Hart makes strings sing pop

D

aniel Hart isn’t from Denton. But his musical sensibilities could have easily grown out of the local indie scene.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

The Dallas musician has a date at Dan’s Silverleaf on Sunday night with Roy Robertson and Jacob Metcalf, and judging by his album, The Orientalist, Hart writes lyrics with a crooked grin and a polite, Midwestern posture. (He’s ultimately a Kansas boy, so that makes good sense.) Hart plays violin and sings — an idea that might seem easy to dismiss if the musician didn’t have that quality most associated with Rufus Wainwright — matching dark, slightly funny ideas with up-tempo music that sounds like candy to the ear but weighs on the gut like a good cut of meat. Hart is able to suspend his gentlemanly ways on songs like “Black Licorice,” which borrows the Police’s “de doodoo-doo-de-da-da-da” chorus and laces it into shrill, scratchy guitar, pummeling drumbeats and raspy vocals.

Dallas singer-violinist Daniel Hart marries symphonic sounds and shoe-gazing pop. He plays Dan’s Silverleaf on Sunday. The sound injects a sexy sort of danger in a song about wanting nothing more than to stand back and eat black licorice. In “God of Small Things,” Hart channels filmmaker Zhang Yimou’s soundscapes, warping his violin around rests and setting the scene for the song’s reverb-filled remains. He explores the details that make for ecstatic discovery but that are buried by familiarity: “But with you/I would wish for you something different/A quiet place down by the river/a gentle breeze to calm the air

… Let’s stick to the small things/and never let go.” In the end, “God of Small Things” winds East and West together in a slight but satisfying symphony that reveals Hart’s spot-on sensibilities and his intuitive musicianship. OPENING FRIDAY

Albert Nobbs (##1/2) Two Oscarnominated performances elevate this otherwise one-note story of a woman (Glenn Close) who passes for a man while working in a hotel in late 19th-century Ireland. Janet McTeer plays her boisterous friend with the same secret. Once the main premise is set up by director Rodrigo Garcia, little else gains narrative traction. Rated R, 113 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen Man on a Ledge (##) This socalled thriller about a disgraced cop (Sam Worthington) who threatens to jump off a building to divert attention from a heist going on across the street isn't even implausible in a fun way. Ledge is so cliched and reheated, it almost feels like a parody of a generic action picture — only no one seems to be in on the joke. At the center is a bland Worthington — doing a horrible job of disguising his Australian accent — as Nick Cassidy, a fugitive who insists he was wrongly imprisoned. As Nick teeters along the title ledge, his brother Joey (Jamie Bell) and Joey’s stereotypically saucy Latina girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez) are trying to pull off a real burglary across the street. With Edward Burns, Elizabeth Banks, Kyra Sedgwick and Ed Harris. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — The Associated Press One for the Money A newly divorced, recently laid-off woman (Katherine Heigl) lands a job with a shady bail-bond business and gets swept up in a world of murder and deception. With Jason O’Mara and Daniel Sunjata. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

Anything but bland he Grey is an exhausting movie. Before completion, it confronts a series of frights and fears conjured not by the demonic, computergenerated sort, but instead by dangers both natural and manmade. Joe Carnahan (Narc, 2010’s The A-Team) co-wrote, with Ian Mackenzie Jeffers (author of the source short story Ghost Walker), and directs The Grey, filling it with with realistic obstructions for its main group of plagued characters.

Carnahan and Jeffers set up the basic premise and then drag a dwindling party of seven through some gruesome encounters with an array of fierce predators. Liam Neeson stars as John Ottway, hired by an Alaskan oil company to shoot and kill wolves who threaten the working humans. His obviously troubled state is reflected in a brief early scene in which he looks like he might commit suicide. In these short, inchoate

scenes, Carnahan creates an ominous atmosphere with a flurry of brief images, a polished proficiency unseen in his earlier films. Ottway joins a group of other oil field workers on an air flight. It malfunctions and crashes in the middle of nowhere, leaving only a small group alive to fight the brutal winds and subzero cold. They quickly discover they have also landed in the middle of an area heavily populated with wolves. The group of seven follows a predicted path laid down by survivalist films. The formula calls for the arrogant one, the nerdy one and so on, but all led by wolf expert Ottway, who generates resentment before becoming the de facto leader. The consistent drama comes

to an unknown starlet (Berenice Bejo) who then helps him recover his life and career. Charming mix of comedy and pathos makes this one of the year's joys. And with the best ending of any film this year. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — B.A. Beauty and the Beast 3-D A 3-D version of the classic animated tale

about a princess taken captive by a monster who may be more than meets the eye. With the voices of Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White, Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach. Rated G, 84 minutes. — LAT Contraband (##1/2) Standard action-thriller with a heavy emphasis on the action. Mark Wahlberg plays a

so-called retired smuggler forced into the requisite “last job” to save a relative. He travels to Panama to bring back some illicit booty and becomes involved with an armored car holdup. Naturally, things go awry as do several other of the film’s copious plots. With Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Diego Luna. Rated R, 110

in the perils the men face and how the men overcome them — or don’t. Some of the special effects, including variable quality green screen projections, animal animatronics, and even some puppetry, come from respected effects supervisor Greg Nicotero and his team. One of the most chilling moments of the film, or any film, comes in a scene in which a large pack of wolves descends on the men at night. Their growls can be heard but all that can be seen are the illuminated sets of eyes peering in on them, seemingly ready to pounce. It’s chilling, much like the rest of this unnerving work.

he musician-teachers of Rise and Dream had just a week in November 2007 to light a fuse that could turn sound and fury into a new life for 13 Filipino teenagers. They gave it their all, and so did the young musicians — in spite of the innumerable odds brought about by abject poverty and hardscrabble, random violence that are their companions from birth. The Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, a lay Catholic organization that teams up with citizens who live in extreme poverty both through direct mission work and through donor sponsorship, decided to extend its work with the Filipino youths and, over the following years, create a film about the concert that grew out of that weeklong workshop. Denton’s Thin Line Film Fest will screen the world premiere of the documentary next month on the second day of the 10-day festival in downtown Denton.

Director Judy-Anne Goldman said the film began as a foundation project several years ago. “Anywhere we go to do project work, we take John [Nosack, foundation cinematographer],” Goldman said. “We went to Zamboanga [a city in the southern Philippines]. We were there with our composer, Barclay Martin, to do a one-week workshop to teach Filipino youth to play traditional Filipino music. In all, there ended up being 50 kids from Zamboanga who came. Some of them really engaged, and some not so much. There ended up being 13 kids who agreed to work with us to do a concert.” Goldman said that most of the story on film took place after the one-week workshop. The 13 young men and women volunteered to help the foundation put on a concert for their community. Rehearsals and preparation for the concert took place after the workshop and lasted about two months from November ’07 to January 2008. Accomplished Filipino musicians joined Martin and Paul Pearce, the film’s producer and a reliable guitarist, in rehearsals. The film builds to the concert, but the breakout stars of the documentary are the plucky young Filipinos who surprise themselves with their potential and ability, and who surprise the viewer with their indomitable hope, a spirit that wiggles from under the thumb of the twin oppressions of terrorism and

poverty. Goldman said it wasn’t difficult to grow fond of the children, a sentiment Pearce confirms in his biography posted on the film’s website. Smiles are mostly big and ready — save one young man who said he “didn’t know how to smile” before joining the little ensemble. The group learns to play kulintangan, a set of bowl-like gongs lined along a rack and hit with bamboo beating sticks; a split bamboo drum called the agong; the kubing, a bamboo reed that hums when the musician blows through it; and the bandurria, a stringed instrument that sounds much like the mandolin. The concert drew 10,000 people, and the young musicians also performed the tinikling, a Filipino dance in which two performers rap two large bamboo poles together and on the ground as dancers step over and between them. The music is one of the rare activities the youths do for themselves. In Zamboanga, impoverished children often pick through heaps of trash for useful or valuable materials and objects. They sell snacks and trinkets on street corners to help their families keep the electricity running in their oftramshackle homes. “It’s not just children who’ve gone through puberty who work,” Goldman said. “It’s children younger than that. These children live in homes where the father might go out and ride a pedicab, and he’ll bring home maybe $5 a day. And the mother might take in laundry or stay at home to take care of the children. These families are sometimes living on less than $10 a day.” In one vignette, a young Filipino man in the ensemble takes the film crew on a tour through his small, clean house. “This is where we all sleep, all five of us,” the boy says, motioning at a spotless floor that looks about the size of a horse stall. What look like woven mats are strung together to make screens — or walls. “Big, isn’t it?” he says. Goldman said the music is traditional, but the musicians

ABOUT THE NONPROFIT BEHIND THE MOVIE The Christian Foundation for Children and Aging is a lay Catholic organization that has been fighting poverty in 22 countries over the last 30 years. The organization helps children and teens in impoverished regions enter and stay in school through donated financial sponsorships. The organization helps the elderly in impoverished regions maintain their health and independence through sponsorships, too. The group sends volunteers to areas for specific projects that help children, teens and the elderly develop and keep skills that ease or erase the most devastating effects of poverty and violence. The projects are about personal and economic growth, rather than distributing goods.

are living in multicultural region where residents are Muslim, Catholic and indigenous in terms of religious identity. “They are really at a crossroads of culture,” Goldman said. “A lot of cultures have contributed to life in the Philippines. There are some great Filipino musicians who love this program, and some of them took on teaching these traditional instruments and music, and actually became the opening act at the concert.” The documentary also

reflects a more contemporary form of Catholic mission work. Historically, Catholicism has been criticized for forced conversions of the people colonized by missionaries — and for forcing cultural practices and art into obsolescence. The foundation seeks neither conformity nor conversion when volunteers travel to do projects or bring aid after disasters. “We believe that we’ve been called to serve the poor,” Goldman said. “We have nothing but respect for the people we serve, and we feel blessed by

We never seek to oppress or convert. We only work to serve the poor.” The documentary has been submitted to a number of film festivals, and Goldman said the foundation expects to hear from festival organizers in the coming weeks.

“We’re proud to have our world premiere with Thin Line, and we’re excited to share the film with audiences,” she said. Members of the film crew and the foundation will attend the Feb. 11 screening. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

Rated R, 99 minutes. — B.A. The Descendants (####) George Clooney stars in director Alexander Payne’s film about a rich Hawaiian whose wife lies in a coma while he must deal with dispersing huge land holdings for his extended family. His two young daughters resent him, causing greater obstacles as he tries to hold the family together. Payne deftly portrays a man under fire trying to act gracefully. Rated R, 115 minutes. — B.A. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (##) A child (Thomas Horn) loses his father (Tom Hanks) in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on New York City. He takes more than a year to come out of his withdrawal as he traipses through the city’s five boroughs on a chaotic quest. Clumsy, mawkish film manipulates the audience for its cheap effects. Rated PG13, 129 minutes. — B.A. Haywire (##1/2) Mixed martial arts star and impressive newcomer Gina Carano plays Mallory, a rogue governmental agent who travels the globe to demolish a series of adversaries (including Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender) in order to find out who double- and triple-crossed her. Director Steven Soderbergh keeps things fast and brainless. Rated R, 93 minutes. — B.A. Joyful Noise (##) If some incarnation of Glee were to be developed for the Christian Broadcasting Network, it would probably look a lot like this. It’s not really effective as entertainment, especially during the musical numbers — which theoretically should serve as the most rousing source of emotion, since the film is about a gospel choir — when instead there’s a weird disconnect, a sense that the songs are simultaneously overproduced and hollow, and repeated cutaways to reaction shots of singers nodding and smiling further undermine their cohesion. Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton costar as longtime enemies battling for control over a small-town Georgia church choir. Keke Palmer and Jeremy Jordan play teens sharing a forbidden love ... through song. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (###1/2) The Impossible Mission Force (Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg) finds itself abandoned just as they need to break into the Kremlin and, later, to scale the world’s tallest building in Dubai. This latest Impossible entry delivers on constant action and white-knuckle sequences, all ably rendered by animation direc-

tor Brad Bird (The Incredibles), who makes an impressive first effort with humans. See it in Imax for maximum effect. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A. Red Tails This World War II historical drama tells the story of the black fighter pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen. With Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Ne-Yo and Terrence Howard. Written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder. Directed by Anthony Hemingway. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — LAT Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (##) Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law bicker and banter and bob and weave with diminishing returns in this sequel to the 2009 smash hit Sherlock Holmes. Director Guy Ritchie once again applies his revisionist approach to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary character, infusing the film with his trademark, hyperkinetic aesthetic and turning the renowned detective into a wisecracking butt-kicker. Here, Downey’s Holmes faces off against brilliant supervillain Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who’s cooked up a scheme to pit European nations against each other in hopes of benefiting from the demand for arms. Noomi Rapace tags along for some reason as a gypsy fortuneteller looking for her missing brother. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — AP Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (###) Gary Oldman stars as spy novelist John le Carre’s British secret operative George Smiley. In the 1970s, someone seems to be a double agent for Russia and Smiley returns from recent retirement to find him out. Slow but methodical. Frequent jumps in time, scene and character make this a challenging yet rewarding experience. Rated R, 127 minutes. — B.A. Underworld: Awakening After 12 years in captivity, the vampire warrior Selene escapes and enters a new world in which humans are waging war on her kind and werewolves. With Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea and Michael Ealy. Written by Len Wiseman, John Hlavin, J. Michael Straczynski and Allison Burnett. Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein. In 3-D. Rated R, 88 minutes. — LAT War Horse (##) Steven Spielberg’s glossy rendition of a London play about a magnificent horse bought by a poor English farmer (Peter Mullan). The horse is raised lovingly by his son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) before they are both recruited for duty in World War I. The story travels through consecutive episodes with different owners and protectors of the horse, all the while being tracked by Albert. Overly maudlin yet handsome film never rises above the mundane. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — B.A. We Bought a Zoo (##) The father (Matt Damon) of a troubled family buys a troubled Los Angeles zoo. Together the zoo and family formulaically recover. And, of course, dad has a romance with one of the zoo workers (Scarlett Johansson). Sappy, imminently forgettable yet familyfriendly film from underachieving director Cameron Crowe. Well photographed by Rodrigo Prieto. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A.
