Trails of Cross Timbers Park

Regarded as the historic college town of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Denton is a local hotspot for music, art, and a unique atmosphere. This charming reputation sometimes overshadows the city’s appeal for outdoor recreation, and area residents may be surprised to also discover Denton as a scenic getaway. In addition to its neighborhood parks and playgrounds, Denton offers major trails and special-interest parks.

On the north end of Denton, visitors can enjoy open scenery while visiting Denton’s water park or free, fully equipped skate park. Water Works Park features giant slides and a continuousflowing river, but the park’s amount of green space is not so typical. Along with the fact that coolers and outside food are allowed, guests often take advantage of the park’s calm, grassy areas by setting up for the day and picnicking. Area residents may also take pleasure in Denton’s more unique facilities. Located in Lake Forest Park, Wiggly Field Dog Park provides dog stations, both human and pet drinking fountains, and fenced areas to separate large and small dogs. Across town, hobbyists and athletes can advantage from a variety of facilities such as a batting range, a golf practice center, a disc golf course, and a radio-control aircraft runway.

Water Works Park

Online users can discover Denton’s parks and trails by visiting the “Parks and Trails” page on the City of Denton Parks and Recreation website, www.dentonparks.com. The site gives the option to explore with an interactive map or browse through the parks and trails listing. Each park page features photos, directions, and a list of the park’s amenities.

Interactive map at www.dentonparks.com

The Denton Parks and Recreation Department also utilizes the city’s extensive facilities by offering “enriching” programs, including annual fun runs, free movies in the park, and a community fishing program. Through the department’s outdoor recreational program, area residents can even explore Denton’s creeks and trails with skilled staff and knowledgeable volunteers. The program allows participants to kayak, canoe, hike, and geocache without having previous experience or their own equipment. Additional information on activities and programs is also available at the department’s website.

DCTA plans better efficiency in 2012 By Bj Lewis Staff Writer

Coming to you in 2012: a better, more efficient Denton County Transportation Agency. Optimism and expectations are high for the transit agency for the New Year as officials plan for changes to service, vehicles and long-range planning that will benefit present and future riders. “2012 is going to be the first year where DCTA has been a true operating agency,” said Dee Leggett, vice president of communications and planning. “We have been capital intensive for so long with the planning and building of the A-train, we’re looking forward to maintaining

and improving our investment and our service to our customers.” That maintenance plan includes short term improvements in the next five years and amendments to the agencies 25year plan which includes implementing new transit corridors. DCTA president Jim Cline said officials are starting to set conditions for future success. “Our long range service plan talks about a number of things not currently funded, we want to eliminate any barriers.” Leggett said the agency is already moving toward implementing the short-term improvements with extended services for the A-train, making

better connections with bus schedules and looking at additional places in Denton and Lewisville that need bus service. The agency has been sifting through public input gained by a community-wide survey launched in the middle of November and will use the responses in future plans. “We know where we want to get, but the survey will inform us to which services are priorities,” she said. An example is changes to mid-day bus service. Currently the A-train stops running (between 2:30 to 3 p.m.) at which time the agency runs a mid-day bus service. That service has been less than satisfacto-

ry to riders who want the train to run all day. “That is something we will look closely in 2012,” Leggett said. Leggett also said the agency is looking at extending Route 9, which was a university-centric route that only ran during the school year. A boom in ridership to the route has agency officials looking at how to make it more permanent and throughout the day. Leggett said there will be minor schedule changes in January and then the agency will likely roll out with schedule changes with additional service See DCTA on Page 7

Board members must have professional experience in the field of transportation, business, government, engineering or law. In accordance with DCTA By-laws, the Board adopts the annual operating budget and is responsible for setting policy. The meetings begin at 3 p.m. in the DCTA Board Room, 1660 S. Stemmons, Suite 250, Lewisville. The agenda for each Board meeting is posted on the Denton County official bulletin board located at 1450 E. McKinney Street, Denton. The agenda is also posted on the DCTA website

The agency will roll out a full fleet of the new cars by August, a move that will give the rail service greater operating efficiencies, Leggett said. The newer cars utilizes less fuel, allow the service to transition from 25 minute frequencies between trips to 20 minutes, bike storage, level boarding for people in wheelchairs, strollers and greater overall train capacity.
