he past year has taken siblings Lee and Elaine Roy back to their roots. After the 2008 country album Good Days, the Roys needed to pick up that torch for bluegrass music they’d set aside. Lonesome Whistle came out a year ago, and the duo has been riding a wave of praise ever since. The two play on Saturday during the Argyle Bluegrass Festival. Mandolin man and fiddler Lee Roy said the duo wanted fans to pick up on the love he and his sister have for the songs on the album. “We wanted people to feel just the passion we have for these songs,” he said. “I really feel like this record was coming home for the Roys.” The Roys aren’t from literal bluegrass country. In fact, the Roys grew up far from Kentucky. The siblings were born in Fitchburg, Mass., and the family later relocated to a small town called Coal Branch in New Brunswick, Canada. Music was always present in their household, mostly traditional country and bluegrass. The Roys’ grandmother played fiddle and the family would sing to her Acadian tunes. “This is the music we grew up on,” said Elaine Roy, who plays guitar. “As far as the record goes, we wanted it to have that natural feel to it. It had a soft flow from one song to the next, and we didn’t think of it as commercial. We just thought of this as the music we wanted to make. We just really put our hearts and our souls into this record.” The duo wrote the album, with some songs gathering dust for two years and others written two weeks before recording. “Coal Minin’ Man” is an ode to the silent, reliable men who forfeited their lungs and their working lives so that their fami-

lies might flourish. “Trailblazer” is Elaine Roy’s tribute to her heroine, bluegrass and country legend Dolly Parton. Lonesome Whistle was recorded with Ricky Skaggs’ bluegrass band, Kentucky Thunder, in Skaggs Place Studio. They recorded as an ensemble, then added percussion by Steve Brewster and

bassist Randy Kohrs. The record sounds more native than the Roys country records. “All those guys — and they are definitely monsters of bluegrass — are just professionals and artists,” Lee Roy said. “In their approach to recording and playing, they always feel like they can be better, and we just want to be able to play like
them. I was talking to [freshman Kentucky Thunder musician] Andy Leftwich because we’re playing a mandolin camp in the summer. Really, with what he knows, you could teach the whole camp. But he was like ‘hey, we’re gonna go and learn all this new stuff!’ They’re always learning what they can play tomorrow.” The duo said they are looking forward to making their Argyle Bluegrass Festival debut. Bluegrass festivals draw enthusiastic audiences, they said, because the music inspires people to dance and whoop. “I think as musicians, that is your goal — to play for an audience, whether you’re playing or singing,” Elaine Roy said. “When you see people in the audience just getting into the music, it’s that affirmation that confirms that this is where you need to be. We love traveling and meeting fans, and we look forward to making new ones. That’s the great thing about bluegrass. Every time you meet someone, they’re your fan for life.” — Lucinda Breeding

f it weren’t for a fossil called Myspace.com, Summer of Glaciers might have never landed in North Texas. Former San Francisco musician and mad scientist behind the electronic-rock project Summer of Glaciers, Ryan Wasterlain, recalls surfing the social networking site when he happened upon a Denton band called the Angelus.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
“They covered this DJ Shadow song that I really loved — I’m a huge DJ Shadow fan — and I loved the cover,” Wasterlain said. “I was in San Francisco, and I just wrote to them telling them how much I liked their stuff. That was pretty much it.” The Denton band met with Wasterlain, enjoyed his music and even booked Summer of Glaciers into some daytime shows. Wasterlain is releasing his latest EP, Small Spaces, through Denton label Gutterth Records on Saturday night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. “Musically, it was kind of a transition period for me,” Wasterlain said of the EP. “I had lived in San Fran for three or four years, and I’d come to Texas a few times and had a really good time and made some really good friends. So the album had to do with the transition you go through, mentally, when you sort of leave everything behind.” A fresh start means opportunities, but it also means letting go of the life you’ve come to know. “I grew up on the West Coast, and this is the first time I’ve lived in Texas. It’s the first time I’ve lived without roommates. The record is kind of about loss and longing, and just coming to terms with it, too,” Wasterlain said. “It’s kind of a sad album.” Wasterlain said living and working in Dallas means affordable rent and more

Summer of Glaciers’ Ryan Wasterlain commands the guitar and some serious circuitry in his live set. Summer of Glaciers releases Small Spaces on Saturday night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. money to make music. It’s also close to Denton, which Wasterlain said is more supportive of music than any place he’s been. “I know when I play a show in Denton that I might be playing a bill that’s sort of weird, you know?” he said. “I’ll be playing a show that has all these unlikely bands playing. And I know that when I go to the show, I know there will be a lot of people out and they’ll be watching every minute. They might be a metal head, but they’ll watch an electronic act.” Small Spaces follows Summer of Glaciers’ 2010 fulllength album, Concentric. Apart from the cross-country move, Small Spaces marks an artistic departure for the artist.
“In my head, it’s very different from what I’ve done in the past,” Wasterlain said. “In the past, my music has been densely layered with lots of reverb. And then it came around to doing this record, I really wanted to strip away a lot of the layers I’d gotten accustomed to. I tried to scale back to a more songwriting style. So there’s one guitar, and then some vocals, which is something that I haven’t done before and I was really skeptical about because I generally do instrumental stuff. But I felt it needed it for me to be able to do the kind of storytelling I wanted to do.” Summer of Glaciers is primarily Wasterlain’s solo project, and he recorded Small Spaces at home.
Glaciers debuts CD at Rubber Gloves In six tracks, Wasterlain builds a lonely suspense. A timid guitar plods and skips while chilly drum loops drape and repeat. Wasterlain’s voice is a contemplative thing when rendered through an electronic haze. From start to finish, Summer of Glaciers relives a past for a bit, then lets it slip through its fingers. In spite of Small Spaces’ landscape being brushed with breezy electronic touches and glassy chime effects, Wasterlain isn’t frozen solid. “I start with the guitar line. I’ve always done a lot of processing on my guitar, but I’m a guitarist first and I feel most comfortable with guitar — moreso than keyboard,” Wasterlain said. “Of course, you can do just about anything electronically. I feel like there is a sound, like it’s icy, but it’s human.” That human sound comes from the vocals, the guitar and the throbbing drum hits Wasterlain samples to create percussion. The CD release show on Saturday will be the first time he’ll perform with a drummer on stage. He had the Angelus’ Emil Rapstine sing vocals during a recent taping on the locally produced Violitionist Session, another first. Small Spaces will be available on Saturday at the show, and at http://soglaciers.band camp.com/releases. Coriolanus (###1/2) Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in this updated version of Shakespeare’s play about a Roman general who succeeds in vanquishing his enemies on the battlefield but fails in winning over either his countrymen or its politicians. Surprisingly timely and action-filled. Excellent cast except for Gerard Butler’s mumbling brogue, with Vanessa Redgrave shining as the general’s ambitious mother. With Jessica Chastain. Rated R, 122 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen The Lorax In this animated film, a 12-year-old boy searching for the key to winning over his dream girl must confront a mysterious, grumpy creature who is protective of his homeland. The result is Risky Business multiplied, as more than a thousand kids show up, the neighborhood is torched and dad’s Mercedes ends up in the swimming pool. Escalating chaos provides plenty of sophomoric laughs and guilty entertainment. Rated R, 88 minutes. — B.A. We Need to Talk About Kevin (#1/2) Tilda Swinton stars in and is wasted in this annoying film with a Columbine theme. She plays a mother with a troublesome son, Kevin (played at different ages by several young actors). His initial reluctance eventually gives way to his own grudging redemption. During the compelling ordeal, the group fights to maintain their humanity — praying, saying Kaddish for the dead, breaking into factions and even making love. ovies are good at showing us our limits. It’s easy to sit in a dark auditorium and confront dangers we might never face in our daily lives. Even cheesy horror films can show us deplorable acts that we know we would never survive. But only a movie like In Darkness, an Oscar nominee for best foreign language film, can reveal the untapped strength in our sense of survival. Based on Robert Marshall’s book The Girl in the Green Sweater, with screenplay from David Shamoon, it is the true story of a group of Polish Jews in German-occupied Lvov, Ukraine, who fought to survive throughout the worst
days of the Holocaust. Agnieszka Holland directed In Darkness, continuing her career of turning out outstanding films (Europa Europa) along with routine commercial fare (Washington Square). She labored to bring to screen this story that defied telling, one that takes place mostly in the sewers below Lvov. She renders a film rife with emotion but one that must have had incredible technical
challenges. Filming underground would certainly have been difficult, but the thought remains that the actual people trapped in the sewers did not have ready access to the candles or flashlights afforded filmmakers. In other words, no matter how bleak it looks in the film, the reality was far worse. Holland picks up her story with the evacuation of the Lvov ghetto, with those Jews not shipped off to a death camp killed on the spot. A group escapes underground, finding refuge in the sewer’s endless labyrinth. Of course they think it will only be short term, but they remain for 14 months. In Darkness concerns itself not only with the collective tale of survival in an area overrun
to lose control. Rated PG-13, 84 minutes. — LAT Gone A woman who escaped a kidnapping a year earlier comes home from a night shift to find her sister
missing and suspects the same serial killer, whom she then races to track down and stop before it’s too late. With Amanda Seyfried and Daniel Sunjata. Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. —

here’s an unspoken mantra for the actors of Music Theatre of Denton on the Campus Theatre stage on a chilly February night: It’s not all about them. Pretty much any decent actor on any stage would say the same. What happens in live theater is never all about the actors. It’s about the relationships between the characters themselves and the relationship they forge with their audience. In Avenue Q, a Broadway blockbuster, the real players are puppets. Big puppets. Puppets with purple male-pattern baldness, fuzzy pink skin and sheepdog-thick hair the color of an Orange Crush. The stars are the puppets who sing. Puppets who fight. Puppets who “hook up,” break up and fall flat on their plush faces trying to figure out how to do life right. Avenue Q is what you might get if you took the alter egos of Sesame Street to group therapy where foul language, frank sexuality and anguish could pave the way to a respectable adult life — frailties included. Director Bill Kirkley said the company took a gamble when it went for the rights to Avenue Q. The musical assumes that the three human characters and 11 puppets are fully adult — they pay bills, have See AVENUE Q on 10

Avenue Q sex and question it later and try to figure out their purpose in life. Avenue Q spins a first act that is unabashedly raunchy and risky, and the characters take on everything from political correctness to closeted homosexuality. In its second act, the musical is sweeter, wiser and utterly full of hope. “We’ve dealt with the content of the show from the beginning,” said Kirkley, who designed audition notices that cautioned actors that they’d be using R-rated words and experimenting with “fullfrontal puppet nudity.” “The show definitely deals with dangerous stuff,” Kirkley said. “And it’s raw. But [actor] Travis [Turek] mentioned redemption, and he’s dead-on about that. This story is about redemption. The show requires something of each of these characters. Are all of them at the exact same spot in life at the end? No. But they’ve all come on a journey.” Avenue Q is fairly simple: Princeton the puppet has set out on his own, seeking independence and fortune on his own terms. He dreams of the bachelor life in the big city, but is sent reeling when he sees the price of rent. He wanders from Avenue A to Avenue Q, the first neighborhood he can afford. It’s a mixed community — people and “monsters” live along the street, as do the people. Human Christmas Eve (Olivia de Guzman Emile) is an Asian overachiever hoping her human boyfriend, Brian (Eric Ryan), will commit. Human Gary is
ON A PUPPET-FINDING MISSION Music Theatre of Denton originally planned to rent the 11 puppets of Avenue Q from Music Theatre International, the company that owns and licenses the musical. The owner had some “puppet packets” available, said local director Bill Kirkley, but all of the inventory was spoken for. “The show is really popular, and a lot of companies are producing it,” Kirkley said. “MTI directed us to Costume World, and they only had a handful of puppet packets available, and they were rented out through 2014.” Avenue Q music director David Pierce contacted Rick Lyon, who designed the puppets for the Broadway show, to see if Lyon had any lead on puppets. That led the Denton company to Cory Gilstrap, of Puppet Palace in Colorado. “He designed a set of puppets for a theater near Denver,” Kirkley said. “We’re the second theater to use them. After we close, they will go back home. They’re his designs, and they’re based on the spirit of the puppets from the original. He just gave them some different characteristics.”
the landlord next door. As soon as he moves to the avenue, Princeton finds more questions than answers. Will Princeton find love with the monster next door, Kate? Will monster Trekkie sink into sleaze? Will Rod, the puppet and Republican banker, come out of the closet and have a more honest — or fulfilling — bond with best bud Nicky? Will someone destroy the Bad Idea Bears? Kirkley said the original show had a small cast, with actors trained to work two or more puppets. “I knew that, this being an MTD show, we’d be attracting people from a singing background; we wouldn’t be attracting puppeteers,” he said. “So I cast more people so that most of our cast would be operating just one puppet.” Some actors team up to work multiple puppet characters. Justin Harmon, who plays the role of the puppet Nicky,
said several cast members bought cheap hand puppets to get started working with them as soon as possible. “Honestly, the hardest thing about these puppets is keeping them over your head,” Harmon said. “You can’t believe how heavy they get, and how fast your arm gets tired. We’ve been working a lot on keeping them up high. And then you have to make sure your puppet’s face is looking down toward the audience. Yeah, your hand cramps up.” Nikki Cloer, who plays the role of Kate, said some puppets are easier to operate than others. “Kate is a rod puppet,” Cloer said. “I work her head and her hand using a rod. The two-person puppets are way harder. [Company choreographer] Stephanie [Felton] pretty much had to choreograph some of their stuff.” Harmon, Turek and company member Ted Minette use two-person puppets. Each man
operates his character’s head and mouth, and slips one arm into a sleeve to create the puppet’s arm. They are each accompanied by another actor who slips an opposing arm into the remaining sleeve. Together, the pairs create puppets with fully articulated arms and hands. Once they got used to puppeteering, Cloer said, they had to animate their characters. “I think the most difficult thing for me was making the puppet as human as possible. You really don’t think about a lot of the things that people do. When Kate’s listening, she’s sort of bouncing. You have to be careful to not just let the puppet go limp and sit there with its mouth hanging open when they’re supposed to be listening to someone. You always have to be thinking of them as a person.” Cast members said they’ve learned that the show’s creators, Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty, weren’t using a gimmick when they included puppets. Minette said people in the audience will cut a puppet more slack than they will for other people. “I get away with so much,” Minette said. “If it were a person carrying on the way Trekkie Monster does, well, everyone would think that was creepy. But when these inappropriate things come out of the mouth of a big, fuzzy orange monster who sounds a little like Cookie Monster, it’s just hilarious. There’s something about the puppets interacting with people — which is
exactly how Sesame Street is done — that makes the puppets a great equalizer. ” Trekkie Monster leads the cast in the rousing song “The Internet is for Porn,” a reality that crushes the naive Kate Monster’s tender ideals. The puppets also indulge in ethnic slurs during the number “Everyone’s a Little Racist,” a song that insists we could all really get along if we admitted our pet prejudices but didn’t let them get in the way of relationships. Erica Cole plays Gary Coleman, the landlord, and said playing a person has been tricky, too. “This part was originally written for Gary Coleman — yes, as in Arnold from [the 1970s television show] Diff ’rent Strokes. He turned down the show. But, yeah, I’m supposed to be a stereotypical black guy. Just like Olivia plays a stereotypical Asian and Eric plays a stereotypical white guy. I ask myself, ‘How far do I push this?’” Cole said that the first act gets right up to the edge of what is considered socially acceptable — especially in community theater. But the second act tempers the sex, the drinking and the frank criticisms of political correctness with characters who have even more humanity — puppet and flesh-and-blood. “Rod, the Republican banker, is like, ‘You know what? I am gay, and that’s OK,’” Cole said. “You do get some warm fuzzies in the end.” Avenue Q opens Friday and runs two weekends.

‘Phantom’ sequel at area theaters
A
ndrew Lloyd Webber didn’t get much fanfare for his sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, a musical titled Love Never Dies. The musical got its first North American showing Tuesday, when Fathom Events broadcast the fully staged production recorded at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. The musical continues the love story of the Phantom and Christine Daae in New York’s playground, Coney Island. After his disappearance from the Paris opera house, the Phantom begins a new life in New York amongst his fellow freaks. The only thing missing from his new
life is musical protegee Christine. In an effort to win back his love, the Phantom lures Christine and her family to this sparkling, unknown world. Webber’s work calls for a 21piece orchestra and a cast of 36, including Ben Lewis as the Phantom and Anna O’Byrne as Christine. A second and final broadcast will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at AMC Theatre at Northpark Mall, 8687 N. Central Expressway in Dallas, and at the AMC Parks at Arlington 18, 3861 S. Cooper St. in Arlington. For tickets, visit www.fathom events.com/performingarts/ event/loveneverdies.aspx.
