Christmas crochet community project

By Deb Bowden

m looking for interest from people who would like to help make a Community Christmas Tree by crocheting Granny/ Peggy squares during the year, which will then be attached to a teepee-type structure to make a Christmas tree for the foyer of the Ōmokoroa Settlers’ Hall next December

This type of tree was featured on the Seven Sharp show on 7th December last year, and I think it would be a great community feature here in Ōmokoroa

As the organiser of the Ōmokoroa Market, I have seen a lot of people who can crochet and think this would be a fun project to organise I already have some stallholders from far and wide who would like to participate in this project, and the more, the merrier

So, if you can help make these squares,

Holes – and why a timely tooth-check matters

Do you have a hole in one or more teeth? In golf you may be onto a winner with a hole in one, but with teeth it’s a different matter

Holes are a symptom of tooth decay Starting small and often without pain, they gradually become bigger if left untreated

Not only will a hole eventually make itself noticed with a toothache

If a cavity is not treated before it starts causing pain, you may need more extensive treatment later on So what are your treatment options?

If it is a tiny cavity, a fluoride application may help restore your tooth s enamel Most likely though you notice a deeper hole by running your tongue over the respective tooth surface, or because it is clearly visible At this stage, a tooth-colored, composite resin filling will probably fix the problem However depending on the size and location of the cavity, we may recommend a porcelain inlay or onlay

Size really matters: the bigger the hole and the bigger the filling the less structurally sound the tooth will become If more than half of the tooth structure is decayed, a crown would be needed to achieve a durable result

Therefore it is really important to get your teeth checked regularly not only for cavities But if you notice a hole in one of your teeth, please do get it sorted now No matter how far your cavity has advanced we have a solution restore your tooth that suits you to a tee please email me, and I will start a list of those interested I will send out a basic pattern and instructions on size, type of yarn needed, hook size etc If we make enough, we may be able to make a second tree for the library

I am also looking for 8ply/double-knit acrylic contributions If anyone has spare they don’t want that I can hand out to those making the squares, it would be greatly appreciated

Once Christmas is over, the tree could be dismantled, and the squares be crocheted together to make blankets which would be given to those in need Therefore none of the hard work will go to waste! Again, all help to do this would be appreciated, and the blankets can be made after Christmas is over Please advise your interest in helping or donating yarn to me on omokoroamarket@gmail com
