My gallery would be about Chiaroscuro, looking at light and dark tones within a painting.

Collective History of Chiaroscuro Remixing Chiaroscuro Royal Hall of Chiaroscuro Grand Exhibition of Chiaroscuro

Here I have decided up to 4 names to experiment and try out different fonts with. From here, I will be able to decide which name and final font to choose for my exhibition. With these museum names, I am going to use Da Font and get different fonts to try out which one is suitable for Chiaroscuro.

Chosen Fonts and why I chose it I chose “Morpheus” font first because it gives of a historic look and if you look at some letters, they’re different and unique than most fonts. The “Chiaroscuro” looks more elegant and neat with the Morpheus font. I am not so keen on this font but it looks appealing to the viewers eyes.

I have used “Prisma” this time round; it really shows the neatness and professional look to the font. The letters are all align with one another and the lines in each letter gives it a groovy yet sophisticated touch and I really like this font because it’s not too flashy and its not too bold; the viewers can see it from afar and it’s easy to read.

This font is called “The Novice”. I really like this one because the letter spacing are equal and the alignment is the same. The hexagonal shape to the letters give it a sense of professionalism and will easily be seen on my poster.

Creating a poster for an Exhibition After looking at most posters, I have decided to design an exhibition poster on selected works on the theme of Historical Paintings. I will create a poster digitally on Photoshop and make that stand out. I will also create a sort of diary and analysis of each stage I’m doing, like on the above and how my ideas came through.

To begin with, I will be looking into posters created by real galleries and analysing them; looking into the poster and what should be on there. This poster is “Senior BFA” Exhibition, Fall 2013. It’s a gallery where graduates from University include their work in the exhibition.

Light thin lines creating another hexagonal shape; fading technique.

The background for this poster is simplistic; a beige/green colour with basic hexagonal shapes and triangles to create sophistication of the graduates works. There is little information on this poster but instantly it tells you straight away what the exhibition is about by just the title and small caption below it. The shapes on the background is simplistic and casual yet sophisticated at the same time.

This is probably where the location is and what the name of the gallery is. Above it has the season and year.

The title for the exhibition is clearly readable and it isn’t too flashy either. As I’ve said before, it needs to be sophisticated due to students graduating and creating an exhibition. They have the dates and where to sign in below the location.

This is another poster I’m researching “All four one Exhibition”. The font of the title catches the viewers eyes and it’s seen from afar. They have mentioned the four main media that is majorly used in the industry and included it on the corner of the poster. This is the dates that it’ll be previewed and opened; the preview dates are there to allow viewers to have an insight on what the exhibition is about and the actual opening times are there to warn viewers.

The “Four” in the title has different colours, relating to the four media stated above. The letter are overlapping one another creating a Chiaroscuro look.

The shades go to dark grey to medium grey and a really pale grey. As the letters overlap, it creates a darker tone.

A small information on what the exhibition is about.

There are two logos at the bottom of the poster.

Process of Poster

Next, I am going to try and do a similar style to the previous poster I looked at above and creating a poster that’s designed for Chiaroscuro. I have used Photoshop and changed the opacity of the letters, so it’s like the poster.

Here, I have overlapped the words individually to create a shadow effect, linking back to Chiaroscuro. Furthermore, I have changed the opacity so the shadows vary depending how low or high the opacity is on each letter. I am pleased with this so far but I will be testing out more ways of overlapping letters with different colours and font size on Photoshop.

I have done the first word for my title “Remixing”. I really like how this turned out because it’s relating to the previous poster I have looked into as the letters are overlapping.

I have made this shape on illustrator. By using the “Line Tool” I was able to draw the outline of the shape neatly. You can adjust the size and change the way it’s angled by using the “Black Arrow” Tool that moves objects around.

This is exactly the same shape but I have used Photoshop to fill in the hexagon shape. I’ve used black, dark grey and a lighter grey; keeping the Chiaroscuro theme.

This is the colour pallet that I used. Since you can only have two colours at a time, black isn’t showing on here. Over here, I have started designing my poster and included the “Prisma” Font. Beside the font, I have included the hexagonal shapes and changed the opacity so it’s not overlapping the painting in the background. I’ve kept the same shape but changed the shades around a little bit. Furthermore, I have also overlapped the squares so that they’re on top of each other. It is not my final outcome as I am just experimenting with features thst I have analysed in other posters for my exhibition poster.

I have decided to try out different colours for the fonts to see what the outcome would look like. It doesn’t look as sophisticated as the tonal one because it looks childish and not professional enough unlike the previous font style but it does give a groovy feeling.

Again I have used Photoshop to edit the font so it looks neat and has good quality because the colours bring out the lines within the words and when they overlap; it creates a mixture of different secondary colours that makes the font more playful. I used Photoshop because you can easily change a colour on one specific object you want to change and it’ll change instantly. I’ve changed the opacity to create the same design as before.

The purpose for this is to show I have experimented with different colours and options to see what would look good on my poster. The colour didn’t catch my eye and it didn’t bring out the meaning of “Chiaroscuro” and therefore I won’t be using it as a final poster as I don’t like when the colours overlap; it doesn’t give shade or highlight.

The plain white version of my poster is an example of my experimentation with Photoshop. Looking at the original version, it looks very plain and not sophisticated. So I have created another poster exactly the same with the font “Prisma” but with Friedrich’s painting as the background. It’s effective because I am using a painting from my exhibition to allow the audience to see what paintings will be in the gallery. Looking at the new poster; I have included the hexagonal shapes to create a professional and clean look. I’ve changed the colours on illustrator so it’s still relating to Chiaroscuro.

By using the opacity and different sizes for the hexagons, I am able to create a design that is see through so you can see the background within the shape. It gives a good look to the poster.

This is my initial poster I have created on Photoshop. The font and title are suitable for the Chiaroscuro theme and I believe that the viewers will see it from afar with its bold yet sophisticated shape. I have added hyphens on the “Remixing” and “Chiaroscuro” like the previous posters I’ve looked into. The black and white theme really catches the viewers eyes. I have included the date and time like the previous posters I have looked at and included the location of where the exhibition will be. I’ve made a sub-heading “Home of Chiaroscuro” to enhance the poster and advertise it. Furthermore, I have included the name of some artists at the front to give them a little sneak-peek of different artists that could show up.

This is my second attempt of doing another exhibition poster. I have decided to create two different types of posters so then I can have a variety of options. I really like the effect because it gives a sophisticated texture.

You can still see the reflection of the mirror and a subtle hint of the figures.

I have added a black and white effect, relating it to my Chiaroscuro theme. I’ve changed the hues and saturation so the Arnolfini Portrait “Mirror” has texture.

In this screenshot, I have shown the layers and how to hide them. By clicking on “Layer 1” I am able to hide it so that I can have “Overlay” with Layer 3.

The outcome came our really well. You are able to see the black and white Arnolfini Portrait behind the Wonderer above the Sea of Fog and it creates a mystical theme. I really like how this came out because it has more texture and detail unlike the previous poster I have created. I have included a lighter area, towards the top right hand of the poster to create a sunset feeling.

Exhibition Designs This is my first exhibition design I have done by using the “3D Styler room” online. It’s a good website that creates your own rooms. I have used it to create my exhibition plan.

Above is the room itself if you look into it I have done white walls and black flooring; representing the Chiaroscuro theme.

For my exhibition building I have used Scion wallpaper for the walls of my museum. The plain colour resembles the Chiaroscuro theme that I have been looking at. You can faintly see lines that give it depth. In contrast to this pale white wallpaper, the floors are going to be Cashmere black/grey to create dark and deep shades.

Design 2 I have decided to do another design alongside my main one so I have a variety of options. For this design; I have decided to divide more rooms than the main one which is including the entrance and probably (maybe) the reception room where you can sign in. I have used the same website to create this model. I have used; Sepia as the flooring a dark and smoky colour suited for Chiaroscuro. The walls are Birch silver wallpaper contrasting to the Sepia and I think it looks sophisticated because they both are linked to Chiaroscuro. As for the outside building, I have used Brick old mix stone for the walls which is a stone like texture I will apply to my actual model. The spaces are a lot bigger for more than one painting. My intention for both designs is to include more than just one artwork of an Artist; a special appearance to their most favourable work.

Leaflet Guide Inspiration I’ve chosen these leaflets as my inspiration for my own because they get the viewers eyes. They’re simple but effective in a way that will draw viewers in. Gerhard Richter’s exhibition has a lot of information including all his artwork.

Gerhard Richters leaflet guide inspired me to use his layout because it’s neat and the audience/visitors can see what each room has. The rooms are in order neatly and all have names, relating to that artwork. His front cover is of one of his paintings that he has done and he manipulated that to add it to his final leaflet design.

I have taken photos of Gerhard Richters leaflet guide to get inspiration from. In his guide, he has rooms such as; room 1, room 2 etc for each painting he has done. Along with these rooms, he has included information about the artwork and what it means.

For this photo, Gerhard has done the introduction page explaining what the artists does and what inspires him to do his work he does now. The introduction is long but it explains everything about the leaflet.

Over here I have the general information for the leaflet; it has future exhibitions, dates of talks and lectures and special events coming up that could interest the viewers.

Leaflet Guide on Publisher

By using Publisher, I am able to manipulate and design that fits my leaflet plan. Publisher enables you to create leaflets with no trouble. Here I have included Room 3 in bold letters and beneath it the title of the painting I will be describing and explaining.

I have included the date within the title so the audience is able to know the date of the painting.

At the bottom of the page, I have included a quote that is from Emmanuel Kant that represents Joseph Wright of Derby. I have included it in because it makes the page look like Emmanuel Kant has signed it, with his quote about Joseph.

This is the original photo before I manipulated it on Photoshop to create that black and white touch.

In this screenshot, I have taken the mirror from “The Arnolfini Portrait and used it as a starter for my poster. I changed the hue and saturation of the black and white to create an intense chiaroscuro touch. You can still see the reflection of the couple but it is distorted to create an old

After creating the base of the poster, I then decided to create another layer of “The Wonderer Above the Sea of Fog” as my main painting for the poster. I created a Blending option “Bevel and Emboss” and “Outer Glow” to create the shine on the top right of the poster, to show light and darkness for the viewers.

By using an overlay on the Arnolfini portrait, I am able to bring forward the “Wonderer above the Sea of Fog” into place and create a stunning effect with the bright light on the top right hand corner. This is effective because it really brings out the Chiaroscuro feeling to the poster.

Final Poster This is my final poster after including the text and Title. I really like this because it has more effects and features than my previous attempt of a poster. The added effects are bold and it attracts the audience from a far. The title “Remixing Chiaroscuro” is the same font as the previous poster, but I have decided to include an outer glow to create depth. The background for the poster is more intense and sophisticated; there are more layers and more effects including the light on the top right hand corner which brings out the light and contrasts with the dark. Overall I am pleased with this poster because it really catches the meaning of “Chiaroscuro”.
