MATURE STUDENT EVENTS At LJMU we have a rich tradition of welcoming mature students across all our programmes of study. Age is not a barrier to study, it can be an advantage and we value the life skills and motivation that our mature students display.
Come and meet us We are committed to welcoming people back on to campus as soon as possible. Our programme of drop-in coffee mornings and events will begin in September 2021 (subject to COVID-19 regulations). At our events you will be able to speak to staff and students, discuss accommodation, receive funding advice and pick up tips for your UCAS application. These are family friendly events and refreshments are provided.
Online chats for mature students At our monthly chats you’ll be able to talk to LJMU students and a member of staff. Topics covered include applying to university, student finance and student life as a mature student.
You can find details of all our virtual and on campus events at ljmu.ac.uk/ returning-toeducation
Mature student network Meeting other students and making friends at university is important whatever your age. Our students’ union, JMSU, run various student networks to help you connect to other students, develop your communities and empower you to act collectively to make positive change at LJMU. The Networks will be chaired by the associated PartTime Officer. Each network has a connected Facebook community.

SHAPING FUTURES SINCE 1823 LJMU can trace its roots back to 1823 and the foundation of Liverpool’s Mechanics’ and Apprentices’ Library. We’ve come a long way since then, becoming a university in 1992 and we are now ranked as 49th in the UK*. Throughout our history we have championed education for all; from our earliest students in the 19th Century through to today’s skilled graduates, who are driving forward 21st Century innovations and economic success, both in the UK and overseas. We take our name from one of the UK’s most successful businessmen, Sir John Moores, who turned his love of football into a business empire that was worth millions. Born into a working class family, he proved that with vision and hard work, anyone can achieve success. So if you have talent, are willing to work hard and grasp every opportunity that comes your way, we are the University that can help you achieve your ambitions.

ENCOURAGING ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP We help our students make their mark and become truly engaged with their community, whether that’s based on campus, within the city of Liverpool or across the world. Students take up mentorship and leadership roles, make a difference through student societies, inspire schoolchildren and support members of the community.
ACTING SUSTAINABLY From our emissions reduction targets and recycling schemes to our Green Travel Plan and sustainable food initiatives – we’re playing our part in tackling environmental challenges.
CELEBRATING DIVERSITY At LJMU, we believe: ‘we are always equal, but never the same’. AS A NEW MATURE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT YOU HAVE A GREAT RANGE OF ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU WHILE STUDYING AT LJMU Each year the university sets aside a number of full flats for new postgraduate or mature undergraduate students in several of the halls offered to new students. Students who choose one of these flats will therefore not have to share a living space with new undergraduates who are coming to university directly from school or college. In this context ‘mature’ means students who are at least 21 years old when they first enrol at the university.
For the academic year 2021/22 rooms have been set aside for such students in St Andrew’s Gardens, Marybone 1, Atlantic Point, Agnes Jones House and Albert Court. Bedrooms at Albert Court and Atlantic Point feature private en-suite bathrooms and are good value. Parking is available at both sites at an additional cost. In addition, there are self-contained studios available at The Arch, Byrom Point and Grand Central.

Three things you like about your job? – I love to sell face to face. I do local makers markets and last year I was part of the Curated Makers pop up in John Lewis Liverpool. It’s brilliant to see the reaction on people’s faces when they appreciate your designs.
What relevant work experience/skills have proved most useful in running a business? – I have worked many jobs including nine years in HMV where I was a manager. Every single job I’ve had has contributed in some way to my capabilities as a sole trader and entrepreneur. Because I have worked a lot, and know how employable I am, it means that I don’t have a fear of failure. If I have to shut up Pin Head
tomorrow it would be sad but I would be able to move onto another project or job. This doesn’t mean I don’t care, it means I can take risks and live with the outcome no matter what.
What help or support did you access from LJMU and how was this useful? – I have had some great tips and pointers from the Centre for Entrepreneurship, the most important one being; try to keep it simple, it’s easy to get carried away with lots of ideas but being great at one thing is so much better. I graduated with first class honours in Marketing in 2019 and used my own business as the case study for my final project. This really helped me to get a deep understanding of my market position plus the opportunities and the risks of my business. Although I did fail to identify the
global pandemic as a threat so a lot of those plans had to be scrapped!
What’s next for your business? – I’m really excited for retail businesses post-lockdown. I have some markets that I’ve signed up to plus an exciting stint at a new bar that’s opening in the Baltic area - a mini shipping container ready for me to dress and set up stall. I’m really chuffed for my stockists that have been eagerly awaiting lockdown easing so they can reopen too; Florence and Fox (Crosby); Mersey Made (L1); Childwall Emporium (Childwall); Voglio (Allerton); and Arts Hub 47 (Aigburth). I’m about to print some t-shirts and totes with a brand new local design too which will be a first for me. For latest Pin designs and news, check out: pinheaduk.com

THE FACTS ABOUT WHAT YOUR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION WILL COST AND HOW YOU CAN PAY n You are charged a tuition fee for every year of your course. Fees for 2022 have not been set yet. In 2021, LJMU fees were set at £9,250* per year for all full-time undergraduate degree programmes. n
You don’t have to pay tuition fees up front – subject to eligibility, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course. This is paid direct to the University.
n
You can also take out a maintenance loan to help cover your living expenses such as rent and food. This loan is paid direct to you in three instalments.
n Dependent upon where you live in the UK, you may also qualify for grants for living costs too. n You don’t start paying back your student loan until you have left university and are earning over the threshold. The current threshold is £26,575 for students from England and Wales and £19,390 for students from Northern Ireland and Scotland.
The amount of funding you can receive depends on where in the UK you normally live, your household income and if you will be living at home or in other accommodation while you study. For more information visit the following websites:
n
Your monthly repayments will be a percentage of your earnings and are not based on how much you borrowed from the Student Loans Company.
n You may also be eligible for additional funding that doesn’t have to be paid back, but this depends on your household income. n LJMU offers a fantastic range of targeted support for students from lower income households plus scholarships for talented and academically gifted students. n Targeted support is also available for students with disabilities, students with children or students who have been in care or are estranged from their families.

If your income falls below £26,575* (e.g. if you go backpacking) your loan repayments will automatically stop

MAINTENANCE LOAN In addition to a tuition fee loan, full-time undergraduate students can also apply for a maintenance loan to help cover their living costs. I was awarded the LJMU Community Excellence Scholarship based on my work with arts in the community. I used my videography skills to raise money for charity, making several fundraisers and generally got involved in as much community work within the arts as I could. Don’t hesitate to apply for scholarship - it’s definitely made life easier, it gives you a safety net and just takes some of the pressure off. Peter McKillop BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying
STUDENT SUPPORT FUND Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances. Students who find themselves in such a position can apply for LJMU’s Student Support Fund.

WORKING OUT YOUR BUDGET For many students, going to University will mean this is the first time you have been responsible for making your own decisions and paying for things yourself. While this is exciting, it is important that you don’t get carried away and that you make sure you actually know how much money you have from the start.
We are not going to tell you what to spend your money on; that is for you to decide. We do want to give you some advice about what you will need to pay for at University, point out some of the common pitfalls to avoid and give you some handy tips for survival. Strangely enough, many students run out of money as they never actually work out how much money they have. By completing a budget sheet (we have done one here or you can find your own online) you will at least have an idea of how much money you have and can start to feel in control. Student finance is paid in three (huge) instalments, and the good news is if you are in halls you pay your rent in three instalments too, so it is probably easier to work out your budget three times per year (each term) in line with this.

WE ASKED SOME OF OUR STUDENTS FOR SOME OF THEIR MONEY SAVING TIPS:
Book travel home well in advance to get the best deals – last minute travel is always more expensive.
Once you have paid your rent for the term, and worked out how much you have to live off per week, draw out that much cash (or move it to another bank account) and work on the basis that this is your money for the week. Working out your money weekly is so much easier than termly.
Money off vouchers only save you money if you need the thing in the first place (and obviously, if you can afford it!)
Bring a packed lunch to uni a couple of days a week and save £500 over the term – enough for a holiday!
Plan your meals for the week and check what food you actually need; shopping every day and impulse buys cost a lot more money.

HOW TO APPLY UCAS institution name: LJM UCAS institution code: L51 Applications for fulltime undergraduate courses To apply to study on a fulltime undergraduate course at LJMU you will need to submit an online application through UCAS. The ‘Apply’ service at ucas.com allows you to fill in your application anytime, anywhere (please note: there is an application fee for this service and deadlines apply). You have the option of choosing five courses on your UCAS application. You can apply for just one course or use all five choices; you can also apply for more than one course at any institution.
Filling in your UCAS application form When we consider your UCAS application, your ability to achieve the entry criteria is just one of the areas we take into account. An important part of the application form is your personal statement, which is your opportunity to tell us more about yourself. You should include your skills,
relevant interests and hobbies, along with why you want to study the course. Any work experience or voluntary work should be mentioned here, but don’t just state where and when, tell us about what you have learnt and what you enjoyed. We are looking for motivation, commitment and enthusiasm. This is your opportunity to convince us why you would like to study at LJMU. Occasionally courses listed here may change throughout the year; new courses may become available or courses may be changed.
