ALWAYS AHEAD OF OUR TIME
In July 1823 an institution was founded which became the catalyst for an educational revolution in the city of Liverpool.
The Liverpool Mechanics and Apprentices Library evolved into the Mechanics Institute and, through mergers and collaborative partnerships, eventually led to the establishment of Liverpool John Moores University in 1992.
In 2023, we mark our 200th anniversary by celebrating our people, our students, our staff and our partners and community
I was nervous and anxious when I started university because it was the start of a new experience far from my country. But, I was quickly submerged by positive feelings thanks to the inclusive environment of LJMU.

HOME TO 500,000 PEOPLE AND ONE UNIQUE CHARACTER

OUR SPIRIT SHAPES THE WORLD
Liverpool’s unique charm has a universal appeal. From the Ropewalks with its independent shops, clubs and bars to the Georgian Quarter, home to our two cathedrals and countless cobbled streets. Our city centre has an award-winning shopping district and the Baltic Triangle is home to hidden cafés, vintage markets and street food pop-ups.
Liverpool is a compact city, safe and best explored on foot, so the good news is that you can leave your car behind. And if you do want to venture further afield, whether it’s by train, car, boat or plane, you’ll find Liverpool easily accessible from almost anywhere thanks to our great transportation links.
A CULTURAL CRUCIBLE FOR OVER 800 YEARS

*Rough Guides, World’s Friendliest Cities, 2021
What do I like about living in Liverpool?
Everything! The people are very friendly, the city is beautiful, there is always something going on - and there are good transport connections with other cities so I can go and see my friends easily.

FOOD AND DRINK
Liverpool certainly has it all when it comes to food and drink. From specialist shops selling halal and kosher foods to the oldest Chinatown in Europe, you could munch your way through a whole world of cuisine and never have to eat the same dish twice! Home to cool cafés, world food supermarkets and excellent eateries to suit every taste and budget –you’re spoilt for choice. You can also take your pick of our many pubs, nightclubs, alcohol-free bars and coffee shops.
MUSIC
As the birthplace of The Beatles, it comes as no surprise that a great music scene exists in this city. There’s music to be heard all around Liverpool. Discover the city’s up-and-coming bands or find your favourite acts at Liverpool’s O2 Academy, Liverpool Guild of Students or M&S Bank Arena Liverpool. There’s always something to suit every taste, whether your playlists are full of hiphop, electronic, jazz or rock’n’roll.
Our passion for football runs deep; with three professional football teams in Merseyside – Liverpool FC, Everton FC and Tranmere Rovers. However, world-class sport in the region goes far beyond football. Merseyside is the golfing capital of England – boasting more than 40 courses, seven of which are leading championship venues, while the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club produces elite, international level athletes. We’re also home to the Grand National, and the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament. In 2022, Liverpool hosted the Gymnastics British Championships.
SPORT FESTIVALS SHOPPING
We are all shopping on a budget, but no matter if yours is large or small, you’ll find what you are looking for in Liverpool. From the high street stores and designer outlets in Liverpool One and Met Quarter, to the independent boutiques on Bold Street or markets in the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool is the place to go shopping. Cool and quirky vintage stores are the hidden gems of the city’s student areas.
No matter what you’re into, there’s plenty going on when it comes to Liverpool’s buzzing festival scene. Annual festivals include Sound City, Africa Oyé, Homotopia, Brazilica, Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and Positive Vibration Festival of Reggae – to name just a few!
FAITH
We are a multiracial, multicultural city supporting a diverse range of religions and communities. The two cathedrals – Anglican and Roman Catholic – may dominate the skyline but Greek orthodox, Unitarian and numerous European churches can be found across Liverpool.
The mosque at 8 Brougham Terrace was the first to be established in England and the Al Rahma mosque near the city centre holds up to 1,000 people. Liverpool also has a thriving Jewish community and the Princes Road Synagogue is one of the finest buildings in the city. Nigerian, Somalian and Sikh communities are well established, alongside a Hindu temple on Edge Lane and active Buddhist centre in Aigburth.
ARTS AND CULTURE
We have amazing events every year that celebrate our diverse communities and our creative souls. The Liverpool Irish Festival, Liverpool Arab Arts Festival, DaDaFest, Brouhaha and Liverpool Pride to name a few. Light Night Liverpool is an awesome city takeover offering breathtaking light shows, art installations and street performances, with latenight opening of our museums and galleries. World-renowned classic and contemporary art collections find their homes at the Walker Art Gallery, Tate Liverpool, Open Eye Gallery, FACT, Bluecoat and the Liverpool Biennial.
GREEN SPACES
Parks and waterfront walks in Liverpool are firm favourites. Sefton Park, Festival Gardens, Otterspool Promenade, Princes Park, Calderstones Park and Greenbank offer perfect outdoor space all within easy reach of the city centre. Head further north to explore the beaches at Crosby, Formby and Southport.
BEACH DAY TRIPPERS
Our city is bustling but our water’s edge offers a place to stop, take in the big skies and enjoy the space between.
Liverpool’s well placed to explore some of the North West’s most wild and wonderful locations – all easily accessible by train, bus, ferry or car.
If you’re studying in Liverpool, you have to take the famous ferry ’cross the Mersey at least once – arguably the most fun way to discover the Wirral coastline. Walk, cycle or roller skate along the prom at New Brighton, or in low tide head across to Hilbre Island in West Kirby. Overlooking the River Dee, Welsh hills and River Mersey, exploring the Wirral Peninsula is a brilliant day trip out.
The further north of Liverpool you head, the more beach you will find. Closest is Crosby Beach, home to Antony Gormley’s Another Place art installation. The fast-moving tides of the River Mersey give emerging drama to the 100 life-sized cast iron figures, who all stare out to sea.
A little further up the coast, the shape-shifting sand dunes of Formby beach will blow the cobwebs away so you can hit the books with a clear head. Beyond the dunes are sweeping coastal pinewoods owned by the National Trust and home to the native red squirrel; a real treat to spot one, so tread softly.

We got involved with the Discovery Internships programme at LJMU and hosted two students to work as a Business Development Manager and Brand Manager. It is a fantastic programme, the Students showed a huge appetite for learning and development. We were able to trust them to work independently within our guidance. We would love even more students to work with, taking on two previously was great, and we have so much more experience to offer even more students.
Alex James Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer, The Wellbeing DoctorsI completed a 6-week Discovery Internship with Homesure Property/Andrew Louis estate agents. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working as a social media marketing intern producing a marketing plan with content for both companies to use for the following 6 months. During my internship, the CEO helped me develop my knowledge about real estate and other aspects of the business. They also allocated time for me to gain a professional graphic design qualification, which I then used to make over 100 templates for them to use. The support from the Student Futures and Unitemps teams at LJMU was fantastic, helping students like me to find internships that add value to our careers.
Justin Josy International Business graduateI used the LJMU Student Futures Team; I had several meetings with the Careers and Employability Advisers to get help with applications for work experience. I did work experience in Liverpool at Radio City and BBC Radio Merseyside and I was also in the Student Union radio society at LJMU and had a weekly show on Looprevil student radio. It was great fun and a good way to learn the ropes of live radio. I now work as a video journalist for The Times and The Sunday Times specialising in politics so I am often out and about interviewing MPs or going to interesting places like Parliament, Downing Street or party conferences.

Marine and Offshore Engineering MSc graduate UTUBAKWU MICHAEL USHIE
tells us how he founded a global marine supply business with support from the Startup Hub. Utubakwu is founder and CEO of Prime Atlantic Ltd, based in Liverpool Science Park and supplying both equipment and tech solutions to the shipping industry.
WHAT DOES YOUR ORGANISATION DO?
Prime Atlantic Ltd offers solutions for shipping equipment from the UK to Nigeria and vice versa. The added value consists of reducing the procurement cycle by half, lowering the price and matching promises by actions.
HOW DID THE STARTUP HUB SUPPORT YOU?
“ The LJMU Startup Hub has been very instrumental to the success of Prime Atlantic Ltd., from before I graduated in 2020. We had training, then we started developing the business plan together. They have given us training, advice and guided us on how to go about the business aspect of things.
They have good referral programs to other schemes like Innovation UK, which had been part of our growth plan. Also they introduced us to the Port City Innovation Hub, which has been working with us closely. Overall I would say they have been remarkable in helping my business since the start and still today. ”
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT SETTING UP A BUSINESS?
“ Getting to understand how your clients feel about your business. It is the best feeling you want to have as a founder, understanding how you have been able to relieve the pain in their life.
As we keep developing solutions for our clients and they keep giving us feedback, I have come to understand that it is not about what we think of our solutions, but it is about what they actually think. And that is so far the best thing that has ever happened to me! ”
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN LIVERPOOL?
“There are so many things to say! One of them is the people and the heritage of Liverpool. They are accommodating and nice. Another thing is the support scheme in the Liverpool region for local businesses, which has a direct impact to our business and to us as entrepreneurs. Liverpool is a diverse cultural community, with people from all over the world. You don’t really feel that you are away from home, I can still get what I can get in Lagos here in Liverpool. ”
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO AN LJMU STUDENT THINKING OF STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
“ I want to say throw your heart over the fence, and the rest of your body will follow. It’s not an easy decision to start your own business, but the good thing is you don’t have to experience failure before you learn because you have all the support you need from the Startup Hub. Talk to people who have experience, you are not alone in this. There are some people who have gone through it.”

THE FACTS ABOUT WHAT YOUR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION WILL COST AND HOW YOU CAN PAY
n You are charged a tuition fee for every year of your course. Fees for 2024 have not been set yet. In 2023, LJMU fees were set at £9,250* per year for all full-time undergraduate degree programmes.
n You don’t have to pay tuition fees up front – subject to eligibility, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course. This is paid direct to the university.
n You can also take out a maintenance loan to help cover your living expenses such as rent and food. This loan is paid direct to you in three instalments.
n Dependent upon where you live in the UK, you may also qualify for grants for living costs too.
n You don’t start paying back your student loan until you have left university and are earning over the threshold. The current threshold is £25,000** for students from England and Wales and £19,390 for students from Northern Ireland and Scotland
n Your monthly repayments will be a percentage of your earnings and are not based on how much you borrowed from the Student Loans Company.
n You may also be eligible for additional funding that doesn’t have to be paid back, but this depends on your household income.
n LJMU offers a fantastic range of targeted support for students from lower income households plus scholarships for talented and academically gifted students.
n Targeted support is also available for students with disabilities, students with children or students who have been in care or are estranged from their families.
The amount of funding you can receive depends on where in the UK you normally live, your household income and if you will be living at home or in other accommodation while you study. For more information visit the following websites:

For more information: ljmu.ac.uk/scholarships
I was awarded the LJMU Community Excellence Scholarship based on my work with arts in the community. I used my videography skills to raise money for charity, making several fundraisers and generally got involved in as much community work within the arts as I could. Don’t hesitate to apply for a scholarship - it’s definitely made life easier, it gives you a safety net and just takes some of the pressure off.
Opportunity Scholarship
The aim of the Opportunity Scholarship is to enhance diversity, supporting access, participation and outcomes of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who come to LJMU. It would be expected that applicants have participated fully in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes to be eligible and applicants must meet the black and minority ethnic criteria to apply.
Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship
The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship has been introduced to recognise the diverse and inspiring nature of the LJMU student community. These high profile scholarships have been developed to reward the success of students that may have had a different and sometimes longer path into Higher Education or have overcome adversity in some way.

HOW TO APPLY
UCAS institution name: LJM UCAS institution code: L51
Applications for fulltime undergraduate courses
To apply to study on a full-time undergraduate course at LJMU you will need to submit an online application through UCAS. The ‘Apply’ service at ucas.com allows you to fill in your application anytime, anywhere (please note: there is an application fee for this service and deadlines apply).
You have the option of choosing five courses on your UCAS application. You can apply for just one course or use all five choices; you can also apply for more than one course at any institution.
Filling in your UCAS application form
When we consider your UCAS application, your ability to achieve the entry criteria is just one of the areas we take into account. An important part of the application form is your personal statement, which is your opportunity to tell us more about yourself. You should include your skills, relevant interests
and hobbies, along with why you want to study the course. Any work experience or voluntary work should be mentioned here, but don’t just state where and when, tell us about what you have learnt and what you enjoyed. We are looking for motivation, commitment and enthusiasm. This is your opportunity to convince us why you would like to study at LJMU.
Occasionally courses listed here may change throughout the year; new courses may become available or courses may be changed. Please check the UCAS website ucas.com and the LJMU website ljmu.ac.uk/courses which contain the most up-to-date listings.
If you need further help with filling in your UCAS form there are full instructions at ucas. com or you can contact UCAS directly by:

n Advanced Apprenticeships
n Irish Leaving Certificates
n International Baccalaureate
n Open University credits
n NVQ Level 3

Mature and non-standard applicants, such as care leavers or applicants returning to education, will be considered on an individual basis and may be asked to submit an essay and/ or attend an interview – contact the relevant admissions office for more information. As part of
LJMU’s commitment to widening access we offer eligible students entry to their chosen course at a reduced threshold of up to 16/8 UCAS points. This applies if you are a student who has been in local authority care or if you have participated in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach initiatives.
Minimum entry requirements
For all of our courses there will be a minimum UCAS Tariff score requirement. In addition, many courses will ask for specific subjects and grades at GCSE and/ or A level or equivalent. If a GCSE subject is required you will always need at least a grade C or grade 4.
The offer process
There are a number of offers that we can make you.
n An unconditional offerthis will be made if you already satisfy the entrance criteria (i.e. you may be a mature student or already have the results of your examinations).
n A conditional offer - this will be made if you have yet to sit your examinations, and you will be advised of the grades and other criteria we would like you to fulfil.
n A changed course offer - if we have read through your application form and think that
you would be best suited to a different course, we will contact you to offer you an alternative unconditional or conditional offer for another course. You do not have to accept this offer should you not wish to do so.
Applicant Day events
Once an offer has been made, we will invite you to a school-based Applicant Day, where you will have an opportunity to meet current staff and students, see the facilities in more detail, and find out about our student accommodation.
Making your Firm and Insurance choices
Once you have received decisions back from all your choices, you will be asked to decide which two offers you wish to accept. You will have to choose which you wish to make ‘Firm’ (your first choice) and which you wish to make ‘Insurance’ (your second choice).
UCAS Extra
If you have applied for all your five choices through UCAS but are not successful in gaining a place or you have declined all the offers you received, you will be eligible for UCAS Extra. UCAS Extra runs from February to July.
Receiving your results
You will automatically be accepted if you meet the requirements of your Conditional Firm (CF) offer with LJMU. If you do not attain the required grades, we may still accept you on your chosen programme or offer you an alternative programme. If your application is unsuccessful you will then be considered by your ‘Insurance’ choice.
Clearing
Clearing is an additional opportunity to get a place at university, starting a course in September 2024. If you are late to apply, or do not fulfil the conditions of your conditional or unconditional choices, you can then enter the Clearing process. During Clearing, you contact universities directly to establish if you can be accepted on to one of their courses. Clearing will take place during August, after exam results are released.
UCAS TARIFF POINTS GUIDE
What is a TYPICAL OFFER
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is achieved by passing each of the required components and achieving a total IB point score of 24 or more.
The IB Diploma does not attract UCAS Tariff points. However, the constituent qualifications of the IB Diploma do. The Tariff points for an IB Diploma can be calculated by adding together the Tariff points for each of its components. Note that the Creativity Action Service (CAS) component is not accredited and does not attract Tariff points.
If your qualification is not listed here please refer to the UCAS Tariff at: ucas.com
We are pleased to add the new T Levels to the suite of qualifications that we accept. The UCAS Tariff points allocated for each overall grade are as follows:

There’s lots of different ways for prospective students to ‘try out’ higher education at LJMU:
n Information, advice and guidance for students from all backgrounds
n Insightful university related presentations
n Subject taster sessions
n Free summer schools
If you are a teacher or careers adviser who would like to book a session for your students, get in touch: ljmu.ac.uk/outreach outreach@ljmu.ac.uk
These sessions are absolutely fantastic – out of all the universities that we work with, LJMU has put on the best online sessions for students. There is such a mix of content and the themes are very useful, particularly Harvard Referencing and EPQ. Thanks again!
