A Community Thriving With Gardens As a team we want to develop a housing development that addresses the issues most prevalent in Detroit. We want this affordable housing to be accessible to everyone and thus equitable in its development and implementation. Development in Detroit must confront the complicated past of housing in the city that created inequities racially and economically. We are exploring alternate forms of living outside of the single family home or large apartment complexes. In line with our thesis for this project, having accessible green is #60 in the Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander which we studied extensively at the beginning of this semester.

02 ILLUSION Theater of binary visibility Academic project

Instructor: Christian Unverzagt Academic: 2019 Fall Individual Work Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

A Theatrical Moment between Day and Night The original site was one of the few remaining parks on the University campus; so the proposal is to change the site and move it onto an adjacent area, which had been occupied by coal bunkers for the power plan. In that way, it was possible to save the lawn and its trees. The building is used to form a wall on one side of the park, with the reflecting glass, creating an illusion of a larger park during the day. At night, when the lights go on in the lobby and the glass becomes transparent, the theater really comes to life and has an appropriate presence.

Physics lab renovation

Academic project Instructor: Wu Rui, Wang Maozhen, Li Shaochong Academic: 2017 Fall Individual work Location: Xi’an, Shaanxi, China

Dwell in the Glade: There was a small forest in the past, carrying the teachers and students’ countless happy memories. The sound of wind in the pines, like waves, birdsong, and insects, inspires enlightenment. Summer tree shadows, autumn fallen leaves, spring flowers, and winter snow are manifestations of truth. But most of the forest has been cut down because of the construction of a new physics lab. The purpose of my design is to restore memories while meeting the needs of building renovation and exploring the possibility of a new structural form.

Prefabricated research complex design in rural area

Academic project Instructor: Yiqiong Wang, Zhimin Li, Bojing Tian Academic: 2019 Spring Individual work Location: Zhouzhi, Shaanxi, China

Arcadian Life:

Nowadays, more and more people are leaving the countryside where they have lived for a long time to seek jobs in the big cities. Technological innovation has widened the gap between rural and urban areas. By utilizing the prefabricated technology for low-cost, low-tech architectural design in rural environments, scientific and technological talents would go to rural areas for the practice of agricultural research which would revitalize the rural economy and offer locals job opportunities.

Architectural renewal design in historical block

Academic project Instructor: Xiang Yang, Wang Lu, Xiao Li Academic: 2018 Spring Collaberator: Hong Jinlong Teamwork: 50%Survey, 100%Concept, 100%Proposal, 100%Drawing. Location: Beilin, Xi’an, Shaanxi, China

A Forgotten Future: As the center of education for more than 1000 years, the Beilin (the Forest of Steles) block was full of traditional arts such as calligraphy and sculpture. Since 1980, due to the increase in population density, it has gradually transformed into a high-density urban village, and traditional cultural activities and atmosphere have disappeared. My design aims to restore the cultural atmosphere of the historic district, balance the problems of tourists and locals, and solve the pressing issue of children reading in the site.

Cars come and go. It's dangerous! No place to play. It's such a small place. I want a bigger one.

Conclusion: The increasing density of buildings and the deficiency of industrial functions cannot meet children's activities, reading and other needs. Lack of reading places Lack of local cutural experience Lack of activity places Lack of self-study places

I wish I had a brighter place to read.

— CHAPTER I

MY HOME IN BEILIN —

Traditional Modern No Yard Yard Yard

There is a big tree in the yard. My friends and I like to play there. My home in sanxue street , is the nearest quiet alley.

There are two gates here, and I've heard daddy say it's been hundreds of years.

My father had been doing business here for a long time, running a small shop.

Although very crowded, the maze of lanes is the place where we play.

Children here like to play hide and seek in the yard. During the day, I took classes in the primar y school at Shuyuanmen, not far from where I lived.

The room was so dark that I had to sit outside and read books.

It is so interesting to hide and seek in monuments. And stone rubbings can help us learn ancient literature!

It's interesting to chat with many acquaintances in such a big square.

Conclusion: From a place where you can freely experience learning and communication to a more closed museum. The absence of unique educational activity in the Forest of Steles. Disappearance of spontaneous local activities. Disappearance of people's communication activities and unique experiences

Running through piles is just so fun!

— CHAPTER II

THE FOREST OF STELES IN MEMORY —

Mrs. Zhang, a native of Beilin, spent most of her life here. It seems that people who live here have a sense of pride for the forest of steles.

Some were very high, very large in the eyes of children.

The steles, neatly arranged and piled up, was a good place for hide-and-seek.

In the past, there was nothing for children to play with, so at that time, children would go to play in the stone forest.

THE RISE AND FALL OF EDUCATION —

— CHAPTER IV

THE JUNCTURE OF PAST AND PRESENT —

Difficient Functions

Phase 1 Due to the development of tourism, the opportunity of intimate contact with the steles has disappeared. Therefore, the strategy is to add an exhibition gallery for the steles outside the museum.

Phase 2

In the neighborhood, children's difficulty in reading is very serious, so the strategy is to reconstruct the existing historical relics. On the one hand to awaken the historical memory of the street, and on the other hand to satisfy the desire of local residents to read and learn.

Objective: Form an education system with existing functions.

THE FUTURE WE BELIEVE —

There are souvenir shops everywhere. It's boring.

I can hardly find any local experience here! AN ABANDONED MARKET EXHIBITION GALLERY

BEFORE

The traditional calligraphy study space and the experience of walking through the forest of steles have been replaced by cookiecutter souvenir shops. Not only have local people's lives been changed, but the experience of 1 tourists has also been much worse. At the intersection of the street with the highest population density, I built a special exhibition gallery to reactivate the abandoned market to let people touch the most vivid memories. Stone rubbings are SUPER AWESOME!

N

SECTION 1-1

Wow!I can experience the pleasure of walking through the forest of steles!

SECTION 2-2

AFTER

It's great to learn calligraphy near the historic site. I can see the pavilion on the city wall from the ancient tower!

WOW! It is an ancient gate!

AFTER A FORGOTTEN GATE CALLIGRAPHY CLASSROOM & READING

The centuries-old ancient gate is clad in concrete. No one will ever remember what the gate was and why the gate was on the road. I removed the concrete, exposed its own wooden structure, and created a calligraphy study room that extends into the inner courtyard and meets the reading needs of the residents.

AFTER TOWER OF OBLIVION PAINTING CLASSROOM & READING

The ancient tower is completely surrounded by houses. Even if people follow the navigation, they can't find its location at all. I created a new path in the abandoned building, and used a unique entrance to suggest the existence of the ancient tower. Besides, I set up a roofdeck where people could see the pavilion on the city wall just like past.

The scenery of the four seasons is different here! This place is so fun! I'll call my buddies here to play!

I love to read books here again. AFTER A VANISHED SQUARE LIBRARY & ACTIVITIES

There was a small square where neighbors could enjoy sunshine and chat. The building here was abandoned because it had no practical benefit. I demolished the abandoned building, designed a new small library with a small square and provided a spot to see the city wall through tree shadows.

AFTER A DERELICT PLANT PLAYGROUND & READING

Due to the construction of the coal plant, the path here is blocked. After the coal plant is abandoned, the place becomes more and more chaotic. I opened the path and used the remaining steel structure of the plant to set up new facilities and make this place as a playground for all people to play and do activities.
