STUDYING IN THE UK

INTRODUCTION TO LJMU

Choosing where and what to study as an international student is a life-changing decision. This booklet is designed to make your journey easier.

LJMU offers an exceptional student experience renowned for its high quality teaching, innovation, student supportive structures and ground-breaking research… all within one of the world’s most vibrant and multicultural cities, Liverpool.

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has expert University staff available to guide you through the application process and to help ensure that you choose the degree best suited to your requirements and professional ambitions. Please see the Contact Us section of this guide for the best teams to contact.

We are proud of our status within the city of Liverpool, of our partnerships with longstanding cultural institutions, our extensive links with employers, entrepreneurs and business leaders and our influence on the cityscape with new state-of-the-art buildings becoming modern landmarks. Liverpool is a world-class cosmopolitan city that welcomes its diverse student community from all around the globe. Many of LJMU’s courses complement aspects of the city’s most prestigious recognitions, such as the proud winners of the Capital of Culture 2008 and the city’s very own waterfront being awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2004, putting it on a par with the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.

SHERIF IBRAHIM COURSE: PHARMACY (MPHARM), CLASS OF 2006 CURRENT JOB: PHARMACY MANAGER, MCARTHUR DRUGS In 2002, Sherif decided to embark upon a journey to the UK to aid his dream of becoming a pharmacist. After searching in his home country of Canada, he encountered a lack of options in his chosen field and branched out to the idea of higher education overseas. “I did a lot of research and emailed lots of schools. I started talking to Dr Peter Elliot at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and I loved how the program was structured.” Making the journey to Liverpool expanded Sherif’s circle of friends and opened him up to experiences he would never have encountered had he stayed in his home province. “I can honestly say I really enjoyed my time at LJMU and those were the best years of my life. I made lifelong friends. I loved the city and I became a Liverpool FC supporter.

I would highly recommend LJMU for the MPharm programme as it benefited me greatly in achieving my career goals. After graduating I worked as a hospital pharmacist at Peterborough regional health centre (PRHC). Now, I am the Pharmacy Manager at Macarthur Drug Store.” Sherif particularly enjoys the interactions he now has with patients in his home town of Fenelon Falls, he is able to follow their patient journey long after diagnosis. This has been one of the driving forces behind his decision to become a pharmacist and, building up this trust and rapport with his patients, is one of the most rewarding aspects of his job.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY CENTRE (Study Group) The International Study Centre provides international and EU students with a direct route onto a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at LJMU. During the International Foundation Year or International Year One programme, you will receive a conditional offer of a degree place at LJMU. Each programme has different entry requirements so that you get the level of teaching you need. These courses are managed and taught by Study Group, a world leader in education and training for international students, and offer direct progression onto a range of undergraduate degrees and postgraduate programmes. For more information, please visit: ljmu.ac.uk/isc

IFY / IY1 / PMP PATHWAY PROGRAMMES The International Foundation Year (IFY), International Year One (IY1) and PreMasters programmes (PMP) not only help improve your English language skills further but focus on the academic knowledge you will need when you progress to the University. Choose the programme that is appropriate for you, depending on whether you plan to join an undergraduate degree from the first year or second year or progress directly onto a Master’s degree. Check the intakes of each programme too, as you can start your chosen course at different points throughout the year, depending on which best suits you.

IFY PROGRESSION ROUTES LJMU specialise in Business, Law and Social Studies, as well as Engineering, Computing and Life Sciences. Once you have completed the International Foundation Year (IFY) and achieved the required grades, you can progress into your chosen Undergraduate degree at LJMU.
