Visit Goodison Park, it is the oldest football stadium in the history of English football and has an unbeatable atmosphere on match days. Go to The Jacaranda. Most students go to the same sort of clubs on a night out, so it is nice to go somewhere different. The Jacaranda has a record shop, dance floor and live music in the basement. It is an excellent underground club, and it’s where the Beatles had their first ever gig! Go for a walk around the docks. It may sound a bit boring, but it is a great place to go for a run or just a stroll. It is one of the most iconic places in Liverpool and it is magnificent. *All recommendations are Adam’s own and do not represent the views of LJMU.

Applicant Handbook 2020 | 19
CONTRACTS Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found. Tenancies commence on Friday 18 September 2020 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 9 July 2021. Induction week for new students starts on Monday 21 September and teaching begins for most courses on Thursday 24 September 2020. It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – e.g. nursing – you can usually extend the tenancy period over the summer.
Don’t forget that you don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all our Halls if you wish.
MONEY MATTERS Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off! It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford. More information about student funding can be found on pages 37-43. *Your guarantor will most likely be a parent or guardian, and they must agree to act in this capacity.
If you have any concerns about money and student accommodation, please contact our Accommodation Office. accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk | 0151 231 4166

MATURE STUDENTS
HEALTHCARE STUDENTS
DISABLED STUDENTS
The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations.
Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed! For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Marybone 3 and share their flat with students on similar courses.
Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. We can also arrange for you to visit our accommodation to check that it will meet your needs. To discuss further contact our Disability Advice team.
If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH): liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation.
Rooms at Marybone 3 will also be available if your course starts earlier than the standard academic calendar. Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing January – March 2021 should check ljmu. ac.uk/accommodation to see what options are available.

Criminology and Sociology student Chantelle Lunt started a business that fulfils her passion for wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. Here she tells you how she spotted an opportunity and turned it into a new business, securing an award from the Bathgate Start-up Fund through the Centre for Entrepreneurship.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS IDEA The Little Green Juice Box is a mobile juice and smoothie bar, and a juice and smoothie supplier. We create cold pressed juices and fresh smoothies using locally sourced (and some home grown) ingredients. We operate from a quirky, upcycled vintage horse trailer, trading at sporting events and festivals. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE? I would like to have a fleet of little green ‘boxes’ dedicated to bring healthy, vegan friendly food options to events across the UK. HOW DID LJMU’S CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP HELP? LJMU’S start-up school has been an invaluable resource in helping me to take my business from the planning stages to actually trading. I also successfully applied for the Bathgate fund to help buy some of the more expensive pieces of equipment for the juice box.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FUTURE LJMU ENTREPRENEURS? 1. Plan for success but always have a back-up. It’s the attention to detail that helps things to run smoothly. 2. It’s ok to fail – when you run a business, things go wrong, a lot. But, it’s what you do afterwards that counts. Learn from your mistakes and remember that it’s never too late to turn things around. 3. Networking works – I’m a bit networking phobic but, the Centre for Entrepreneurship convinced me to get out there and meet other business people, online and in the real world. I’ve made some very helpful connections at networking events and, finally, setting up a LinkedIn account helped me to secure some big clients online too. STUDENT LOANS FOR LIVING COSTS (MAINTENANCE LOAN) In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for a loan for your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and if you are living in your parental home or elsewhere.

HAVE YOU STUDIED BEFORE?
LJMU BURSARY
Student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required). Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons.
LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500.
It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. We can clarify exactly how your prior study will impact on your future entitlement and advise you what steps to take to maximise any funding available.
Speak to us in confidence: moneyadvice@ljmu.ac.uk | 0151 231 3153/3154
LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you. To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/ year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum University tuition fee which is £9,250 for 2020/21.

DSA is paid on top of the standard student finance package and does not have to be paid back. You should apply for DSA when you apply for your student funding - please don’t wait. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% certain which course you will be studying, as just like your application for student finance it is possible to update your DSA application at a later date. The Disability Advice team at LJMU can help with all aspects of applying for DSA so please feel free to contact us at any point during the application process for help or advice.

A Childcare Grant will cover up to 85% of approved or accredited childcare in both term time and holidays. The Adult Dependants’ Grant is for students with a dependant partner and Parents Learning Allowance is a grant for those with children.

SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS AND STUDENTS ESTRANGED FROM THEIR FAMILIES
In 1957 John Lennon joined LJMU’s School of Art and Design, and it was to provide the springboard for so many influential aspects of his life: it was where he met Stuart Sutcliffe and Paul McCartney. In recognition of the influence the University played in his life, and thanks to the generous support of Yoko Ono, LJMU has set up the John Lennon Imagine Awards to help students who have either been in local authority care or who are estranged from their parents. Eligible students receive a cash bursary of £1,000 per year of their course, in addition to funding awarded by social services. We also have a dedicated member of staff here to support you and offer advice on everything from university life, budgeting to student accommodation – and anything in between.
“The John Lennon Imagine Awards provide extra support for young people who perhaps need it most. I am delighted to have been able to set up these awards in John’s name… he genuinely would have wanted to have helped these students achieve their personal goals.” YOKO ONO
YOUNG ADULT CARERS LJMU is committed to supporting young adult carers and currently works in partnership with Barnardos Young Adult Carers Service in Liverpool. Our dedicated member of staff for young adult carers can provide you with further information and advise you on what support is available.

SCHOLARSHIPS
WE BELIEVE EVERYONE IS GOOD AT SOMETHING, AND WANT TO REWARD YOUR SUCCESS.
LJMU scholarships are worth an extra £1,000 or £10,000 in additional funding and they are awarded for every year of your degree. How would you spend yours?
Whether it’s a new laptop, help with accommodation costs or learning how to drive – how you spend your scholarship money is up to you. We don’t just award our scholarships to straight A students either (though academic ability is important); we are more interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show us that they are hardworking, passionate about something and a success at what they do. So what are you waiting for?
