Fun Math Games:

Is It Possible To Have Fun With A Math App?

Do fun math games really exist? For many people the thought of playing a game that involves school subjects is not necessarily appealing. However a cool math app for iPhone, iPad or android device can make all the difference, and if it is addictive enough it can keep you entertained while you carry on doing the math! Fun math games help both adults and children to keep their mental agility in tip top condition. From basic counting skills to more complex geometric games, adults and children alike become keen to improve on their last scores, and forget that they are using their brain in quite complex ways. The competitive nature of the games encourages scores to be posted to Games Centre or OpenFeint where they can be compared with others. Young children enjoy engaging with characters and story, and will often become engrossed with a fun math app and enjoy the math challenges that make up the game. Basic arithmetic and problem solving skills can be tested in the course of a highly entertaining game, and desire to win will bring them back for more. Fun math games intended for adults include such classics as Sudoku, Tetris and even Angry Birds. Without a player realising it, this popular game challenges their knowledge and application of the principles of geometry and physics. The player is fully engaged in these addicting games, and determined to beat the last score even if it means inadvertently doing more math! What advantage does a fun math app have over old-fashioned paper and pencil? Well, if paper and pencil are all you have available, then they can potentially make for a very entertaining time. However, with the ever increasing app market there is an ever growing number of games with engaging graphics and entertaining game play, allowing a huge number of options for keeping both adults and children amused and cognitively challenged. All with the ability to record scores and compete with people all over the world. You can't do that with paper and pencil! I can understand that most people would not intentionally seek out a math - based app, but as mentioned earlier, even Angry Birds is a math game, and it has definitely reached the masses. I would suggest trying some others that you may not have heard of, and you might be surprised just how much entertainment you can get from fun math games.

There is one particular recommendation I would like to make, which is for an app which is currently available in the App Store. Mathris is an addictive tetris-style math game which is free to download. Numbered balls continuously drop into the screen and your aim is to prevent the screen from filling up by eliminating balls. Balls can be eliminated by touching those that add up to the target value; so, for example, if the target value is 10, you can get rid of balls numbered 2, 2, and 6 (2+2+6=10) or 3 and 7 (3+7=10).

The more balls you touch to reach the target number, the higher your score, and the target value changes as the game progresses to keep you on your toes!

Mathris combines addictive gaming with fun mental gymnastics to provide a great game for all the family.
