NI Applicant Day in Belfast

FOOD AND DRINK

Liverpool certainly has it all when it comes to food and drink. From specialist shops selling halal and kosher foods to the oldest Chinatown in Europe, you could munch your way through a whole world of cuisine and never have to eat the same dish twice! Home to cool cafés, world food supermarkets and excellent eateries to suit every taste and budget – you’re spoilt for choice. You can also take your pick of our many pubs, nightclubs, alcohol-free bars and coffee shops, where you can enjoy great conversation, music and much more.

SPORT

Whilst the city is known for its Premiere League pedigree, Liverpool is much more than the rivalry between red and blue. The city region is home to three football clubs, Liverpool FC, Everton FC and Tranmere Rovers, a top rugby league team, two horse racing tracks and is the golfing capital of England – boasting more than 40 courses, seven of which are leading championship venues. If watersports are your thing we have two watersports centres where you can get involved with rowing, surfing, windsailing and more. Skaters are spoiled for choice too with the street art covered skate park in Baltic Triangle, the glow in the dark ramp in Everton Park and the place all Liverpool skaters learned their tricks, Rampworx, just a bus ride away from the City Centre.

MUSIC

As the ‘world capital of pop’* and the birthplace of The Beatles, it comes as no surprise that a great music scene exists in this city. Every night of the week, every week of the year, there’s music to be heard all around Liverpool. Discover the city’s up-and-coming bands in live venues like LEAF and 24 Kitchen Street or find your favourite acts at Liverpool’s O2 Academy, Liverpool Guild of Students or Liverpool Olympia. There’s something to suit every taste, whether your playlists are full of hip-hop, electronic, jazz or rock’n’roll.

Liverpool has a buzzing festival scene: Sound City, Africa Oyé, Homotopia, Brazilica, Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and Positive Vibration Reggae Festival, and let’s not forget the city will be giving Eurovision delegates a typical warm Scouse welcome as we host the Song Contest in 2023.

SHOPPING

We are all shopping on a budget, but no matter if yours is large or small, you’ll find what you are looking for in Liverpool. From the high street stores and designer outlets in Liverpool One and Met Quarter, to the independent boutiques on Bold Street or markets in the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool is the place to go shopping. Cool and quirky vintage stores are the hidden gems of the city’s student areas.

Light Night Liverpool is an awesome city takeover offering breathtaking light shows, art installations and street performances, with latenight opening of our museums and galleries. World-renowned classic and contemporary art collections find their homes at the Walker Art Gallery, Tate Liverpool, Open Eye Gallery, FACT, Bluecoat and the Liverpool Biennial.

OUTDOOR SPACES

Whether you’re a wildlife watcher, a bit of a rambler, or are more likely to be found lounging on a lawn, Liverpool’s outdoor offering has it all.

With 10 listed parks and cemeteries, more than any other UK city outside of London, parks and waterfront walks in Liverpool are firm favorites. Sefton Park, Festival Gardens, Otterspool Promenade, Princes Park, Calderstones Park and Greenbank all offer perfect outdoor space within easy reach of the City Centre.

Head further north to explore the beaches at Crosby, Formby and Southport, or get acquainted with the animals at Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park.

GIVE YOUR SUPPORT ON OR OFF THE PITCH

Sports clubs need more than just the players – from managers to coaches, treasurers to social secretaries - and that’s just for starters! Volunteering within sport provides a great opportunity to take on additional responsibility and develop transferable skills all whilst supporting your teammates and making lifelong friends.

BE PART OF MORE THAN JUST A TEAM

Getting involved in sports at LJMU means more than being part of the team. On or off the field, there are so many ways to challenge yourself, meet people who share your interests, and feel more connected to your university community. The University has over 35 different Sports Clubs that you can join. Most clubs cater for a wide range of abilities and all welcome complete beginners. Take your game to the next level by joining one of our 50+ LJMU sports teams currently competing within British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). By joining one of the BUCS teams, you’ll be able to represent Team LJMU playing competitive sport against other universities across the country. If something more casual is your thing, our ‘Play Sport’ programme does exactly what it says on the tin… just turn up and play sport! There is no membership, no commitment, you are not in a league and all you need to do is come and have fun, keep fit and make friends. Can’t see a sport that takes your fancy? Why not start your own! Remember: you can join a sports club even if you have no previous experience of playing the sport. We’re all about trying something new. So go on, give it a go! You never know, you might uncover a hidden talent, achieve your personal best or help lift your team’s trophy.
