Projekat „Sopstvena soba” podržava različite umetničke i istraživačke prakse žena umetnica.

a woman artist’s ‘room of one’s own’

The project “A Room of One’s Own” of the Creative-Educational Center Art Box, also the founder of the Art Box portal, examines how the working space of female artists influences their artistic identity. It refers to the essay “A Room of One’s Own” (1929) by Virginia Woolf (1882–1941), where she writes:

A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write. The project “A Room of One’s Own” supports various artistic and research practices of women artists. It also draws attention to the lack of functional and sustainable residency programs (especially those run by non-governmental organizations) in Serbia. Additionally, it highlights the insufficient local support and mobility for local visual artists, curators, writers, and gender critics, especially those from young and marginalized groups. Through the artistic-residency project of KEC Art Box and a series of conversations with women artists and researchers, “A Room of One’s Own” explores various personal, intimate, and pulic spaces – such as studios, artistic residencies,

public libraries, cafes, parks, as well as kitchens, bedrooms, children’s rooms, and quiet rooms – where women (artists/curators/writers/gender critics) can isolate themselves, think, read, create, explore, write... Referencing historical and social barriers that prevented women from fully dedicating themselves to art and intellectual work, “A Room of One’s Own” emphasizes the need for physical and mental spaces where women (artists, writers, curators, researchers, etc.) can focus on themselves and develop their artistic, theoretical, and curatorial practice unhindered. Although the experiences, perceptions, and narratives of the participating artists in the “A Room of One’s Own” project differ, their clear need for a physical and mental context, symbolically termed by Virginia Woolf as “own room” in her essay, remains a metaphor for the autonomy, intellectual, and creative freedom of women artists.

Women have been perceived as the inferior Other in life, reduced to muses or objects in art. Often denied the right to education, financial independence, personal spaces for thinking and creating. 12

inferior other

While many might argue that this is no longer the case today, contemporary society cannot be seen as a coherent environment because differences are evident not only in gender but in all segments, from geographical, economic, religious to gastronomic. The theme of “A Room of One’s Own” should also encompass the so-called culture of immigrant women, the LGBT+ population, as well as members of different ethnic and cultural identities, the art of people with disabilities... This, in turn, opens up other questions such as: have the #MeToo movement and cancel culture further empowered women, or have important issues been reduced to ‘hashtag trends’; what do statistics on gender equality mean in practice, and so on.These are issues that this project aims to explore in the next phase. The project “A Room of One’s Own” was realized thanks to the support of residency centers in Sweden and Norway; a part of the project was also supported by the City Administration for Culture of Novi Sad.
