C
hef Tim Love has thrown his support behind a portion of the Thin Line Film Fest. The Love Shack, a stylish and popular downtown burger joint run by the Denton native and celebrity patty slinger, is the official sponsor of the Thin Line Love Film Fest Kids Docs, which will start at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 at the Campus Theatre. The Kids Docs block features three films: Library Larry’s Big Day
— The local children’s television program, produced by the city of Denton, features three puppets who live in the library: Library Larry, a good old Texas bull; Emmy Lou Dickenson, a word-loving pig; and Mr. Chompers, a young hippo who gets his words mixed up. Seeing in the Dark — First aired on PBS, this is a film about stargazers who try to describe an indescribable experience. They turn the lens away from themselves and onto the skies, inviting viewers to share their wordless awe. Rise and Dream — This is the story of 13 teenagers who live with the challenges
of poverty in a volatile region of the Philippines. When the teens volunteer to learn the music traditions of their culture for a once-in-a-lifetime concert, they discover the task is more difficult than they first imagined. The family-friendly event will be free, and seating will be first come, first served. The Thin Line Film Fest is the only documentary film festival in Texas. It opens Feb. 10 and runs through Feb. 20. For more information, visit www.thinlinefilmfest.com. Festival passes are on sale now, available at http://thin linefilmfest.tix.com. — Lucinda Breeding

enton’s indie-folk it girl, Sarah Jaffe, isn’t cooling her jets in 2012. Kirtland Records announced that the city’s acoustic sweetheart is already preparing to hit the road, performing next month on Cayamo, a seven-day cruise that departs from Miami with the likes of Lucinda Williams, the Civil Wars and Rhett Miller. In March, Jaffe will tour the West Coast opening for Guthrie — a tribute to Woody Guthrie with songwriters Will Johnson of Denton’s Centro-matic, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Jay Farrar, best known for Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo, and Anders Parker of Varnaline. (The tour falls during 35 Denton, and Jaffe isn’t among the local bands listed for this year’s fest.) — Lucinda Breeding

Denton Community Theatre uses intimate space for authentic snapshot of Billie Holiday’s last days By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor
he year is 1959. The place is Emerson’s Bar & Grill in South Philly. Billie Holiday — also known to her fans as “Lady Day” — is fresh out of jail for drug possession. Her performance card has been revoked because of her arrest and jail time. She’s in the spotlight, anyway. Both her ghosts and demons are just beyond the light at this illegal concert, and they’d like nothing better than for her voice to crack.
T
Sherna Armstrong spends nearly two hours performing the role of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a musical about one of the final concerts of her life. Don Roberson, background, plays her pianist, Jimmy Powers. Denton Record-Chronicle/ David Minton
Director Bradley Speck knows the latest Denton Community Theatre show is a downer, but he said he’s counting on the music and the barbed humor to give the biographical Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill the buoyancy it needs to keep from sinking. “When I read the script, I loved it,” Speck said. “It’s a reconstruction of one of her final performances.” Continued on Page 10

The show is a three-date engagement at the company’s latest venue, the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center. Speck said the show is an intimate look at a huge talent who died at 44 of cirrhosis of the liver. It calls for an intimate setting. “We’re turning the black box into a club,” he said. “We’ll have a bar, some tables and some seats set up on risers.” Speck cast additional performers to act as the bartender and barmaids, but the show is in the hands of Sherna Armstrong in the title role and University of North Texas student Don Roberson as Jimmy Powers, the piano man who also tends to Lady Day as a caretaker. Armstrong carries most of the show, singing a greatest-hits menu of Holiday songs (some of them, like the barn-burner “Gimme a Pig’s Foot,” are borrowed from Bessie Smith and other belles of jazz and blues). “I’m concerned about whether I sound like her, look like her and move like her. You know? I’m concerned about whether I’m saying it the way Billie said it. Being that I’m an African-American woman, I have an advantage. But there’s still that concern,” Armstrong said. “I have always loved Billie. She is an icon. She is the queen of the bluesjazz style.” Armstrong isn’t trying for any rote imitation. She’s channeling the lilting belt of Holiday’s better days, and yoking it to a weary, done-in manner of Holiday’s declining years. Armstrong tries for joy in the eternally hopeful “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” and tries not to break during the macabre “Strange Fruit,” a grotesque song picture about black men lynched on poplars and magnolia boughs. “I think she is someone who has learned to live with very few triumphs,” Armstrong said. “And she turns her sorrow into joking about it, laughing at it, almost to insanity. She talks about waking up to find her grandmother dead. She was sleeping with her grandmother, and she says that waking up in the arms of her dead grandmother wasn’t the worst thing that happened to her.” Roberson, a stealth player who improvises at the keyboard in a way that makes raging ragtime riffs ease into bluesy jazz, said he auditioned simply because of the qualifications Speck listed in the notice.

MOVIES
‘Lady Day’ “The audition notice said you must be a jazz pianist and be African-American,” he said. “That narrows things down a lot. That’s slim pickings around here.” Roberson said he had never played Billie Holiday songs before. “I was used to hearing her sing these songs,” he said. “I’m a piano empowerment person, and now that I’ve played this music, I’m going to use some of this music for auditions. It’s good stuff.” Armstrong and Roberson said the show requires that pianist and singer have a very close working relationship. He watches Armstrong closely from behind the upright piano. “One thing that has really amazed me about Sherna is that when she starts a song a cappella, and then the piano comes in, she knows exactly what the note is,” said Theresa Ferrell, an acting coach for the production. Armstrong joked that she’s a happy inheritor of perfect pitch before confessing that Ferrell’s been kind of tricked by the chemistry between singer and accompanist. “What you’re hearing there is her starting the song, and me gradually guiding her to the note where she’s supposed to be. Yeah, I guess you could say I’m transcribing the song in the moment a little,” Roberson said. The two musicians said they did a lot of talking while they carpooled from Dallas to rehearsals. The hour-long discussions helped them lay ground rules and work on glitches. Speck said he knows the show is hefty; It’s a sad journey through Holiday’s personal defeats, and her brief salvation through music. But it’s also a look back to the South’s fall from grace, when segregation forced many a young black woman into prostitution and stamped out the dreams of many a young black man. Holiday recalls having to eat in the kitchens of the white clubs that earned a lot of money off of her while white diners got VIP treatment in the dining room. “This isn’t any easy show, no,” Speck said at the end of a Fridaynight rehearsal. “She had a very rough life, but she gave so much in spite of that. She’s an icon.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@ dentonrc.com.
Thomas Horn portrays Oskar Schell in a scene from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Warner Bros. Pictures
Notably irksome Sentimental tale made unbearable by constant pulling of heartstrings
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
By Boo Allen
Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. Opens Friday.
Film Critic
Movies, as well as people, have built-in embargoes. The shameless new tearjerker Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close tests certain limits for both people and movies. Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, movies have stepped lightly around the subject, with a few of the efforts stumbling embarrassingly (anyone remember Remember Me?), while people who suffered through the same event in real life struggled with the longevity of their grief. Extremely Loud handles both subjects clumsily. The film is based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel and directed by Stephen Daldry, with screenplay by Eric Roth. The film goes all out, putting a suffering 9-year-old child up for their main character and then letting him push buttons guaranteed to send many searching for hankies. If grief is worse and more magnified in a child, Daldry never relents, constantly pushing the face of Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) into every possible situation to stretch out the emotional trauma. When first seen, Oskar and his father Thomas (Tom Hanks) play freely, enjoying each other’s company with love and without care. Oskar spends a year in suspension after his dad dies in the one of the towers — one of the first tropes to be manipulated for effect. He then discovers his life’s purpose, and the film’s main narrative, when he finds an unidentified key his father left behind. Oskar uses the tracking and detective
skills he learned with his father and traipses around New York’s five boroughs to find out what the key unlocks. In between Oskar’s ramblings, he delivers a surplus of nauseating narration, an often perky monologue that sounds like it came straight from an adult novelist or screenwriter, instead of a precocious child. And before long, regardless of his grief and the situation, Oskar’s fits, tantrums and belligerence make him more annoying than the main character in a film should be. Yes, he grieves the loss of his father, but Oskar still displays too many adult traits of pushiness, arrogance and smugness. And yes, Oskar can still miss his father terribly, but must he make everyone suffer for it, and for how long? For his part, Thomas Horn is asked to carry the film, but the film’s faults cannot be attributed to him. In a throwaway role, Sandra Bullock plays Oskar’s mom Linda, while fine actors Jeffrey Wright and Viola Davis have too little screen time as a couple who connect with Oskar. And, finally, great Swedish actor Max Von Sydow shines in his thankless role as the mysterious “renter,” a possible relative who remains silent the entire movie. Others should have followed his example. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

uca Pisaroni sings the role of Caliban in The Enchanted Island, a world premiere opera that combines baroque-era music with an all-new, English-language story. The score combines selections from more than 30 operas, cantatas and oratorios by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau and other masters of the baroque period. The story, by the English theater artist Jeremy Sams, mashes up two of Shakespeare’s best-known plays. The four young lovers from A Midsummer Night’s Dream find themselves shipwrecked on Prospero’s island from The Tempest, leading to a tortuous web of comic and dramatic romantic entanglements. The cast includes Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax, David Daniels as Prospero and Danielle de Niese as Ariel. The live broadcast is scheduled to air at 11:55 a.m. Saturday at the Cinemark Denton, 2825 Wind River Lane. — Lucinda Breeding voices of Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig and Simon Pegg. Written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Directed by Steven Spielberg. In Imax 3-D. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — LAT Beauty and the Beast 3-D A 3-D version of the classic animated tale about a princess taken captive by a monster who may be more than meets the eye. With the voices of Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White, Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach. Rated G, 84 minutes. — LAT Carnage (###1/2) Roman Polanski directed from Yasmina Resa’s sharptongued play. A Manhattan couple (Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet) visits the home of the parents (Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly) of a boy responsible for injuring their son in a fight. Decorum not only breaks down after a slow decline but ends in a hilarious, no-holds-barred conflagration. Excellent cast and script combine for edgy entertainment. Rated R, 79 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A. Contraband (##1/2) Standard action-thriller with a heavy emphasis on the action. Mark Wahlberg plays a so-called retired smuggler forced into the requisite “last job” to save a relative. He travels to Panama to bring back some illicit booty and becomes involved with an armored car holdup. Naturally, things go awry, as do several other of the film’s copi-
ous plots. With Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Diego Luna. Rated R, 110 minutes. — B.A. The Devil Inside Twenty years after her mother confessed to three brutal murders, a woman travels to Italy and recruits two young exorcists to find out what really happened and set things right. With Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman and Evan Helmuth. Rated R, 87 minutes. — LAT The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (####) Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) forges an unlikely bond with anti-social hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) in this adaptation of the bestselling novel by Stieg Larsson. The pair hunt down the person or parties responsible for the disappearance of Harriet Vanger — a young woman presumed murdered 40 years ago. Harriet’s doting uncle, Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), is compelled to find the evil maniac sending him anonymous reminders of his beloved niece. Stomach-churning violence ensues. Rated R, 158 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding Hugo (####) Martin Scorsese uncharacteristically directs an elegiac, moving 3-D film about Hugo (Asa Butterfield), a boy hiding and living in a Paris train station around 1930. He befriends a toy store owner (Ben Kingsley) who turns out to be George Melies, a forgotten silent film pioneer. Various other subplots from
Brian Selznick’s novel play out with an excellent cast, and are complimented by stunning special effects in which 3-D is, for once, appropriate and put to positive use. Rated PG, 126 minutes. — B.A. The Iron Lady (##1/2) Meryl Streep makes another celebrated appearance, this time as a senior Margaret Thatcher. In her unstable mental state, the elderly Thatcher replays the high and low points of her professional and private life. Strange movie which flits back and forth with little defined viewpoint, making it somewhat mushy. Jim Broadbent plays husband Denis Thatcher, and Streep is, as expected, uncanny, not in her performance but in her imitation. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A. Joyful Noise (##) If some incarnation of Glee were to be developed for the Christian Broadcasting Network, it would probably look a lot like this. It’s not really effective as entertainment, especially during the musical numbers — which theoretically should serve as the most rousing source of emotion, since the film is about a gospel choir — when instead there’s a weird disconnect, a sense that the songs are simultaneously overproduced and hollow, and repeated cutaways to reaction shots of singers nodding and smiling further undermine their cohesion. Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton costar as longtime enemies battling for
control over a small-town Georgia church choir. Keke Palmer and Jeremy Jordan play teens sharing a forbidden love ... through song. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — The Associated Press Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (###1/2) The Impossible Mission Force (Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg) finds itself abandoned just as they need to break into the Kremlin and, later, to scale the world’s tallest building in Dubai. This latest Impossible entry delivers on constant action and white-knuckle sequences, all ably rendered by animation director Brad Bird (The Incredibles), who makes an impressive first effort with humans. See it in Imax for maximum effect. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (##) Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law bicker and banter and bob and weave with diminishing returns in this sequel to the 2009 smash hit Sherlock Holmes. Director Guy Ritchie once again applies his revisionist approach to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary character, infusing the film with his trademark, hyperkinetic aesthetic and turning the renowned detective into a wisecracking butt-kicker. Here, Downey’s Holmes faces off against brilliant supervillain Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who’s cooked up a scheme to pit European nations against each other in hopes of benefiting from the demand for arms. Noomi Rapace tags along for some reason as a gypsy fortuneteller looking for her missing brother. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — AP Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (###) Gary Oldman stars as spy novelist John le Carre’s British secret operative George Smiley. In the 1970s, someone seems to be a double agent for Russia and Smiley returns from recent retirement to find him out. Slow but methodical. Frequent jumps in time, scene and character make this a challenging yet rewarding experience. Rated R, 127 minutes. — B.A. War Horse (##) Steven Spielberg’s glossy rendition of a London play about a magnificent horse bought by a poor English farmer (Peter Mullan). The horse is raised lovingly by his son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) before they are both recruited for duty in World War I. The story travels through consecutive episodes with different owners and protectors of the horse, all the while being tracked by Albert. Overly maudlin yet handsome film never rises above the mundane. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — B.A. We Bought a Zoo (##) The father (Matt Damon) of a troubled family buys a troubled Los Angeles zoo. Together the zoo and family formulaically recover. And, of course, dad has a romance with one of the zoo workers (Scarlett Johansson). Sappy, imminently forgettable yet familyfriendly film from underachieving director Cameron Crowe. Well photographed by Rodrigo Prieto. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A.
