Because of you, LLU Children's Hospital has been able to prioritize the health and safety of children for over thirty years. Since 1993, LLU Children's Hospital has been a place of compassionate care that champions leading-edge healthcare specifically for children.
Because of you, our hospital has grown into a 364-bed facility with more than 225 pediatricians and pediatric surgeons providing advanced and specialized care for the 1.2 million children living in San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties.
Because of you, 90,000 children are able to visit our hospitals and clinics each year to get the critical care they need. In fact, you’ve paved the way for 17,000 annual hospitalizations, more than 200 pediatric heart surgeries each year, and for specialized treatments that address 30 different conditions affecting children.

Welcome to the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital
31st Annual Foundation Gala, Saddle Up for Miracles. Tonight, we celebrate over three decades of providing healing for children, and focus on creating a future filled with hope and healing for our communities.
Building upon our recent pediatric healthcare expansion efforts, I am excited to share we are turning our attention to new frontiers, including a medical office building just for pediatric outpatient services. By creating a network of care in one location, we nurture the well-being of children and families and forge a path to a brighter future. We are also continuing to push the frontiers of pediatric oncology treatments to bring the future of healthcare to our children and their families. Our new campaign, Stronger Together, will allow Loma Linda University Children's Hospital to inspire, imagine, dream, and deliver on the promise of a healthier tomorrow.
For three decades, we have prioritized patient safety, quality, and innovation, earning accolades such as being recognized for the sixth time in seven years as a Top Children's Hospital by The Leapfrog Group and receiving continued recognition from U.S. News & World Report as a best children's hospital.

An Inland Empire staple on K-FROG, broadcasting for nearly 30 years, mother to a Children’s Hospital patient and a Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation board member, Heather Froglear is an enthusiastic advocate for pediatric healthcare. Combining her talent and passion, Heather Froglear has helped K-FROG raise more than $7 million to benefit Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
Hi, I am Anthony Donatelli and I have been lucky enough to live out my dreams of being on the radio for almost 10 years now! It all came to fruition after graduating from California State University, San Bernardino, and landing an on-air position at Audacy's KFRG 95.1-FM right out of college. I have had the honor of interviewing some of the biggest names in country music, as well as hosting many different concerts and charity events. The job that I have at home as a husband and dad is by far my favorite though. My wife Torri and I tied the knot in 2014 and we have a daughter, Reese, who we welcomed to the world in 2021.
Nashville-based Fiddle Sisters is a pair of sibling violin players, 13-year-old Summer and 10-year-old Kadence, who love sharing their music and inspiring others.
Born into a musical family, Summer and Kadence began studying violin at age two with their mother. Fiddle Sisters' performance pieces range from classical compositions to Bluegrass to Irish music and they are often joined by their father on guitar.

The Shirley N. Pettis Award recognizes outstanding dedication and distinguished service to children. Through their volunteerism and community service, award recipients have demonstrated the desire and motivation to improve the lives of children throughout the Inland Empire. Throughout her career, The Honorable Shirley N. Pettis Thompson was dedicated to improving the status of children, both nationally and in California. After her husband’s passing, she was elected to his seat and served the 37th Congressional District of California in the 94th and 95th Congress. Her commitment was underscored by six years of service as founding chair of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation Board. Under her leadership, the Foundation expanded its membership and increased awareness of children’s issues and needs. In recognition of her commitment and service to LLU Children’s Hospital and in appreciation for her lifelong dedication to improving the quality of life for children, we acknowledge and remember the late Honorable Shirley N. Pettis Thompson through this award.

Dr. Richard Chinnock, MD, is a devoted pediatrician who exemplifies a familial legacy in pediatric care. With more than three decades of service to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, Dr. Chinnock serves as Chief Medical Officer for the Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Chinnock’s passion for the mission of Loma Linda University Health stems from his upbringing as the son of a pediatrician who also faithfully served LLU Children’s Hospital for decades. Now a father to a pediatrician himself, Dr. Chinnock has been part of more than 60 years of pediatric history in Loma Linda and is grateful for the part his family has played in its formation.
The recipient of a U.S. Navy scholarship, Dr. Chinnock earned his MD from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1982. After medical school, he served as a battalion surgeon at Camp Pendleton and later completed a pediatric residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
Retiring from the Navy as a Navy Captain, Dr. Chinnock joined the pediatric heart transplant team in 1989 and worked alongside Dr. Leonard Bailey. He has since held various pivotal roles, including pediatric residency director, medical director of the pediatric heart transplant team, professor and chair of pediatrics. He was the first president of the medical staff and helped develop the bylaws for Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
A lifelong learner, Dr. Chinnock recognized the importance of administrative and policy skills in healthcare leadership and went on to earn a master’s degree in healthcare management from Harvard School of Public Health in 2013.
For his lifelong dedication and distinguished service provided to children and staff at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, it is an honor to recognize Dr. Richard Chinnock with the 2024 Shirley N. Pettis Award.
Nancy B. Varner was one of the founding board members of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation in 1992. Her active involvement with the Children’s Hospital included a term as the Foundation’s chair and chairing the inaugural Children’s Hospital Foundation Gala. In recognition of Nancy’s outstanding dedication and distinguished service to children through volunteerism and community service, the Lifetime Achievement Award is now known as the Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award.

Nancy, who passed away in 2019 following a battle with cancer, co-founded the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guild, the Inland Women Fighting Cancer Committee, and the annual Believe Walk in Redlands.
Founded in 1999 by Dixie Watkins, Nancy Varner, and Eloise Habekost, the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guilds stand as an extraordinary volunteer force dedicated to enriching the experiences of young patients at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Comprising three chapters – Desert, Loma Linda, and Riverside – with more than 40 board members and 365 annual members, these guilds have united communities across the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley to raise an impressive $13+ million for the hospital.
With a mission centered on organizing patient diversionary activities and enhancing medical services through fundraising, the guilds focus on bringing joy to young patients. Signature events like Gingerbread Village, Teddy Bear Day, Arts/Crafts sessions, and Reading Books programs provide uplifting activities for children undergoing medical treatment.
Founding members Dixie Watkins and Eloise Habekost embody the dedicated spirit of fundraising volunteers, humorously dubbing themselves “shameless beggars.” Their tireless efforts extend beyond, actively recruiting friends and family to join their cause, contributing crucial funds that significantly support the hospital’s mission of delivering quality care to children in need.
Through unwavering commitment, compassion, and creative fundraising initiatives, the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guilds, continue to leave a lasting positive imprint on the lives of children and families served by Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. For this, we are honored to award both Dixie and Eloise with the Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Leonard L. Bailey was a world-renowned pediatric heart surgeon whose work has given hope to children everywhere. His research and innovations in infant cardiology have helped save thousands of lives around the world. For 42 years, Dr. Bailey guided patients and their families at Loma Linda University Health through some of their most trying times. In honor of his legacy, we renamed our Outstanding Clinician Award to recognize Dr. Bailey’s lifetime of contributions.

For more than thirty years, Dr. Moores has been a steadfast presence in meeting the surgical needs of critically ill and injured children in the Inland Empire. Holding roles such as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Medical Director of Pediatric Trauma Services at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, he consistently delivers compassionate care during critical moments for patients and families.
Dr. Moores has not only enhanced the quality of care across all hospital levels but has also been a staunch advocate for pediatric trauma care at local, regional, and state levels. His passion for providing the best care shines through his work, impacting patients, interns, residents, and colleagues alike.
Dr. Moores’ humor, positivity, and selfless dedication have left an indelible mark on the pediatric surgical and critical care community of the Children’s Hospital. He leads by example, teaching residents and students a holistic approach to patient and family care, and his work ethic and acts of kindness are unmatched.
For his exceptional contributions and unwavering commitment to pediatric care, Dr. Moores is a fitting recipient of this year’s Dr. Leonard L. Bailey Outstanding Clinician Award.

At just six weeks old, Oakley Quinonez, born with a deep love for the outdoors, embarked on a journey into the world of mountains, fishing spots, and off-road terrains. Described by her mother, Crystal Quinonez, as a "girly girl with a tutu," Oakley fearlessly interacted with wildlife, picking up lizards and bugs.
"She is a light to everyone she meets and to everything she does. She's the happiest child you could ever meet," said Crystal.
In September 2022, their lives took an unexpected turn when what appeared to be a common cold turned out to be acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer affecting white blood cells in the blood and bone marrow.
"She started getting what we just thought was a cold. All the kids at gymnastics kept getting colds, so we were like, 'Okay, it's just a normal cold.' And then her eyes started to swell."
Oakley's diagnosis came from Latikia Puri, MBBS, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist at Children's Hospital. The projected treatment plan spanned two and a half to three years, marked by challenges such as severe leg pain causing difficulty in standing, neuropathy, hair loss, and the challenges of treatment.
Crystal shared, "I think the hardest thing for her was the hair loss, because we would brush her hair every morning, and it was like, 'Oh, your pretty hair, let's get your pretty hair ready.' And after it started falling out, she was like, 'Oh, I'm not pretty anymore. I don't have my pretty hair anymore.'"
The initial intensive phase, lasting about nine to 10 months, mainly occurred in the outpatient setting, with occasional hospital admissions for rigorous chemotherapy. As the first year concluded, the treatment's intensity decreased.
Oakley's treatment has transitioned to a less intensive phase, now managed at home with oral chemotherapy. Her regimen includes a medication specifically targeting and killing tumor cells, with fewer typical side effects associated with chemotherapy. This represents a significant advancement in pediatric cancer treatment, offering medications with reduced short-term and long-term side effects. A glimmer of hope emerged as her hair grew back, signifying a return to normalcy for both Oakley and her family.
Tonight, as we honor Oakley's journey, let her story remind us that even in the darkest moments, a little sunlight can illuminate the path to hope and resilience.
Join us in transforming pediatric cancer treatment at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and Cancer Center, the sole provider of comprehensive cancer care in the Inland Empire. Tonight, we have an extraordinary opportunity to revolutionize cancer treatment, ensuring cutting-edge options are accessible to all, especially the most vulnerable.
Unfortunately, some children face disproportionately high rates of pediatric cancer, and these disparities are particularly severe among certain populations, making successful outcomes more challenging.
Loma Linda University Children's Hospital is leading the way in immunotherapy, specifically CAR-T cell therapy, to address these challenges. CAR-T cell therapy uses a patient’s own immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells, offering a promising solution for leukemia, especially for children of Hispanic, African American, and Native American heritage.
Our goal is to purchase the ClinicsMacs Prodigy platform, essential for cell processing and manufacturing, at a cost of $350,000 each. Your contribution tonight will enable us to develop groundbreaking treatments and expand our capacity to serve the children in our community.
Your support will directly impact the lives of those battling leukemia and other blood cancers in the Inland Empire and beyond, offering hope and healing to families in need.
