YOUNGSTERS at Thorp Primary School in Royton went bananas as they joined in with a nationwide world record attempt. Pupils and teachers all ate a banana at lunch time to celebrate the end of Fairtrade Fortnight on Friday. Hundreds of thousands vowed to “go bananas” in a bid to set a new world record for eating the fruit in the 24 hours up to noon on Saturday. Organisers of the Fairtrade Foundation say its guaranteed minimum prices can help double the pay of plantation workers, some who earn less than £1 per day. Residents in the first Fairtrade towns in the UK and the US — Garstang in Lancashire and Media in Pennsylvania — watched each other taking part in the record attempt via video link. It is still to be confirmed whether a world record was set.
