The Nutcracker The original story of The Nutcracker was written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816. Alexandre Dumas rewrote the story to appeal to children in 1847. By 1892, choreographer Marius Petipa asked Tchaikovsky to write music for the ballet. In various interpretations, the story follows a young girl who receives a nutcracker as a Christmas present. The Nutcracker comes to life as they journey to the Land of Sweets.
