The Mayor wants to know where the funding is going to come from Has he not considered the benefits to the Dis trict’s children? Katikati Waihī Beach Residents and Ratepayers Association thought that even if Council has to fund fluoridation itself, the cost will be trivial compared to the cost of losing our Three Waters as sets, so we wrote to Council and asked how much it would cost Council Deputy CEO Gary Allis provided the following costs: Athenree: $286,000 for capital and $26,000/annum for management and monitoring Wharawhara: $280,000 for capital and $29,000/annum for management and monitoring. These costs are tiny in comparison to the $280 million of Three Waters assets the Mayor seems happy to give away In fact, the cost of fluoridating the Wharawhara supply is one thousandth of the value of the water assets that are going to be expropriated by the Govern ment An expropriation that Mayor Web ber supports Keith Hay, Chair, KWBRRA

The Editor responds: Some local au thorities have done a far better job than others in NZ of investing in and maintain ing water supply and resource consents to be compliant and safe Some Councils elsewhere have artifi cially kept rates lower while neglecting their core infrastructure in order to avoid conflict with ratepayer groups very simi lar to yourselves Access to fresh, clean water is crucially important to all life Transparent dia logue is needed for the public to have con

Wake up Christine Donehue, Katikati

Letters to the Editor

I was in a shop in Katikati recently, hearing about the abuse the assistant has been getting from customers when she offers them a mask She is immune compromised too I feel for her It’s upsetting to hear, but not unexpected Just a few people have taken advantage of the current situation to show their true natures I know from speaking to others on the front line that they, too, have suffered un acceptable abuse.

I know many members are in the vul nerable category for one reason or an other. They should not have to miss out. They should not have to watch from home on Zoom If they can manage that I am feeling cautious and with good reason this week

The Director General of Health has in structed Western Bay of Plenty District Council to fluoridate two of its water supplies, but Mayor Webber says there are “several important questions which need addressing” (August Lizard News)

was in Waikato Hospital theatre, which must have cost about $750,000 And to the taxpayers of NZ To everyone I come into contact with Many are also in the wrong age group

To the people in my community Espe cially in the retirement village. Many are now going down with Covid and other illnesses I saw ambulances here and in Park Road twice yesterday morning

Firstly, I have a responsibility to my self, as I have heart and lung conditions I’m super compromised I’m in the wrong age group, I was privileged to be given major surgery in December, and I have sleep apnoea To my only daughter, who has no other family And to my friends who have to pick up the pieces. To all the people in the health services, who are facing a crisis, worsening every day Also, to everyone who cared for me for a month in hospital and on my other visits Not to mention the whole day I

Ultimately, any government of the day will decide whether to pass or repeal legislation In my view, Council should negotiate as constructively as they can for locals. The rule of law applies. Cen tral government rules by Act of Parlia ment , regardless of whether or not you agree with the decisions of Council’s out going governance members

I’m sick of hearing people say, ‘‘I’m okay I don’t need to wear a mask I don’t watch or listen to the news ‘They’ can stay home ’’ It’s time they woke up, not to smell the roses but to take responsibility Not nec essarily for themselves but for those in their community Be it family, friends, or fellow citizens

Tim and Sharlene Pardy have, over the last seven years, been active members of the Ōmokoroa com munity Their three children, Lily, An nelise and George, have attended Ōmokoroa No 1 School, and Sharlene is the current Chair of the Board of Trustees

Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive can cer with the lowest survival rate of all the major cancers Over 630 New Zealanders are diagnosed with it every year, and ap proximately 550 die from it Tim successfully completed his chemotherapy in January this year and returned to work at the beginning of March Life went back to normal for the family Then at the beginning of August, Tim’s cancer markers rose above normal He went for a CT scan The results were not good. The cancer had relapsed in his liver and was now at Stage 4 Tim’s original tumour underwent ge netic testing to see if it would respond to immunotherapy, and surprisingly it came back positive Less than 2% of pan creatic cancer patients are suitable for this kind of treatment It uses a medicine called Keytruda to enable the immune system to recognise and fight the cancer It is Tim’s best chance of survival, but unfortunately, it is not funded for pan creatic cancer in New Zealand Treat ment costs $100,000 for the first year and then $20,000 for the second year

If you’ve got 101 questions running through your mind about where to start when selling your property, you’re not alone I am here to provide you with advice around all the stages of selling your property, from preparing your home for sale through to applying an e ective strategy, and working with you to achieve the best possible outcome.

If you’re thinking about selling spring cleaning your home before hitting the market is a great way to add appeal, enhance appearance and ultimately add value.

Quick fixes minor touch-ups can have a major impact on prospective purchasers Tightening loose fixtures, replacing lightbulbs, repairing broken tiles and tidying up rough paintwork can be easily completed without breaking the bank.

Finally, don’t forget about Daylight Saving starts this month, when we turn our clocks forward an hour on the 25th of September. Until next month, enjoy all the wonders of spring!

Brighten your exterior Pressure-wash the exterior of your home, concrete paths and driveway and remove all debris o the roof and gutters. Street appeal

An overgrown lawn and messy garden send a signal to buyers about how much (or how little) ongoing maintenance has gone into the property overall Take the time to trim and edge the grass, prune any shrubs and pull any weeds, perhaps do some planting to frame your home from the road.

he people of Katikati love their sport and social recreational activ ities, but the lack of a dedicated recreational centre with multiple uses has been holding back improving local lifestyles. Too many groups like football, cricket, wrestling, Scouts, Guides, martial arts, and athletics, do not have dedicated clu brooms, changing rooms, toilets or facil ities that are up to today’s standards or needs

The KKSRC has achieved a funding level to allow it to engage professional architects to create a final concept de sign and building plans The Katikati Av ocado Food and Wine Festival have wonderfully supported the project from the start Recently the Katikati Commu nity Board acknowledged the local sup port for the project by committing $50,000 in funding The committee are hopeful that WBOPDC will engage fur ther by matching the Community Board’s contribution Staged Building The Centre may be built in two stages Stage One will likely see much needed public toilets, changing facilities, club rooms, working space and a smaller in door facility Stage Two will be the large indoor centre and community multipur pose workspace The designs and plans will be ready for public viewing in early 2023

cause there’s nowhere to get changed or socialise afterwards It will be particu larly special for our rangatahi/youth to have a space where they will feel valued and safe to visit and belong to when they may have nowhere else to go, ” says Nicky Austin

The expectations are that local partic ipation rates will markedly increase once the new centre opens its doors “The entire district’s population is growing,” says Laura Young, “and parents are travelling in horrible traffic, from home and work to pick their kids up to take them out to activities If they can do those activities locally, then this will allow more quality family time without sitting for hours in the car ” Much of this project is for the younger generations but also will provide links to our older and aging population It is es pecially about having good facilities in our own community “We hope that ev eryone can get in behind the project and support it,” says Neil Harray Rick Gerrish says, “The KKSRC has es tablished a highly respected manage ment committee who are all dedicated to seeing the project through its journey from concept to completion The project will benefit all the residents of Katikati and surrounding areas, we hope every one can help support the build ” Article supplied

The ‘Positive Pathways for Rangi tahi’ research project by Katikati Taiao, in partnership with Te Rū nanga o Ngāi Tamawhariua and the Katikati Community Centre, discovered rangatahi in the Katikati and Waihī Beach ward faced many barriers in their transition from school into employment or further education, such as lack of con fidence, skills, poor public transport, and/or a feeling of disconnect from the community, that can leave rangatahi feel ing unsupported and lost Through funding from DIA, TECT and Bay Trust, Katikati Community Centre ran the Rangatahi Positive Pathways Pilot and employed Youth Employment Coach Melody Lamb, who actively en gaged with a combination of Pre NEETs, NEETS, Job Seekers, College Students, education providers and local busi nesses around education, training, or employment

The Careers Coach will also be avail able for the above services; however, their primary responsibility is to facili tate the youth employment course “Li cense to Work” (LTW) along with the Activities Connector. There will be two intakes per year for the LTW course, one at the end of February and the second at the beginning of term three The age range for the License to Work program is 16 19 The age range is subject to change depending on availability Labour List MP Angie Warren Clark, WBOPDC Mayor Gary Webber, Katikati Community Centre Past Chair David Marshall, Present Chair Zinta Krummins, manager Pauli and Youth Employment Coach Melody Lamb, and Valarie Uilou from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tamawhariua were among those who attended an event on 5th August to launch the ser vice and open the premises

The land for the first hall was donated to the district by the Armstrong family, and the hall itself was built by master builder David Borell, assisted by volun teers from the area who donated labour and materials A government grant for war memorials that were also commu nity assets was also a big help

The people have spoken

The hall was opened in an important ceremony on 22nd November 1922, with the plaques being unveiled by Mrs Tangitū and Mrs Armstrong

There will be something for everyone, including circus activities, a variety of food vendors and an evening cabaret

After living in Ōmoko roa for 20 years, my family are relocating to the Katikati district, and I bring six years of community board experience, including being the chair of Ōmokoroa community board It takes experience and knowledge of the council, its workings, employees, and the community to ensure that Katikati gets the best value from the WBOPDC By already serving on the board this experience, and through my professional training and active involvement with interest groups, I will advocate for Katikati's needs and ensure we maintain Katikati as a priority area for WBOPDC I will ensure that Katikati obtains the developments it needs for a thriving, growing community whilst ensuring that no individuals/minorities suffer I will ensure community consultation and input occurs Teresa Sage

My principal place of residence is in the Katikati Community Board area Good principals have not changed! Rates and affordability and justification are a major issue, and council, through community boards, must take a sensitive view of affordability Policy that supports “ one country, one law, one people, must be paramount! Central govt via local govt must have a greater affinity and compassion, for ordinary people That is non negotiable! That is a corner stone of democracy, our people fought for years for this principal I had 10 years on the power board, helped get second power line to Katikati for electrical security for developing ki wifruit industry

Lastly, I know discussing the transport woes of the Western Bay of Plenty is well travelled ground for long time res idents, but thank you to all those who at tended last month’s public meeting and voiced their support for more invest ment in our local roads There was a lot of frustration about the piecemeal solu tions NZTA have taken to the region’s transport issues, particularly the con struction of kilometres of barriers on State Highway 2, which has made enter ing and exiting side roads difficult The transport needs of the region will only become greater as we experience more growth in the coming decades It’s time to get on with the projects that have been planned for years; a four lane high way and a bypass at Katikati If you have any issue you wish to dis cuss with me, don’t hesitate to get in touch by either calling 0800 550 330 or emailing mpcoromandel@parliament govt nz

If you were unable to visit TOLO this August, you missed an absolute treat The amazing John D Wilson displayed his surreal 3D art, along with other pieces, including landscapes and pieces paying homage to LS Lowry, Banksy and Salvador Dali what a feast! John will be back in December with a new exhibition, so make a note in your diary Looking ahead to (Blue) September, we will again be focussing on the men folk and promoting awareness of Prostate Cancer, so a shout out to all you talented creative guys to get in touch so we can include your work and if you like some background on your creative journey; we love to know more about the items we are lucky enough to display And make a note in your diary for Fri day 30th September, an evening for Blokes Bits & Beers wives, partners and significant others also welcome. The fellas may all be staunch, but this is a real opportunity to nag them into under standing the importance of looking after themselves because cancer in all its forms affects not only the patient but also their family and friends, and early detection and treatment makes all the difference in the world If you have a man themed item, whether it’s a photograph, painting, sculpture, gift from grandpa, old jacket, let us know we would love to include it in our Blue September display Heads up for October Breast Cancer Awareness month This year we will be supporting Project Uplift again We did so fabulously well last year Let’s see if we can do it again We will also be col lecting items to support Women’s Refuge, such as personal toiletries soap, toothpaste, etc Why not buy

By Peter Smith When the MenzShed opened, they did not envisage being part of ‘art’ Local artist, John Wilson, whose work includes Reverse Perspec tive Pictures, which means they have 3D and movement effects, asked the Shed to help him in making the templates on which he paints and which replace a can vas This required many hours of work making a jig on which the template could be made, with all the correct angles, and which would allow more templates to be made John’s current output is about two per month, and each piece of art entails about ten hours of work John has been doing this type of art for about 20 years; the concept started as a child when he made templates from cardboard President Mike Hayden says working in and with the community is a key part of the Shed’s purpose, and working with John’s template was a challenge they en joyed

By Hon Scott Simpson MP For Coromandel 88,324 public submissions have been presented to Parliament over the Government’s proposed Three Waters reforms Despite this response, it’s unlikely that Labour will use the sub mission process as anything more than a rubber stamp exercise They remain in tent on pushing through these reforms as quickly as possible National has serious concerns about the accountability of the proposed water entities This has been echoed by the Au ditor General, who advised that the gov ernance structure makes it unclear how the entities would be held accountable Labour needs to listen to the submis sions and admit that these reforms have been broken from the start If they push through this legislation against overwhelming opposition, the next National government will repeal the changes and ensure water assets remain in local ownership

Last week I appreciated the great turnout in Pāpāmoa to meet my colleague Mark Mitchell, Opposition Spokesman for Police We had an excellent Q&A session, and Mark shared Na tional’s commitment to better support our Police The bad economic news we all hear daily will continue to have an even greater impact on people’s lives, and it’s impor tant that we all remain vigilant about locking our cars and houses and removing temptation from view

By E J Weller Since the beginning of Term 3, our tamariki have been busy at Ōmokoroa Playcentre, playing with paint, clay, bak ing soda and vinegar reactions, family play, playdough and endless other activ ities at the centre We’ve welcomed a few new babies recently, and our older chil dren have enjoyed sitting quietly and watching the babies, rocking them gen tly, and talking to them Our mixed age sessions mean that our babies are in session with children up to five years old, and this allows for beauti ful friendships to develop between chil dren of all different ages At Playcentre, we have a strong belief in tuakana teina, whereby older and younger children (and children and adults) can mix and intermingle and teach each other different things Some of our families join because they are new to the area and want to meet other people with young children, and we ’ ve welcomed a number of new families recently Tuesday Explorer sessions have been exploring Pahoia Beach and Tuapiro Re serve this term; there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing! The tamariki love being at the beach in the winter There are so many birds, trees and clay to explore, and they love playing in the water, even in August Our Space programmes are going re ally well, with a new programme begin ning each term, meaning that we can host up to fifteen families with new ba bies every few months Ōmokoroa Playcentre will be holding our annual pre loved fundraiser on Sun day, 11th September, 9 12pm Come and grab a bargain from $1 We’ll have a sausage sizzle and bake sale too We’ve got all sorts of clothes, toys, books, and nursery items for families with children under 6. See our Facebook page or email us omokoroa@playcentre org nz for more details

The negative impact of gangs remains the real concern for us A National Government will reduce the power of gangs and violent crime with the implementation of Dispersal Notices, Non Consorting Orders, Warrantless Firearms Prohibition Powers and the banning of gang insignia in public entirely.

PHOTOS:

In the last five years, there has been an increase in violent crime of 21%, and yet we ’ ve had a 25% decrease in the prison population, thanks to Labour’s policy to lower prisoner num bers Just releasing criminals to meet policy targets when they’re not ready to rejoin society means more work for al ready stressed Police

Playcentre: growing communities Happy reunions on Tuesday Playcentre sessions PHOTO: Supplied New trap technology For our native species the

Most New Zealanders wish the com mon brushtails had never been intro duced here; our mild climate, tasty native bush and lack of natural predators have allowed it to thrive and wreak havoc But for Australians, it is a loved, native mar supial The difference for Kiwis who now live in Sydney is living with possums that enjoy full protection Even relocating pesky possums that have moved into a roof cavity or are foraging happily in gar dens and fruit trees is now illegal for city dwellers We can admire possums ’ deter mination and adaptability, but the sad fact is they don’t belong here For most New Zealanders, possums are too de structive to our natural environment

Term 4 planning is now underway and the excitement is so high for us parents to see what new ideas and challenges we can put together for the kids So many new interests are emerging, bringing with them ideas and creativity New fam ilies joining us recently also help bring life and excitement to the centre and along side our toddlers and little big kids we now have several wee bubs under one to look forward to watching grow! As we watch them learn and evolve each week, it’s an incredibly satisfying ex perience for any parent to see their little one challenge themselves in various ways, and know that not only are you helping that growth, but are helping shape their futures You can’t help but wonder what skills and life lessons will stay with them as they continue their journeys I know for sure the one thing that I hope Milo carries with him forever, if nothing else It’s the magic Playcentre brings It’s happiness

The Whakamārama group will be in stalling a new, automatic self resetting rat and possum trap along a section of bush boundary to test its effectiveness against incursions from an untrapped area The trap has been developed and made by New Zealand Auto Traps here in the Bay of Plenty Early results have been impres sive The Friends of the Blade have set a goal of ‘working smarter’ against preda tors and hope that this new tool will get us a step closer Anyone who is interested in joining a small and enthusiastic man agement group or our larger pool of equally enthusiastic predator control volunteers is very welcome to contact us for more information by emailing friendsoftheblade@gmail com best Craig Watson

While we, as adults, concern ourselves with day to day trivial things, nothing makes me happier than watching my son arrive on a Tuesday morning and greet his friends and their whānau with hugs as they toddle off to play It’s pure magic in a crazy world

Atrip to Sydney to visit Kiwi family members living there has given an insight into a shift in attitude be tween NZ and Australia that would rival the breaking up and drifting apart of Gondwanaland It concerns the attitude of both countries to the native Australian marsupial, the brushtail possum

Friends of the Blade and other predator control groups are trialling new technol ogy to reduce possum numbers, along side tried and tested trapping methods

Recently, while recovering from Covid, I had some time to think on the crazy world we live in How resilient our kids are to be grow ing up in these unprecedented times My son was born in May 2020 so masks, lockdowns, isolations and all the rest are his normal Unfortunately, we are now facing in fluenza, colds and RSV all on top of Covid, and while terms 2 and now 3 have been a funny time for us with families in and out with sickness and isolation each week as we all come back together it strikes me how lucky we are to have our commu nity at Playcentre to support each other through these times

Another incredible night of fun and laughter run by our very hard working PTA, who are very happy to announce that the quiz event held in our newly re opened school hall raised $26K towards our senior two bay swing and Super Nova installa tion This would not be pos sible without the amaz ing support from question round and table sponsors, auction, raffle, and spot prize dona tions, and of course, those that attended on the night, who bid and competed in our fun games to raise as much money as possible

The various histories of Miss Ōmokoroa Robotics kids, rock star parents

Every child also was gifted a water and science kit to make filtered water at home It was awesome to see so many par ents and siblings turn up to the after school session, during which children had the opportunity to show their gauntlets, hear from local young people who work in the robotic field here in NZ and participate in other fun science ex periments We look forward to their next visit

What a great opportunity our children had to use their STEM (Science, Technol ogy, Engineering and Maths) skills when the ‘STEM in the Community’ team vis ited recently for two days Students created a gauntlet from card board, string and straws Many cutting, ruling, glueing, tying, painting and mea suring skills were used to create these stringdraulic hands, which were con trolled by their fingers

When the original Boat Club held its regatta, usually on Anniversary Week end, the day often ended with a Miss Ōmokoroa contest Young women pa raded in their bathing suits, and even younger girls vied for Miss Junior Ōmokoroa A sash and monetary awards were given to the winners Whether this was annual or just alter nate years or some years, we are still try ing to find out The Ōmokoroa History Group would like to hear from anyone who has information on participants, winners, or frequency Photos to add to our collection would be most welcome too. Eddie Adams named his speed boat ‘Miss Ōmokoroa” The late Jocelyn Hicks collated background information on this for the Western Bay of Plenty Museum in Katikati when they held an exhibition on Sporting Heroes of the Bay There are photos of the boat at TOLO, both at Ōmokoroa and at Lake Taupo Eddie travelled widely with his pride and joy in the 1950s and 1960s Miss Ōmokoroa, the racehorse Allan and Nelle Unsworth owned racehorses in the late 1950s Their share milker, Dave Perkinson, trained horses for them, training them on local beaches as well as taking them into the Tauranga race course regularly for familiarisation runs ‘Miss Ōmokoroa’ and ‘Jealous Lady’ were Allan’s, while Nelle owned ‘Sapphire Star’ Photos of these are also in the cur rent history display at TOLO

Congratulations to Paula Beilby, friends and whānau for winning the quiz night in fine fashion and congratulations to ‘Kiss’ for taking out the ‘Best dressed’ competition

The water is getting warmer and the sulphur yellow slicks of pine pollen tell me it’s time to get started on my seeds All that’s needed for the little babies is moisture, warmth and love, and with that in mind, I try to find a warm spot (airing cupboard, sunny window sill) and get the seeds in pots or trays and warm them up Covering with glass or other clear products gets them warmer sooner Every year I sow twice as much as I want to harvest in the knowledge that the birds and the slugs will have at least half At the gardens, we are plucking the slugs from the sidewalls of the beds and awaiting fresh compost to fill up the beds The polytunnel is working well with daily temperatures up in the low 30s, and surprise visits from fledgling blackbirds and thrushes who are creep ing under the walls! Volunteers are popping up everywhere and are welcome every Thursday and Saturday morning to help with sowing planting and composting. We have a few surplus bean seeds from last harvest if anyone would like to try a few climbing beans And slug whisperers are always welcome

By John Collier that time of start scrabbling around the old garden seed ther mometers If the sea is anything to go by, it’s soon going to be time to sow, germi nate, fertilise and get backache in the garden.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Harbourmaster team has had its busiest winter in recent memory, assisting with the salvage of a number of boats in Tauranga Harbour

He says with cloudy days, vessels rely ing on solar should also be checking bat tery levels to ensure automatic bilge pumps are operating

It is essential that boat owners check on their vessels regularly to catch any is sues early

The recent incidents were caused by a mooring line chafing/wear ing on a sharp edge, boats slowly taking on rainwater, and the bilge pump failing These could have been easily prevented with some regular maintenance checks

Ōmokoroa Community Gardens It’s

The last week in July alone saw four vessels needing assistance from the Har bourmaster team after heavy rain and strong winds One vessel was partly submerged, needing water to be pumped out and the boat removed from the Harbour, while another sunk to the seafloor The Har bourmaster team is currently working with this boat’s owner on a salvage plan

Boat keep Harbourmaster team busy September seeds and slugs

“We have had numerous reports of boats sitting lower in the water from tak ing on rain this winter and three boats that sunk at their moorings over June and July,” Mr Rapson says

Salvaging a boat that has sunk on its mooring can be a costly exercise for the owner, with the bill coming in between $10 $15,000 per day for a commercial dive team and suitable barge The boat owner is liable for these costs, and de pendent on the size of the boat and how long it takes to get it out of the water, it can cost much more In some cases, the boat may be dis posed of and destroyed by the Regional Council under the authority of the Mar itime Transport Act 1994, with the boat owner liable for all costs incurred Article supplied

Two other vessels broke free from their mooring and anchor Deputy Harbourmaster Daniel Rapson says the salvage operations are a stark reminder for boat owners to check their vessels on moorings

The design consisted of two pavilions separated by a central spine that is the main entry Northern light could enter a southern pavilion while also proving a clear delineation between the areas where the children should be and where they should not After hours, com munity based groups can use the southern pavilion without accessing the main building

The building is designed with a high level of sustain ability and cost effective energy efficiency In the Main Activity Area, a highly insulated concrete raft slab ther mal mass stores heat gained from the northern aspect with the roofline creating optimal slab absorption of sunlight in winter and shade in summer

Keeping the children safe from potentially harmful building chemicals was key

The New Zealand plantation Douglas Fir timber cladding is naturally durable and contains no wood preservatives A similar thought process was applied to the decks with chemical free, heat treated plantation pine where children directly interact Interior materials were chosen with low or no formaldehyde in resins and glues and low VOC paints for internal situations

The judges’ comments include: “This joyful kinder garten is made up of two strong building forms that provide a clear and confident entry from a busy car park Its contemporary shed like appearance gives a nod to its rural neighbours Inside, generous, light filled spaces comprise a sociable and welcoming learning en vironment that is easily navigated at playtime and rush hour by small people, teachers, and caregivers Te Puna Kindergarten is an asset to future generations creating a practical and playful space for tamariki that delights and inspires ”

It is a modern take on a rural barn or ancillary build ing, responding to the neighbouring sites and the site’s history Traditional barn like materials such as timber and corrugated steel compliment and embed the notion of a modern farm building

The Kindergarten required a new purpose built building that could also serve the broader community outside operational hours

One of the positives for me personally was not only the awesome amount that was raised, but the opportunity to meet and fellowship with the amazing people of this community ” After a few late donations, $6,571 50 was raised in total All proceeds will be sent directly to Barnabas Aid Fund and Mission without Borders, both credible organisations with people on the ground in Ukraine directly assisting those in the middle of the conflict in such desperate need We hope that everyone involved will be abundantly blessed as they have blessed others Finally, congratulations to Grace Ben ton, aged 6, who won first prize for the kids’ colouring competition Well done Grace Article supplied Local Apata company, Mod Architecture, has won the ‘Education’ category of the Te Kāhui Whai hanga NZ Institute of Architects 2022 Waikato/Bay of Plenty awards Their winning design was Te Puna Kindergarten, located on Minden Road. The Kindergarten was under pressure to find new premises after the NZTA had an agreement to purchase their previous site to make way for a roading develop ment

The new site was a small lot, located in a back corner, bounded on one side by rolling pasture, the rear with established trees, and commercial enterprise to the others The relatively flat site has a great northern aspect, and ideal western car park access were perfect for the Kindergarten’s brief

Ventilating skylights on the southern roof plane allow heat to escape in summer while mitigating non direct sunlight End to end opening windows and doors also allow for natural cross ventilation

The weather turned out and the people turned up to make the re cent fundraiser hosted by Ōmoko roa Community Church a roaring success “As a church we wanted to do some thing to help the people in Ukraine and it was decided a garage sale would be a great way to raise a good amount of funds We wanted to involve the whole community as we knew there were many people who were keen to help Ukraine, but did not know how they could personally contribute Despite having to delay the event initially, once we finally got the go ahead, it was so en couraging to see goods start to pour in from the very day the advertisement went out,” says Tanya, one of the event organisers We would like to take this opportunity to extend enormous thanks to all those who supported this special event Many from our community got busy cleaning out their cupboards to donate items for sale, and many beautiful artworks by some very talented local artists were created especially for the event too Vol unteers gave up their time not only on the day, but during the week prior too, to sort goods, bake, set up the hall, man the tables, paint faces, brew coffee, cook sausages, and clean up after Of course, we are indebted to all those from the community who came along and generously donated over and above the value of asking price in many cases, just to be able to support the cause It wouldn’t have been the success it was without the big heartedness of so many from our local surrounds We’re not sure exactly how many turned up on the day, but over 200 sausages were grilled all sold which is evidence of a fantastic turnout Special thanks also to the person who bought two sausages with a $50 note and in sisted on no change! It is a wonderful privilege to be part of such a generous community and we are truly grateful to be able to forward these much needed funds on to those in need “The day of the event was perfect a beautiful, fresh, sunny July day It was so awesome to be part of this amazing event, surrounded by all the generosity and blessings of all the people involved

Question 8: I brush my teeth regularly Why is this not good enough?

l i z a rd n e w s . n e t September 2022 | Lizard News | 43 b kground Omokoroa Law Philip Annan | Geoff Annan 1 McDonnell Street, Omokoroa | 548 1048 | wow@annanlaw.nz Open mornings Monday Thursday | Tauranga Office 578 8888 This information is brought to you by your dentists with a difference

The two of the most common problems we see in our daily work gum disease and cavities are highly preventable by good, regular oral hygiene Here is our simple rule of two for healthy teeth: • brush and floss your teeth two times a day,

• do it for two minutes each time (set a timer initially to get a feel for how long two minutes are, or play a two minute piece of music on your phone),

reat that you brush regularly! But brushing alone is not enough to keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy Toothbrushes manual and electric ones can only clean the visible tooth surfaces, and the result depends on your brushing technique Even if you brush correctly, a brush can t reach between your teeth, yet that s where gum disease and tooth decay start

In a statement after the meeting, deputy chief executive Gary Allis said the site checked several boxes for the com munity and allowed council to run a shared operating model “Modern libraries offer the community so much more than a service for borrow ing books,” he said “They’ve become a centre for the entire community to meet, to connect, to learn, to get inspired and to share knowledge and experience

To remove biofilms and plaque as well particles stuck between your teeth, you also have to use tiny interdental brushes or dental floss There are different types of floss: waxed unwaxed spongy super floss floss tape or floss sticks with a small handle With floss too using the right technique is key to reach and clean each interdental surface properly If you find flossing difficult a water flosser might be the right option for you Not only does it clean between your teeth Unlike string floss and interdental brushes, a water flosser can also clean the tooth surfaces you miss when brushing, e g in the back of your mouth

The Beach Road site was chosen over the other shortlisted option of Te Mata Reserve on Wilson Road This was sup ported by Council staff, the architects and had majority support from the com munity

“It’s really vital that our community li braries do play a part in schools and ed ucation,” said Henry

The final request was for Council to design a new bill board at the entrance of Ōmokoroa, including the to hutō Council invited the students of Room 10 to help with the new design Room 10 Teacher Deirdre Duggan says the kids are really passionate about getting some change in the community “The kids have found out through this pro cess it’s actually the legal way you spell the name I wanted to take them though the process of how to make change the proper way, and who do we need to talk to about doing it ” Room 10 has the support of the Pirirākau hapū and local te reo Māori linguist Te Raniera Ormsby Tiki They have endorsed the efforts and note that tohutō is im portant part of the whakapapa of the place, as it often acknowledges that something important happened there or someone important lived there or died there The rangatahi are also learning about the process of social change and community change Deidre says this is also a chance for the students to look at what goes on behind the scenes at the decisions that are made in our community “Ōmokoroa’s growing so fast and its changing, and we ’ ve got to make sure that it’s changing the right way.

The tohutō also tells people how to pronounce the name correctly They ask that Council respect the lan guage and the culture by adding a tohutō Four speakers from the class, spelled out their case to the Councillors in attendance, and asked that Council help to get all of the Council signage in the area changed to include a tohutō on Ōmokoroa, and that the other signage around the Western Bay is reviewed and any that have a legal name with a tohutō are updated

Looking to the future these rangatahi will be able to come back to the community and say we helped that social process ”
