Project Description: Research an issue found in current events and build a brand around how graphic design may help solve it.
Project Concept and Design Goals: I tackled the issue of single use plastic pollution and its effect on marine life. My goal was to educate the public on the environmental damages it was causing and to inspire them in simple ways to seek alternatives to the use of single use plastic. By utilizing simple forms and shapes to create engaging and approachable designs, I was able to both inform and inspire my audience. I chose cool ocean blues and a contrasting soft yellow tone to emphasize the connection to the ocean and establish visual hierarchy throughout my compositions. In creating my visual system, I was able to create three separate brand extensions that still felt well balanced and cohesive within my vision. My brand extensions were designed to immediately engage the public in fun and interactive aquarium events and to reach my target audience. By developing an app, I was able to give that audience a hand held tool to assist in making better choices regarding single use plastic. In producing a four box subscription service that the audience could tailor to their lifestyle, an outlet was provided to achieve the goal of reducing the harmful effects of single use plastic pollution on our marine environment.

Project Description: Visit a local art exhibit and develop a two piece type system for it in creating both a printed deliverable and an environmental design.
Project Concept and Design Goals: The local exhibit selected for this project was Color Wheel by Pat Steir, on display at the Hirshhorn Museum. While viewing the exhibit, I was immediately inspired by the use of textures and color found in Steir’s work. This exhibit, occupying the entire second floor of the museum, includes 30 large scale paintings showcasing Steir’s interpretation of the color wheel. Taking inspiration from the exhibit, I set out to create a graphic representation of Steir’s use of color and drip technique. For the printed piece I chose to create an exhibition booklet with these graphic drips shown in a subtractive form to create visual interest but not detract from Steir’s work. Pulling spot colors from Steir’s work, I was able to establish hierarchy throughout the booklet and create contrast in my typography. In my environmental designs, I was able to implement the same visual language seamlessly. The graphic drips now function as way finding elements found around the exhibit and the vibrant colors help draw the audience’s attention. It was fun to create a visual system around Pat Steir’s work, showcasing the experimental and vibrant features from her paintings.

Project Description: Create a website design proposal for a local business in your area that currently has a poorly designed web presence.
Project Concept and Design Goals: A few doors down from my current job is a small coffee shop with a mean cappuccino but a subpar website. In creating this design proposal, I first assessed the coffee shop’s website needs and then their local competition. Based on my competitive analysis and current company branding, I established three key words to drive the visual design of the site: warmth, rich and inviting. From there, I created a style tile based on pulls from my mood board to establish a unified visual system for the overall design. In creating personas and user scenarios, I was able streamline the usability and navigation of the new site’s design. The finished product was a brand new website for both desktop and mobile platforms that will both ease the user experience and fulfill the coffee shop’s needs.

Project Description: To design and assemble a company cookbook filled with recipes from our team as a holiday gift for their clients during a worldwide pandemic.
Project Concept and Design Goals: There was a very short timeline to assemble the recipes and photographs for this project. For this recipe book to be consistently arranged, I needed to create a system to bring the content together. I used color to help organize the book and created layouts that felt consistent in design and at the same time visually different enough to not become too predictable. Since it was a gift during an unprecedented time, I felt I needed to add warmth into the design for it to be inviting and personable. Using experimental topography, I created a cover using my own two hands as the focal point. The result was a book that our team felt proud to have themselves and to send out to all their clients

Project Description: I was instructed to choose a podcast of interest and create a chapbook, utilizing the show transcript to create a visual representation of the content.
Project Concept and Design Goals: During my research for this project, I was immediately drawn to a podcast on The Moth, featuring Simon Doonan, Creative Ambassador for Barneys New York. The podcast focuses on his retirement life but also looks back on his career as a window designer and highlights his feelings of insecurity as a credible artist. He talks about finding self-recognition in an opportunity he has as an expert judge on NBC’s, Making It. His overall tone throughout the podcast was sarcastic and jovial. I tried to emulate that tone, utilizing fun photographs and creating movement within the graphic elements. I created handmade elements to add into my chapbook design to reference Doonan’s use of hand crafted items in his work. Lastly, I used color and scale in my typography to create hierarchy and chose really simple sans serif typefaces throughout the book to balance nicely with the crafty elements.

Project Description: I was instructed to research a dead or dying brand and relaunch it with a different visual identity. In the rebrand, we were to take the current brand mission and update it, while still staying true to the brand’s soul.
Project Concept and Design Goals: The company I chose to relaunch was Claire’s because it is a brand that is nostalgic to my childhood. In designing a new Brand Strategy Book and Brand Standards Book, I was able to update both the visual system of Claire’s as well as its mission statement. It was important for me to keep the idea that Claire’s is a business that empowers our young female generation to be independent and at the same time to modernize it to avoid too much emphasis on outward appearances. I created a more modern color palette of black, white, and turquoise with a balancing color of a warm grey to help simplify the brand’s visual system. The new logo I created was centered around the idea of using circular forms to symbolize coming together; all- encompassing and focusing on one’s self. All my designs and brand extensions centered around the ideas of creating, connecting and empowering Claire’s clientele.
