INTRODUCTION
so I’d like to give you a little insight into who I am. Ya’at’eeh! (That means hello in Navajo.) I am Granddaughter Crow, also known as Dr. Joy Gray. The traditional way to introduce myself in Navajo is to tell you what clan I am born “to” (mother’s clan) and what clan I am born “for” (father’s clan). I am born to the Biligaana clan and born for the Tachii’nii clan. In short, another Navajo would recognize that my mother is Caucasian, and my father is full-blood Navajo. With that being said, I am a bridge between two cultures. As such, I have found that respecting each culture and its traditions is very important. Hence, when I am referencing something from my Navajo culture, I will let you know. When I was born, it was said by the elders that I was “born with a calling.” Being “born with a calling” is a way to say that an individual has a special gift that will assist others in a positive way. I have always thought differently than my peers. Not only did I feel different than most, but others often pointed it out
