THRYMR METEROLOGY COMPLEX

Matster third year design thesis

Year: May 2023

international project-Iceland

Individrual work

Brief:

Given the fragile nature of the landscape and the significant role of sustainable energy and tourism economics, the proposed complex places utmost importance on mitigating carbon emissions and minimizing its ecological impact. In pursuit of this objective, the complex will rely primarily on geothermal energy as a self-sufficient power source. Furthermore, the selection of construction materials will prioritize locally sourced options, thereby facilitating a seamless integration of the building within its natural surroundings.

Here two tectonic plates are moving away from each other. This resulted in a landscape characterized by volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and basalt formations.

SITE CONTEXT

Air quality;

In general, iceland has fresh, clean air quality with little pollution. However, near a volcano, the air will filled with the smell of sulfur, which can be quite strong and pungent.

Earthquake ;

Iceland has a well-developed earthquake monitoring system, with the icelandic meteorological office providing regular updates and alerts about earthquake activity in the country.

Weather condition;

The wind is consistently blowing outwards from the geothermal zone. The wind on site can be strong and gusty, particularly along the canyon. During the winter months, iceland can experience frequent strong winds and snowstorms.

Brief:

The objective of the architectural endeavor is twofold: to safeguard the historical Huddersfield townscape while concurrently establishing a nurturing environment for the cultivation and advancement of local culture—a space that serves as an exhibition of identity and a repository of noteworthy regional facts. Furthermore, given the projected increase in the aging population within the forthcoming 15 years, due consideration is being given to the health and well-being of both individuals and healthcare personnel, with the ultimate goal of forging a resilient community.

STORY

In a quaint town near Huddersfield during the 16th century, a profound love story unfolded between a young man and a young lady. Regrettably, their burgeoning romance encountered a formidable obstacle in the disapproving gaze of the young lady's father. Constrained by societal constraints and forbidden from further interaction, the impassioned couple resolved to embark on a courageous journey, fueled by their unwavering devotion.

Fortuitously, fate intervened when the young man chanced upon the horn of a snail—a renowned symbol associated with the facilitation of love's path. Emboldened by this fortuitous discovery, they meticulously devised a plan to escape the clutches of their predicament. A providential ally in the form of a benevolent fairy, manifested as a loyal dog named Helix, emerged to aid them in their audacious endeavor.

Guided and safeguarded by their newfound ally, the young couple embarked on a daring elopement, forsaking their respective homes. As they traversed together, their spirits intertwined, resonating in perfect harmony. Eventually, their path led them to a remarkable spectacle atop the hills of Todmorden—an aweinspiring display of two tear-shaped stones known as the Bride and Groom. Fashioned from weathered sandstone, these imposing structures served as enduring emblems of everlasting love.

With the hallowed stones bearing witness, the enamored couple solemnly exchanged heartfelt vows, cementing an indissoluble union and pledging themselves to a lifetime of unity and unwavering dedication. Their extraordinary love saga would forever intertwine with the rich tapestry of Todmorden's lore, serving as an immortal testament to the resolute potency of love, unyielding determination, and the enchantment that oftentimes manifests in the unlikeliest of realms.
