A Note From Liz Hello Everyone, Well it has sure been a long time since my last note. Having missed all of you and your rides, I am proud to announce the return of American Motorhead Magazine. Throughout the magazine you will notice many changes, yes your old favorites are still here. This issue however does not contain “It’s My Rides” or “Feature of The Month”, I promise next month’s will have both. So that being said be ready for your rides to be photographed. We are excited to announce a new addition to the Motorhead Family, Jami Morris, she has a background in marketing, photography, and advertising. She will be attending shows, so make sure you take a moment to get to know her. The magazine has been “Overhauled” we went out of print to take a deep look at changes and new things to include within our pages. First is “Ladies Touch”, which features women in the field. Then we have, “Ozone’s Old School Lessons”, by Scott Owen, describing basic techniques. Next is “Trend Setters”, showcasing icons that have made our hobby what it is today. Then we take a look into “Yesteryear”, to describe parts and pieces of automobiles and how they have changed over the years. Last but certainally not least is our “Spotlight of The Month”, focusing on a certain club or business. Neil and I would like to take a personal moment to mention John S. Olsen, “The Man With A Vision”. Having been family of John’s for over 30 years, we saw a man that enjoyed the love of Christ, and those around him. He had a vision that to this day is still enjoyed by those this magazine has touched. Inside the center of this issue is our tribute to him. John, you are forever with us, we miss and love you. If you have any questions, or coments regarding information printed in the magazine, or just want to chat with us, feel free to email us at photozbyliz@gmail.com or call us at 309-642-0930, we are available anytime.

American Motorhead Magazine 3/22/2013 2:46:26 AM

Hey everyone, I'm Ozone! With a wink and a nod from Liz & Co. @ American Motorhead Magazine, I will be writing monthly columns for this fine publication! In the future we will span the automotive globe, if you will, and will include all kinds of D.I.Y. (do it yourself) information and "how to" advise. We will touch on mechanical, body, paint, upholstery, glass, trim, plastics, fiberglass, vehicle maintenance and lots more! After over 40 years in the industry, I have seen or done just about everything. Not all things done turned out perfect, but maybe through my screw-ups and successes, you might be able to pick up some helpful tips on your project. Feel free to drop a note to American Motorhead Magazine or my web site ozoneautobody.com with any questions or suggestions on future columns. This first column may seem a little lame or kiss (keep it simple stupid) but I can assure you we will get into more advanced columns as we progress. 1st in the series........... All you car guys or gals, you have a very important job to do! If you are "THE" car person in your family, it is very important that every week or two, you take a look at all the vehicles your family drives. And check the obvious stuff! Look at wiper blade edges for wear and replace if needed, they are cheap! Look at the rear wiper if you have one, it is the most neglected of them all, and dab a little lube on the rear arm, it will thank you for it. You already know to check all fluids to make sure they are full and clean. Power steering and transmission fluids should also be smelled, to check for any bad or burnt smell to them. If a burnt smell exists, replace the fluid. Engine oil should also be smelled to check for a gasoline smell. If gassy, replace the oil and filter. A rich running or hard starting engine can foul the oil in a hurry. Engine oil and filter should be changed every 3000 to 5000 miles and every 6 months, or both. Old oil breaks down over time American Motorhead Magazine April2013 Issue.indd 5

and will not lubricate as well so the 6 months is a must on cars not driven much. Check air pressure in all tires including the spare. Low tires can kill your fuel mileage rating efficiency, and the price of gas is......A LOT! Do a walk around the vehicle with all lights and flashers going to make sure all bulbs are working. Cops don't think it's cool when bulbs are burnt out and a ticket would have bought a bunch of replacement bulbs. Look at the color of your anti-freeze. If it's dirty or discolored, flush and change it. Be aware and know there are several types of anti-freeze out there. Old school green, yellow and reds. Most GM products use Dex-Cool (red) but Toyota has a special formula red also, which is slightly different. DO NOT mix different types together if possible. I have seen greens and yellows added to red systems, and some have turned it to a kind of mud! All antifreeze is not universal. Make sure the anti-freeze is either "ready to use" or dilute the full strength with a 50/50 mix of water. Anti-freeze water, like battery water, should be distilled, not tap water. If you don't believe that, fill a glass with tap water and let sit overnight. Then look at the bottom of the glass....eewww...look at all that stuff! As "THE" car person, you can add a lot of life to any vehicle with these simple checks. All for now. Ozone

The Central Illinois Cruisers car club is based out of Peoria, Illinois and was formed in 1997. Chuck McCarty and his daughter Amanda are just two of the McCarty family’s faces you will see greeting each cruiser and spectator as they arrive. The club holds many events each weekend throughout the eight month season. Their smiling faces are there to direct traffic, mingle with the crowd and learn more about your rides. All proceeds from the shows and cruise ins are donated to area charitable organizations. It has been a pleasure working with and getting to know the McCarty family. American Motorhead Magazine has been covering their events for several years and has never been disappointed with the turnout of both members and fellow spectators. Highlights of some of the shows are on the next page. Ariticle By: Neil Beiersdorf

Trend Setters George Barris is known throughout the world as the King of Kustomizers. His creations are legendary in the world of television and motion pictures. He has created cars for the Batman Series(Batmobile), The Munsters( Munster Koach), the Beverly Hillbillies, Kit from Knight Rider and many more. George Barris was born November 20, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. He had tragedy in his young life when his mother died and his father sent him and his brother to live with their aunt and uncle. George’s aunt was a big influence in his life. She encouraged him to pursue art, drama, music and design. George was fascinated with model air craft and pursued the hobby earnestly through his teen years. His diligence paid off because he won many competitions. During WWII George moved to Los Angeles where he built custom designs for private buyers. It is when “Kustom” became associated with George Barris name. George also briefly built and raced his own cars. These endeavors brought the attention of the movie industry, and he was soon asked to create cars for use by studio executives and stars. George also had a hand in creating cars that the studio used for movie props. George met and married his wife Shirley in the 1950’s. George acknowledged her as an asset to his success. Shirley promoted his company any way she could, George’s company, Barris Kustom Industries which is in still operation today. George is still running the company at the age of 89. Model car manufactures Revel, MPC and AMT was given an opportunity to use the designs of George Barris when he decided to license them out to spread the Barris name in hobby, department and discount stores across America. The idea is to keep the Barris in the minds of the enthusiastic model builders.

8 www.americanmotorheadmagazine.org April2013 Issue.indd 8

In the 1960’s George had additional interest from the television studio’s to design vehicles for television shows that were in conception. It is during this time that he purchased and a Lincoln Futura and due to inadequate time frame to design from scratch he used the Futura for the Batmobile. He had Gene Cushenberry modify the car to his specifications. The show was an immediate hit and George’s reputation grew. George had ownership of the Batmobile until January 2013 when he sold it at auction for $4,620,000 to the new owner Rick Champagne from Arizona. George Barris is still designing. In 2010 he designed the 2010 Camaro Spirit as a Special George Barris Edition and it was introduced to the public. It will be with anticipation on what new creation will be coming out of the Barris Kustom shop next. Several of George Barris’ master creations can be seen in Volo, Illinois at the Volo Automobile Museum. If you are looking to get a closer look make sure to take a weekend trip and look till your heart is content. Aritcle By: Neil Beiersdorf Photos courtesy of Volo Auto Museum

American Motorhead Magazine had the honor of attending the 6th Annual RP Expo event of 2013. This event grows each year and never ceases to amazing those that attend. This year we decided to tell you from four different views what we experienced at the show. The first one is that of new attendee Jami Morris (new member of Motorhead). The second is that of 6 year old Allie Olsen (previous attendee and smallest member of Motorhead). The third will be that of Neil Beiersdorf (second time attendee of the event and long time member of Motorhead). The forth will be Liz Rucker Beiersdorf (attendee of all but one and owner of Motorhead).

The Racing and Performance Expo was completely a new experience for this new addition to American Motorhead Magazine team. The parking lot was full and there was a crowd of men, women and children outside waiting for the shuttle to the other exhibit across the street. Once you enter the building and into the main exhibit the amount of people were plenty but not overwhelming. The flow of the crowd was fluid and everyone was courteous to each other. From left to right there were booths set up with every kind vendor; all you had to do was pick a direction and go. Since there were three of us on our team we split up and divided and conquered. Approaching the reps from the vendors was easier than I thought it would be. They were friendly and informative and willing to help anyone and everyone they could. I took pictures of everything that caught my eye and when I couldn’t get close enough the reps allowed me behind the ropes or table to get the shot. Some reps even got in on the fun of posing for a shot with their product, and they were very enthusiastic about it. I found that I really liked the rim vendors and got some help with upcoming articles about brakes. I had an opportunity to chat with Christi Edelbrock she was generous with her time and I was able to have a picture taken with her and receive a signed hat. After having an awesome lunch picnic style, we strolled into my favorite part of the day. When walking into the showroom with all the classic cars it was like walking into a red carpet affair. Everyone used hush tones and you could hear all the clicks from all the cameras taking pictures. I wanted to spend the rest of the day there just admiring and day dreaming about having one someday. I saw too many to pick a favorite. The next day when we went to the engine challenge it was amazing to see the talent of future innovators and of techs that love the ins and outs of engines. For a first timer it was an incredible experience and I saw so many things that I would love to see again and I look forward to next year. Jami

I had so much fun! My favorite was taking pictures of the cars, getting my hand painted (thank you Racers for Christ), and all the goodies. I remember one of my goodies was candy with the people’s name on it and then someone gave me a squishy car. The boys and girls that did the engine thing (Hottrodders of Tommorrow engine challenge) that was pretty neat looking. The people were very nice to me and I got to get into a car and climb on a motorcycle. I met the boy named Noah he was the same size as me and he drove a car! But I think my favorite was the cars, they were really, really cool because they looked like racing cars. I hope I get to go back and see stuff again. Allie On February 23, 24 Motorhead Magazine attended the 6th annual Race and Performance Expo (RPE) in St Charles, Illinois outside of Chicago. As in other years past there were vendors for every performance part you could think of. This year was different. This year the expo had grown so big that they had to open another hall across the street from the main building to accommodate all the vendors and people present. This year there was not only parts vendors there but also they introduced midget and cart racing into the venue. Look for the article on this in the magazine featuring a 7 year old boy who races and has his own car. It has always amazed me and warmed my heart to see our youth participate and at the level that they do so. We had a wonderful two days in St. Charles and took a lot of wonderful pictures especially of the cars I once owned when they were new. We took our 6 year old daughter with us and let her take pictures. She does an awesome job for her age. We are looking forward to next year and the spring and summer cruses and shows coming up. Until next time keep your motors running and we will see you soon. Neil Well, first and formost thank you Tom for providing us the oppurtunity to cover the event again. We are hoping to actually set up a booth at next year’s event and spend the entire weekend. Having attended 4 other Expo’s I can honestly say I am never ceased to be amazed. Each year the event has grown, which is a wonderful thing to see. More and more sponsors are getting involved. Each time I go I have the ability to chat with most of the vendors. I have had the honor of chatting with individuals that I never expected to meet. Never once have I been pushed through a line for someone to chat to the next person, each of us have waited for our chance to chat and given as much time as desired. What amazes me is that as full as the building can be at times with spectators, everyone is curtous of one another. There is always amazing food, good music and plenty of items for purchase. This year we even found a corner next to the radio station’s booth to have a picnic, what fun! People of all ages attend the event each year, and as per Tom’s personality, the children are as welcome as their parents and grandparents. Most vendors have a little something to give to each child to make them feel important. I thank all of you that are a part of this marvolas event! You are the reason we keep coming back! A car without headlights? A car with oil burning lanterns?

In the days of old there were horse drawn carriges with only candle light and oil lamps. In the 1880’s the first automobile was built without any lighting, so they didn’t drive when the sun went down. We estimate that kerosene headlamps were used until 1900, then acetylene headlamps were used from 1900 – 1910. Early electric lighting was generated by a small dynamo very much as on a current day bicycle. In 1908 the first automobile headlamps appeared. Using a carbon filament element, and a vacuum, yet were not filled with gas. Not a very efficient or longlasting lamp. Electric headlamps using these bulbs and a battery were installed as optional equipment on vehicles. In 1911 the first electric headlamps were installed as standard equipment on passenger cars. In 1912 the first vehicle wide wire harness, electric starter, and electrical system was installed in vehicles. This allowed an increased use of electric light sources and increased the installation of electric lights on cars. By the late 1930’s people were so disappointed with the conditions of headlights that something new was needed. Hence, headlamps had silver metal reflectors that had to be polished. However, the bulb bases were not the same in all headlamps, and there was no common way to aim the headlamps. The glass sealed headlamp were soon patented and became the answer to most of the above problems. The sealed beam consisted of two pieces of glass, a lens with optics, a parabolic aluminized reflector, and tungsten filaments supported by metal lead wires. Between 1940 – 1941, all U.S. car production switched to one common 7” size round with two headlamps per vehicle. During the 1961 – 1970 periods advancement in the headlamp was developed with the halogen bulb. Halogen gas was inserted into the bulb allowing the bulb to burn hotter and brighter without shortening the bulbs life. Halogen bulbs were not installed in U.S. sealed beam lights until the 1970’s. From 1971 – 1980 two headlight sizes were used 7 inch round, 2 lamps per vehicle and 5 ¾ inch 4 lamp per vehicle. In 1974 a new 4 headlamp configuration was approved. Most headlamps in the world were using glass lens up until this time. With the use of halogen light sources, the use of the hermetic seal provided by the all glass sealed beam was not needed. In 14 www.americanmotorheadmagazine.org April2013 Issue.indd 14

halogen lamps the tungsten filaments were contained in a gas filled inner bulb. Adhesive bonded, all glass sealed beams were manufactured along with sealed beams with plastic lenses and reflectors. Materials and coatings were developed to provide good abrasion resistance, and the plastic materials increased the impact resistance to stone breakage. The first replaceable bulb headlamp in the U.S. was in the 1984 model year. Within a few year the majority of U.S. Automobiles were designed with the new style halogen headlamps. HID (high intensity discharge) Lighting was first installed on U.S. vehicles in 1991. In relation to tungsten and halogen lights, HID headlight systems provided longer life, increased brightness, increased color temperature of the light source, and greater durability. All these advantages were available at a somewhat higher cost. From candles to high intensity discharge, there have been tremendous changes in less than a hundred years in the light sources for automobiles. Materials for headlamps metal and glass for the most of that time, have given way to high temperature plastics. Headlamp designs are now integrated into the vehicle styled surfaces, whereas a hundred years ago headlamps were added on the outer metal structure and looked every bit like an ugly wart. Will there be more changes and improvements? Absolutely! Light sources for vehicles will continue to change. Materials will improve and we are sure to see many more advancements in vehicle lighting. John S. Olsen February 1953 - April 2012

A Man With A Vision John was the man with the vision of American Motorhead Magazine. He attended cruise ins and shows throughout Central Illinois with his children. Having veiwed so many beautiful vehicles, his dream was to create something that gave back to those of you that worked so hard to make your rides artwork on wheels. The need to share was planted in his heart. Hence American Motorhead Magazine was born. Over the years of print only this issue and one other was not completed with his input on every detail. The first missed issue, he was in the hospital very ill. It is only fitting that American Motorhead Magazine’s first issue back honor this man. John loved going to the shows/ cruise ins to see all of the rides and discuss changes you had done or planned to do to your special treasures. Most of all he enjoyed sitting getting to know the people hehind the ride. Above are a few of those magic moments shared with you, who made his vision worth pursuing. 16 www.americanmotorheadmagazine.org April2013 Issue.indd 16

Over the years John had owned many different rides, his pride and joy being his brown 1980 Chevy Corvette. It has now been passed on to his youngest son Michael. Currently his pride and joy ride, resides in the same place where he last viewed it, his garage, safe and sound. Each one of his children can remember moments spent in, around, and under a vehicle with him. His vet awaits the moments when his children sit together, rolling down the highway feeling the presence of their dad saying, “Crank those tunes and move on down the road. John, you are missed deeply. As per your request, American Motorhead Magazine will move forward with the blessing you bestowed upon us, but know you are still within our hearts and the pages of this magazine. John’s Family

Hello, my name is Melissa. I was John’s eldest daughter. I wanted to say a few words about the first man I loved with all my heart. I was always a daddy’s girl. My dad was my hero, my sounding board, my rock. He was always there when I needed him whether it be physically, emotionally, or spiritually. His kind, loving heart saw no limits. He gave all he had and fought for me on so many occasions. He showed how much he loved me with his words, actions, and many lectures when I had done something wrong. Despite my terrible teens, my dad never once gave up on me. He continued to love, support, and guide me. Our years together had many ups and downs but those years were also filled with countless hours of laughter, gallons upon gallons of tears, millions of butterfly kisses, endless rides in the corvette, hundreds of tacos, a zillion late nights, and more bear hugs than I can count. I only wish he was still here to give me one last bear hug. Dear Daddy, I love you and miss you so much. I wanted to say thank you for all the wonderful advice, even if I didn’t listen at the time. Now as an adult, I can see the wisdom in your words and hope to be able to share that wisdom with your grandson. I pray for the ability to be as good a parent as you were to me. I only wish you were here with me to watch him grow, although I have a sneaking suspicion that you are watching him. He is always saying Pawpaw and pointing to your picture and looking at the books you gave us both. Your love is unending. I can feel it with me every day. I only wish I could still seek the safety of your hugs when the world starts closing in on me. However, you taught me to be a strong, compassionate, God-fearing woman and because of that, I will do my best to make you proud of me. Until we meet again, I’m sending you butterfly kisses. Your little girl, Melissa American Motorhead Magazine April2013 Issue.indd 17

"Rest In Peace Father" Dennis M. Ruttle

Sadly on Friday Feb. 15th Dennis M. Ruttle 69, of Washington, Il died at his home after a valiant fight against his brain tumor. Most of us who knew Denny called him "Father" because of his vast knowledge and willingness to help anybody. He was a retired Cat engineer at the Mossville Tech Center as a senior test specialist in fuel systems. He was one of the best machinists that I have ever met! If you have ever attended any local street rod meets or car shows, you would have seen him with one of his several cars, trucks or boats. He excelled in problem diagnosing and repairs, and "saved my bacon" countless times. Over the years our shop painted several of his projects, which we called "Fathers Jewelry" because of the meticulous building talent he possessed. God love you Father, you will be missed. Ozone & Co.

Noah Eisenhower 7- Years Old From- Freeport, IL You are an amazing kid! We are proud to have gotten to know you.

The Future of NASCAR When American Motorhead Magazine recently traveled to St. Charles, Illinois for the Annual Race Performance Expo, we were exposed to a form of racing that we had never heard of before, The Super Cup Racers. The cars and drivers are similar but very different. The cars are very close to being 1/2 scale exact replicas of the full size NASCAR cars. They sport a tubular chassis and coil over shocks, GS390 Honda Engine topping out at 21 HP. Whith these cars safety is paramount and there are special seats made for the driver, with full race harnesses just like in the larger racecars. We would like to take this oppurtunity to introduce the lad we met in St. Charles, whom taught us a little about Super Cup Racing. Noah Eisenhower, from Freeport, Illinois he is currently 7 years old. Noah began is racing career at the ripe age of four, yes folks I said FOUR!!!! At four years old Noah raced Kids Carts. He has also raced Mini Dragsters and Cage Karts. Noah usually races on either a half mile or quarter mile track. On the half mile he hits speeds of up to 100 MPH! Then on the quarter mile he slows it down a bit only reaching about 50 MPH. (His family must have nerves of steel!)

20 www.americanmotorheadmagazine.org April2013 Issue.indd 20

American Motorhead Magazine 3/22/2013 2:47:12 AM

Noah’s car includes, Hoosier spec racing tires, tube chassis, adjustable suspension, coil-over shocks, disc brakes, rack and ;inion steering, and a sealed Honda engine. Noah can be seen racing in several different states throughout the Central area. He will be racing for the Central States Region Cup this year. Which covers, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. In addition to this cup Noah will compete for the Rookie of the Year Award. So far to date Noah has brought home 35 racing wins, 2 track championships, and sat in Victory Lane 9 times. He is a very busy young man, last year attending 20 race weekends, 2 car shows, 3 sponsor appearances and 2 parades. We are just hoping this year maybe he could sneak away to attend one of our events! It would be a pleasure seeing him again and hearing about his adventures. Over the years we have had the privilege of talking to several professional racers. But Noah by far you are an inspiration to us all. A kind, courteous and very informative individual. This young man has a very bright future and dreams of someday running the NASCAR Truck Series. Which we are sure will indeed occur. Noah thank you for sharing your sport with us!

LADIES TOUCH Camee Edelbrock was born into a legacy. Being the granddaughter of the late Vic Edelbrock Senior and daughter of Vic Edelbrock Junior there was no doubt that she would continue with the family business. Camee first worked at Edelbrock as a teenager during her summer vacations. Then when she graduated from University of Southern California in 1982 Camee accepted a position enthusiastically in sales. It wasn’t that long and Camee was offered a position in advertising, which she accepted. Camee liked the idea that there wasn’t that much tools to use like we do today and it would utilized her creativity. In 1987 Camee had her precious daughter and initially wanted to be a stay at home mother. After having a talk with her dad she changed her mind and went back to Edelbrock. In 2008 she accepted a position as Public Relations manager at Schiefer Media Inc. and is still there today. Camee always had a love of fast vehicles; she started with water ski racing in 1978 after retiring from horse shows. Camee skied mostly 50 and 75 mile marathons with partner Jim Cook. Then shortly before Camee got pregnant with her daughter she switched to driving in the speed boat races. She drove in a marathon in San Francisco Bay but did not finish due to mechanical failure. After her daughter was born, she raced one the team’s last marathon races and was able to pass beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and finish. After watching her dad race cars for many years she wanted in on the action. Camee went to Bondurant’s driving school and then started Vintage Car Racing. At first she was the only women in the B-production class. By the 90’s she was an experienced racer, and was there to give advice to her sister Christi Edelbrock when she started racing. By 2002 she was racing two different cars. Camee is a remarkable woman and in 2008 when she was given the chance to expand her horizon with her talent and love she did it with Schiefer Media. Camee has her hands in logo design, radio script writing and production, editorial and promotions, concept development and implementing projects. These are just a few she has her ladies touch in. We look forward to seeing and hearing about more of her accomplishments and keeping us gearheads looking to the future.

Ralph “Butch” Koonce and his ‘72 Chevy Chevelle

This is the smiling face of a man that not only loved his ride, but loved being involved in the sport of crusin’. “Butch” spent many an hour sitting with his best friend “brother” Carlie Franklin, cars parked side by side, with them in between them. Both cars painted by the very artistic hands of those at Dave’s Autobody in East Peoria. Motorhead remembers the kind heart, and fun sense of humor Butch possessed. We just recently heard of his passing. Butch, you will be deeply missed by all of us that knew and loved you.

Derrick Johnson’s

This VW came to me when I was checking out a website on Volksrods and seen a rendering done by Hugo Silva. I contacted Hugo and asked him if I could have the rights to his artwork and if I could build his car that he designed. He told me he did the rendering 3 years ago but was told that it couldnt be built. I told him I was going to build it. I found a 1962 VW body on Craigslist in Pekin,IL for free. I went and looked at it and it was the most rusty VW I have ever seen and it was just a body,no pan,no doors, windows, hood or deck lid. I took it home. This was in November 2011. December 2011 I get a email from the director of Hot Rod Industry Alliance(SEMA) abd they wanted us to bring one of our cars. I sent him a picture of the 1971 Cuda, the High Life Falcon and the rendering of Das Speedster. They choose High Life and the rendering. I thought,Crap how am I going to build this car in time for the HotRod and Restoration show in Indy. The date for the HR&R show was Mar22,2012 and this was the end of December. We knuckled down and built it in 73 days thanks to freinds and family. Every weekend there was a crew of 7 to 10 people working on Das and during the week it was me,my Dad and Buddy Liggett plugging away. We made it to the show with a day to spare.

What is that smell??? The best thing in any gear heads life is to search and search to find the perfect car. You may find your dream car by driving down a street you have never been down before and it is fate and you see it and you stop to look and drool. Or you might be methodical and look on Craigslist or local listings and it jumps out at you with perfect timing for the perfect car.

When you think you have succeeded you find when you turn on the heat or air conditioning you get assaulted with the stench again. Getting the smell out of this area is the most difficult; however, there is a solution. It is very expensive to remove and clean the duct system but below there are details on a low cost way to clean the ducts.

But all hopes and excitement is bashed because you open the car door and your first impression is tainted with the strong and undeniable stench of cigarette smoke. You wonder why anyone would tarnish this beautiful car. But don’t fret there are some options that can help eliminate the stench.

The Duct System Now you are ready to tackle the air duct system and completely remove the smoke from it. Get a good bottle of odor neutralizer. You want to park your car in a well-ventilated area. If the weather is nice then park it outside. Make sure the parking brake is set and start the engine up. You want the fan and the air conditioner to be on full blast. Do not have the air recirculate but make sure you have the fresh air on.

• First and foremost clean the car, cigarette odor is attached to the physical artifacts left behind. Use hose attachments that are intended for cleaning upholstery. • Sprinkle baking soda over your vehicle's carpeted and upholstered interior, and even on the dash and other surfaces. Let it sit for a half hour or more before vacuuming these surfaces. • Clean all the interior windows with glass cleaner. Spray the cleaner on the windows and use paper towels or soft towels to wipe off the cleaner. You might notice that the towels turn black from the removal of the deposited smoke on the windows. • Use white vinegar. A bowl left in the car overnight can help the smell a great deal. • Use citrus peels. Toss a few peels in various places inside the car. This method takes several days, but the magic of orange peels in particular cannot be overstated. • You can use coffee, put the grounds in filters and secure them so they won’t dump the grounds directly onto the upholstery. Place the filters on the most offending areas. • Use charcoal. Similar to the vinegar method, leave a bowl of charcoal in the car overnight. • Pay attention to the lights. Interior lights attract smoke, which means they’ll be centers for cigarette smell. Scrub these areas with the most powerful cleaner you have. Even bring in a hydrogen peroxide mix here if necessary.

American Motorhead Magazine April2013 Issue.indd 27

The Air Intake You want to look over at the front fender near the passenger side and find the air intake for the air conditioning and heater. Most of the time this is found just under the windshield, although it can be found in a different place depending on your car. You want to spray the deodorizer directly on the intake screen so it goes into the system. Go into the car to make sure it is getting into the system. The deodorizer will get the smoke out of the blower, evaporator, and the air ducts, all the places that smoke will stick. Clean the Heater Now you want to set the heater onto full heat. Keep spraying the deodorizer into the same air intake until you don’t smell anymore smoke odor. With the heater on, the deodorizer will clean the ducts, blower, and heating core. If you find that this still does not remove the smoke, then you want to give your car an ozone shock treatment. This will kill any bacteria that will hold onto the smoke odors and denature any odor compounds so they are no longer smelly. So once you get the smell out, get your car ready, we want to see your car at the shows and we want to know the method you used. Article by: Jami Morris
