When coronavirus kicked off in early 2020, I (like most people) did not anticipate how much it would affect my life. It wasn’t just the loss of leisure activities, social gatherings, and other small inconveniences, like masks and having my temperature checked 84 times a day. There was a professional cost for me as well, and it became harder to work with the same frequency and as consistently as I had before. My style of working also had to change, given to long periods of time spent at home waiting for COVID-19 cases to come down.
We’ve all had to contend with challenges during this year, and my situation isn’t unique or even that bad. But it did force me to examine how I was spending my time, or more accurately, how I was spending all my newfound free time.
If you’ve been struggling with the same abundance of spare time, then this month’s cover story has loads for you to pore over. We talk about how to optimize your downtime, turning the unexpected gift of free time into something that not only fills the hours, but gives you some benefit at the end of the day. Find out more about it on p.20.
Someone who knows all about free time is our very own Jo Robinson. Liv Media’s Director of Partnerships had to travel home to the UK recently, and at the time of writing was in the middle of her two-week quarantine stint. From making your airport landing as smooth as possible to maintaining your sanity in self-isolation, she has all the best tips and tricks for surviving quarantine. Read more on p.26.
If you’ve been jonesing for a vegan-friendly protein bar, we found some seriously tasty and cruelty-free options on p.14 that are all made right here in the 852. And if you’re after something a bit less healthy, we discovered a cookie-mooncake hybrid (p.16) that we’re over the moon for - just in time for Mid-Autumn Festival.
From cooking more to leveling up on Coursera, I’ve done my best in the past several months to use my time wisely and see the unexpectedly heavy burden of nothing to do as a good thing. Both a blessing and a curse, when life goes on hold there’s really nothing anyone can do about it - so you might as well just learn how to macrame and get on with it.
