VIBRANT STREET CAPITOL HILL ECODISTRICT PROJECT ACADEMIC WORK | TEAM WORK | JAN.2013 - PRESENT | SITE: SEATTLE | TYPE: STREET DESIGN

The project Vibrant Street Plan demonstrates a creative urban street plan serving the historic and extraordinary Pike/Pine Corridor in the densest neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest. In response to community’s longterm vision and complex urbanism scenarios, the plan aims to enhance cultural identity and improve social and ecological performance of the Corridor by integrating existing community assets with a variety of green infrastructure and activated urban design strategies.

FRAMEWORK

The goals of the Vibrant Street directly respond to key challenges of the Pike/Pine Conservation Distric. The plan aims to create a diverse and livable neighborhood that is safe and supports social and ecological function. The core interest is to enhance the cultural identity of the community

MUD PLAZA SOUTH PARK COMMUNITY REVITALATION ACADEMIC WORK | INDIVIDUAL WORK | SEP.2013 - DEC.2013 | SITE: SEATTLE | TYPE: COMMUNITY PARK

Located at the waterfront of the Duwamish River in South Park community. The project aims to re-create a habitat for salmons and other species as well as catalyzing the community with public open space design. The habitat could be well adaptive to the tidal performance of the river. The plaza displays as a platform for community activities and ecological restoration.

LOWER DUWAMISH RIVER WATERSHED ANALYSIS The Duwamish River and estuary provide several important habitat and physiological functions to juvenile Chinook migrating out of the Green River drainage into Puget Sound. The Duwamish is used as a rearing area by juvenile Chinook salmon. Salinity, tide height, velocity, etc, these factors affect the habitat for salmon a lot. Steady decreases in juvenile Chinook densities were observed downstream of the Turning Basin, with the exception of the most-downstream station at Kellogg Island (RM 0.6). Based on these information, South Park can be a key to connect the habitat system and link the history with the future to provide a new vision to the community and even to the Low Duwamish Watershed.

CREATING HABITAT FOR SALMONOIDS AND OTHER SPECIES

MARSH AND MUDFLAT HABITAT SECTION The section shows how the design use gabions to create adaptive habitat for salmon and other species. The key point is to repair or recover all the types in shoreline habitats, like marshes mudflats, shallow subtidal zone, intertidal zone, riparian

RE-CHANNEL THE MEMORIAL SPACE IN BERLIN ACADEMIC WORK | INDIVIDUAL WORK | SEP.2014 - DEC.2014 | SITE: BERLIN | TYPE: COMMUNITY PARK

Engeldamm was a space for shipping channel and Berlin Wall in the history. The proposal project envisions transfering the neglected public space into a memorial park also for daily life use. The park takes the function of collecting and cleaning water to create water-featured landscape, recalling the past and mediating the intensed use of Spree River’s waterfront.

The project aims to give the memory of Berlin Wall and shipping canal back to the community. Inspired by the Berlin Wall Memorial, the memorial space could also provilde a recreation space for residents in the Kreuzberg community. The park programed with space like playground and water plaza is seemed as deconstruction of symbolic landscape.

COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR

The subway goes through the city, connecting Yizhuang with Beijing, but the stations of the subway are not well connected with nearby facilities and institiutions. The value of the station area is also undermined by low real estate development.

The site is at the center of potential commercial corridor on the main street. Its location gives itself the possibility to connect the community and catalyze the vibrancy of the city center. The strategy could be simple and straight by providing public space and mix-used utilities.

WAX LAKE DELTA VEGETATION EVOLUTION / ANIMATION

INTERNSHIP INDIVIDUAL WOTK / JUL 2013 This animation reveals the relationship between sediments accumulation and vegetation transformation through decades. The Wax Lake Delta is a river delta in Louisiana that was formed by rapid deposition of sediment following the creation of a canal through Wax Lake off of the Atchafalaya River in 1942. Due to the similarity in discharge between Wax Lake Delta and the proposed sediment diversions along the Mississippi River, we can use Wax Lake Delta as a model for these diversions. Studying Wax Lake Delta will help us understand how land building and ecological succession will occur for these diversions.
