1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS


The three relationships relate to that of above ground, on ground as well as underground. In Studio Earth, we have explored these relationships through the following three projects Point/Line/Plane Mass Frame & Infill

1.2 MASS

Futuristic mountain lodge

The upper level allows sunshine to flow in onto the lower levels, producing shadows

Partial undergound. As it is a mass structure, it stands on the edge of an ice glacier stably.


Mass While exploring the idea of mass, I created underground shadows which are formed by complex structures above.

Frame and Infill This theme is closely related to the previous concept of mass as the project is very heavy (due to usage of rocks). For frame and infill, it could be a way to define the upper ground spaces. The climbable roof is also inspired from the precedent.

Translating vegetaion, topology and sunshine parts on Herring Island which are related to my final project.


3.2 CONCEPT


Concept: Unexpected These sketches show my processes of producing ideas. By using these ideas, I came up with the idea for my second conceptacle model.

The changes from first conceptacle model to the second one are actually from a shallow to deeper attachment to my concept of “Unexpected�.

4.0 REFLECTION


With the conclusion of this brief but meaningful project, I have learnt many new things that would certainly help me improve in the future. One of the biggest issues that I was faced with this semester is that I tend to produce overly-complicated and possibly somewhat unrealistic designs. Nevertheless, as I find it pretty hard to give up on that altogeher, so I found that simplicity is a skill that I need to brush up on in order to integrate both simple and complex designs in order to tackle more of these kind of problems in the future. For instance, my designs might seem to be leaning more towards the fantasical side while in fact, in order to actually build my designs in the future, it needs to be actually feasible to create. Also, during verbal presentations, I found that I normally try to present as much as I can, with all the information currently on hand. However, I now realise that this is not a good approach towards effective communication. I should instead aim at about 3~5 minutes for a presentation. From tutor’s Week 12 feedback on my presentation, I have also managed to pick up on some of my bad practices. For example, this included having a rather poorly organised visual presentation, having unnecessary backrgound images that may distract the view of readers.
