MANILA

THESIS DESCRIPTION Current healthcare establishments throughout the rural, developing world are often designed and delivered with either a lack of design quality, sanitation, or cultural sensitivity. The most difficult obstacle is the distance between existing quality care and need for immediate response. Too frequently, immediate response applications, such as disaster relief or medical missions, are delivered with a lack in initiating long term economic progress, or the design lacks appropriateness towards the user and context. In the infrastructure of healthcare, there has yet to be a successful way of engaging permanent application. Current facilities within these areas suffer from insufficient air and water CEBU quality, with a need of specialty care that is flexible enough for a community’s need and budget. This thesis explores the advantages of prefabrication methods with integration of local methods in assembly and application in order to achieve balance between manufactured design and site specificity. Set in Catmon, Cebu Philippines, a pediatric and obstetric clinic will help improve and provide lasting health maintenance in the community, including neighboring areas. Local culture and traditions were explored in order to appropriately apply vernacular construction techniques and environmental responsive design. Prefabricating the clinical program allows for essential integration of medical equipment needs, easy maintenance cleaning and flexibility in site placement – providing an efficient solution in the delivery of healthcare

Air Conditioning Units

The sites elongated form develops an opportunity for passive ventilation that passes through the building with the open floors and the process of stack ventilation.

Humidity is a discomfort in high temperatures and therefore areas in tropical regions such as the Philippines will benefit from this active system. Each module will have the option to have AHU’s included and will have floor registers built in.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION In recent years, San Diego’s craft beer industry has drastically spread through out the county and has now gained national recognition. Stone Brewery is one of the top breweries that have been able to top the market and has the ability to expand through it’s successes. The idea of opening a satellite office downtown will allow an easier network for distribution, as well as providing an opportunity to hold an experimental brewery for local beer connoisseurs to test new brews. With Stone’s identity of having a strong personality and connection to it’s fans, it was fundamental to develop a design that would provide an interaction between the public and private programs. Interactive spaces are essential while also incorporating environmental strategies to encourage greener energies and reducing costs. The aim of the design is to provide spaces that are integrated in order to accommodate a collaborative environment between employees and the public in order to continue to make one of San Diego’s best line of beers.

The human eye and its brain interface, the human visual system, can process 10 to 12 separate images per second, perceiving them individually. The visual cortex holds onto one image for about one-fifteenth of a second, so if another image is received during that period an illusion of continuity is created, allowing a sequence of still images to give the impression of motion.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION Film is our highest grossing medium for storytelling; which in all cultures, has a rich history of bringing communities together. In Japan, the conventional experience at a cinema has been privatized as a prescribed choreographed sequence which begins with purchasing tickets to assigned seating, and terminates along with the end of the film. However, in envisioning what a cinema of the future may look like, we took a retrospective look at Japan’s traditional customs of public storytelling, where storytellers would gather pedestrians to perform a tale written and illustrated on a series of paper placards. In this contemporary age, the people of Japan, especially the youth, have become reclusive and home bodied. In addition, Tokyo is defined by a series of subcultures, where every district has a unique character and niche group that it caters to. Therefore, the goal of this cinema is to bring all masses of people, back into Shibuya’s dynamic and eclectic culture by adding an interactive media park, a media library, a restaurant and lounge; a flexible program which provides a series of uses during all times of the day.

Restaurant 501 W. Olympic Blvd Los Angeles, CA 2008-2010

CLIENT DESCRIPTION - Trendy look to compete with LA’s style - Intimate, yet casual dining experience - Central bar plan - Accommodate 60 guests - Sake Display - Designated area to showcase local artists The process began by evaluating the space to accommodate the requested 60 guests. From there, it was important to address the clients desire for an intimate, yet casual experience. In the creative process, booth seating with tall bamboo-like decor, created height between each dining area providing intimate spaces and splashes of bold color to keep things trendy. Creating texture through lighting and materials were design elements that highlighted style details to complete the look.

“...it was important to address the clients desire for an intimate, yet casual experience.”
