LANDSCAPE / URBAN VISUAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Identifying the potential visual impacts of a proposed development and proving through photomontage that changes to townscape views are going to be positive can be an essential element of a successful planning application. Working with the development team, we ensure that potential visual impacts are (where possible) mitigated for through appropriate design and landscape proposals.

MASTERPLANNING

Where residential development is proposed within the existing built environment, a thorough analysis of the surrounding urban context can help to prove the case for proposed height and massing of development proposals. Analysing the connectivity and walkability of a site can help make the case for higher density.

LANDSCAPE FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The Residential Landscape Design Team follows the core principals of urban design to prepare Landscape Strategy Frameworks for new developments. This process utilises the existing assets of the site, as well as those of the surrounding context, to maximise the ‘value’ of a scheme.

SERVICES AND SETTING OUT COORDINATION

On larger residential projects the coordination of below ground services, sightlines, tree planting and street lighting at detailed design stage is an essential part of the design process and is becoming a planning requirement.

INTEGRATED MASTERPLAN

Fully integrated and rendered Landscape Strategy Plans show how the landscape design integrates within the local context, whilst creating a distinct sense of place. These plans are becoming an increasingly important requirement for the planning process, assisting the client and design team to understand the core landscape design elements and aims.

MASTERPLAN RENDERING

Colour-rendered in Photoshop, these drawings show in outline all of the proposed surface treatments for the public realm, all boundary treatments, proposed tree planting and the layout design of areas of public open space. The key to materials can include photographic examples to give a clear indication of the design style palette that is proposed.

PLANTING IMPLEMENTATION & CONTRACT MANAGEMENT

At Liz Lake Associates we have a growing reputation for the quality of our residential planting design. This can be an important factor in the kerb appeal and saleability of residential properties. Whether a budget scheme or instant impact is required, we provide bespoke contextually appropriate and robust planting schemes that provide year round interest.

LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT, ECOLOGY & ARBORICULTURE

The right approach to arboricultural issues on residential sites is essential from planning proposals through to long term site management. We work with a select number of specialist Arboricultural and Ecological Practices, to undertake Phase 1 Habitat Surveys and Landscape Management Plan Reports, as well as preparing Code for Sustainable Homes Ecological Assessment Reports with the aim of achieving Code Level 3 BRE. All practices can successfully defend their recommendations at enquiry.

PHOTOMONTAGE

Having completed a Landscape / Urban Visual Impact Assessment we can identify and agree with our client and the Local Authority the key viewpoints for the preparation of photomontage of the proposals. We then visit the site with a surveyor to obtain the necessary digital survey coordinates to enable photomontage to be prepared by our specialist 3D computer modeller to public enquiry standard.

VISUALISATION

How do we convincingly visualise an environment that doesn't - yet – exist in the actual world? This is a huge challenge – though one, as landscape architects, we regularly face and are now industry leaders. Experience and imagination, along with powerful processing and cutting edge software such as 3D Studio Max, VRay and Photoshop, combine to create stunning rendered images with a realistic, even photorealistic quality.

The project required two large attenuation basins which created opportunities for a varied public open space. A play space was designed to suit varying age ranges whilst providing clear links into the wider open space. Overall, the scheme was completed through strong collaboration with the project architects, engineers, and ecologists to create a high-quality landscape scheme.

NEWHALL (FUSION)

HARLOW

C

ommissioned by Bellway Homes, Liz Lake Associates were tasked with creating landscape proposals for the award winning Newhall development in Harlow. ‘Fusion’ is one part of a phased development consisting of large land parcels that connect to create a large new community. This phase of the development will link into future adjacent residential areas and thereafter into the extensive network of public open space, play areas, sports pitches, landscape infrastructure and ecological corridors that are currently in existence or planned for the wider Newhall neighbourhood. 42% of the land within the overall Newhall masterplan area will ultimately be retained as woodland, parks and green infrastructure.

‘garden greens’ have been created and these will feature seating, ornamental planting as well as opportunities for informal toddler play.

The development consists of an array of forward thinking, unique houses and the landscape was designed to create the perfect foil for these dwellings to sit in and a stand out piece of landscape architecture. Working closely with Architects, Engineers and Planning Consultants, the design concepts developed to accommodate the site setting and the aspirations of the Local Planning Authority in combination with the needs of the Client. A number of publically accessible doorstop

This phase of the development features a strong framework of new street tree planting in the form of avenues and single lines of street trees. Street trees in hard landscape areas will be planted into special tree pits featuring root deflectors/underground root cells and watering tubes providing for the trees long term requirements. The combination of quality landscape surfacing materials and street tree planting will help to create a high quality public realm where pedestrians clearly have priority.

Like all of our planting designs, the site was separated into character areas (6 in total) that are each defined by a different style of planting, thus creating a number of interesting planting combinations that prevent any monotony in the soft landscaped areas. Much thought has been put into this to ensure varying colour, winter structure and low maintenance planting. Further to the planting proposals, Liz Lake Associates also developed a full landscape management plan for this development phase, ensuring that plants are well maintained in the future.

relation to the built form reflects the scale of the surrounding village pattern and rural nature of the area. The introduced trees and planting reinforce wildlife corridors and the links to existing footpaths and amenities settle the scheme into the village envelope. The retention of many existing trees was important to the scheme from the outset and these are supported by the planting of further proposed trees of native varieties which are incorporated into the planting proposals.

Roughly 50% of the site is Public Open Space and this includes Public Rights of Way for recreation. This allows access to the river in selected areas, so that wildlife is not disturbed. The River has been given space to allow for fluctuations in water level, with swales collecting and dispersing excess water. Furthermore, driveways are to use permeable materials with water storage capacity in its sub-base

ELY ROAD, MILTON

CAMBRIDGE

L

iz Lake Associates were appointed to develop a Landscape Masterplan, Detailed Planting Proposals, play equipment proposals and information signage for the 8.5 hectare site named Ely Road in Milton, known locally as North Lodge Park. The northern section of the site is the location of a small housing development of 89 homes with surrounding planting in front gardens to compliment the street scene and integrate the buildings into their countryside context. The original north lodge gate house has been restored as an impressive feature to the entrance of the site, complete with historically correct planting. The south of the site has been restored to allow the lake to become a focal point of the site, for residents and for wildlife. Adjacent to the lake are large recreational fields, play equipment for children and managed sports pitches and sports pavilion. The site has a long history of development dating back to the late 1700’s when this area became the grounds of Milton Hall built by Samuel Knight. The grounds of this large estate were designed by Humphrey Repton (1752-1818), a leading landscape designer of the time and figure of

historic importance to Landscape Architects today. Repton’s influence on the estate was to introduce the large serpentine lake to the south of the site and to surround it with groups of trees. This was designed strategically so that this could be seen in vistas from Milton Hall. This area had become degraded after many years of neglect, however our proposals have ensured that these values have been reintroduced into the landscape by way of new rejuvenative planting and bespoke maintenance strategies. In its more recent history the site was under the ownership of EDF energy as a depot for materials relating to the UK’s electrical supply network. From 1980 it was used as a training centre for the maintenance of overhead power lines. Liz Lake Associates produced a package of landscape drawings, information and specifications which successfully won planning permission and the site has since been implemented. LLA were also asked to create two information boards, one displaying the site’s history and the other showcasing probable ecology, to help site users engage with their surroundings.
