Join Us: From Liz: Holy cow...who knew there is such a thing as foot golf? It’s played on a golf course with a dinosaursized hole and soccer ball (easier, takes less time to play and way more fun than…golf!). This is what gets us going over here. We find something, like a curling club for kids, and nerd out over it. When an outside-the-box activity or resource comes across our desk, we can’t get enough of it—we blog, we post, we print, we gloat.

If you would like to advertise in Kidsguide, give us a call at (562) 799-0140. We would be happy to send you our rates. The deadline to advertise in our HolidayGuide e-zine, is November 1 and our Spring/ Summer issue, February 15.

Don’t get us wrong, we have nothing against baseball, basketball and (flag) football, but us Kidsguiders are all about opening up different parts of the world to kids….thus Offbeat Sports, our feature article (pages 3-4) filled with activities that are a little “different” to try. Who knows, your kids might get hooked on one of them. Best part about any sport (even for non-sporters): there’s a huge variety to choose from, they encourage teamwork and self-discipline, develop fitness, and offer a mental break from the books, a healthy dose of vitamin D and zero screen time. Score!

Heads Up: This is the second issue where we have moved our ridiculously extensive events calendar online (it’s what we are known for). On any given month, we have at least 500+ local events to choose from. You can save them to your personal calendar, share them with friends, and easily access them from your phone. We’re updating and adding activities daily. Take a look at kidsguidemagazine.com. While you’re there (if you haven’t already), sign up for The Buzzz. It’s a parenting game changer loaded with giveaways, tips, outing ideas and lots more. Now...take your little bulls by the horns, get out there...and start mooving :-)

Feature Article

Looking for some cool, out-of-the-ordinary ways to get your kids involved in sports? If you’ve got a kid, we’ve got you covered. This issue is chock-full of fun, offbeat and occasionally kinda silly sports (we’re talking about you, broomball) to help your kids learn teamwork, find new friends and keep fit. And if somewhere in there, they end up getting a college scholarship, well, that’d be pretty great too. We’ll get you started here but check out the SportsGuide (pages 35-42) for even MORE ideas and info!

Let It Roll Sports on wheels seems to appeal to a certain kind of kid—one who is brave, of course, but also has a certain swagger. Here are some ways to get your cool kid up and rolling … Roller Derby “All you need to get started is curiosity and a mouth guard,” according to the Junior Derby Dolls. For some of us parents, an “entire body guard” would be nice as well but if your kid’s got that hardcore roller derby attitude (the entry level classes are called “fresh meat”), the fast-paced sport teaches teamwork, strategy and assertiveness. Plus, you get to adopt a cool derby pseudonym (Little Grrr Maid)! SharkBites Beach Cities Junior Derby has classes for Mini Bites (8-10) and Shark Bites (1117), www.beachcitiesrollerderby.com. The Los Angeles Junior Derby Dolls teaches girls (7-17); the first class is free and all skill levels are welcome, www.derbydolls.com/junior-derby-dolls. Skateboarding Give your kids instant playground cred with some solid skateboarding skillz. Skateboarding is great for teaching precision, balance and bravery as well as how to fall correctly (really!). The sport is also stellar for teaching persistence—you will never see a more determined kid than a skater learning a new trick. Before they brave it out on the wilds of a local skatepark, they might want to try the Skatedogs after-school program. Skatedogs tricks out SoCal school playgrounds (non-students are welcome) with rails, half pipe and launch ramps for an instant skatepark. They also offer private or

group lessons and birthday party packages. (714) 313-8787, www.skatedogs.com.

Just Add Water Here in SoCal, we rule the pool in producing champs. Of course, there are swim teams galore (see Water Sports on page 36), but there are plenty of other great choices for kids who like to get wet. Whatever you pick, you’re guaranteed some very tired (and extra clean!) kiddos. Synchronized Swimming How do synchronized swimmers get synced in the first place? They do not emerge out of the sea like a line of perfectly choreographed Ariels. A lot started out right here in local classes and teams. Synchro, as the pros call it, is great for a kid who can’t decide between swimming, dance and gymnastics—it’s very graceful and physical—plus there are fancy costumes and a group of friends right there in the water with you. Try The Meraquas of Irvine for classes, www.meraquas.org, or flip to page 36 for more info.

Water Polo Water polo players gain exceptional endurance and swimming skills (eggbeaters are hardcore, people!). Kids as young as five can hop on a noodle and start practicing those eggbeaters in the coed Mini-Polo program at United Water Polo in Los Alamitos. (www. unitedwaterpoloclub.org). “He’s so confident and sure about the water,” says Joy Baker whose 13 year-old son Kai, a mini-polo graduate and Huntington Beach Jr. Lifeguard, still plays, though now sans noodle. The Irvine-based USA Water Polo (www.usawaterpolo.org) has spawned many Olympiads. Check out their site for information on clubs, clinics, camps and tournaments for boys and girls (7+) or see page 36. Diving Diving combines gymnastics, acrobatics and the sheer courage that is hurling oneself into the water below. Locally, we have training for beginners all the way up to Junior Olympiads. If your kid is not quite ready to take the full leap, they can try a minisession at McCormick Divers in Long Beach, (714) 642-0317, www.McCormickDivers.com. A regular diving practice is good discipline too—95% of divers at McCormick Divers make the transition to college. Jr. Crew Crew is about commitment, building strength, and working together to meet a common goal—that is, row, row, rowing that boat. The sport is not only great for fitness, it’s THE number one bet for a girl to score an athletic college scholarship. Newport Aquatic Center starts ‘em early with junior rowing and teams for middle and high schoolers. (949) 646-7725, www.newportaquaticcenter.com. Long Beach Junior Crew offers a winter-break camp for kids 12-18, along with a year-round program and teams. (562) 431-1644. www.longbeachjuniorcrew.org.

Chill Out We’ve got plenty in the way of skating, (see page 40), but hold your Zamboni, there’s more! We’re talking: Broomball Expect some bruises after a game of Broomball, a hockeyish game where you wear tennis shoes and play with a broom/mallety thing. Oh, and it’s super slippery and there are no rules, really. “It’s like the wild, wild west on ice,” says Miriam Bradley of East West Ice Palace. As is the way of Broomball, there aren’t youth leagues (yet....though it might not look bad on a college app if your kid was the local Broomball Czar...). So grab a few friends (like party guests), rent a rink, and East West Ice Palace will provide nets, balls and sticks. www.eastwesticepalace. com, (562) 809-6200. It’s also available at many local rinks, including The Rinks with various locations, www.therinks.com. See pages 40 and 41. Hockey Hockey is good for building teamwork, endurance and the kind of excellent balance that comes from a fast-paced game played entirely on a slab of ice. Here in SoCal, we are as rich as the Canadians (almost) in youth teams and leagues as well as gateway opportunities for newbies. The Anaheim Ducks 4-week Learn-to-Play Program offers firsttime hockey players the chance to get on the rink in full hockey equipment for free. Kids get instruction on the basics of hockey basics as well as the correct way to skate. Sessions at The Rinks, various locations, www.therinks.com. If you have already tried hockey, you might be eligible for the Little Ducks Hockey Program, a developmental hockey program for kids 4-12 that provides participants with a free set of hockey equipment, as well as on-ice instruction. www.tinyurl.com/ DucksYouthHockey

4 kidsguide fall/winter 2019/20

Curling Yes, curling (!), that Olympic sport with the big round stone and the frantic sweeping. Curling is a social sport that’s also good for agility and lack of sweatiness (all that ice!). “Our club offers Learnto-Curl classes and curling leagues throughout the year to youth ages 14 years and older,” says Kori Fisher, VP of the OC Curling Club, although they don’t yet have classes for the very young. Folks with physical limitations can play too. The classes are wheelchair accessible and kids with physical differences can use the alternate “stick” method of stone delivery. www.occurling.com, (714) 987-CURL. If it takes, you might find yourself at a bonspiel or two (psst, it’s a curling tournament), or renting your own curling setup (great for parties) through Emerald Events, page 40.

Badminton In the 1600s, upper-class folks played an early, netless form of the game called battledore and shuttlecock where players just hit a shuttlecock back and forth trying not to let it touch the ground. Nowadays, we play a modern version with a net and everything that originated in 19th century British India. Badminton’s benefits include: fun, cardiovascular health and inexpensive equipment, plus in some local schools being on the school’s badminton team allows a PE-averse kid to avoid high school gym class. To get in the swing of things, kids can start in with lessons at a local club, including Badminton Center Court, (562) 426-9299, www.badmintoncentercourt.com and Orange County Badminton Club, (714) 639-6222, www.ocbadmintonclub.com.

Go Medieval

The Odd Balls

If a sport has been around since the olden days— as in Medieval times—it’s gotta have something going for it. (Alas ye olde pastimes like Shinty, Bear Baiting and Hot Cockle have fallen out of favor.)

They aren’t famous like footballs or baseballs, but these balls have their own thing going on. (Pro tip: Never say “balls” to a 5th grader.)

Archery With role models like Katniss Everdeen, Artemis and Robin Hood, archery is an equal-opportunity way to play hero. Archery gets kids outside and teaches them patience, strength, self-confidence and how to relax under pressure. Get them started in this ancient practice (the first archers lived in the Stone Age!) with Saturday instruction for kids 8 and up at El Dorado Regional Park Archery Range in Long Beach, www.eldoradoarchers.com. Kids must take a safety class first and equipment is provided. For more information and options, see page 35. Fencing Fencing is an excellent bet for kids, including boys looking to score a college athletic scholarship (it’s second behind gymnastics for males) and it teaches coordination, strategy and quick thinking. Parents appreciate that it’s also a gentlemanly sport. “Even when people were killing each other, it was in a very nice manner,” says the jovial Eric Holmgren of Gryphon Fencing, where they offer fencing classes to kids 5 and up. (714) 519-1343, www.gryphonfencing.com (page 38). That air of danger appeals to kids. “You get to poke somebody with a sword and not get it trouble for it,” says Holmgren. Locally we have lots of classes, competitions and camps. For more info, flip to page 38.

Lacrosse Lacrosse used to be more of a prep school thing, but now it’s accessible to everyone with an interest in catching, passing and scoring goals with a small, fast moving ball and a hand-held net (“the stick”). There’s lots of running around and it’s great for hockey, baseball and soccer players looking to enhance their skills. Many local schools have lacrosse teams, but you can get kids started as early as age 7 in a local club like Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse, www.bcylax.com. Ping Pong Whether you call it Ping Pong or table tennis, this rec room staple is a fast-paced sport that helps develop quick reflexes, hand-eye coordination and fine motor control. It’s also a surprisingly physical game, and there’s that pleasingly hollow sound of racket clacking against the ball, er, round spherical object. “When the kids play the game and have fun, they don’t play the (video) games at home as much,” says Thuy Nguyen of Orange County Table Tennis Academy in Fountain Valley, which offers after-school programs, summer camps, and group lessons. (818) 468-9201. Bowling Bowling is naturally appealing to kids. There’s a bunch of cool machinery, super heavy balls and the fascinating way the pins re-stack themselves after a frame. Although bowling is known for being the rare sport where one can keep a plate of nachos at the ready—which ain’t nothin’—it’s also a stealth way to teach physics and biomechanics. Who knew? Get them started in a youth league like the one at Irvine Lanes for kids 5-20, www.irvinelanes. com. Be sure to ask about student scholarship programs (college money for bowling...yes, please!).
