I am a passionate designer who has found a love for music, writing, athletics, family, friends, and making others laugh. I am often referred to as “Joy, seeing as it is my middle name, but it is also what I strive to exude in every situation. I believe design has the power to make a difference in society as a whole, and also in individuals’ lives. With my ability to work hard, work well with others, design with a purpose, and stay positive, I am seeking to make a difference through impactful design.

Program: This is a convention center and hotel that will service the University of Missouri and city of Columbia. A client is asking that the hotel be made up of 400 rooms, and the convention center be able to seat up to 1,000 guests at one time, while also providing a spa, two cafes, and two restaurants. The building will not only service the university, but it will work with the university as well, providing hands-on learning experience to students. Through hosting events, catering and preparing food, and gaining practice in managing the hotel and restaurants on property, students’ overall learning experiences will be tremendously enhanced, thus furthering the University.
Concept: This hotel and convention center is interconnected with the natural surroundings. The site is covered in lush greenery, which is reflected in the overall design of the buildings. Along with this, the form of the building is influenced by both the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, the curvature of the site, and the many rock quarries located in Columbia, Missouri. This influence unifies the building with Missouri and the city of Columbia. Through this concept, luxurious interiors are created. Visitors experience a feeling of comfort and pride in the University of Missouri and the city of Columbia.

Program: The neighborhood Prenzlauer Berg has many bars, cafes, and restaurants. Their guests are local residents, many of whom are hip, urban families with small children, and tourists. This new restaurant in the boiler-room of the ‘Oderberger Stadtbad’ will create a unique atmosphere in order to distinguish this establishment from all the others in close proximity. However, they do not have a preconceived conception about the appropriate atmosphere for the new place. They are looking for a designer who will present them with a strong vision.
Concept: The Noodle Bar is a restaurant which “embraces the rough” and brings this World War II space back to life. Its heavy, linear structure is transformed through the use of modern curves, resembling the shapes of noodles, and a monochromatic color scheme. Suddenly, this once dirty and unusable space becomes the unforgettable environment for pasta to be served to the artistic, young, Berlin crowd.

Program: Columbia, Missouri has many bars, restaurants, and local art events and exhibits. Its guests are local residents, students of the multiple universities in the city, and families visiting their students. There are not many spas located in the area, so this spa will be designed to fulfill the need many residents contain. They are looking for a designer who will present a strong design, offering an escape from school, work, and the stress of everyday life.
Concept: The spa design emphasizes the contrast between hard and soft. As one enters in search of an escape from the busyness of life, a translucent entrance invites her to explore the amenities. Throughout the active space, she will find hard lines and materials, yet, the relaxation spaces transform into smooth, curved lines and soft materials. Whether one comes to relax through working out or through a body treatment, she will leave feeling refreshed and rejuvinated.

Program: Columbia, Missouri contains a vast amount of forestry. For this project, the site is amidst a plush greenery, creating the ideal setting for a chapel. The chapel must embody emotion-evoking design through its strong design concept. It should not contain any furniture, as the chapel’s architecture should speak for itself. The architecture will become one with the interior design and, together, the two will create a space of peaceful meditation for a non-denominational chapel.
Concept: The design of the Veil of Trees Chapel is driven by an attempt to create an autonomous religious experience by placing the chapel in the midst of all the woods. The concept emphasizes simplicity and humility as the chapel responds to the changing patterns of light in the forest. As one moves from the entrance toward the view of the lake, the movement from darkness to light as well as the unique shadows casted through the glass evokes spiritual emotions. Built-in seating allows users to come and go as they please and accomodate the open space to fit their needs. The chapel comes from and belongs in the veil of trees.

Peter Bohlin. Catacin Mountains, Maryland. 1992-1996 The structure of this house was Architect Peter Bohlin’s main focus. Because of this, while building this model, I included each stick for the roof, each log on the outer area of the house, and each panel of glass. The house is built on a ledge, which is another key focus of the design. The site my model sits on indicates this ledge, allowing viewers to see the impact it has on the overall design. To portray how the house is divided, I used different angles for the sticks. Since the house was designed to look as if it belongs in the woods, it is important that I separated manmade and nature. Finally, light and translucency are large aspects of this space. I used plexiglass where windows are located on the house. This has deep contrast between the thick, dark brown structure, and illustrates how the house is opaque in the front and translucent in the back.
This charcoal self-portrait titled “Uplifter” portrays my personality. I chose to make this facial expression because it describes me well. I am outgoing, light-hearted, and resilient, which often lifts others up amidst the everyday stresses of life.
This charcoal drawing was inspired by my dream of being an Interior Designer. I have known since I was six-years-old that Interior Design was my calling, so I drew this to enhance my skill of drawing interiors. The four flowers in the vase all have different meanings that describe my personality, and the two picture frames indicate important parts of my life.
Art Nouveau Sketches
This charcoal drawing is my interpretation of the American culture. We are always striving to move up in our jobs, so much so that it often takes a toll on our everyday lives. America has begun to run on caffeine, as represented through all the energy drinks in the foreground. Coffee, a main contributor to society’s caffeine obsession, is placed in a high heal, indicating that it is what gets us up and walking to work each day.

This coffee table is made of three types of hardwood, accenting each other well to ensure a timeless design. The multiple wood types allow the consumer to match it easily with other items in a space, adding to the overall decor. In addition, the cris-crossed legs add a unique feature, setting this coffee table apart.
