SEPTEMBER 2010
VOL 1 ISSSUE 01
Lights & Lens Hello peers Welcome to the first copy of Lights&Lens, a free photography community magazine, by photo enthusiasts, for photo enthusiasts! The idea of running a magazine has long been pondering at the back of my head, but never found a right opportune moment to come out until now. But thanks to Mr.Sandeep Rao and Mr.Sooraj Shajahan (who absolutely did not a single work in this mag) we decided to take up this brave initiative into the wild! ;) Lights&Lens [LL], being a free amateur community magazine, will feature your best photography works, a few articles on DIY photography, fun snippets, Photo Critique, competitions and contests, and details on any upcoming workshops, events or promotions. The ultimate aim is to share and learn, while showcasing our work to thousands around! There’s a whole lot of plans coming up for the magazine so if you’ve got some nice ideas on mind, do mail them in and we’ll get in touch with you. As of yet, we have decided to keep this as an Online-only version due to budget constraints ;-) The magazine will be available in downloadable PDF format at my personal blog page, Orkut communities and other partner sites.
Some Good news! I have had talks with some professional photographers for contributing to the Photo Critique section, and with Digital Photography, an independent student run magazine, that has agreed to host competitions with actual prizes for our readers! we’ll keep you updated on this.
If you hated this magazine, send us your critique and tips to improvise. If you loved this as much as we did making it, Do spread the word! - Madz

This was Lights & Lens’ first month of launch, and we already received more than a 100 different submissions! It was difficult for us to pick out the ones to be featured for this month’s magazine, but in the end, we did pick two images from each of the contributors. Some images were outstanding, some, simply surreal! I’ve tried to include as much as possible, but for those who got missed out, our apologies for the same, rest assured, we’ll feature you in the upcoming issues. As said earlier, i would like to remind you that when sending in images, please include the EXIF data, as most, simply did not, hence invariably we were unable to feature them here despite them being some strong images. Without much further talk, here they are!
Send us your Best shots!! Each month, L&L will showcase 10 pages of reader submitted photography! To make sure you dont get left out, send us your images!

Photographer speaks A harsh tiring day... A bitchy meeting which goes inconclusive all day... Uncertain future. A spark after late dinner to get ready tomorrow´s ordeal I step out late in the night to gather my breath taking solace from my lens after a long time. Reluctant to go out with tiredness sweeping over me like a dark cloud over a rainy day, I walked into a music performance in the open area with the usual loud brashness of the modern commercial art with equally harsh crowd with loud demeanor. I was sandwiched in between the loudness all around. Suddenly like a message from above, my lens fell on this man, lost in his own world ignoring the colourful singers, loud non committed crowd enjoying what he did. That was the message I needed & went back a refreshed man, equipped to take the harshest battle tomorrow...

Special Mention
Zapped...
I felt this picture deserves a special mention, as this conveys a deep sense of emotion that the photographer had while taking his shot. His actual writing is on the right... Mr.Bir, I like! -Madz
Hello, My Photo namely “Zapped” reflects the daily working class common man’s situation. It pains to see how badly they get affected during the summer time over work. The hands of the person featured in my photo, with blisters in his hand, resembles a post-nuclear victim. He is just about 18 years old, more or less our age, but works to support his family as he’s quite old. He is the sole breadwinner for the whole family being the only male candidate of his generation. They don’t go to doctors, they say... this is the time when a boy becomes man! They do have few Ayurveda medicine which they claim, will soothe him in just about 48 hours. So that’s the story behind my photo... - Birabrata Das
