big Things playroom in The Mills was opening up to small groups, I couldn’t wait to give it a go with my two small girls. From climbing frames to obstacles and slides, the space is designed to capture the imagination of kids between the ages of 6 months to 8 years. There are also several interactive augmented reality activities; my 2.5-year old, Orla, enjoyed designing her own tiger character on a digital table before projecting him on the wall to watch him interact with other characters. It’s also great for tinier tots; my youngest, Gilly is just about a year old, and was still content crawling around and exploring in relative freedom. Sessions last an hour but you can pay for an additional 30 minutes if you’re really enjoying yourself.
