35 Denton locks up Jesus and Mary Chain

rganizers of 35 Denton announced Tuesday that the Jesus and Mary Chain is booked for next month’s downtown music festival.

Probably best known for the single “Take It,” the Jesus and Mary Chain rose to prominence in the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Hailing from Scotland and structured mostly around brothers Jim and William Reid, the Jesus and Mary Chain made a record that managed to claw its way out of the synth-heavy pop soundscape of the day, pairing groaning harmonies over grinding, rumbling guitars. They also knew how to appropriate killer melodies — “Half Way to Crazy” was lifted (consciously or not) from Nick Gilder’s “Hot

Child in the City” circa 1978.

Another Scottish indie rock group, the Soup Dragons, were hot on the Chain’s heels.

The Jesus and Mary Chain leaven 2012’s festival, which has announced that it’s serving up notable hip-hop (Bun B and G-side) and poppy-punk (Dum Dum Girls) acts thus far.

Portland duo Talkdemonic has an epic and emotional sound that is all their own. No particular genre can describe it.

Screaming violins and cellos are layered over hard-hitting, sometimes fast, percussive beats and programming.

“Some publications will try and put us in a genre, but every listener experience will be a bit different,” percussionist Kevin O’Connor said.

Made up of O’Connor and Lisa Molinaro, Talkdemonic just released its fourth album, Ruins. The band had a little help at the mixing board from Isaac Brock, the Modest Mouse guitarist and vocalist who owns Glacial Pace Recordings. The album features 12 melodic tunes that are sure to engage.

O’Connor started playing the trumpet in middle school, transitioned to guitar in high school and then began playing drums in college. He was in another band 10 years ago, then spent a year solo before forming Talkdemonic. He began playing with Molinaro, a classically trained musician, in 2004.

Instrumentation and exhalation Trio in Breathe Owl Breathe does what comes naturally

“To be honest, we don’t read too much about ourselves.”

Trevor Hobbs is the percussionist for the Michigan trio Breathe Owl Breathe. He’s also stumped when a journalist cites Nick Drake — he of Pink Moon fame — as a sonic double for the band and the number of times the band is lumped in with Drake.

“It’s actually a deliberate thing, the decision not to read what people say about us,” Hobbs said.

Breathe Owl Breathe does whimsy without being silly and folk without being precious.

Lead singer Micah Middaugh has a talky way of singing, and cellist-singer Andrea MorenoBeals nearly sighs her vocals while Hobbs keeps a gentle beat and layers in metallic taps and rattles.

The band has been touring in support of its 2010 album, Magic Central, the follow up to 2009’s Ghost Glaciers.

“I think for Magic Central, we were trying to do most of the instrumentation ourselves,” Hobbs said. “We had some friends who helped us out on the instrumentation and different things for Ghost Glaciers, and we knew on Magic Central we wanted to do them ourselves. So we had to experiment with a lot of different things.”

It’s spare and suggestive, an album that is quiet, spacious and lonely. Glaciers sounds like it might have been written as a contemporary chamber music record, which Hobbs attributes to the “cello-focused” nature of the record.

The experiment also nudged the threesome to rethink the way they make music.

“We try to use a different creative process on every project,” Hobbs said. “It is kind of risky, because you never know what

you’re going to get. But that also means that you might discover some things you never expected to find.”

That’s not to say that Magic Central is loud. It isn’t. But each of the 12 tracks on the album seem to billow out from a seed of melody. And most of the music on the album feels happy, if serenely so.

In “Swimming,” Hobbs provides the bubbles that float to the surface and pop with a melodic ping. Even “Lion’s Jaw” has an all’s-well-that-ends-well feel to it. Hobbs isn’t just a metronome, either. His rhythms provide tones and notes, too.

“A big part of creating these songs, for us, is learning them on tour,” Hobbs said. “A version

of a song might exist only live, and we do it that way on tour, and then when we go into the studio, we realize that there are a bunch of different ways to do a song, and then when we go back out on tour, we play it differently.”

The band will have a limited number of their latest project, a book that comes with a 7-inch record. The book includes two tales inspired by true stories, “The Listeners (The Mole & the Ostrich)” and “These Train Tracks.”

The band is touring the Southwest briefly with solo artist Laura Gibson.

These days, the term “meltdown� carries connotations of flagging mental health. In the context of the Mind Spiders’ album, this meltdown could be just what we all needed.

oprano Deborah Voigt sings the role of Brunnhilde for the first time with The Metropolitan Opera in the company’s new production of Götterdämmerung, the final opera in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, led by Met principal conductor Fabio Luisi and directed by Robert Lepage.

Denton opera buffs can catch it at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cinemark Denton, 2825 Wind River Lane. Don’t come expecting a feature-length show, though; Götterdämmerung runs six hours, 25 minutes long.

Tickets cost $24 for general admission, $22 for seniors and $16 for children.

The opera will be transmitted live around the world as part of “The Met: Live in HD” series. The Denton presentation of Götterdämmerung will be hosted by University of North Texas College of Music graduate Patricia Racette.

‘Journey 2’ sinks Verne’s isle in brainless 3-D muck

The actors make an effort with the interminable repartee they’re given to mutter, but the presence of actors as good as Caine and Guzman only highlights how dreadful and dumb the banter is.

The 3-D images have improved greatly since the first Journey, but even more this time, the filmmakers play a game of “made you flinch” with cheap shots of objects hurtling off the screen. Good for a giggle at a theme park attraction, good for some groans and grousing when paying a 3-D premium to park your carcass in a theater for 90 minutes.

The root of the franchise is kind of clever, updating Verne’s novels to our times by pretending they weren’t fantasies but chronicles of actual expeditions. And Journey 2 has its heart in the right place as a family-friendly adventure that might interest some kids in checking out Verne’s books.

If only the movie had the hint of a brain.

here’s little mystery about Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

This 3-D sort-of sequel wears its formula-for-dollars purpose with pride, delivering a dash of cinematic nonsense that represents Hollywood calculation at its most shameless.

Again poking Jules Verne’s remains with a sharp stick, the producers of the 2008 hit Journey to the Center of the Earth present their second modern take on the 19th-century fantasist’s wild stories.

And Mysterious Island is every bit the amusement park ride cloaked as a movie that the first Journey was, the new flick stranding a misfit band of adventurers on Verne’s lost island of freakish creatures.

What this one lacks by comparison is the relative novelty of digital 3-D, which was in its infancy for mainstream theatrical releases when Journey to the Center of the Earth came out.

It also lacks the likable goof

factor of Brendan Fraser, who starred in the first movie but isn’t back for the second.

Dwayne Johnson steps in this time, and while he tries to yuck it up amid the nonstop action, he’s just not a goofball on the order of Fraser, who somehow can make extreme silliness palatable with that big, simpering grin of his. Johnson, on the other hand, merely simpers.

Journey 2 also features a change of directors, with Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) overseeing a collection of impressive but annoying visuals, serving up gimmicky 3-D that’s continually trying to poke

things in your eye.

Johnson stars as ex-Navy guy Hank, stepfather to troublesome teenager Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first Journey).

In its rushed and clunky opening minutes, Journey 2 establishes that Sean’s a badboy genius who resents his stepdad; bonds the two in a scene that shows Hank’s an OK guy and Sean’s not such a bad boy and not such a genius; sends them off to the South Pacific in search of Sean’s grandfather (Michael Caine), who sent a cryptic transmission that he had found Verne’s supposedly fictional island; and lands them in the company of helicopter pilot Gabato (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful daughter, Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens), who ferry the visitors to the remote isle.

Size matters to the filmmakers here, which might be why they signed up Johnson, a coproducer as well as star, who strains for some laughs with an overdone gag about his massive

plane downed in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness. They must fight for survival not only against the elements but also against a ferocious pack of wolves. Liam Neeson stars as

Labor of love

I

t might not seem like it from the outside, but the organizers of the Thin Line Film Fest all have a soft spot for love.

Sure, documentaries are known for being about facts, real-life reflections and — on many occasions — political.

But come Tuesday (that’s Valentine’s Day for readers with cold, pea-sized hearts or blind spots), the festival surrenders its biggest screen for an afternoon of love.

Before you roll your eyes and head for the recycling bin, Tuesday’s compilation of short documentaries isn’t just about the sappy stuff. It’s about all sorts of love — and different kinds of passion.

In other words, if you crave some quiet time with the big screen on Cupid’s busiest day but you simply can’t stomach a rom-com (or any other stripe of chick flick), consider some of these bite-size stories about amour. Or all of them.

hardwired to connect In the “real world” (meaning our bricks-and-mortar realm) the odds of robot inventor Tim Heath meeting Sarita were slim. But thanks to the wealth of online dating pools, the couple connected, met and then got married the next day.

LOVE HACKING is director Jenni Nelson’s short film about two souls meeting in cyberspace and locking down their happily ever after.

The story is ripe for a movie, too. Maybe even an East-meets-West musical from a Hollywood studio.

Heath, a devout Mormon, experiences a life change that shakes him out of his circuit-board haven and gets him looking for a mate on the world stage.

Meanwhile, Sarita is making some changes of her own — in Nepal.

She’s left behind the Hinduism of her childhood and her culture and converted to Christianity. Both secure accounts on “LDS Planet,” a global, online dating service that aims to make love connections between Mormons. After a three-month courtship, Heath boards a plane to meet his fiance. In the end, he applies his opensource computing philosophies to marriage.

mother love What is a woman to do when she learns she has breast cancer, and that she might not live to see her son grow up?

In MIJO, filmmaker Chithra Jeyaram follows a woman in that very predicament. Taken from a larger film titled Foreign Puzzle, Mijo (My Son) chronicles the life of a single mom who teaches school, studies modern dance and struggles to make a future for her young son. Jeyaram drives home the fact that relationships are imperfect, and yet intimate ties can sustain children and adults when both are facing fear and mortality.

Mariachi bands are about the lovelorn, howling male voice.

Machismo is social currency.

IRMA puts a half-nelson on all that. Filmmaker Charles Fairbanks traveled to the rough streets of Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl to follow Irma Gonzalez, who was once the world champion of women’s professional wrestling — or should it be las dama gran de la lucha libre?

Fairbanks lets the cameras roll while Gonzalez recalls her life as a woman who flexed her muscles in a man’s world. An added bonus?

Gonzalez’s reflections are recounted in music written and performed by the champion herself.

Running time: 12 minutes Goes good with: Skeptics who believe passions are best complimented by self-discipline and that all drama is better with capes and masks.

Staff ducks behind a hand, grins and says: VALENTINE’S “Say ‘lesbian’ to everyone here.”

The short films start at The film doesn’t actually insist that Staff is 6 p.m. Tuesday at the the oldest living lesbian. The hyperbole is Campus Theatre. meant to break the ice on what could be a sad story, but ultimately isn’t. Nearing 100, Bobbie reflects on her youth, which was full of fun, lust and lots of courtship.

Sure, the central figure in this film uses a cane and has a headful of silver hair. But she still has a sparkle in her eye and an appreciation for female charms.
