... for your pets In the rush to decorate, shop, wrap, bake cookies, stuff stockings and hit all the holiday events, it’s easy to overlook our family pets. “With all sorts of new foods and strangers and unfamiliar decorations, the holidays can be stressful and even dangerous for pets,” said Dr. Kathy Johnson of Yorba Regional Animal Hospital. Here’s how to keep them safe. • Make sure pets always have a place that’s warm and dry, especially short-haired animals. • If you’re going away for a few days, line up someone to check on your pet. • Anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn’t tip and fall, and don’t let your pets drink the water. It might contain fertilizer, bacteria and other potential tummy troubles. • Holly, mistletoe, poinsettia and many kinds of lilies are poisonous for pets. • Kittens love to play with sparkly tinsel, and may be tempted to nibble and swallow, causing a blockage. • Likewise, keep wires, batteries, and glass or plastic ornaments out of reach. Dogs often mistake them for balls. • Never leave lit candles unsupervised; pets can easily burn themselves or knock them over. Try flameless LEDs instead. • Never give pets chocolate and make sure they don’t overdo it with treats, table scraps and bones. • Don’t let dogs dip into the punch bowl. Alcohol can cause serious, even fatal, illness. • During parties, let your pets relax in a room to themselves, with water and a cozy blanket. • Don’t leave milk and cookies for Santa where your pets can get to them first; they cause tummy troubles. • On New Year’s Eve, avoid noisy poppers and firecrackers, which will spook pets.
