OPENING FRIDAY
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter, the supernatural antihero Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage) risks everything to team with a rebel monk to save a young boy and himself. With Ciaran Hinds, Violante Placido and Johnny Whitworth. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Rampart (##) The crazy eyes and idiosyncratic drawl of Woody Harrelson are enough to carry this dirty cop study, but even such powers as those cannot make engaging this weary L.A. noir. Harrelson’s intense and committed performance keeps Oren Moverman’s film moving, even while the grim and overdone story wallows affectedly. Harrelson plays corrupt cop Dave Brown in 1999 Los Angeles, in the notoriously scandal-plagued Rampart division. Harrelson dominates the picture, but Brown’s unraveling feels increasingly unrealistic and uninteresting. With Robin Wright, Cynthia Nixon, Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver and Steve Buscemi. Rated R, 108 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — The Associated Press This Means War (###) Having great-looking actors who actually can act makes this noisy romp more tolerable than it ought to be. It’s essentially a love-triangle version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith rendered even more bombastic in the hands of Charlie’s Angels director McG. Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon). Screwball and hightech, it aims to provide laughs and thrills at the same time, and only intermittently achieves its goals. Rated PG-13, 97 minutes. — AP W.E. In 1998, an unhappily married woman in New York City becomes obsessed with the love story of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, whose estate is being auctioned off. With Andrea Riseborough, Abbie Cornish, James D’Arcy and Oscar Isaac. Written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian. Directed by Madonna. Rated R, 118 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — LAT

What the agent thawed ‘Thin Ice’ sets dominoes falling in character study hink of Thin Ice as Wisconsin’s Fargo. The new work from the filmmaking Sprecher sisters uses their native Wisconsin for a probing look at a tortured man. He gives few clues as to why he behaves the way he does, but his troubles escalate even more when he meets someone more terrible than he is. The Sprechers, Karen the writer and Jill the director and co-writer, turn out too few movies. Thin Ice is their third in 15 years — after Clockwatchers and Thirteen Conversations About One Thing. Their films are obvious
labors of love, as evinced by the care put into them. Thin Ice also shows this intense attention, with a well-crafted story complementing the consistent directoral touches that can be seen, and appreciated, with close viewing. Besides the cold and snow, Thin Ice resembles Fargo by also examining the destructive consequences of an unintended act. And then, the outcome that could have been averted is only set into motion by someone doing the dumbest thing imaginable.
This willful ignorance marks a defining flaw in Mickey Prohaska (Greg Kinnear): If he had done the right thing at first, none of the bad would have come later. But then we’d have no movie. Prohaska owns a Kenosha, Wis., insurance agency. He gives motivational speeches and is a local business success. But he stretches the truth constantly, to put it lightly. Even when he tries to do the right thing, he messes it up, such as in the opening scene when he declines the advances of an amorous drunk. He has his billfold stolen, however, and is later blamed by his already estranged wife (Lea Thompson) of infidelity. Prohaska’s troubles compound when his newly hired agent (David Harbour) signs an eccentric farmer (Alan Arkin) to an expensive insur-

When Prohaska makes a wrong snap decision, it brings in an unhinged locksmith (Billy Crudup), a murder, false insurance claims and a constantly revolving plot that brings everything and everyone into question. The Sprechers have crafted an involving story, one in which the twists and turns engulf the viewer while also providing some white-knuckle tension and suspense. he feature film in the Friday night lineup of Thin Line Film Fest is bound to unsettle audiences. Bullycam is a movie about 16-year-old Kelly Wilson (Bettina Taylor), who decides to start filming the nonstop abuse she endures at the hands of her high school classmates. Particularly disturbing is the physical threats and intimidation of Kelly’s female classmates. Lisa (Lindsay Arber) and Marissa (Jenn Machover) go way past the mean-girl antics we normally associate with varsity-level queens and enter the realm of terroristic threat. Director Brian Sizensky, 27, of New York, said he was inspired to make the movie after Phoebe Prince, an Irish teenager who moved to Massachusetts, committed suicide after enduring relentless torment at South Hadley High School. Nine teens were indicted afterward on charges of statutory rape, stalking, criminal harassment, bodily injury and violation of Prince’s civil rights. “That tragedy had a really profound effect on me,” Sizensky said. “We felt that, going into the project, that there was a big unmet need See BULLYCAM on 10

in the way bullying is portrayed. We felt like there needed to be a film that looks at bullying from the point of view of the victim. We wanted to do something from the point of view of the kid who is bullied so relentlessly.” Bullycam isn’t a documentary; it’s filmed in a documentary style, with the viewer taking in scenes that are created to be what Sizensky calls “found footage” style. “Every thing you see on the screen, every scene you see, is there because Kelly wants you to see it,” Sizensky said. The film follows Kelly as her bullies escalate from namecalling and mocking to physical aggression. As Kelly’s isolation grows, so does her silence. The camera, which mostly stays at Kelly’s physical level, creates an intimate urgency for the audience. Though the film is a dramatization, Sizensky said authenticity was a top priority for the crew. “We did a lot of research,” Sizensky said. “It’s hard to turn on the news any more without seeing a story about someone who was terrorized so incredibly. The Phoebe Prince tragedy back in 2010 was really a big part of it. When I heard her story, and about how for three months and no one knew and no one really helped her, I almost couldn’t believe it. We’ve had a lot of people ask us, ‘How can all this stuff happen to one person?’” The “found footage” style isn’t new. Director John Cassavetes (Husbands) is considered a pioneer of cinema verite, a mode of filmmaking in which a director sets up stylized, spontaneous interactions between actors — sometimes to the point of provocation. The convention was popularized again in 1999 with the horror film The Blair Witch Project. The style is still in heavy use today. All three Paranormal Activity films are made in documentary style, with character and unknown actors playing the roles. Cloverfield used the style, and Chronicle, playing now in cinemas, uses “found footage” to

tell the story of a group of high school boys who seem to have superpowers after making an otherworldly discovery. Festival director Josh Butler has defended Thin Line’s practice of quietly accepting a small number of non-documentary films since its founding, and — without fanfare — allowing audiences to tease out the traditional documentaries from the films that simply use documentary practices. The festival is named “Thin Line” in part because documentary filmmaking is inexact. Documentary filmmakers come to the real-life people, stories and conflicts with a point of view — and many major-market documentary films include animations, reenactments and material that is composed instead of captured. Sizensky said he submitted
the film to a documentary festival because it can affect the viewer in the same way, and because the first-person storytelling technique is so often associated with documentary film. “The whole concept is that Kelly Wilson is making the movie herself,” Sizensky said. “This is her story.” Sizensky and writers Vera Hadzi and Mike Marshall were all on the business end of bullying as teens. Their experiences inform the film. “I was bullied a fair amount in middle school,” Sizensky said. “And I remember getting beat up on, getting thrown down, getting punched on and getting kicked on. I didn’t tell anyone this was happening to me. You know, why didn’t I tell anyone? In all honesty, it had to do with feeling ashamed and being so afraid of everything getting worse.” Early festival and viewer feedback has expressed frustration with the main character’s silence and the tacit permission of the adults in the film for bullies to exact whatever price they want from a weaker student. Sizensky said his father revealed that he and his friends were bullied more than 40 years ago, but said none of them chose suicide to relieve their suffering as 21stcentury American preteens and teens have.
If nothing else, Sizensky said, Bullycam condemns the apparent social conspiracy that allows teen and preteen bullies to continue with little or no intervention from adults. Outside of school walls — in Texas at least — Bullycam records behaviors that police consider terroristic threats. “That’s one of the important messages,” Sizensky said. “As adults, we have to be more vigilant. We have to pay attention to bullying and change the way we deal with it. In doing that, maybe kids will become more confident.” Sizensky said he made Bullycam “for the bullied, the bullies and the bystanders.” “That’s what this comes down to, for me,” he said. “People think bullying doesn’t affect their life. But it does. [The film] doesn’t pull any punches in the way it shows the effect it can have on all of us. It’s also for the parents. They’re not always reading the signs, and sometimes they are, but they’re misinterpreting them. “The film is not trying to cast blame on any one group of people. Whether you think bullying affects your life, it does. You’ve been involved in it in some form. One of our goals was that we wanted to avoid sugarcoating what happens.”

Continued from Page 7 story of a group of men in an airplane downed in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness. They must fight for survival not only against the elements but also against a ferocious pack of wolves. Liam Neeson stars as the de facto team leader. Exhausting yet involving saga. Rated R, 114 minutes. — B.A. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (##) This 3-D sort-of sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth wears its formula-for-dollars purpose with pride, delivering a dash of cinematic nonsense that represents Hollywood calculation at its shrewdest and most shameless. Dwayne Johnson stars this time as stepdad to a youth (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first movie) whose family has discovered Verne’s sci-fi stories were true. Joining them as they rush from giant lizards and electric eels are Michael Caine, Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — AP Red Tails This World War II historical drama tells the story of the black fighter pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen. With Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Ne-Yo and Terrence Howard. Written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder. Directed by Anthony Hemingway. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — LAT Safe House (##) “Forgettable” probably isn’t a word you’d expect to use to describe a film starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson and Sam Shepard. But unfortunately, that’s one of the most apt. Washington plays the notorious Tobin Frost, a brilliant former CIA operative who’s turned traitor, selling secrets to any nation or enemy cell willing to buy them. After years on the run, he’s captured and brought to an agency safe house in Cape Town, South Africa, where Reynolds, as the ambitious and idealistic Matt Weston, is its bored minder. Matt longs to prove himself and see some real action in the field, and he gets it sooner than he expects when the house comes under attack and he and Tobin must go on the run. Farmiga, Gleeson and Shepard play the suits back in the United States who are tracking their whereabouts and wondering whether they’re in cahoots. Rated R, 115 minutes. — AP The Vow After waking from a coma caused by a car accident, a newlywed wife copes with severe memory loss while her husband tries to win her heart again. With Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill and Scott Speedman. Rated PG13, 104 minutes. — LAT The Woman in Black Daniel Radcliffe plays grieving young widower Arthur Kipps in this gothic ghost story that marks the revival of Hammer Horror. Kipps travels to a chilly village for his law firm to settle the affairs of a deceased woman. He finds angry, vengeful ghosts in the shadows of the creepy manor, and few friendly faces in town. Rated PG-13, 96 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding
