Unhinged & un-bridaled Play festival pushes audiences to explore extremes
T
he Texas Woman’s University drama program opens its spring semester with a new play festival. BrideZilla, by North Texas playwrights Natalie Gaupp and Steven McGaw, is an eccentric one-act comedy that explores the darker side of the bridal industry. When Dean wakes up on a metal cot with a bandage on his side, he immediately fears that his insane bride-to-be has stolen his kidney. As he begins to put the pieces together, however, Dean realizes things may not be as they appear. Graduate student Nick Irion directs, and the cast includes Jonathan Charles, Paul Engle, Arturo Garcia Jr., Nikki Irion, Taylor Reed and Marshall Warren. Costume design is by Logan Broker. Hayley Yates is assistant director, and Araceli
Radillo is stage manager. The second play is Mark 1 by TWU graduate student Rene Serradet-Fuller. Mark 1 chronicles a senseless act of violence. When a shooter enters His Holy Vessel Baptist Church, taking the lives of several people, it’s up the pastor and his wife to discover the cause of such a tragedy. After learning that the shooter is their lost son, they must come to grips with how their past decisions led to such devastation. The cast includes Stanton Brasher, Bethany Dunn, Jacob Drum, Nick Elmore, Russell Harris, Emily Johns and Sherrie Wollenhaupt. Rebecca McDonald will direct the production. Costume design is by Brittany Fowler. Kathryn Cox serves as stage manager. Krystal Price acts as production manager for the entire festival.
Both shows will run from Feb. 23 through March 4, alternating nightly. BrideZilla performances are 4 p.m. today; 8 p.m. Saturday and March 2; and 2 p.m. March 4. Performances of Mark 1 will be 8 p.m. Friday and March 3, 2 p.m. Sunday and 4 p.m. March 1. All performances will take place in the Redbud Theater Complex, on the northwest side of TWU’s Hubbard Hall, northwest of Administration Drive at Bell Avenue. It’s no easy street ‘Avenue Q’ uses plush puppets to address adults

usic Theatre of Denton breaks ground in the next few weeks as one of the few Texas theater companies mounting the Broadway blockbuster Avenue Q, a mature musical with puppets. Riffing on both Sesame Street and New York City’s real-life alphabet city, Avenue Q finds its young hero, Princeton, striking out on his own in the jungles of adulthood. The plush puppet has to pay the bills, figure out romance and decipher how he fits into the grand scheme of things on Avenue Q, the only Free. Billboard. Given the warm embrace Americana purveyors have given the Damn Quails, it might seem more likely that the duo would get their twangy rocks off at Dan’s Silverleaf. But White and Marshall are just as adept at wrangling country riffs as they do folk, and the two seem to be suckers for a rip-roarer of a dance number. Then, forget the tearin-my-beer melodrama of a sad, sad country tune. On
“Down,” a bluesy, tavern piano gives way to a Confederatestyle snare drum march, and the vocals are a little resigned and a lot devastated. And what is that in the middle of “Down?” A barrel organ? It’s a marriage of blues and country that lets a hint of gospel in without really knowing. Then the Quails spin a slow-burner like “Mary,” a treatise on loss and an ongoing one-sided love affair. anderlust would provide an intriguing double feature with the acclaimed indie drama Martha Marcy May Marlene. Both are about people who search for their true selves in woodsy communes, get sucked into the brainwashing and insularity by a charismatic leader and eventually struggle to escape. One of these films contains poop jokes. Guess which one it is. Yes, Wanderlust proudly wears its sketch-comedy origins on its sleeve (except for the commune’s resident nudist, that is), and that means the gags are as hit-and-miss as you’d imagine. David Wain (Role Models) directs from a script he co-wrote with longtime friend and collaborator Ken Marino, but it’s clear that a lot of improv took place, as well. That’s the bread and but-

ter for these guys and their cast members, with whom they’ve worked in the past on TV (The State, Children’s Hospital) and in movies (Wet Hot American Summer, The Ten). Some jokes get hammered into the ground repeatedly; others go on well past the point of cringe-inducing awkwardness, which is the point. But some do reach the levels of brilliant, unfettered lunacy to which they aspire. Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston co-star as George and Linda, a happily married couple struggling to make do in Manhattan. But like so many Americans the past few years, they lose their jobs and find they can no longer afford the apartment they just bought (Linda Lavin is perfectly dry as
their real estate agent). Reluctantly, they drive down to Atlanta to stay with George’s blowhard brother, Rick (Marino), who lives in a McMansion with his obnoxious son and self-medicating wife (Michaela Watkins, who finds the delicacy in teetering on the brink of coming unhinged). Along the way, though, they stop for the night at a bed and breakfast in northern Georgia. Turns out the place is a hippie enclave called Elysium, run by the self-appointed, self-satisfied guru Seth. (Justin Theroux is awesomely arrogant in the role and virtually unrecognizable beneath his Christ-like hair and beard). The air is thick with pot smoke and the sound of didgeridoos and the scent of patchouli, and George and Linda don’t quite fit in at first. But they end up liking it there so much — and liking the version of themselves that its permissiveness brings out — that they end up staying for a couple weeks. This sets up all kinds of fish-out-of-water antics, especially for Rudd, who
serves as the straight man at the center of these zany caricatures. Kathryn Hahn, Lauren Ambrose, Jordan Peele, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Alan Alda and a startlingly naked Joe Lo Truglio all get chances to shine. There is no real momentum, though, but rather a series of moments: George feels uncomfortable shouting out his emotions. George feels uncomfortable having people watch him on the toilet. George feels uncomfortable with Elysium’s free-love philosophy — even though he has an opportunity to sleep with the gorgeous Eva (a game Malin Akerman). Linda, who’s bounced around throughout her adult life trying various jobs without ever feeling fulfilled, finds a spiritual home here and wants to move in for good. Your expectations are crucial here. If you’re looking for structure, cohesion and narrative drive, you’ll be frustrated and maybe even a little bored. If you can be as open-minded as the drugged-up denizens of Elysium, then it’s all good, brother.

alking to punk rock icon, actor and writer Henry Rollins is a little jarring. Rollins’ slow but steady climb to celebrity and credibility started with his post behind the microphone as the frontman of Black Flag, where he grated his soft palette by screaming and swearing at what counter culturalists have called “The Man” for the past two decades. Over the phone, Rollins is polite, thoughtful and even a little sedate. Rollins’ fans wouldn’t be surprised — the artist has had his own show and is not shy when it comes to interviews. But for those who know him from songs like “Six Pack,” in which his bellows “I’ve got a six pack and nothing to do/I’ve got a six pack and I don’t need you,” Rollins’ serenity is unexpected. The artist and world traveler brings his speaking tour, “The Long March,” to Denton on March 3 at the University of North Texas. The tour is informed especially by his latest book, Occupants. The book combines the photographs he shot in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Northern Ireland with reflections on his life. The photos are a muse for Rollins to explore his past, making Occupants an intimate map of Rollins the person — artist, agitator and citizen. See ROLLINS on 10

Following is an excerpt of a 30-minute telephone interview he gave the Denton Record-Chronicle. DRC I have had this assumption that traveling was something you did a lot as a musician. Did you? HENRY ROLLINS Yeah. We toured America, Canada, Northern Ireland, Norway ... Finland, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, [the] Czech [Republic], Russia, Croatia, Argentina ... Japan, Australia, New Zealand. There’s a lot of places you can go if you really push it. Metal bands can play a lot of places because the interest is so wide. If you play alternative, there are people all over the world who want to see your shows. But, you know, if you go back further, Europe and Asia have been interested in American music for a long time. Even Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and a lot of other jazz musicians had people in Europe who thought they were gods. If you’re different, Europe is not a bad place to be.

DRC What made you decide to visit some of what are arguably the most dangerous places for people to be and for an American to visit? ROLLINS Wait. You say I’ve been to dangerous places. Who told you that? Where’d you get that story?
DRC No problem. I don’t mind being wound up at all. I got that story from Western media. OK. More precise? American media. ROLLINS Yeah. Why did they tell you that story? What’s in it for the people telling you that story? I’m sorry, but that story is [expletive]. I’ve been to these places, spent time in them. You’ve heard this story about how “they hate our democracy!” But that’s just not true from my experience. The men and women in these “dangerous” places love America. They love Americans. They love our democracy. But to answer your question, I’ve gone to these places because life is short and I’m curious. I’d get to these so-called dangerous places, and men would speak to me, but just to ask where I’m from. Look, Miami’s a dangerous place. I come from Washington, D.C. I mean, that’s a dangerous place. Are you kidding? I’m one of those people that, I don’t want to be a xenophobe. I don’t want to be suspicious of people in these places just because I’ve been told I should. I need to see it for myself.
sometimes impossible to do that. On your better days, you’re able to say: “I’m gong to let this place be what it is.” You go to a place like Kenya or Nairobi, I will tell you firsthand: Be careful. There’s a lot of desperation there. Then there are other places you go that it’s been drilled into your head that it’s going to be awful, and it just doesn’t turn out that way. I think if you found yourself in Saudi Arabia, I think you’d find yourself wearing a chador, or some kind of head covering, as a woman. In the fundamentalist parts of the country, you would find that men would really not speak to you. Men and women aren’t able to act on their impulses, because it’s repressive. You might get jumped because some of these guys are so damn demented — not that I defend a physical attack — but there has been so much repression. If I were you, a single female, traveling in a place like Morocco, in Africa, I’d be careful. But women are in danger wherever there are men. It’s sad, but it’s true.

DRC When you travel, are
DRC When you travel with a band, are you able to learn or absorb much about the host regions, towns or cultures? ROLLINS Most of the time, for me at least, it was all about the show. It still is. Quite often, sadly, you go to an interesting place like Japan and you’re in a place that is mostly like America. You see the back of a venue, load in, you see the stage, the inside of the place you’re playing a show. A lot of times, I’d try to get more days in a place like that and take to my legs so I could just bang around and see the place.

AN EXCERPT FROM ‘OCCUPANTS’ Order is disorder. I once saw a kid flip off a cop in a parking lot after a show somewhere in the America. The cop knocked the kid around hard as he put the cuffs on and slammed his head but good as he threw him into the back of the car. I wonder where that boy is now? All it takes is a little push and you’re off. The door of your house gets kicked in late at night and your father is thrown to the ground and humiliated in front of your entire family. Your mother is crying, holding onto your sister who is also crying. Your father is taken away and released a few hours later. You can see the stain where he urinated in his pants. His face is swollen and there is discoloration around one of his eyes. All of a sudden, you don’t want to grow up to be an astronaut or a fireman anymore. Everything becomes clear. The fear dissipates and you are overcome by a sense of calm. A new career path is born. Humans are very faulty mechanisms. Therein lies the beauty, the sadness and the horror. DRC What did you learn about yourself and your country during your travels? ROLLINS I’ve learned about myself that I needed to
do a considerable amount of loosening up and not make so many judgments based on the way be people look. And when you’re in certain places with over $1,000 of camera equipment, I have be careful, but not paranoid. And what I’ve learned about our country is this: The world loves America. Even when we bomb them. Even when we spray them with napalm. Even when we cluster bomb them to the point that they’re still exploding today, like in Laos. I’ve learned that the world loves America and that the world loves President Obama. I also learned that they feared George W. Bush. When he was president, people would ask me: “Tell President Bush not to kill us.”
DRC Let’s talk about your book, Occupants. What were the challenges of pulling together your photos and then writing? ROLLINS The difficulties were many, but the two main challenges were teaching myself Photoshop, and there was the writing. I was capable of learning Photoshop. But I honestly had to write down where the photographs took me in my own life and my past. And a lot of times, they took me to very painful — or at least a very honest and angry, hostile — place. I wrote an article for Rolling Stone Australia — it’s lighter weight than Occupants. I just sat down and wrote the 1,800 to 2,000 words.
