publisher’snote This is the reason. Right here. That face. You have to do right by it—especially when she needs you most. And it won’t be a matter of “if,” it will be “when.” During your pet’s lifetime, you’ll be faced with an emergency situation and you’ll have to decide what to do. Your baby is going to tear a toenail, ingest a mystery object, or possibly get into a snarl with local wildlife (and these are the easy scenarios). The most important thing you can do is have a plan, and we’re here to help you develop one. Petsguide will walk you through the steps of putting together an emergency team, making a pet emergency kit and coming up with strategies to handle situations ranging from moving an injured animal and stopping a dog fight to getting skunk stink off fur. You’ll find these, and more, on pages 3 and 4. Plus, there are “Emergency Resources” (page 14), “Veterinary Services” (page 36) and tips sprinkled throughout this issue that are filled with information you’ll want in your back pocket. We’re calling this issue “The Keeper”–– resources at your fingertips so you can quickly find what you need to make your best friend better. Best of all: page 44 has a worksheet where you’ll fill in your critical information, so your plan is set and your numbers are handy––all you have to do is grab this issue and be the hero your pet knows you can be.

Faster than your pooch can swallow a pork chop, you could be facing a pet emergency. Whether it’s choking, a run-in with a car or accidental poisoning, the vast majority of dogs and cats will experience some sort of crisis in their lifetime. How you handle it could make all the difference.

The trick is to be prepared. With just a few simple steps, a stash of supplies, and this special issue of Petsguide on your bookshelf, you and your four-legged friend will be ready for anything. Here’s what to do.

Be Ready!

When to act. What to do. Where to go. Know Your Emergency Team in Advance

You probably have your favorite hair stylist saved on your phone, but what about the person who could save your pet’s life? Take 15 minutes to fill out the “Pet Emergency Contact List” on page 44, and then plug all of these numbers into your phone. Include your veterinarian’s office and the (fee-based) ASPCA Poison Control Hotline, (888) 426-4435. List a friend who can be on the scene within 15 minutes, a person who can watch your pet for a couple of days, and a pal who’d be able to board your pet for a longer stretch. Include the address and phone number of a local kennel as a back-up, plus a hotel or two with a pet-friendly policy, in case your home is uninhabitable after an earthquake. If you simply can’t keep your pet, the site rescueme.org will send out an alert to adoption agencies within two hours. Next, check pages 14-16 and 36-38 for emergency animal hospitals and veterinarian’s offices that are open after 6 p.m. and on weekends, which may be less expensive than the ER. (If you don’t trust yourself to drive, consider listing Animal Ambulance of Southern California, (866) 473-8911, for round-the-clock emergency trans-

portation. There’s a cut-out reminder on page 34 to keep by your phone.) Look for a full-service facility, recommends Denise Fleck of Sunny-dog Ink, with everything from an MRI machine, to anti-venom for rattlesnakes to blood transfusion capability. Enter that number in your phone under “Emergency Pet,” so it’s easy to find. Most important, save the hospital’s address in your car’s GPS and actually drive there. Twice. “You don’t want to waste any time figuring out if it’s on the left side or right side of the street, or where to park,” Fleck said. While you’re there, talk to the office staff about financing options in advance. Finally, designate the loved ones who would want to know if your pet’s really in trouble, recommends Dr. Annie Forslund, whose company Home Pet Euthanasia (homepeteuthanasia.com) offers 24-hour hospice care and emergency euthanasia. Set up a group text on your phone, and know how to reach them on Skype or FaceTime. “One of the most important things in moments like this is to be together,” Dr. Forslund said. Decide with your family in advance whether you’d like a paw print or clip of hair, or how you’ll handle cremation or burial. Check Dr. Forslund’s website, and find more end-of-life resources on pages 17-18.

Pet 9-1-1: Signs of an Emergency Head straight to the veterinary emergency room (see pages 14-16) if your pet shows any of these signs. If possible, call ahead so the medical team is ready for you. • Difficult, abnormal or no breathing • Loss of consciousness or collapse • Shock – weak or rapid pulse, pale gums, cool limbs, low body temperature • Near-drowning more info at www.petsguidemagazine.com

• Bloat – drooling, swollen abdomen, extreme anxiety, pacing, unsuccessful attempts to vomit or defecate • Burns or gaping wounds • Seizures • Profuse, repeated vomiting or diarrhea • Depression, lethargy, weakness, bumping into things • Electric shock

Pet Emergency Kit Stash the following for each pet in an easy-to-carry backpack or crate. Swap out older items regularly to keep things fresh. • A two-week supply of food and treats in an airtight container, plus a manual can opener, if needed • A gallon of water per day • Food and water dishes • Medication • Photos of you with your pet, plus vaccination and microchip records in a waterproof zipper bag • Toys to keep them occupied • Bedding • Collars, harnesses and leashes • A pet carrier or kennel in case you’re evacuated (most shelters won’t allow dogs on leashes) • Litter, scoop and box for cats • Specialty items for pocket pets, birds, reptiles and amphibians • Disinfectant, paper towels and garbage bags with zip ties; poop bags too • A well-stocked pet first-aid kit (see page 30 for the list) Courtesy of Sunny-dog Ink (sunnydogink.com)

Handling an Injured Pet Whether they’ve been hurt in a fight or hit by a car, you can provide quick care for an injured animal with these tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association. Approach carefully. Even the gentlest cats and dogs will bite or scratch if they’re hurt. Don’t try to petsguide winter/spring petsguide winter/spring 2013/14 | 13

give him a hug, and keep your face away from his mouth. (If you’re dealing with a wild animal, check with Animal Control first.) Talk in a soothing voice and gently check your pet from ears to tail. Stop if he yelps or becomes agitated. A badly injured animal will show signs of shock; look for rapid breathing, a rapid pulse, weakness, shaking, vomiting or lying down. As long as your dog isn’t vomiting, you can muzzle him with a towel, stockings or gauze. Bind an injured cat loosely in a towel or blanket. Try to wrap any injuries with a splint or bandage. Call your vet or hospital before you try to move your pet, so they’ll be ready for you. Transport smaller pets in a pet carrier or ventilated cardboard box. Use a board, sled, door, throw rug or blanket as a stretcher to carry your larger dog. Bring your pet’s medical records with you as you run out the door. If you can’t move your pet, contact Animal Ambulance on page 15 or mobile vets on page 38.

Skunked? Stop the Stink Your dog just ticked off a skunk, who let loose with a spray of sulfuric fumes. Here’s advice for dealing with the mess, from Dr. Rob Sharp, resident veterinarian at Country Living magazine. Skunk spray is oil-based, and the faster you get rid of it the better your chances of eliminating the stench. (Untreated, it can last for two years!) Keep your dog outside while you change into old clothes. Grab some gloves, if you have them. Back outside, try to pinpoint the spot where your dog was sprayed, and use an old towel or paper towels to sop up as much oil as you can. (Be careful not to spread the oil through his fur.)

Next, mix a 32-ounce bottle of hydrogen peroxide with a quarter cup of baking soda and two teaspoons of liquid dish detergent. (Leave the tomato juice in your cupboard—that trick only works on TV.) Wet the stinky spot, massage in the solution, and leave it on for five to 10 minutes, taking care to keep it out of his eyes, nose and mouth. Rinse well and repeat as necessary. Voila! Your dog is now stink-free.

Know Your Pet and Basic First Aid To sidestep medical emergencies, get to know every inch of your pet in advance. “It’s really important for every pet parent to do a weekly head to tail checkup, because you’re more likely to determine if something’s not quite right,” said Denise Fleck of Sunny-dog Ink. Watch for growing lumps, injuries or changes in behavior. “You also need to know if he’s stressed,” she added, “and how to comfort him, before he pulls a Houdini act.” “People aren’t aware of the way pets communicate their pain,” adds Dr. Annie Forslund. Find 60 ways to read your pet’s body language on her website, homepeteuthanasia.com, under Endof-Life Care, Understanding Pain. In case something does go wrong, get certified in basic pet first aid and CPR. Several agencies, including the American Red Cross (redcross. org), Doggie and Me (doggieandme. com), Sunny-dog Ink (sunnydogink. com) and Pet Tech (pettech.net) offer affordable, year-round, hands-on classes. (Pet Tech even has an app!) You’ll also learn how to build (or buy) a basic pet first aid kit. See page 30 for your list.

Sure, it’s all fun and games until someone nabs the wrong Frisbee. Here’s the safe way to break up a dog fight without losing a limb. 1. Stay calm. You won’t be any help if you’re screaming. 2. Don’t grab your dog by the collar; his reflex will be to turn around and bite your hand. 3. Make a loud, sudden sound. Clap, yell, stomp your feet or clang metal food bowls together. 4. If there’s a hose or water bowl handy, get the dogs wet to shock them out of their fight. 5. Try sticking something (just not you) between the brawlers. A piece of plywood, a baby gate, trash can or folded lawn chair might work. You can also try throwing a blanket over the two so they can’t see each other. 6. If you need to grab the dogs to avoid bloodshed, find a helper and get them both at the same time. 7. Grab your dog’s back legs just under the hip, where his legs connect to his trunk. Lift his back end and move him backwards like a wheelbarrow. Spin him around so he’s facing away from the other dog. 8. If your dog’s been bitten, head to the veterinarian. Even a small puncture wound can lead to serious problems. 9. Call it a day. Separate the dogs so they don’t have a chance to start the squabble all over again. If they live together, that means separate rooms until they chill out.

Help! My Dog Ate My Rubber Ducky

Disaster Preparedness for Pets You’ve stashed your cans of beans and flashlight batteries, but have you thought about how you’ll care for your pet in a disaster? Follow these tips: • Make sure your pet’s wearing a collar and ID tag, and consider investing in an ID microchip. You can find them for less than 20 bucks. • Have someone take a photo of you and your pet together (to prove ownership), plus shots of your pet from several angles. Dogs and cats run off during fires and earthquakes, said Orange County Fire Captain Steve Concialdi, and photos help emergency crews join your search.

Time Out! How to Stop a Dog Fight

• Keep a copy of your pet’s most recent immunization and medical records. You’ll need them if you’re evacuated to a shelter. • Post a pet alert sticker (free from aspca.org) in your front window to let emergency crews know you have a furry friend on-site. • Take a pet safety class from Doggie and Me (doggieandme.com) to teach your pooch how to evacuate, duck and cover, and more. • Build a pet emergency kit. See page 30 for the supply list. • Check ready.gov/caring-animals for more ideas and scart.us.

You’d be shocked—shocked!—at the things veterinarians have fished out of dogs’ mouths, throats and tummies. Puppies especially are notorious for gnawing on whatever they can sink their teeth into. If something gets stuck, your dog may paw at his mouth, show signs of panic, become unresponsive or pass out. Learn how to handle choking in advance (the instructions are different for small and large dogs) by visiting petmd.com and searching for “Choking and the Heimlich Maneuver,” or take a first-aid class (see “Nutrition and Health”). You should also be familiar with common pet poisons, and do your best to keep them out of reach. Find the updated list at aspca.org. If you think your pet has swallowed something toxic, call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at (888) 4264435 any time, day or night. See ad on inside back cover; coupon on page 34. If You Cannot Care For Your Pet Most shelters accept pets brought in by owners who can no longer care for their pet, provided the owner lives within the region served by the shelter, fees may apply. The standard holding period for stray animals to be reclaimed does not apply to owner-surrendered pets, who may not be held long enough to be adopted prior to euthanization. Some rescue operations accept owner-surrendered pets, allowing the pets to be adopted. See “Adoption and Rescue,“ “Pet Assistance” and “Shelters.” Lost and Found Pets If you have lost your pet: 1) Have someone stay behind to field phone calls, and then drive the neighborhood with a flashlight (after dark), whistle, your dog’s leash and a current photo, combing parks, schools and open areas. 2) Call your local animal control office (see “Animal Control”) for recent pick-ups and found pet reports. 3) Search www.petharbor.com, a service of the Humane Society, for listings and pictures of animals brought into shelters, updated hourly. If you have not found your pet after searching, register your pet as lost to receive an email when matching animals are listed by a shelter or registered as found on the site. 4) Blanket a five-mile radius with “Lost Dog” signs. Include 16 petsguide winter/spring 2013/14

a picture, breed, color and your phone number; listing a “reward” helps too. Leave flyers at houses on your street, shelters, pet-supply stores, vet offices, groomers, dog parks, supermarkets, the post office and coffee shops. Post “Lost Dog” ads on Craig’s List and in the local newspapers for at least two weeks. 5) Personally visit all shelters in your area; neighboring cities often contract with different shelters. Visit as often as possible. If the shelter policy allows, leave your contact information with a recent photo of your pet; shelter staff cannot always provide notification, but most will provide as much assistance as possible. See “Shelters” for location information. 6) Visit www. amberalertforpets.com, www.findtoto.com, www. fidofinder.com and www.thecenterforlostpets.com, “Amber Alerts” for lost or stolen pets; fees apply. Tip: Always have your dog wear a license and ID tag, and invest in an ID microchip for quick returns. If you have found an animal without tags: 1) Check for ID tags or tattoos, or drive him to your vet’s office to have him scanned for an ID microchip. 2) You can also put him on a leash and tell him to “go home!” He might lead you straight to his door, or to neighbors who know him. 3) By law you’re required to register him at the local animal shelter, because that’s likely the first place his owner will look. If you decide to search for the owner on your own, call and register the dog at local shelters and register the pet as found at www.petharbor.com; matching descriptions will be emailed to owners who have registered lost pets. 4) If you decide to take the animal to a shelter, you can find your city’s shelter on page 28. At the shelter, the animal will be scanned for microchip ID and logged. Generally, stray animals are held for an owner-reclamation period prior to being available for adoption. If you are worried about the life of the animal, always ask the shelter about their policy before leaving the animal. Tip: Many rescue organizations

offer advice and assistance, you can find rescues on pages 5-8. 5) If you cannot transport the animal to a shelter or find the owner on your own, call your local animal control office. SoCal Animal Response Team (SCART) Huntington Beach (714) 349-1047 www.scart.us In a disaster, they provide temporary animal sheltering and support rescue efforts. Classes also offered. Microchips - Most veterinarians, shelters and rescues offer microchip identification and placement. The vet or organization chooses a microchip company that offers additional services. Contact your local vet or shelter (see “Shelters” and Low-Cost Services under “Pet Assistance”) for fee information. Also see “Calendar” for lowcost microchip clinics. Pet Tags - For instant tags, automated machines may be found at larger pet stores. If you are looking for an alternative to the jingling “tin-tag,” consider slide-on tags, embroidered collars or wooden tags. Licensing: Why and How All dogs over the age of four months are required by law to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. The licensing law was implemented as a heath issue related to rabies. It also keeps an updated record of ownership. Residents owning or having custody of any dog must license the dog within 15 days after the license becomes due. Residents must provide proof of a California-approved rabies vaccination to obtain a license (OCCO 4-1-70). License discounts are often offered for spay and neutered animals and pets of senior citizens. Applications and fees are usually available on the city’s website and can be obtained in-person or by mail. The following agencies provide licenses for dogs and cats: Costa Mesa Animal Control (714) 754-5311 Serves Costa Mesa only. 99 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. www.costamesapd.org Irvine Animal Care Center (949) 724-7740 Serves Irvine only. 6443 Oak Canyon, Irvine. www. irvineshelter.org La Habra Animal Control (562) 905-9771 Serves La Habra only. shelters Government, non-profit or private animal shelters, commonly called “the pound,” provide shelter and care for stray, lost or abandoned animals. All shelters offer healthy animals for adoption; there is usually a fee. Most provide pictures of adoptable and found/stray animals on their website. Animals are kept at the shelter until claimed by their owners; adopted to new owners; placed with a rescue or adoption organization; or euthanized. Most shelters accept animals from residents of specific cities only. For animal control services, including found/stray animals, please see “Emergency Resources.” Also see “Adoption and Rescue” for rescues that accept owner-relinquished pets or animals from the public. Shelters fall into two categories: open or limited admission. An “open admission” facility accepts animals from animal control and the public no matter the circumstance. “Limited admission” facilities have restrictions on incoming animals brought in by the public; however, they accept any animals brought to them by animal control. Most shelters practice euthanasia for a variety of reasons and circumstances. There are few true no-kill facilities. All shelters work with rescue groups, sanctuaries and other animal welfare organizations to find families for homeless animals. If you have found an animal and need to take it to a shelter, but you are concerned about the life of the animal, ask about the shelter’s policy before you take the animal in. Many adoption and rescue organizations offer advice and/or referrals about found/lost/stray animals (see “Adoption and Rescue” for a list of organizations). more info at www.petsguidemagazine.com

Treat a Snagged Nail

If your pooch is suddenly limping or licking his paw, check his toes. Especially when they’re overgrown, it’s easy for dogs to snag their toenails on carpets, blankets or bushes. And that hurts. First, stop the bleeding with a styptic pencil, cornstarch or flour. Apply pressure with a clean cloth or paper towel for 5-10 minutes • Try to quickly pull off the snaggly nail or trim it above the break. (Find someone to help, or use a muzzle to keep your dog from nipping) • Gently wash the area to prevent infection and loosely wrap his foot with a bandage for 12-24 hours • If you can’t get the nail off by yourself, or if you see signs of swelling, oozing or bleeding after a few days, head to your veterinarian.

trails, beaches, recreation & parks City recreation departments offering a variety of dog-training classes, dog-friendly beaches, parks and trails. Dog park use requires that your dogs are current on vaccinations and that you clean up after your dogs. When visiting a leash-free dog park, keep them on leash before you go into the park and when you exit, and do not bring female dogs in heat. City and regional parks allow leashed dogs on trails and throughout other recreation areas. Park websites list additional rules and regulations. Trail use requires that all dogs must be on a leash no longer than six-feet. Many trails are shared by equestrians, bicyclists and pedestrians. All distances are approximate. Unless otherwise noted, no water or waste bags are provided, please trek with your dogs prepared and bring your own supplies. Also see “Dog Sports and Fitness” and “Training Programs” for more classes. Note: Check water conditions at dog beaches at www.brc.healthebay.com, they also have an app available for smart phones.
