City widely endorsed as tourist destination: survey by Josef Jacobson josef@lloydminstersource.com

Sept. 8 was the first day of classes at Lakeland College and students started their day with a pancake breakfast served in the school’s cafeteria. The event was sponsored by ATB Financial.

Raising suicide awareness by Josef Jacobson josef@lloydminstersource.com

At city council’s Sept. 8 meeting Mayor Rob Saunders proclaimed Sept. 10 to be World Suicide Prevention Day in Lloydminster. “Nearly one million people worldwide die by suicide every year. This corresponds to one death by suicide every 40 seconds,” said Saunders, reading the proclamation. “Alberta has one of the highest suicide rates in Canada. In Alberta, more people die by suicide than by motor vehicle accidents. World Suicide Prevention Day is an ideal time to inspire people to work towards the goal of developing new methods for ending stigma and preventing suicide.” World Suicide Prevention Day is co-sponsored by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization. This year’s theme is “Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives.” See “Awareness,” Page 14

At city council’s Sept. 8 meeting, Mayor Rob Saunders proclaimed Sept. 10 to be World Suicide Prevention Day in Lloydminster. Making remarks were Neil Harris, a local co-ordinator for Alberta Health Services’ Men at Risk Program, and Walking Through Grief Society facilitator Shirley Scott.

According to a new survey by Lloydminster Tourism, Lloydminster residents overwhelmingly recommend the Border City as a travel destination, but have trouble finding resources when it comes to planning activities for their guests. The survey was open throughout the summer, kicking off during the Colonial Days parade on July 8. Lloydminster tourism was hoping to receive 200 fully completed questionnaires but ended up exceeding expectations with a total of 254 surveys. “We were really thrilled with the comments section on the survey,” said Katlin Ducherer, manager of event and business development with the Lloydminster Economic Development Corporation, which oversaw the survey. “We’re really happy with how people thoroughly filled them out and the quality of the answers.” The survey found that 79 per cent of respondents recommend Lloydminster as a place to visit and 43 per cent of respondents had family and friends visiting during the past year, with over 70 per cent of those guests coming from either Alberta or Saskatchewan. Seventy-nine per cent of the time the visitors stayed with the host and only 31 per cent of time did the guests eat out on more than three occasions. The most popular attractions were Bud Miller All Seasons Park, shopping and followed by exploring the city. “One of the things that was very prevalent in all the surveys was that Bud Miller (park) was something that people don’t necessarily have in their own communities and that when they come here their friends and relatives who are hosting the always take them there,” Ducherer said.

MS Walk receives final yearly donation by Jaime Polmateer jaime@lloydminstersource.com

Local ambassadors for multiple sclerosis, Gail and Barry Taylor, donated a cheque to the Lloydminster Jayman Built MS Walk on Sept. 8, marking the last donation for this year’s campaign. The $25,000 donation, raised though the Taylors’ fifth annual Golf Fore MS event, brought the walk’s total funds raised to over $188,000. “To put things into context, last year we had a record year raising over $200,000. I think we’re all aware of the economic realities that have hit this community pretty hard this year and when you consider $188,000, it’s a pretty short distance between this year and last year’s record,” said Johanna Green, Lakeland regional director for the MS Society of Canada. “It’s a pretty phenomenal accomplishment for this community in spite of all of the challenges that we know people have faced.” Gail Taylor says funds raised at the golf tournament were down around $12,000 from last year, also due to the current western economy, and with all things considered she was pleasantly surprised by the turn out. Taylor started the Golf Fore MS tournament five years ago as a one-off event to help raise money for the MS walk, and due to the success of the event, has been hosting it annually ever since. “I mentioned that we should put on a golf tournament and my husband thought I was crazy. It was going to be a one time thing, and I have MS, and I thought it would just

help out with the walk team to raise money,” said Gail. “After the first one everybody said, ‘Well, we’re on for next year.’ And now we’re getting ready for the sixth (one) next year.” The 2015 tournament took place on June 20 and saw 72 golfers tough it out through a morning of pouring rain to help with the cause. Gail says she and her husband would like to thank all of the golfers who participated, the sponsors, and all of the volunteers who helped the event be a success. The Lloydminster MS Society also took the opportunity to introduce Green’s replacement, Lacey Flichel, who will be assuming the role of Lloydminster chapter manager and be responsible as head of fundraising and administration, as Green will become the director of the northern region. This will be Flichel’s first time working with the society and she says she is excited to take on the new job. “I have a couple personal ties with MS, friends of the family,” she said. “But I (also) have a passion for helping others and I think that working with the MS Society, I’ll be able to fill that need.” Flichel is a former recreational therapist who worked as a recreation manager at a long-term care centre in Edmonton and says she is now excited to put in the time and see her efforts make a difference in people’s lives in Lloydminster. Green will still take on regional responsibilities and what was previously called the Lakeland region will be absorbed into the bigger northern region for the MS Society.

In terms of criticism, visitors disliked the traffic and stated that there was “not much to do.” Drawing attention to attractions is where Lloydminster Tourism comes in. Over 81 per cent of respondents said they relied on word of mouth when planning their trip, with only a third of respondents reporting that they are aware of and use www.lloydminstertourism.ca as a trip planning tool. Respondents also suggested increased advertising and more festivals and events would be the most effective ways to bring more tourists to the Border City. “The overall point of the survey was basically we wanted to see how our current marketing was doing, how we were currently reaching out to visitors and what we could change,” Ducherer said. One of those immediate changes was setting up a Facebook page to post tourist information and events. Ducherer says Lloydminster Tourism invites residents to suggest events to publicize on the social media site. “We just really wanted to know how to communicate better (with) our potential visitors,” she said. Lloydminster Tourism will hold another similar survey in the future. But next time, Ducherer says she wants to hear from the guests themselves. “Next year we’re going to do something a little bit different,” she said. “We’ll have points hopefully at the hotels, at the restaurants and all those hotspots and events where we’re actually surveying the visitors directly.”

Bringing live music into the home by Josef Jacobson josef@lloydminstersource.com

Lloydminster resident Rhonda Burns is getting the chance to enjoy live music from the comfort of her own living room, and she’s inviting the rest of the community to join her. “What we do is we have six concerts a year and I put them up in our house, we give them a place to sleep and we feed them and they

perform a concert in our home,” she said. The concerts are organized by Home Routes, a non-profit arts organization based out of Winnipeg. Its mission is to promote folk music and “expand the performance infrastructure for folk music,” making it available across Canada, even in smaller communities. This is done through establishing folk clubs, festivals and travelling performance

Thank You

The Frenchman Butte Museum Society Inc. would like to thank EVERYONE for their generous donations and support towards our Annual Frenchman Butte Museum Festival held on August 9, 2015. A special “Thank You” also to the many entertainers, demonstrators, volunteers and individuals who contributed to make that day an outstanding success.

Home Routes project turns local living room into intimate music venue circuits. Two months ago Burns heard that Home Routes was looking for a Lloydminster host, so she contacted the organization to become a stop on the tour. She says there used to be a couple in the area who hosted the Home Routes concerts, but this will be the first time the shows will be held within the city. “Both my husband and I love live music and we just thought, we like going to festivals, and we like the smaller kinds of festivals; they’re more personal that way,” she said. “So with these small concerts you only have 30, maybe 40 people tops. So I just thought it’s a nicer way of getting to know the artist and getting to know some of the people in your community.” Burns’ home is part of Chautauqua Trail Circuit, which covers Alberta and Saskatchewan from Edmonton to Prince Albert, going as far north as Fort McMurray and as far south as Outlook, Sask. The shows run from

September to April. Since starting in 2007, Homes Routes now includes 14 touring circuits in nearly every province and territory and the group says it has entertained more than 23,000 audience members this past performance season. Burns’ first concert is on Sept. 20, when she welcomes Manitoban singers Keith Dyck and Dwayne Dueck into her home. She says she hopes to fill her living room with live music fans who find the concept of a house concert as interesting and exciting as she does. “I’m crossing my fingers that we will actually get 30 people to come to our house for this concert,” she said. “I’ve never been to a house concert either. (It’s an) absolutely new experience for me.” Those interested in attending may call 780-872-1478 for more information and tickets. Admission is $20 and a season pass costs $102.

Producers hope for warmer weather by Colin Budd colin@lloydminstersource.com

Producers across Saskatchewan will be looking forward to the warmer temperatures in the latter part of this week after weekend rain and cool weather put harvest to a momentary halt. According to Environment Canada, nearly 54 millimetres of rain fell locally, beginning on Saturday and ending Monday. In other parts of the province like Estevan, more than 125 mm was reported. “Certainly harvest will be set back. Hopefully not by too many days, for the majority of producers hopefully they’re back in the field later this week,” said Shannon Friesen, a regional crops specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture. The weather put a stop to a harvest that had been well ahead of the five-year average. According to the latest Saskatchewan Weekly Crop Report, 29 per cent of the crop was in the bin across Saskatchewan with another 30 per cent ready to straightcut or swathed. The five-year average for this time of year is 14 per cent combined and 26 per cent swathed or ready to straightcut. Last year, just seven per cent had been harvested. In the northwestern region, 13 per cent of the crop had been combined. “Certainly, we’ve had many drawn-out harvests recently, but it’s not that surprising considering we were able to get into the fields earlier this year,” said Friesen. “And then due to the lack of moisture, a lot of those crops ripened very, very

quickly.” Producers in the southwest region are the most advanced in the province with 51 per cent completed. The lack of rainfall earlier in the growing season doesn’t seem to have hurt the crops. Across the province, producers are reporting average grades and yields and that is true locally as well. “Things last week anyway were certainly better than we expected,” said Friesen. “Even a month or two ago and with the hot, dry days and things ripening quickly, I don’t think many producers expected to even pull off much from their fields. So in most cases, we’ve been pleasantly surprised, it’s been better than we have expected. Of course, there is always those areas where things aren’t doing as great.” There are some areas of concern, however. Producers have reported lower-than-expected pulse yields and harvest in some areas has been difficult with crops not ripening evenly and there are new flushes of weeds emerging. There is also the threat of frost as the calendar moves into the middle part of the September and with Environment Canada reporting a low of 2.9 C on Sept. 4, it’s something that eyes will be kept on. Sask. Agriculture is reporting that light frost reported a few weeks ago has damaged some late-seeded canola in this area. “We are about a week away from our typical 30-year frost average,” said Friesen. “Frost in September is never something we like, especially this early, but we’ve been lucky that

Shutterstock Photo

the crops have advanced rather quickly. So the majority of crops won’t be impacted by this, but of course any later-seeded canola may have some problems if it gets cold enough out there.” Hay crops The lack of moisture hit hay crops this year as well, with yields down across the province. In this region, pasture conditions are rated as 41 per cent good, 41 per cent fair, 15 per cent poor and three per cent very poor. It is estimated that eight per cent of forage crops

did not get cut or baled, mainly due to lack of growth. It’s a trend that was seen across the board, according to Friesen. “In some cases producers indicated that yields were one third or even one quarter of what they typically would expect. And, of course, most of that can be traced back to the lack of moisture,” Friesen said. “Some of that has improved because of the rains – the pastures have greened up and a lot of producers have been able to take a second cut. But certainly we are still dealing with shortages in some areas of the province.”

Project helps new filmmakers by Jaime Polmateer jaime@lloydminstersource.com

Telus’ funding program for film creators, Story Hive, has announced its new Digital Shorts edition, which will give funding to emerging filmmakers, artists, writers, directors and performers in Alberta and British Columbia. “What we want to do is make funding video projects more engaging and involve the community. How it works is creators and filmmakers upload their ideas for short films to storyhive.com and the community, so the users, they decided what project should get funding together with a jury,” said Jonas Woost, senior digital strategist for Telus. “Once the decision has been made we give the different projects their funding and actually go ahead and make those top films. We’ve really invested in the communities where we are. We give a lot of funding to different projects and we really want to make sure that we do that in a way that is engaging and involves the entire community and to keep it fun as well.” The top 30 projects submitted will get $10,000 each to bring their ideas to life and will also compete for one of two top prizes, which will see them get customized training and a visit to the Banff Television Festival. Everyone in Alberta and B.C. is eligible to take part with no previous film experience required.

Woost says they are also keen to hear from creators outside of the bigger cities, adding that it’s the smaller communities that have great stories to tell. “It’s communities like (Lloydminster) that we want to make sure are part of this,” he said. Telus wants to involve all filmmakers in the Digital Shorts edition, encouraging projects that span all genres, including ideas that don’t necessarily follow traditional or mainstream storytelling methods. Everything from documentary, comedy, drama, dance and art pieces are welcome with the submission period extending to Oct. 11. The winner from a previous short film edition, Olaf Blomerus, had his project, Hello World, go on to win three Alberta Film and Television awards for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematographer (drama under 30 minutes) and Best Score. Woost says having filmmakers go on to advance their craft is the main objective for Story Hive. “We really see Story Hive as kind of an incubator. You don’t have to be an emerging filmmaker but typically what we get are emerging filmmakers taking part in Story Hive and what we want to do is for that to be a step to do other things,” he said. “That’s really the whole point of it, to allow these filmmakers to get to the next step in their career.” Those interested can apply at www.storyhive. Financial snapshot is troubling

Opinion by Colin Budd colin@lloydminstersource.com

As the federal election campaign continues its 11-week journey, the promises keep coming. This week, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair promised to boost the aerospace industry while Liberal Leader pledged new funding for affordable housing. Conservative Leader Stephen Harper announced he was planning to increase grants for education savings. All well and good, and I’m sure the people it impacts will be happy if these promises come to fruition. I often think about the campaign promises that are talking points on any given day and with the length of time since everyone hit the trail, there seems to be an increase in them. But how will any of it actually impact the average voter? According to a news release on Tuesday, manyof those average voters are struggling financially. While we hear about plans on EI premiums and support for unions, there is a reality that the people of this country are living in. Forget retirement, the National Payroll Week Research Survey, conducted by the Canadian Payroll Association, found that 48 per cent of respondents would find it difficult to meet their financial obligations if their paycheque was delayed by a single week. “Illustrating just how strapped some employees are, 24 per cent report that they probably could not come up with $2,000 if an emergency arose within the next month,” the news release said. “Over one-third of working Canadians feel

overwhelmed by their level of debt (36 per cent) and 12 (per cent) of employees say they are not sure they’ll ever be debt free.” That seems sort of bleak. It’s maybe something I am missing so far in this campaign because there are so many moving parts at this point. After all, we are on Day 4 of the Syrian migration crisis completely dominating the headlines. And after that, I am sure there will be something else. Not that they aren’t vital issues, but the focus on how to improve the lives of the average employee in this country is something that hasn’t seemed to be at the forefront enough other than a handful of vague promises about the “middle class” and tax cuts – which is always under dispute from opposition critics. Even though it was looking to be a focal point if you believed the pundits. That isn’t to say employees are completely ignored, but you can’t help but take a view that with so many struggling towards retirement it’s just going to lead to further strain on Ottawa’s finances down the road. It’s not strictly a government issue, of course. If the outlook is going to improve, the private sector will play its part and each individual will bear the responsibility of their own saving and financial planning. Still, it’s something to keep an eye on as we continue to be bombarded with messages over the next six weeks and in light of these statistics. While the leaders will all speak about looking out for the average Canadian, it becomes difficult not to be pulled in a million directions. And that’s all part of the process. But with 48 per cent of people 50 and older still less than a quarter of the way to their retirement savings goal something very real will need to be done sooner than later. No one should rely on the government to put themselves in a better position financially, but being updated on which potential policies could assist this situation could be beneficial.

Basic income program would reduce poverty

To the editor, The Saskatchewan Green Party endorses the Advisory Group on Poverty Reduction’s call for a basic income program to help cut poverty rates in half in our province by 2020. Our party’s 2016 election platform calls for a basic income program for all Saskatchewan residents. Party Leader Victor Lau says the advisory group is suggesting real change for all Saskatchewan people. Saskatchewan is long overdue for a basic income program, which would not only raise the standard of

living of everyone in the province, but also reduce some costs to government services. Now we would like to see a basic income model put forward soon. In order for a basic income program to work, it will be important to ensure that nobody in the province is left out of it. Real change for Saskatchewan people means real but practical programs that solve problems for the long run. – Victor Lau, Leader Saskatchewan Green Party

AECOM helps Big Brothers Big Sisters

a look at our community’s volunteers

In July 2015, AECOM’s Fluid Services Lloydminster Operation brought up a great idea to help kids in need. The idea was to conduct a “Stuff the Bus Campaign” for kids’ school supplies. With an idea and some determination we were able to meet our goal of 29 backpacks plus an additional $880 in cash donations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lloydminster. Our whole operation stepped up actually sponsoring kids in taking their school lists and outfitting them for the new school year. Without the generosity of our AECOM employees, lease operators, families and friends this wouldn’t have been possible. Special thanks to Sherry Thorel, Yvonne Blaquiere, Katie Odegard, Brenda Sholter and Carmen Guy for helping move this initiative over the finish line.

Replicating Rod by Josef Jacobson josef@lloydminstersource.com

What started as a Halloween joke has turned into a career for Rod Stewart tribute singer Vic Vaga. “The Rod Stewart tribute thing literally just fell in my lap and never stopped growing,” he said in an email. “I never set out to be a Rod impersonator. Had someone told me 30 years ago that I would be doing this, I would have laughed in their face because I wanted to be a hard rocking guitarist. I didn’t start singing until I realized that this was the path I actually couldn’t escape.” Vaga has been professionally involved in music since the 1980s, first as a booking agent and manager, then as a performer in cover bands. He has been performing as Rod Stewart since 2010 and on Sept. 19 Vaga brings his Rod Stewart tribute show to the Vic Juba Community Theatre. Vaga bears a resemblance to the British singer, both physically and vocally. He covers songs spanning Stewart’s entire career, but with an emphasis on the ‘70s and ‘80s. It was his experience at a professional impersonators convention in 2008 that led Vaga to pay homage to Stewart. “When I attended, I was unaware of how big the impersonator industry was,” he said. “By the time I decided to attend, I was already intrigued Photo Courtesy Vic Vaga and inspired to follow on this Las Vegas-based Rod Stewart tribute singtype of entertainment path. er Vic Vaga performs at the Vic Juba ComBut (I) had never met anyone munity Theatre on Sept. 19. who was doing it other than the very small group of three or four lookalikes I did very few engagements with on a yearly basis. Being around others who had made a living at it inspired me to work harder at developing the whole package so that I could be on that professional level as well.” Since then Vaga has been taking his Rod role beyond the stage. He is also ordained to marry, baptize and conduct funerals and so far he has married couples and done vow renewal ceremonies. “The people who hire me for these services are already die-hard Rod fans,” he said. “They are thoroughly entertained as the ceremonies are comprised of Rod song lyrics for the most parts. I’m happy to be part of their great moment.” Vaga says the majority of people he meets at his shows are longtime fans as well, looking to relive memories or introduce a new generation to Stewart’s music for the first time. “I think Rod has affected many, many people positively for many years and it brings happy feelings and memories to those who listen to his music or watch him live,” Vaga said. “I like the fact that I can help evoke (these) same kinds of feelings during my performances.” Letting Canadians keep more of their earnings has always been a priority of the Conservative Government. • Canadians are paying the lowest tax rates in 50 years. • We maintained the GST Credit for low and modest income Canadians while reducing the GST from 7% to 5% which translates into $1.1 billion in benefits annually for Canadians. • Tax Free Savings Accounts help Canadians manage their money. Eleven million Canadians now have a TFSA. • Income splitting is saving a Canadian family up to $2000.00 in tax. • The Universal Child Care Benefit is putting money directly into the pockets of hard-working Canadian families each month. Plus we have increased the Child Tax Deduction. • Tax credits to parents for children in sports or the arts, adoptive parents, or those renovating their home, all give families the opportunity to keep more of their hard-earned money.

NOTICE OF DECISION OF DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY COUNTY OF VERMILION RIVER LAND USE BYLAW NO. 13-14

Sweet, juicy, rich in colour and full of flavour. Each of these words describe the late-summer plum. Fruits that are ready to go for the end of summer or beginning of fall are so delicious, but also can remind us that summer is starting to turn into fall (oh well, it will be worth it for this fruit). Plums belong to the prunus family and are related to peaches, nectarines, cherries and almonds. Plums are also referred to as drupes or stone fruits and there are hundreds of varieties.

Boosted with many important nutrients such as vitamins C, K, A, iron and potassium, these delightful purplish-black gems not only taste great, but are good for you. They also are very high in antioxidants (a substance which removes damaging oxidizing agents). Prunes (dried plums) contain the concentrated source of the nutrients found in plums and have even more antioxidants than any other dried fruit. You will not want to miss adding these into your diet. Recipes with plums are endless and can include tarts, salads, crumbles, crisps, muffins, jams and sauces. Plums add depth, colour and flavour to any recipe. Enjoy this fruit harvest and watch for containers of plums in your local grocery store or perhaps at a fruit orchard close by.

Recipe of the week Roasted Stone Fruit with Cookie Crumble Recipe courtesy of CanolaInfo (www.canolainfo. org) Ingredients 2 to 4 ripe but firm peaches or nectarines, halved and pitted (or quartered if large) 3 to 4 ripe but firm large plums, halved and pitted 4 to 5 ripe but firm apricots, halved and pitted 1 Tbsp canola oil 15 mL 1 to 2 Tbsp granulated sugar 15 to 30 mL Crumble Topping 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 125 mL 1/2 cup oats (old-fashioned or quick-cooking) 125 mL 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 75 mL 3 Tbsp canola oil 45 mL Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 375 F (190 C). 2. In 9 by 13 inch (22 by 33 cm) baking dish, arrange halved fruit cutside up. Drizzle with canola oil and sprinkle with sugar. 3. Place in oven and roast for 15 minutes, until starting to soften. 4. Meanwhile, in bowl (or bowl of food processor), combine topping ingredients and pulse or blend with fork until well blended and crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over fruit or use spoon to fill hollow middle of each fruit half. 5. Bake for additional 15 to 20 minutes, until topping is golden and fruit is tender and bubbly around edges. Tip: If you like, add a handful of sliced almonds or hazelnuts to the topping mixture. To streamline the recipe, crumble gingersnaps, oatmeal cookies or amaretti overtop of the fruit instead of making the topping yourself. Serve warm with yogurt, ice cream or whipped cream.

Walking Through Grief Society facilitator Shirley Scott says reaching out can mean many things. “To reach out to those at risk and to reach out to families and to reach out to people with resources and to reach out with awareness to reduce the stigma and as well,” she said in council chambers. “We really appreciate the opportunity to reach out to people. And it takes courage to reach out.” Neil Harris, a local co-ordinator for Alberta Health Services’ Men at Risk Program, was also present at the meeting. He introduced a short video about a provincial initiative called Keep Him Here. He says the project is about providing resources to start a conversation about suicide awareness and about where people who are struggling can go find help. “Alberta, as was mentioned, has some of the highest suicide rates in Canada,” Harris said. “Every year in Alberta suicide takes more than 500 lives. Over 75 per cent of these deaths are men, mainly between the ages of 30 and 69. Fathers,

Can the Bobcats win the RBC Cup? Lots of movement has led to a brand new Bobcats roster. Now it is time to see if it works on the ice by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com

Gord Thibodeau doesn’t know if the Lloydminster Bobcats are good enough right now to win the RBC Cup in May. And the good thing for the coach and general manager is, that on the eve of the regular season, he doesn’t have to answer that question. But it will be a frequently asked question throughout the year until the puck drops on the RBC Cup on May 14, 2016. And this year’s roster will be the most analyzed group of players in franchise history, both before and after the national junior A championship is awarded to either the Bobcats or one of the other four regional teams involved in the tournament. There is still so much more to accomplish and so many milestones this season that the RBC Cup, like selecting the team to start the season in Bonnyville, is part of a process. There is still a 60-game Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season, the trade deadline on Jan. 10, the Gas Drive Playoffs starting in March and the Western Canada Cup the week prior to the national championship. Focusing on a week-long tournament in May is looking too far in the future, and for Thibodeau, negates what they are trying to accomplish. “It’s too far away to look at,” said Thibodeau about the RBC Cup. “What we have to look at is, where are these kids going to be in December, where are they going to be in January and February. I think there is a big up-curve. “Does that mean we are done? We are never done and you are always looking to improve your team and we think we have the makings of a

Gord Thibodeau will field the question many times this season on whether or not the Lloydminster Bobcats can win the RBC Cup in May. But for the coach and general manager, there is so much more to the season than just a one-week tournament.

good base right now. But we got to build on that base over the season.” The current base is tougher than last season’s team and has unquestionable amounts of untapped potential. They may not fill the net with nine goals a night and will still need to grind out some victories over the stretch of the season, but with their heavy depth on defence and the recent acquisition of Alec Leclerc to bolster their crease, gaining a few extra points out of the AJHL has been made a little easier, and gives the Bobcats a foundation on which to build upon. Selections have not come easy for the Bobcats, as more players came prepared to compete for spots at this year’s camp, while also showcasing their talents during the preseason where Lloydminster went 5-2 in seven games, leaving Thibodeau and the front office with some tough decisions to make about who would be named to the 25-man roster for opening night. With a roster selected, now it’s about figuring out

the direction the team wants to take, one that ultimately ends up playing in a national championship tournament. “We love the skill we have, but we also know we are going to make our bread with hard work and grit,” said Thibodeau. “That factors in. It’s hard to release any player who plays that style of game.” There have been many casualties along the way. Mitchell Brennan, Brett Everson, Ryan Ternes and Patrick Geary all have new homes and that list will get longer as the seasons moves on. Until the trade deadline in January, no player is guaranteed to stick with the team. There is still six 20-year-olds, the limit allowed in the AJHL. So if another veteran becomes available, it means another has to leave. But every move, indirectly, is answering that most difficult and often asked question: can the Lloydminster Bobcats win the RBC Cup? The next nine months will answer that question.

Pressure on captain to lead Historic year for Bobcats could lead Mulder to being first captain to lift championship Cup in franchise history by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com

There are many timely traditions in hockey, some more sacred than others. But perhaps one of the most revered is the hoisting of the Cup by the team captain, the eventual skate around the ice, the first kiss planted on the polished metal and the pass off to the next teammate in line for the process to be repeated. Everyone gets a turn, but it is the captain who gets to accept the Cup for the organization that has battled through a regular season and playoffs to be named the best in hockey. And for the the Lloydminster Bobcats, that honour falls to Taylor Mulder, who could be the first player, let alone captain, to hoist any

Cup over his head at the Civic Centre in franchise history. “I’m the captain of a team that is hosting a national championship,” said Mulder. “There is a lot of pressure for the team to do well and for me to lead them well.” Mulder reign as captain began on Jan. 10, 2015 at the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s (AJHL) trade deadline last season, when the Bobcats sent then 20-year-old captain Linden Springer to the Brooks Bandits for Shane Switzer and future considerations. The former assistant captain was now the leader and would guide the Bobcats through the opening round of the playoffs until their elimination against Bonnyville in Round 2.

Taylor Mulder took over as team captain last season after the trade deadline and will continue to wear the ‘C’ heading into the RBC Cup year for the Bobcats.

In his two years with the franchise he has played 114 games, the secondmost of any active player on the current roster, and has scored 26 goals and 55 points. He even transitioned from playing defence to playing

forward full time, a move that saw him become the big body player on the front line the Bobcats needed, putting his 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame in front of opposing goalies. See “Mulder,” Page 22

From Quebec to Australia to Lloydminster, Leclerc prepared for national spot and Canada’s best hockey teams Junior Hockey League in his Bobcats debut, and perhaps his shutout was a little redemption for his time in Australia. “It was a great experience,” said Leclerc. “It was all about the small details. The speed wasn’t as fast as it is here and not as physical. It just gave me awesome knowledge and more tools in my toolbox to use here.” Leclerc takes over the role left by graduating goalie Devin Green,

giving the Bobcats a veteran netminder who has the potential to steal games on his own. Bobcats coach and general manager Gord Thibodeau had the Quebec goalie in his back pocket for a month before finally announcing he was coming to Lloydminster, and knew when they saw film on him that he could be the goalie that leads the Bobcats into the RBC Cup. See “Leclerc,” Page 22

World travelled netminder for a shutout.” Leclerc had been doing his thing for the past three seasons in the Quebec Junior Hockey League for the Sherbrooke Cougars, leading them to the league final last season with a 15-6-2 record and 2.39 goals against average in 24 starts. The year before, in 30 starts, he had an 18-9-1 record and the Cougars lost in the semi-final. But his story isn’t just about a player who travelled across the country from his home in Montreal, as it was a trip to Melbourne in the offseason that landed the 20-year-old netminder with the Melbourne Ice of the Australian Ice Hockey League, and a trip to another league final in the same season. The semi-professional league gave him a chance to play against men, and in nine starts he was a perfect 9-0 for the Ice, who went to the league final against the Newcastle North Stars and lost on a penalty shot in overtime. It seemed fitting he played against the North Stars of the Saskatchewan

by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com

Alec Leclerc almost fell asleep during the Lloydminster Bobcats’ preseason game in Wainwright against the Battlefords North Stars. He had been back in Canada for just a couple of days since returning from Australia, and the flight and time change was definitely causing effects on his sleep habits. Twenty-four hours later he made his debut in a Bobcats’ jersey against the North Stars and made 21 saves in a shutout effort, helping to earn the Bobcats a 3-0 victory. But even though he was the goalie in net making the saves and he probably didn’t know half the names of the players in front of him on the ice, he was already giving credit to the players for their part in what will be his statistic. “That’s a team stat though,” corrected Leclerc. “Whenever everyone plays well and I do my thing, all the team gets the reward

“We knew he was a quality goalie, we watched film and did our homework, but until you actually get him here and see the whites of his eyes, you are always worried,” said Thibodeau. “We’re glad he is here. I was telling Garry (VanHereweghe) that if the team doesn’t get confidence having him in net then there is something wrong because he certainly looks like he is going to be a force this season.” Thibodeau wanted to start from the net out when building for the RBC Cup, and while Leclerc

was the last player to make an appearance for the Bobcats before the regular season, the wait was definitely worth every minute. There is a lot riding on his shoulders this season, as he aims for a scholarship to a university so he can continue to play hockey. And with the RBC Cup coming this season, Leclerc said it puts quite a bit of pressure on him, but that is why he plays the game. “We are living for these moments,” said Leclerc. “It’s a bit of pressure on you. But it is a great opportunity and I look forward to it.”

But it can’t be all brute force and gritty goals for the Lacombe, Alta. native. He is now the leader of the franchise on the ice in a special season not just for him, but for any player who puts on a jersey in the AJHL and the Canadian Junior Hockey League. “Every junior play aspires to be in the national championship and for us, we are hosting so it is a pretty cool opportunity.” With more than 300 penalty minutes in his AJHL career, Mulder may be more of a poster child for the style of the Lloydminster Bobcats this season. Often coaches speak of hard work and grit and want players to win the battles on the ice. So it only seems fitting that the man with the ‘C’ on his chest is the one leading that very charge, but also has the poise to do the things the captain has to do. He is the voice of the team, even though when he speaks to the media he is very short with his answers. He doesn’t say any more than he has to, and if there is any hockey cliche to sum up who he is as a player, it’s the one where he leaves it all out on the ice and lets his play do the talking. No player will have more responsibility on their shoulders than Mulder will this season as team captain. But he could also have the biggest responsibility in the franchise’s 34 year history as the first player to lift a Cup for the team. The Gas Drive Cup, Western Canada Cup and finally the RBC Cup, he could be an expert at lifting by the time this season comes to an end. “It’s pretty early to think that but it has obviously gone through everyone’s head,” said Mulder of having the opportunity to lift the RBC Cup. “(But) that would be quite the feeling.”

Bobcats boast a dynamic defensive core

Austin Yaremchuk

File Photo

Alex Pernitsky is one of three returning defencemen to the Lloydminster Bobcats blue line, a group that is deep from top to bottom and will be amongst the best in the AJHL. by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com

There is an old saying in sports that defence wins championships. The Lloydminster Bobcats seem to subscribe to that logic, as through trades and signings in the offseason, they have produced what may be the most dynamic group of defencmen that at least coach and general manager Gord Thibodeau has ever had. It’s a group many teams would be envious of, as the fast, puck-moving blue liners have shown early on just how great the core has been on the power play and in their own zone. But they also come with the hockey intelligence to make plays in their own end, get creative and take risks, knowing that if they do make a mistake, there is still someone behind them ready to pick up the pieces. “When you got guys who can move the puck and skate the puck out as well, it is a great attribute to have,” said Thibodeau. “Once we get all six in and they get use to their partners, I think it’s a dynamic group but it is also a group that defends well. They are not giving up a bunch of

scoring chances and that makes the game easier for the goaltender and the rest of the team.” Anchoring the blue line is 20-year-old and Lloydminster veteran Austin Yaremchuk, who has played 156 games over the last three years in Lloydminster, the most of any player on the current roster. While he has only eight goals, his 43 assists and 51 points and ability to move the puck has seen his power play time increase, while his role as assistant captain last season has shown his leadership qualities. Also returning for the Bobcats from last season are Alex Pernitsky and Cole Josefchak, both of which made commitments to Colorado College (NCAA Div. 1) last season. Then there are the players the Bobcats acquired over the summer, which includes Christian Lloyd, a 5-foot-11 defenceman from Oakville, Ont. who was acquired via trade when the Bobcats acquired Adam Clements from the Prince George Spruce Kings of the British Columbia League, then traded him for Lloyd. He made a commitment to Sacred Heart University (NCAA Div. 1) and will join another defenceman from Eastern Canada in Nick

Quillan, who is also committed to a NCAA Div. 1 school and will play at Colgate University in two seasons. The Bobcats also added Graydon Smith, who joined the team as a future consideration in the Lukas Biensch trade last season. He played 50 games last year with the Gas Drive Cup champion Spruce Grove Saints, and adds further depth into an already deep depth chart of blue liners. And rookie Brendan Kallis will fight for a spot in the top six. “We’re going to have a solid back end,” said Pernitsky. “Anyone can take any role. We still need to battle for our spots for what we are doing, but we are going to be such a solid defensive core.” The focus now turns to scoring goals, as the Bobcats are still without a prolific goal scorer, and will need their blue line to chip in as much as they can to create offence. “We play strong defensively, but if we can start scoring goals we can really get teams down,” said Josefchak. “It really puts confidence on the forwards because they know if they make a mistake, we got the defence back there to back them up.”

ADM expands premium canola contract ADM Agri-Industries has announced that it is expanding the reach of its Nexera Omega-9 canola contracts for 2016 due to the success of the program and the continued rising demand for Omega-9 canola oil. ADM Agri-Industries first introduced the program in February. According to ADM, the Nexera program offers competitive off-thecombine premiums, enabling producers to receive great premiums right at harvest without the risk of spoilage or hassle of on-farm storage segregation. Contracts with flexible delivery options are also available, allowing producers to deliver their grain as late as February while still receiving competitive premiums. These flexible delivery options also provide producers with “Act of God” protection while contracting their estimated full production. “With the help of these premium contract options, Western Canadian canola growers have earned more than $500 million above commodity canola prices to date,” said J.P. Montalvo, commercial manager of ADM AgriIndustries Lloydminster, in a news release. “We are excited to expand the program, offering our farmers strong premiums, flexible delivery options and excep-

tional service at our Lloydminster facility with additional storage and unloading capacity to help meet the increased demand.” With the Nexera program, growers can help protect themselves from weather and market risks with the new contracts while enjoying a high level of flexibility on pricing, delivery and seed options. The program allows farmers to book a delivery month when they sign the contract, just like contracts for generic canola. In addition, certain Nexera contracts allow farmers to backfill contracts with commodity canola in case of a shortage. Lloydminster is one of two ADM locations to offer Nexera contracts. Today, Omega-9 canola oil is helping meet consumer demand for healthier oils. In food applications, Omega-9 canola oil is an excellent choice for adding stability, shelf life and a neutral taste to applications ranging from confectionery and non-dairy products to seasonings and frying. When partnering with ADM, the seeds farmers grow are transformed into the food ingredients used around the world. To learn more about the services ADM offers growers, visit www.adm.com/ farmers.

Web-based pricing site launched The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) has announced the launch of the first phase of its web-based crop data and price reporting initiative. Price & Data Quotes (PDQ) aims to be a complete and unbiased resource for cash market prices and crop data to provide reliable and relevant price information to farmers. The AWC say the PDQ service will improve farmers’ ability to make well-informed marketing decisions and to maximize the value of their crops. As the basis for this service, member companies of the Western Grain Elevator Association (WGEA), at their election, will provide price information (elevator bids) for five commodities at all country locations. Information includes daily spot and forward bid prices for red spring wheat, prairie spring wheat, durum, canola and peas. “AWC is extremely pleased to launch PDQ, made possible by our collaboration with the major grain companies,” said Tom Steve, AWC general manager, in a news release. “This level of cooperation is encouraging and we look forward to improving the level of price transparency available for farmers and other industry stakeholders via PDQ.” The PDQ service compiles pricing information on its website, www.pdqinfo.ca, into regional price averages across nine zones covering Western Canada. Additionally, the site provides futures market closing prices, average wheat grade and protein spreads, local weather and foreign exchange rates. Future versions of PDQ will include customizable functionality and charting capabilities and AWC will endeavour to add other commodities. Additionally, current basis information will be linked to futures market prices. The site will not report final transaction prices, and will not replace the interaction between farmers and their local elevators or farm market advisors, but will provide easily accessible and reliable market trends and indicators.

Five reasons to buy a home now MIDWEST MINUTE by Vern McClelland www.vernmcclelland.com

Number One - Selection. How many times have you walked into a big store that is a delight to browse just because every aisle has different products pleasingly presented – many with sale tags? Today in the Midwest, we have a wide variety of housing to choose from, unlike a year ago when if you didn’t “settle” for something that would work, but wasn’t really what you wanted for your family. Number Two - Time to consider your options. Now I am not suggesting that you look at 50 houses before getting serious but you do have more time to make a decision in most cases. It’s one thing to be a savvy buyer, but procrastinators still finish out of the running. In the last recession I had a client who missed out on four, yes four, good homes because he just couldn’t pull the trigger. He called the other day wondering if we should go looking again as he is still renting. I wonder if one of my competitors, I mean colleagues, would like to spend quality time with him? Number Three - Sellers more willing to negotiate. Well at least some are; others still are resisting the market we are experiencing. Motivation is alive and well. If a seller needs to move, then likely they may engage willingly into a back and forth dialogue until there is a deal on the table. However, almost every offer we are getting these days could be characterized as “low ball.”And even if we do get to an accepted offer, sellers are left fuming and buyers are talking themselves out of completing. Very frustrating for all concerned, so please don’t go shopping unless you are serious about buying. Number Four - Low interest rates. If you have the down payment and your debt service ratio is acceptable, there probably has never been a more affordable time to enter into home ownership or trade up. I will tell you right now that when our economy gets back on track, and it will, the cost of housing will once again spike as people flow back into the area for the employment opportunities that will be here. Number Five - Realtors often know where the diamonds are. In times like these sellers often get discouraged and take their property prematurely off the market. Buyers usually don’t focus on what they want until there is a tipping point in their life – another child, empty nest, new relationship, job transfer, etc. Every veteran Realtor has a few “hip pocket” listings. For example, I know of a great acreage that will be coming available after renovations are complete in a few weeks. Better yet, the owner is willing to take a lower value house on trade.

Footnote: If you are reading this article while wondering how you are going to support your family in the months ahead because of work slowdown or job loss, my heart goes out to you. I recognize that these are not easy times for many families in the Midwest and I pray you will find the strength to see this downturn through. Personally I am called to do five to six valuations every week with at least two thirds created by financial stress or relationship breakdown. All any of us can do is ride this current economic environment out as best we can. We have been here before, as were our parents and grandparents. Grandma McClelland told me that during the Depression of the 1930s that almost everyone in the community was at the same level of poverty. Neighbours helped neighbours. Often several generations of a family lived together. Bartering was quite acceptable. The local grocer would take eggs, potatoes, and firewood on trade. If someone stopped by at meal time you fed them even if the soup had to be watered down or the bread cut thinner. Obviously none of us want to relive those times but the principles remain true. We are here to see each other through, not through each other. They managed to survive and raise their family. We will too. Vern McClelland is an associate broker with RE/MAX of Lloydminster and a partner with The Midwest Group. Follow activities of the team on Facebook, watch their information videos or virtual tours of listings on www.mgtv.ca or contact them at www.wesellmidwest.ca.

As Canada celebrated Labour Day on Monday, the construction industry is recognizing the contributions of 1.3 million Canadians who build, repair and maintain a whopping $2.1 trillion worth of infrastructure each year. “We’re very proud of our one million strong construction workforce,” says Rosemary Sparks, executive director of BuildForce Canada. “Labour Day is an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for what’s been built, and to welcome the thousands of new faces who will lead the industry and build Canada into the future.” Canada’s construction industry is undergoing the most dramatic demographic shift in its history. Over the next decade up to 250,000 workers, who make up one-quarter of Canada’s construction workforce, are retiring. They’re making way for a new wave of younger workers who will fill new positions as baby boomers retire over the next 10 years. “Right now, the average age of a construction worker is 41,” adds Sparks. “A decade from now, the workforce will look much different, as the industry promotes construction careers in more than 50 trades and occupations, to a younger generation.” Calli Zwierschke is part of that changing face of construction. The 24-yearold began her career in the skilled trades five years ago, and is proud to be an apprentice electrician. “It’s a career that allows you to build skills for life,” says Zwierschke. “It’s a fantastic lifestyle with the flexibility and opportunity to apply your skills anywhere in the world.” BuildForce has been reaching out to the next generation of construction workers where they live – online. Using YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms, BuildForce has reached more than 3 million Canadians aged 15 to 25 who visited its redesigned Careers in Construction website at www.careersinconstruction.ca. BuildForce Canada is a national industry-led organization that represents all sectors of Canada’s construction industry. Its mandate is to provide accurate and timely labour market data and analysis, as well as programs and initiatives to help manage workforce requirements and build the capacity and the capability of Canada’s construction and maintenance workforce.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF LORI CRAVEN (WESTON), WHO PASSED AWAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2002 From the tree of life each leaf must fall. The green, the gold, the great, the small. Each one in God’s own time, He’ll call. With perfect love He gathers all. Like falling leaves the years slip by, but precious memories never die. Memories live forever; they grow richer through the years. They are nurtured by our laughter; they are watered by our tears. Memories live forever, sent from Heaven above; to eternally connect us, to the people that we love. Forever loved Don & Donna, Sheldon, Wade, Melissa & Kerry

Feel like you’re running around in circles and getting nowhere, Virgo? You are not alone. Fall back and regroup. A series of texts get the creative juices flowing.

Libra out of touch? Whose fault is that? Many people manage to find a good balance between home and work, and you can, too. A meeting goes well.

In over your head, Scorpio? You can’t stop now, but you can get some help. Look to a couple of buddies to volunteer. Errors are corrected.

SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 21

Up and down, round and round. Life proves to be quite the rollercoaster ride this week, Sagittarius. Not to worry. Normalcy will return.
