WHAT DO WE DO? Over the course of 6 years, Meeting of the Minds has become the premier leadership summit for sustainable cities. An invitation-only conference, Meeting of the Minds brings together more than 250+ opinion-shapers, policy-makers, leading thinkers and innovators from every sector. The conference is two-plus days of intensive exchange for leaders creating more sustainable cities using smarter design tools, sounder environmental practices, and cleaner energy systems. Among the dozens of international leaders who speak at Meeting of the Minds are innovators scaling-up practical urban innovation in infrastructure, design, technology, energy, transport, water, finance; all are building more livable cities. At Meeting of the Minds, leaders from multiple sectors and diverse geographies share ideas and shape a common agenda. Meeting of the Minds was conceived by Gordon Feller of Urban Age Institute in San Rafael, California.

BIOGRAPHIES JAMES ANDERSON

VICE PRESIDENT SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC INFRASTRUCTURE BUSINESSES ETC. Jim has over 33 years of experience in the Electrical Industry, with his last 20 years spent working at Schneider Electric. Prior to his current role, Jim held a project in Grenoble France where he was Director for Low Voltage Power Devices and was responsible for global strategy and product developments. In addition Jim has held many different positions in product management with increasing levels of responsibility across the field. Jim began his career prior to joining Schneider Electric, with General Electric Co on the Technical Marketing Program.

ALEXA ARENA SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOREST CITY Alexa Arena leads Forest City’s Northern California Team as the head of the SF office. Ms. Arena was the developer on the recently completed Presidio Landmark. Presently Ms. Arena is working on the redevelopment of approximately 4-acres in downtown San Francisco in partnership with the land owner, the Hearst Corporation. Referred to as the 5M Project, the Project is a pioneering model for both conceptualizing and fostering communities that serve our innovation economy. It reframes real estate as a tool for the creative process and uses a series of unique techniques to instigate demand and establish place as a platform for innovation.

STORY BELLOWS CO-DIRECTOR OF THE MAYORS OFFICE: NEW URBAN MECHANICS CITY OF PHILADELPHIA Story Bellows joined the City of Philadelphia in April of 2012 as Co-Director of the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics. The new office is a civic idea and innovation incubator, which develops innovative approaches to solving complex problems in the public arena. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, Story served as Director of the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, a leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the American Architectural Foundation and the US Conference of Mayors.

BAS BOORSMA GLOBAL LEAD CISCO’S WORK LIFE INNOVATIONS PROGRAM Bas Boorsma currently serves as an urban innovations specialist and director of the Internet Business Solutions Group, Cisco’s strategic global consultancy arm. Bas has coordinated the implementation of Urban Innovations projects that address the ways we work, live, consume learn and deliver – and how it can be changed for communities to become more resilient – environmentally, socially and economically. Typical urban innovations delivered include Smart Work Centers, Community Services Platforms, Ecomap and the Personal Travel Assistant.

HOPE COHEN

EXPERT OVER 35 YEARS IN THE FIELD OF URBAN CITIES

DIRECTOR REGIONAL PLAN ASSOCIATIONS NEW YORK PROGRAM

Tim Cambell has worked 35+ years in urban development with experience in scores of countries and hundreds of cities in Latin America, South and East Asia, East Europe, and Africa. His areas of expertise include strategic urban planning, city development strategies, decentralization, urban policy and social policy and povery impact of urban development. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from U. C. Berkeley (1966), a Masters in City and Regional Planning from U.C. Berkeley (1970), and a Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Planning from M.I.T. (1980).

Before coming to RPA, Cohen was Deputy Director of the Manhattan Institute’s Center for Rethinking Development, where she focused on issues of zoning, development, transportation, and urban environment and infrastructure, publishing Rethinking Environmental Reviewand, The Neighborly Substation, in which she analyzed New York’s zoning restrictions along with international examples of siting and urban design of electrical substations.

KAREN CHAPPELE

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF REGIONAL PLANNING UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Ms. Chapple specializes in housing, community and economic development. Karen has recently published numerous studies on regional economic resilience (in Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy, and Society), innovation in the green economy (in Economic Development Quarterly), and the failure of poverty dispersal policies (in Housing Policy Debate). Her current book project is on integrating economic development into regional sustainability planning.

VICTOR D’ALLANT CEO DALLANT.NETWORKS Victor has previously served as CEO/Managing Director in both the private sector and the non-profit space, and has consulted for the World Health Ode4 rganization (WHO), the World Bank, Newsweek, Bloomberg and Wired. Victor started his career as a photojournalist and his photographs have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. The video blog he produced for Social Edge, the Skoll Foundation’s online community, received an Honoree Mention at the Webby Awards (Webbies). Victor holds an MA in social anthropology from the Sorbonne and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. His motto: “Right brain? Left brain? Why choose!”

Davidson served as Deputy General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and practiced in the real estate and finance department at the firm of Latham & Watkins. Davidson earned his A.B. from Harvard College and his J.D. from Columbia Law School. After law school, he clerked for Judge David S. Tatel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and Justice David H. Souter of the Supreme Court of the United States.

NIELS VAN DUINEN DIRECTOR OF OUTDOOR LIGHTING PHILLIPS LIGHTING Niels came to the United States in 2008 with Philips’ acquisition of the company, Genlyte. Niels started in the role of PostMerger and Integration Marketing Manager with a focus on connecting and enabling a multi-cultural and interregional marketing network while realizing post-merger business objectives. As chairman of Philips’ Global (LED) Portfolio Team, he drives the LED technology transition within an international network of Philips Professional Luminaires companies. Before his assignments in the US, Niels held the position of Philips’ National Director of Marketing Professional Lighting in Paris, France, implementing a customer value driven marketing process around business segments and customer clusters.

Cisco’s IBSG is a recognized advisor to many of the world’s leading companies and governments on strategy, technology innovation and marketing development. Specifically, Mr. Frazier is a technology executive with 20+ years in the international business community with a background in international business, distinguished public service, global public policy and innovation focus on the public markets.

MARK GILBREATH FOUNDER AND CEO LIQUIDSPACE LiquidSpace supports corporations of all sizes, seeking to improve the productivity of their mobile workforce, increase the efficiency of their real estate portfolio, and bring measurability to their sustainability initiatives. He is an experienced serial entrepreneur and one of the new voices in real estate technology , supporting a vision of sustainable, mobile business practices. Mark has spent 25+ years in the technology industry with Wyle Electronics, Trinity Technologies, Altera, Toolwire in roles ranging from design engineer to startup CEO. For the past 6 years Mark has been focused on the massive opportunityfacing the commercial real estate industry and the planet as a whole – the consumerization of real estate.

In his role at Qualcomm, Matt is responsible for the oversight of the company’s technical path, the coordination of R&D activities across the company and the development of next-generation wireless technologies. Grob also leads Corporate R&D and provides oversight to Qualcomm Corporate Engineering Services.

At Qualcomm, Paul has served as project leader on numerous product and business development projects including establishing Qualcomm’s first business operations in Europe providing fleet management services to the transportation industry, the development and deployment of the first application of Qualcomm’s wireless technology in the healthcare industry, and numerous projects that have helped to establish the Company’s business within the automobile industry where Qualcomm is now the leading supplier of wireless modem chipsets for telematics and connnected car services.

DR. COLIN HARRISON ENGINEER & INVENTOR IBM’S SMARTER CITIES ARCHITECHTURE Dr. Harrison spent 1972 - 1977 at CERN developing the SPS accelerator and its distributed, realtime controller system. In 1977 at EMI Central Research Laboratories he led development of the first clinical MRI system. At IBM since 1979 he has worked on micromagnetics, medical imaging, parallel computing, mobile computing, intelligent agents, telecommunications, knowledge management, and Smarter Cities. He studied at Imperial College and University of Munich, earning a PhD in Materials Science. He is Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Senior Member of the Institution of Electronic and Electrical Engineers and Founder Member of the Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. He is Expert Advisor to the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences and has been Visiting Scientist at MIT, Harvard Medical School, and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. He has published some 60 articles.

RICK HUTCHINSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER CITY CARSHARE With an emphasis on the development of market-directed and purpose-based organizations, Rick has led three companies and consulted in a range of industries and specialties. Currently, Rick is responsible for all aspects of the City CarShare organization, including strategic direction, operational functions and organizational development. He also serves on the Board of Directors of City CarShare. Under Rick’s direction, City CarShare has enhanced operations and expanded the range and scope of the organization, achieving operational sustainability and solidifying its position as the largest nonprofit carsharing organization in North America.

BIOGRAPHIES LEILA JANAH

FOUNDER & CEO SAMASOURCE Leila Janah is the main founder of Samasource, an awardwinning social business center that connects many people living in poverty to microwork: small, computer-based tasks that build skills and generate life-changing income. She serves on the boards of OneLeap and TechSoup Globaland as an advisor to mobile shopping app RevelTouch. Prior to Samasource, Janah was a Visiting Scholar with the Stanford Program on Global Justice and Australian National University’s Center for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics.

MIKEL MARON FOUNDER MAP KIBERA He is co-founder of Ground Truth Initiative, and of the Map Kibera project. He’s on the Board of the OpenStreetMap Foundation and the President of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, having helped to facilitate the OSM response to the Haiti earthquake. He’s travelled widely, organizing projects in India, Palestine, Egypt, Swaziland, and elsewhere. Previously to this, he co-founded Mapufacture and worked on collaborative platforms, geoweb standards, and various applications, with a wide spectrum of organizations from UN and government agencies to anarchist hacker collectives.

JULIETTE MICHAELSON DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC INITIATIVES REGIONAL PLAN ASSC. She is currently focused on a largescale effort to build an active network of transit agency chief executives from all around the world. The goal is to provide these executives with the opportunity to discuss shared challenges and opportunities, both in person at annual Summits and on an on-going basis via other communication methods. Juliette is the author of a landmark RPA report that quantified how much home values near train stations benefit from improved transit service. The report is still quoted to make the case for building dense nodes of development around train stations.

From Vancouver to Chicago to London, Mark Norman is responsible for the major worldwide operations of Zipcar. Mark joined Zipcar following its merger with Flexcar in the fall of 2007. He came to us with more than 20 years of executive experience in the automotive industry, including roles as CEO of Flexcar, and Chairman, President and CEO of DaimlerChrysler, Canada.

DIRECTOR NATIONAL FUEL CELL RESEARCH CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF IRVINE

Nutter serves as the director for the San Francisco Government’s Department of the Environment. She joined SFE after working as the deputy district director for Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House. Prior to this position, she was the executive director of the San Francisco Democratic Party from 2003-2005 and was the principal of Nutter Consulting, a San Francisco based consulting firm that helps nonprofits and political organizations to raise funds, organize events, manage campaigns and recruit new supporters. Nutter has over sixteen years experience in nonprofit fundraising, events management, grassroots organizing and media relations. As a principal for Nutter Consulting, she consulted for many organizations including Music for America and SEIU Local 250.

MANEL SANROMA

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOREST CITY Manel SanromĂ (Tarragona 1956) is currently the Chief Information Officer of Barcelona City Council and a Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. He has occupied several positions in research and management in different Catalan Universities and both Local and Regional Administrations. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics, a Masters degree in IT and a Bachelors degree in Humanities.

Scott Samuelson directs the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) at the University of California Irvine, is a Professor of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Environmental Engineering, and a Henry Samueli Endowed Chair. He teaches courses in thermodynamics and in the energy and thermal sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advises or co-advises the research of thirty graduate students and ten undergraduate student researchers, and is responsible for twenty professional administrative and research staff.

SUSAN SHAHEEN

DIRECTOR TRANSPORTATION SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF BERKELEY Susan is an internationally recognized leader in shared-use vehicle research and has 17+ years of experience on this topic. Her main work in this area includes carsharing, personal vehicle sharing, public bikesharing, ridesharing, and smart parking management. She has a Ph.D. in ecology, focusing on the energy and environmental aspects of transportation, from UC Davis and an M.S. in public policy analysis from the University of Rochester.

DR. PETER WELLS

DIRECTOR SEATTLE OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT

CHAIRMAN NETFLEX PETROLEUM CONSULTANTS

Prior to becoming director, Jill served as OSE’s climate protection program manager, working to implement the Seattle Climate Protection Initiative and overseeing completion of the City’s greenhouse gas inventories. Before coming to OSE, Jill worked in the City’s Finance Department as a fiscal and policy analyst. Jill has also worked on community development and sustainability initiatives as an associate program officer at the Northwest Area Foundation. Jill holds a Law Degree and Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Washington.

Dr. Peter Wells is an acclaimed international oil and gas expert with over 30 years of technical aswell as business experience, including at senior levels with major oil companies such as Shell and BP. Dr. Wells is Chairman of the UK-based geological consulting company Neftex Petroleum Consultants. He is also an advisor to Toyota Motor Company on world oil and gas supply and Middle East affairs.

EGON TERPLAN REGIONAL PLANNING SPUR A regional planner and economic development specialist with more than 14 year of experience, he has authored numerous reports and policy studies related to regional planning, economic development, transportation and government reform, including the first-ever report on the Northern California megaregion and a 2011 report on land use planning and high-speed rail in California. Prior to joining SPUR, Egon spent more than five years with ICF International advising cities and regions throughout the world on economic development and competitiveness.

SUSAN ZIELINSKI DIRECTOR SMART, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SMART is a multidisciplinary, university-wide initiative of UMTRI and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. SMART takes a systems approach to addressing the emerging challenges and opportunities of integrated and sustainable transportation in a rapidly urbanizing world, undertaking implementation-focused research. Before joining SMART, Susan spent a year as a Harvard Loeb Fellow focusing on New Mobility innovation and leadership. Before 2004, while at the City of Toronto she cofounded and directed Moving the Economy, a Toronto-based link tank developed to catalyze and support sustainable urban transportation innovation and New Mobility industry development.

MANAGING DIRECTOR MEETING OF THE MINDS

Gordon Feller is the Co-founder and Convenor of Meeting of the Minds and Director of Urban Innovation within Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group in the Public Sector Practice. Feller works with corporate and city leaders worldwide. In this capacity, he supports Cisco’s numerous China initiatives, while simultaneously leading Cisco’s new City Leader Program for Chinese mayors and city-based party secretaries. Feller is also a regular contributor to Cisco’s blog. Prior to joining Cisco IBSG, Feller was CEO of the Urban Age Institute, an international research organization which began as a magazine inside the World Bank and was spun off ten years later, in 2001. For nearly 30 years, Feller has advised on urban development issues with leaders of multinational companies, cities, NGOs / foundations, and national governments. His clients have included the World Bank, the United Nations, German and Canadian national governments, The Rockefeller Foundation, IBM, Reuters, Metropolis, and United Cities; Local Governments.

Jessie has been the Director of Meeting of the Minds since 2010. She is also a Senior Planner at Regional Plan Association where she launched the regional energy policy program in 2010. She specializes in urban-regional policy and planning, with a particular focus on sustainability and clean energy. She has written numerous articles which have been featured in RPA’s Spotlight on the Region, The Hartford Courant, Urban Age Magazine, The Record, NPR, among others. Previous to RPA, she worked as a cluster specialist at Economic Competitiveness Group, as a Sustainability Fellow at the Portland Development Commission, and started her career at SMWM (now Perkins + Will). Jessie holds a BA from Vassar College in Urban Studies and Hispanic Studies (Phi Beta Kappa) and a Masters in Environment and Development Studies (honors) from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
