CULTURAL RECOVERY BEDOUIN HERITAGE CENTRE , DUBAI UDERGRADUATE THESIS DECEMBER 2015 INSTRUCTOR PROF. RITU AGARWAL PROF. DEBAJYOYI BISWAS

The Bedouin Heritage Centre, located in close proximity to the Dubai Creek is a conjunction of multiple and varied programmes centred around Emirati culture and history. This undergraduate thesis proposal, seeks to revive the history of nomadic settlements and create a communal space in the midst of an increasingly globalized city.

" The heritage centre is a stage for the artist, a sanctum for the

religious, a school for the student, an emporium for the trader. It becomes an opportunity to recapture heritage and foster a new relationship between the past and the present.

BREAKING THE GRID Identifying the Qibla's direction and view axes. Direction all axes towards the religious centre on the site. Nestled between the creek and Bur-Dubai, the site marks the historical value of the Creek where the Bani Yas nomadic tribe settled. The creek eventually became the heart of trade and let to the growth of Dubai as a town. The dense urban character of the old city is an adaptation of the built form and a response to the extreme climatic conditions.

NOVEMBER 2014 PROF. SMIRITI MISHRA

CREATING THE NEW FABRIC OF SOCIETY Located in Navi Mumbai, the Multi-Faith Spiritual Centre creates an experiential common space for religious, cultural and spiritual interaction which will help people know each other better, infuse religious tolerance and create the sense of “One World”. This studio project aims to use steel as a medium of architectural expression, to create a visual landmark and a place of worship.

With utopian architectural features this structure seeks to create a sense of awe for the mass and invite them to come at this spiritual complex to experience all five major religions. The access is from the below through a tunnel which opens to the sanctum which reminds of the connection of all religions to earth and water.

The meditation and dining hall wings are located adjacent to the sanctum conceptualized as free form structure in steel tensegrity members and glass cast envelope, this emulates the cave like enclosures prevalent in Ancient Indian religious architecture. The sanctum takes its form from the long evolved monumental scale of places of worship and tries to morph the Islamic arch, Christian spire and Hindu shikhara in an abundance of water around from Sikh spirituality and caves of Buddhism.

THEATRE OF THE STRANGE LOOP THEATRE OF ALTERNATE PERFORMANCES , ANN ARBOR INSTITITUTIONS STUDIO INSTRUCTOR

DECEMBER 2019 PROF. ROBERT ADAMS

A gridiron framework of parallel lines is since history, a method of apportion of land and establishing control over colonized territories, like in Roman civilizations. The grid as a totalitarian structure which creates an ordered system, consciously planned to symbolize control over a landscape and perhaps also its inhabitants. The grid pattern underlying most American cities reflects a single act of order and not a complex evolution. The project references the Jefferson Grid which currently predominates the American landscape, which evolved as a method of land survey and distribution. The Theatre of strange loops questions how architecture can challenge the existing social order, and anatomical hierarchy. The project stages four institutional instruments around the site through their non-identical twin, the physicality of the form and function are exploited to create different theatrical spaces and their structure of control over the body exposed, into a performative architecture.

HOSPITAL

OBSERVATORY

CEMETARY

The project becomes a “legible sequence of various performances” and is presented as a staging of curated systems of order. The theatre of strange loops, much like Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, is a seemingly complete act which has been chopped into vignettes and rearranged like a puzzle.

URBAN INTERVENTION TRANSFORMATION OF THE INDIAN GHAT, MARKET DESIGN, KOLKATA NASA COMPETITION WORK INSTRUCTOR

JANUARY 2015 PROF. SATYAKI SARKAR

This urban redesign project located below the Howrah Bridge on the banks of Hoogly River, Kolkata, seeks to cretae order in thriving multi nodal activity space. Understanding the historical and geographical importance of the site, the design primarily aims at conserving and re-visioning the onriginal grandeur of the ghats while simuntaleously enhancing the econonic status of the of the century - old flower market. of Malik Ghat.

" Since creation, the earth’s surface has continually worked its

way, by trial and error, towards the condition of climate and racial groupings that existed at the beginning of recorded history. The length of time it took to do so is beyond comprehension: if the evolution of the world since creation corresponded in time to one year, then civilized man would have been upon it for only one minute. - The Landscape of Man (Geoffrey and Susan Jellicoe).

SITE ACTIVITY

THE SITE

Located below the Howrah Bridge on the banks of Hoogly River is Mallick Ghat - the unique 125 years old flower market which is held every morning. This is the largest wholesale flower market in eastern India where hundreds of stalls and thousands of people jostle for space bargain and make purchases in this 7 acre area.

The upper end of this segment converge at the apex. This provision is provided for the in-site slum dwellers to use both as dwelling and selling space of self-made local cafts.

The compact selling space designed in several levels can also be doubled as a public plaza after market hours.

The columns from the colonial style collonaded pavillion have been re-imagined as the primary vertical structural member of the glass parasol.

HOTEL & SOUK RETAIL SOUK & HOTEL , QATAR PROFESSIONAL WORK LEAD ARCHITECT

OCTOBER 2018 ROUPEN YACOUBIAN

The project consists of a mixed use development of a four star hotel and retail souk, located in Qetaifan Island North, a waterfront hub. The design aims to connect these two distinct uses through a single sculptural canopy, providing filtered light and a comfortable walk along the 400m long site. Taking inspiration from traditional souk planning, the design features several plazas and outdoor spaces. The typology is guided by a reinterpretation of traditional architecture and character translated into a contemporary language.

DUBAI SOUTH MID-RISE RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY, DUBAI PROFESSIONAL WORK LEAD ARCHITECT

MARCH 2017 LOUBNA AL ZALEK

The Dubai South masterplan development located on the confluence East-West corridors of Dubai is designed considering the urban blocks, public realm, street scapes and open spaces. This manifested into contemporary built forms that are orthogonal, reinforced by clean lines and a planning principle that is efficient, modular, flexible and sustainable. Contemporary materials and textures and attention to detail have been integral to the overall architectural vision. Thoughtful use of colours have added variety to the overall architectural language bringing in freshness and uniqueness to the concept.
