EXPERIENCE WITH BRANDS ANSWERING THE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA > Demonstrated ability to set directions and priorities for corporate positioning

Created, implemented and developed Corporate Identity Guidelines: • The new Corporate Identity Guidelines for the City of Ryde A major achievement in my role as Coordinator Publications and Branding at the City of Ryde has been to implement a new corporate identity for the City. Including the branding of the website, uniforms for front-line staff, advertising, office documentation, advertising, publications, and signage. Throughout the roll-out of the new branding I have provided graphic design services, advice and direction for implementation and example templates, to assist staff to build our new brand devised from the Ryde 2021 and to strengthen the position of the City of Ryde to be the place for lifestyle and opportunity @ your doorstep.

• Corporate Identity Guidelines - A Style Manual for Hornsby Shire Council As Senior Graphic Designer at Hornsby Shire Council a highlight was to create the Corporate Identity Guidelines - A Style Manual for Hornsby Shire Council, which included brand management, successful case studies, advertising guidelines and the Shire’s written style. This has become an essential resource for internal staff to adhere to, and for external suppliers to comply with. It has strengthened the presence, and maintained consistency of the Council image which has built brand awareness in the community.

• Created a new identity for The Sydney Underground Film Festival I played a key role in developing the brand of the Sydney Underground Film Festival from its conception in 2007, including their logo and iconic ‘face’. This has been applied to all film programs, website, and merchandising, building their brand recognition with consistency for the past five years.

Brands I have worked for: Throughout my career I have worked for companies with brand guidelines and visual identities already established. Worldwide brands with strict brand guidelines that I have worked with include: • Reebok • Rockport • Ben Sherman. Australia-wide companies I have worked for with specific branding include: • Australand • The Strathfield Group • Downtown DutyFree.

SERVICING THE CUSTOMER ANSWERING THE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA > Demonstrated ability to understand the functions of an organisation and influence them to align to corporate standards of service quality As a graphic designer and as a member of Community Relations in local government, I have always worked in the service industry. I have an extensive list of customers (clients) for the services I provide. The success of this service can be attributed to: • Listening to the customer • Building the relationship • Providing customer satisfaction • Adhering to standards and beliefs • Measuring success • Identifying opportunities to improve the service • Implementing more effective operations Some of the ways I have built upon this is by joining the Customer Service Group - much like the recommended committee for Communications at the City of Ryde I predict this will be a successful endeavour like this group was for Hornsby Shire Council.

Member of the Customer Service Group As a member of the Customer Service Group (a selection of staff from every division across Hornsby Shire Council) the following was achieved: • • • • •

Developed customer service across all divisions Resolved issues raised in the service of our customers Identified opportunities for customer service improvement Measured customer service Rewarded customer service champions

Within this group I played a key role in building the standard of customer service, including: • Updating the Customer Service Charter • Implementing an automated phone-system to disperse customers to the correct department • Establishing branded email signatures of more than 300 staff • Engaging the community to provide feedback utilising technology of handheld voting systems • Overhauling 135 forms into a forms register for customers and maintaining best practice of document management • Redeveloping and revamping the ‘Our Chat’ internal staff newsletter into an attractive and readable publication that highlighted new customer service programs, operations and the customer service ‘Star of the Month’.

> Demonstrated ability to resolve external customer enquiries and problems I have the motto ‘The buck stops here’ in this regard. An external enquiry or problem should be solved by the first point of call. We are all service providers in government. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll be the one to find out and pass this knowledge on. I’ll instill this belief in all.

> Demonstrated ability to influence service improvement through the measurement of internal and external customer service I am no expert in the process for filling in forms, particularly Development Applications, but had to learn quickly. As Project Manager for the Smart Forms Project I had to improve the customer service experience and assist in creating ways to reduce the time taken to process forms. An intimate knowledge has been gained through this experience to help influence the service improvement for our customers. Now using this new smartform technology launched this month we will be able to measure its success or areas for improvement.

UTILISING SOCIAL MEDIA ANSWERING THE ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS CRITERIA > Knowledge of social media and its applications to the corporate world Through the process of research, testing user environments, previous corporate and personal experience, monitoring and measuring applications, and utilising social media resources and tools I have gained expertise in this field. Some of these include:

Creating real-time communications • twitter.com/HornsbyCouncil During my time at Hornsby Shire Council, the Community Relations team endeavoured to utilise twitter for council communications. As a member of the team we set the guidelines and objective to: • Inform the community and media - news and events • Alert the community - Retweet F3 road closures, or bushfire warnings • Build online identity

Sharing and engaging through blogs

Using online social media tools Since starting at the City of Ryde 11 months ago I have created accounts with online web resources, including:

• bitly.com/rydeart Tweeting requires a message with less than 140 characters, and media space can come at a cost, so the online resource of shortened urls was required. Instead of using http://www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/Community/ Arts+and+Culture/Artist+Register, type into your web browser this easy to remember address bitly.com/rydeart and it will display the same page.

• QR Codes Do you have a smartphone? Do you like catching the free Top Ryder bus provided by the City of Ryde? I have utilised the free QR code service and printed this on every sign on the bus stops so commuters can scan the bus timetable straight to their phone

• issuu.com/ab_typeryde A successful online publication utilising social media for the City of Ryde is the first issue of typeryde youthzine. A great return on investment. For $1,000 grant from the City of Ryde to the Ryde Youth Council we can see measurable success for the newly created venture to connect with the youth of the City.

• officerofdesign.blogspot.com.au After finding a need to share information in the corporate world with a team that could become a reusable resource, I created a blog. My purpose was to: • Share creative ideas • Engage conversation • Provide inspiration • Identify developments and successes in our relevant fields of design, brand management, government, public relations, media, marketing, events and web design • Reduce the strain on email communications

Using online promotions • theloop.com.au/lizberger Are you in the loop? In the field of graphic design and marketing, an online portfolio is best to display your work. Feel free to visit the above address to view some of my work.

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it, if you can’t manage it, you can’t identify improvements or success.’ The best thing about how we operate today is everything is measurable, everything is recorded in some form of technology, from the types of payments we receive, to how many people visited our website, furthermore if we specifically ask a direct question of our customers we can analyse these results and empower our staff and Councillors to make confident and informed decisions”

DATA YIELDS RESULTS

ANSWERING THE ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS CRITERIA > Demonstrated ability to devise and manage market research projects and analyse the results

The majority of research can be obtained if you know what to look for by harnessing the data and interpreting how we operate as an organisation, like the number of customer requests and resolutions. If you are after more targeted results you have to structure your market research project. Below is examples of experience in the area.

Market research makes marketing more effective During my time at Hornsby Shire Council, I worked closely with the Web Services Coordinator and Media Coordinator to cut costs in communications and test the market for new effective marketing opportunities. The Bushland Shire News Council 12 page newsletter is distributed to 56,000 households four times a year at a cost of $80,000 annually and we felt it was time to encourage the residents to join us online and reduce operational costs. It was an effective publication - a 2009 telephone survey of 500 residents found that 74% of the population were aware of the newsletter. In 2010, we conducted an online survey of which 80 residents completed and the vast majority indicated they enjoyed the content. The objective was to maintain the structure of the newsletter and convert it into a monthly enewsletter. We chose an Australian company Campaign Monitor to distribute it because of its analytics it provided ( See figure below). The Bushland Shire eNews is now distributed regularly whilst monitoring sign-ups and cancelled subscriptions on the database and the most popular stories due to click-throughs on the email. It is now easier to identify the news and events the residents wish to know about and has reduced the bottom-line. N High five : Award nomination for Reporting to your Community RH Dougherty Award

Analysing what we do One our most effective mediums of communication at the City of Ryde is our website www.ryde.nsw.gov.au, I know this because we use Google Analytics. We have more than half a million visitors each year. The software also provides us with the most popular pages. The library, RALC and sportsground updates prove to always be in the top five, so keeping content up-to-date here is key. I use these statistics regularly to enable me to set priorities and identify areas for effective use of our website. I can see these results in practice, for example visit www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/lizberger and using Google Analytics I can provide a report on how many of my target audience has viewed this page.

Using survey results A major part of the Hornsby Shire Council submission to IPART for a rates increase included market research so that an informed decision on the spend allocation of the proposed increase could be received. Surveying the community was a key tool to measure the communities wants, needs, and willingness to accept, and set the price of the rates increase. Survey Monkey, (exactly like ‘Boomerang’ software we use at the City) an online survey software was used to obtain 521 residents feedback, along with 307 residents using hand-held survey technology. This helped to design the campaign to apply for a rates increase which resulted in a successful outcome for Council in 2011.

COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY

ANSWERING THE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA > Demonstrated ability to identify stakeholders priorities and devise appropriate communications plans Every project or request that comes across my desk has left with a well-conceived communications plan, including timelines, budgets, restraints, resources and the appropriate mediums. An example of this resulted in a Highly Commended Award for Excellence in Communication. It was the:

Hornsby Shire Housing Strategy I was integral to the development and ongoing assistance to the consultation process for the Hornsby Shire Housing Strategy. The aim was to ensure residents were fully informed about the purpose, contents and implications of the Housing Strategy. It was essential that the community was provided with all the relevant facts to facilitate robust feedback and debate about the merits of the Housing Strategy. The knowledge and assistance I provided was to brand all the documentation and marketing collateral with consistency to ensure those affected by the proposed Housing Strategy would readily identify the communications as : 1) A Council communication 2) Communications belonging to the Housing Strategy.

I also advised as many mediums as possible and helped to structure the message for maximum reach and utilise effective communications for the consultation period. These included: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Volumes 1 and 2 of the Housing Strategy Advertorials in local media Branded Press Releases Advertisements in local newspapers Bushland Shire News articles Direct mail campaign of letters and information Kits (CD-ROM) to affected owners Letters & Information Sheets to owners in the vicinity Letters to community and industry groups, state and federal MPs Displays at the Administration Building and libraries Signage at the Community Drop-In Sessions Branding for Bang the Table online forum Web advertising

EXCELLENT PUBLICATIONS ANSWERING THE CRITERIA > Creative flare in design and communications It could be said, that my strength in communications lie within this field. This is true because of the years of experience gained in my role as Graphic Designer for local government, the retail industry and the film industry. My most recent example is the City of Ryde Business Model.

View the City of Ryde Business Model at infonet.com

City of Ryde Business Model From the introduction of the initial concept at our end of year celebrations at the City of Ryde Christmas party through to the completion of an online publication, a resource for the City of Ryde staff - the City of Ryde Business Model has ‘taken flight’. A well-conceived document lay the foundations for interpreting a symbolic representation of the operations and ideals for effective business. As a result of working with the General Manager’s Division, I have created an effective reference tool for the City of Ryde staff that has been well-received and complimented on for its readability and usefulness.

B A-ok : Excel in this area

A Snapshot of Hornsby Shire Another well-received council publication was the Snapshot of Hornsby Shire. The aim was to provide a snapshot of the quality of life and wellbeing of the Hornsby Shire in 2010. The objective of the publication was to demonstrate ‘where we are now’ so it could become a reference to ‘how far we have come’. The Shire’s key strategic themes of economy, ecology, human habitat, society and culture and governance are used as a baseline for indicators that can be measured against in the future. The success of this document was attributed to the interpretation of the data and the many mediums I converted the document for maximum audience reach.

N High five : Nominated for Reporting to your Community RH Dougherty Award Other publications of note include the quarterly Council Newsletter the Bushland Shire News, which was also nominated for the RH Dougherty Award for Reporting to your Community, three annual reports for the Hornsby Shire and the Festival Program for the last five years of the Sydney Underground Film Festival.

1/2 MILLION LOOK TO OUR WEBSITE ANSWERING THE CRITERIA > Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly online, and to manage and develop our website In a constant changing environment of communications you need to adopt new technologies. I began purely in print but have now evolved my skillset over the past 14 years to include online communications. Everything I create, design, construct or write for print is always converted into a usable format online. Sensitivity to how people read publications online or how they are exposed to your brand are vital even the simple and effective way you name a file ensures search engines find your document therefore increasing the chances of a successful ‘hit’ for our customers. Half a million people each year is a valuable audience, therefore close working relationships with the web and media teams within the City of Ryde and the Hornsby Shire Council has ensured I maximise the use of this successful medium for local government.

Council website development and tender Joining the Website Advisory Committee as part of the redevelopment of Hornsby Shire Council Website and CMS Supplier Tender process enabled me to identify the needs and best practice for a council website. Through this process I gained a sound knowledge of: • Usable interfaces for Content Management Systems • Effective navigation structures for websites • Creative technologies for engagement

B A-ok : Excel in this area

In recent years, I have also increased my knowledge of the web by completing a web page course at the Northern Institute of Tafe and gained technical experience in the use of the squiz.net Matrix Content Management System through an exam and practical experience.

SUCCESSFUL ENGAGEMENT ANSWERING THE CRITERIA > Demonstrated ability to communicate with the community and influence community opinion An example of communicating and engaging with the community was the two year campaign for a rates increase for Hornsby Shire Council.

The community accepts the rate increase From the outset, the Community Relations team was involved with working alongside the Strategy team to: • Inform the community • Promote the benefits of a rates increase • Engage the community to gain insight into where the money should be allocated The communications that I was involved in to help brand and structure the message included: • Dedicated website, in which I design and constructed it, then liaised with external developers to build it • Rates notices • Advertisements • Surveys, online and inperson • ‘Bang the Table’ online forum • Council columns • Publications and factsheets • Community feedback sessions. The success of the approved rates increase from IPART could be attributed to this complete engagement approach from the residents and community.
