Cynthia Chavez-Gradilla | Bad Magazine Ad
Research There have always been cuts and scrapes, but there haven’t always been adhesive bandages; and that fact was perfectly clear to a young housewife named Josephine Dickson. Back in the 1920’s, Josephine was living with her husband Earle, and though married life agreed with her, house keeping did not. When Earle came home from his job as a cotton buyer at Johnson & Johnson, Josephine would always have dinner on the table. Unfortunately, she’d also have several cuts or burns on her fingers. Without an adhesive bandage, Josephine had no easy way of bandaging her own cuts. Earle had to cut pieces of adhesive tape and cotton gauze and make a bandage for each wound. This happened day after day-and, day after day Josephine needed more bandages. Due to this, Earle hit upon an idea. Earle sat down and prepared some ready-made bandages and showed his boss at work his new invention and soon the first adhesive bandages were being produced and sold under the world famous BAND-AID® trademark! “Brand Heritage.” BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages. I have chosen the font Copperplate Gothic Bold because I feel that it goes great with the BAND-AID theme. It also loooks classy and direct, straight-tothe-point, just like the BAND-AID Flexi product.

Although you have added color to the ad, your image and basic layout has not changed. How could you describe the stretchiness of the band-aid in a different way? The objective is for you to find a new way to advertise the product.
Copperplate is an all caps font and is difficult to read in this type of format. It also has a formal feel and Band-Aid is more relaxed. A simple san serif would word best. Using the different styles, bold, italic would create contrast.
Your newspaper ad is too similar to the original ad. How could you describe the stretchiness of the band-aid in a different way?
