ilbert & Sullivan’s operetta Pirates of Penzance goes down like tiramisu — it’s a light, fluffy amusement that means to make its audience smile. And yet its easy-on-the-ears libretto is full of technical flourish and puts a vocalist through his or her paces. Paula Homer, director of the University of North Texas Opera Theatre, said Pirates is a starter opera — perfect for the newbie who likes classical music, but isn’t ready to compete with a Wagnerian plot and lots of supertitles. “I think in particular this Gilbert and Sullivan opera has number after number that is a delight,” Homer said. “It’s terrific, and it’s funny.” The story goes like this: Frederic has been indentured to a band of soft-hearted pirates (pillaging might be too bruising for this bunch). Mabel is the daughter of the MajorGeneral Stanley. Frederic and Mabel fall in love in the midst of a mess made up of the major-general’s meddling and the antics of Mabel’s siblings. The opera is a comedic love story wrapped in a playful slap at the English class system, pitting the Cockney accents against the proper Queen’s English of London. The elements of farce make Pirates an approachable project. That W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were chief song-crafters in British light opera of their age means the opera will be performed in

Whitney McGraw and Michael Nau are the duo behind Cotton Jones, a Maryland indie-folk project that marries soul to folk.

otton Jones might be anchored to the Eastern Seaboard, but the music the band makes takes the best things from the musical American past (hymn-like harmonies and an organ, ’60s-era tambourines) and plants them in the now. Hints of urban electronic sneak into the soundscape of the seven-piece group from Cumberland, Md. The band’s 2011 EP, Sit Beside Your Vegetables, is an experiment in retro stylings — but the ching-a-ling tambourine and the wobbly organ strains on “Down Beside ’Em” are a reference. The project is fronted by Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw, with Nau’s

slack-mouthed lyrics mixing with McGraw’s soft, girlish vocals. There’s a pulse of something in the present in each of the tracks. Cotton Jones was cut out for the indie folk genre, to be sure. But the folklore-ish lyrics keep the music from being a rehash of the I-want-to-teach-theworld-to-sing naivete that surfaced from the heftier stuff in the late 1960s. Cotton Jones is on about something. To give its music a bit more weight, there’s a trace of soulful doowop and even a throwback to Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Mak’er” in Cotton Jones’ “Egg on a Sea.” Details: The band stops in Denton on Saturday, sharing the bill with Treelines at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St.

The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door. Sounds like: the lost, slowdance prom songs of the Everly Brothers. Or Bosque Brown’s doe-eyed little sister. For headier fare, get ready for Hailey’s Club on Friday, when Psychedelephant plays. The Fort Worth band crafts a nifty brew of jazzy, electronic music. Sometimes, the band lets the instruments say it all, which means a super-cool bass line grooves around a nice snare rhythm. Then, as on punny-named tracks like

“Giraffter,” a twangy guitar saunters in with just the coy, bluesy attitude it needs to get that mysterious stranger to dance. Psychedelephant is too interesting to be ambient music, and a touch too mathematic to be pop. It’s the kind of music to loosen up to — prepping the bar for that house party, or on the way to the club. Dub-ish rhythm doesn’t detract from the syncopated guitar riffs, and that little kick of R&B doesn’t make the whole affair self-indulgent. This outfit has a little something for the boyfriend who

loves jazz — and his girlfriend who hates it. Details: Psychedelephant shares Friday’s bill with Eden’s Moon and Cerebral Chauffeurs. Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $5 for ages 21 and older, $7 for those younger than 21. Hailey’s is located at 122 W. Mulberry St. Good for: nights when you’re just cruising around, looking for a little trouble. Or as a soundtrack to dress by. Can’t you just see yourself tucking that pocket square into your best jacket while “Rhinostril” is thumping away? — Lucinda Breeding

Story of family, folklore unfolds in beautifully photographed ‘Ultima’

By Boo Allen Film Critic

A precocious yet perpetually cheerful boy comes of age in Bless Me, Ultima, a warmhearted period piece from screenwriter and director Carl Franklin. Based on Rudolfo Anaya’s novel, the lovingly photographed film mixes various elements of its time and place, an amalgam of Latino and Native American folklore as well as local customs, fears and prejudices. Set in 1944 New Mexico, the film’s dusty locales and dated attitudes seem taken from an even greater distance. But Franklin chronicles the interlocking stories of a family and the community in which they live, taking his time to concentrate more on rendering his milieu and its inhabitants than on ratcheting up false dramas and contrived crises. Narrative engagement comes well enough but from an organic interpretation of lives lived under great duress and hardships. In one of the state’s rural, poverty-stricken areas, a closeknit family struggles to survive and maintain equilibrium while three adult sons fight in World War II. At home, the father and mother (Benito Martinez and Dolores Heredia) make ends meet while raising their daughters and remaining young son, Antonio (Luke Ganalon). Into this mix comes Ultima (Miriam Colon), the grandmother who arrives with a reputation of being a witch. She openly admits that she has come to spend her last days, a needless confession taken in stride. She settles in and grows close to Antonio, a dynamic that makes for the bulk of the movie. She never denies her supernatural prowess, instead taking almost boastful pride in her healing powers. And she always takes the time to walk with Antonio, pointing out native plants and their healing

OPENING FRIDAY Dark Skies As an escalating series of disturbing events torments a young suburban family, the husband and wife try to stop the mysterious force targeting them. With Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo and Kadan Rockett. Written and directed by Scott Stewart (Legion). Rated PG-13, 97 minutes. — Los Angeles Times 56 Up (####) Director Michael Apted continues his fascinating, and long-running, cinematic sociological experiment. He once again returns to the same group of around 14 original British natives he has interviewed and profiled every seven years since they were 7 years old in 1964. Now at 56, everyone looks, and is, older, with a little more paunch and a lot less hair. By now, their lives are no longer mysteries, as they reflect on their successes and failures in life, none of which turned out as expected. The result is a bittersweet mixture, beguiling and compelling with every story engaging as the director fleshes out personalities with present-day footage mixing with enough of the back footage so that newcomers to the series will quickly catch up. Not rated, 144 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Snitch When his teenage son is wrongfully accused of a drug-distribution crime, a desperate father cuts a deal with the U.S. attorney to infiltrate a drug cartel on a risky mission. With Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon and Benjamin Bratt. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — LAT

properties, while also providing cinematographer Paula Huidobro an opportunity to capture

the endless New Mexican landscapes and shimmering sunsets. Grandmother and grandson bond, the sons return from war, and Ultima brings a sick man back to health despite local harangues, mostly religious, about her witchcraft. A climactic scene comes when a local mob gathers at the home demanding removal of the sorceress.

The overly abundant narration (from Alfred Molina) creates much of the dominating emotions in various scenes, while the purple prose from the novel frequently shades the proceedings: “Our rivers no longer sang the song of summer.” But such flowerings do not derail the film’s ultimate path of a boy’s bumpy journey toward maturity.

NOW PLAYING Beautiful Creatures (##1/2) Writerdirector Richard LaGravenese's film, based on the first novel in the young adult series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, oozes Southern Gothic eccentricity and some amusing if inconsistent touches of camp. But a strong cast of likable and, yes, beautiful actors can only do so much with the formula in which they're forced to work. Alden Ehrenreich plays a restless teen in small-town South Carolina who’s smitten by a mysterious new girl (Alice Englert). Turns out she's a witch — and she's probably doomed — but could true love with a mortal save her? Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Viola

Davis co-star. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. — The Associated Press Django Unchained (##1/2) In Quentin Tarantino’s new tale of wickedly savage retribution, a black man (Jamie Foxx) gets to rewrite Deep South history by becoming a bounty hunter on a killing spree of white slave owners and overseers just before the Civil War. It’s Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, with the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood. Performances by Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson make the film intermittently entertaining. Rated R, 165 minutes. — AP Escape From Planet Earth In this animated film, a nerdy blue alien endeavors to rescue his brother, a famous astronaut, from the notoriously dangerous planet Earth. With the voices of Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba and George Lopez. Rated PG, 89 minutes. — LAT A Good Day to Die Hard (##1/2) Bruce Willis returns as John McClane, who travels to Moscow when his estranged son Jack (Jai Courtney) faces trial in Moscow. Before long, the father-and-son team faces down criminals and various threats to world security before ending up in Chernobyl. John Moore directed from a script by Skip Woods to deliver an action-packed, completely brainless thriller. Rated R, 97 minutes. — B.A. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters The fairy-tale siblings (Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton) are all grown-up and bagging crones for a living. Rated R, 88 minutes. — AP Identity Thief (##) Identity Thief strands ordinarily enjoyable comics Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman in the middle of nowhere with no help for miles. It’s not just that director Seth Gordon and screenwriter Craig Mazin confuse meanness for hilarity. More fundamentally, the premise is just flawed. Bateman’s mild-mannered accounts processor, Sandy Patterson, discovers that a con artist (McCarthy) has stolen his identity and racked up thousands of dollars in charges. Sandy schleps to Florida to track down the perpetrator and drag her back to Denver to face charges. Rated R, 107 minutes. — AP The Impossible Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star in director J.A. Bayona’s film about a family caught in the 2004 tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. Mama Jessica Chastain plays a woman caring for two traumatized sisters who may be haunted by an evil force. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — AP Safe Haven Newly arrived in a small town in North Carolina, a guarded young woman begins opening up to a widowed store owner and father of two, but soon her dark past begins to catch up with her. Based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. With Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough and David Lyons. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

Universal Pictures

An accounts processor named Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) hauls a con artist (Melissa McCarthy) cross-country to face the music in Identity Thief. Rated PG-13, 115 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Side Effects (####) — If this is indeed Steven Soderbergh’s final film, as he’s said it will be after toying with the notion of retirement for a couple of years now, then intriguingly it feels like he’s coming full cir-

cle in some ways to the film that put him on the map: the trailblazing, 1989 indie Sex, Lies and Videotape. Both movies are about danger, secrets and manipulation, filled with characters who aren’t what they initially seem, all of which Soderbergh depicts with his typically cool

detachment. Rooney Mara is chilling as a troubled Manhattan woman who starts taking a new drug at the urging of her psychiatrist (Jude Law). Bad things happen. Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones co-star. Rated R, 106 minutes. — AP Silver Linings Playbook (##)

Writer-director David O. Russell takes Matthew Quick’s novel about a man (Bradley Cooper) with bipolar disorder who returns from a mental facility to live with his doting mother (Jacki Weaver) and his Philadelphia Eagles-obsessed father (Robert DeNiro). Add another unstable, seemingly unsuited love interest (Jennifer Lawrence) and the results are abrasive histrionics, much yelling and consistent inconsistency. Rated R, 122 minutes. — B.A. Warm Bodies The latest permutation of the zombie screen phenomenon places heart over horror and romantic teen angst over sharp social commentary. The story’s dystopian versions of Romeo and Juliet are Nicholas Hoult’s R — he can’t remember his full name — and Teresa Palmer’s Julie, whose meetcute involves a shoot-’em-up that ends badly for her boyfriend (Dave Franco). Writer-director Jonathan Levine (The Wackness, 50/50) works from Isaac Marion’s youngadult novel. For those open to the idea of a gently goofy mash-up, the film is strong on atmosphere and offers likably low-key, if somewhat bland, charms. Rated PG-13, 97 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Zero Dark Thirty (###) Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) directed this movie concerned with the yearslong process behind finding and then executing Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain stars as the dedicated CIA agent who doggedly continued on a long and tedious journey to piece together the clues that will lead to the film’s final, well-executed assassination sequence. With an excellent supporting cast. Rated R, 157 minutes. — B.A.

That’s saying something, considering that McLaughlin is the director of the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. “I look at the title of the work, then I look at the craftsmanship, and then I

‘Hard & Soft’ selections bind craftsmanship with innovation look for originality,” McLaughlin said. “I want to see evidence of a particular maker on the work.” “Materials: Hard & Soft” is the flagship exhibit of the year for the Greater Denton Arts Council. The show is a national American craft contest, bring-

ing the works of the best potters, quilters, metalsmiths, glass workers and weavers in the country to the Meadows Gallery. Craft is the elevation of objects originally made for a function — such as teapots, quilts and furniture — to a

purely decorative purpose. The title of the show, now in its 26th year, has been the same since its inception, and the show itself has become a challenge to craft artists — either to test the limits of their chosen material and medium, or to toss out their comfortable material altogether. Hence the weaving of wood and plastic, and the crafting of teapots out of fabric. “I like the national focus. It’s an opportunity to see a wide variety of art,”

a blind selection. She studied slides of the work submitted by artists. “I didn’t want to have more than one piece by any artist, but since this was a blind jury process, I had to get the exhibition chair to help me make sure that the artists didn’t get more than one piece,” she said. The idea was for McLaughlin to present as wide of a view as she could, given the submissions. The result is a collection of works that stretch the imagination. Some pieces are clearly meant to make the viewer smile, like Carriage Dress, a silver bracelet by M. Annie Kilborn that covers much of the forearm, suggesting a bodice and ruffle of a gown all while mimicking a suit of armor. Then Michelle Startzman’s brooch, Obscurity, sits like a microscopic organism — maybe an amoeba dividing right there under a slide — with red, spongy-looking cells clustered in the center of a cool and dark dollop of amorphous metal.

Other pieces are a marvel of craftsmanship. Carole P. Kunstadt used a parish psalmody — a book of Psalms for group prayers — dated 1844 and 1849. Kunstadt removed pages from the book and sliced even, tiny strips into them. She sewed the strips together using a sewing machine, then interleaved the strips with fine tis-

sue or gold leaf. In Sacred Poem XVIII, the feather-like pieces of tissue and text form an organic, book-shaped mass emerging from the center of the page. “Materials: Hard & Soft” also includes pieces that show craftsmanship and a certain depth. tation Series, Tea. Pottery is domestic at heart, and Cunningham considers the way two separate things adapt when bonded. The spout of one teapot is covered, the other is open. Two drinkers might be able to drink from the yoked cups at the same time, and yet the real point is probably connected to the opening in each

cup, which means each cup’s contents will mingle in the opposite vessel. Over the years, “Materials: Hard & Soft” has celebrated simple pieces that say so much, but say it without excess. “Hard and soft can mean so many different things,” McLaughlin said. “Hard choices, hard line, soft center or hard shell.
