Men and women are invited to come compete in age categories ranging from 15 to 50-plus. Megan Thomas, manager of the center, said men in their 60s have competed before. The event started because the center “thought that it would be a fun special event to have,” Thomas said. Several vendors will be present, including Smoothie King, which will provide smoothie samples, and Vemma, a vitamin

Namesake society to perform a feast of music Sunday

ome Sunday, it’s all Bach for the Denton Bach Society. The society, which combines the Denton Bach Choir and the Bach Players, gleans music from the composer’s collection that show off his growth and development over his lifetime. The concert features Cantata 131, “Aus der Tiefen rufe ich zu dir (Out of the depths I cry unto Thee)” from Bach’s early period. At the time he wrote the cantata, Bach was in his 20s and an organist in Muhlhausen. The chorus will also perform a piece from Bach’s Weimar period, a Palm Sunday cantata that captures Bach in a more traditional frame of mind. The piece opens and closes with large choral movements, with arias and recitatives in between. Finally, the chorus will perform a piece from Bach’s Leipzig period, the Suite No. 2 for flute and strings in Bminor. The piece could be considered lighter. Bach wrote it when he was churning out secular cantatas and making music that was more humorous and meant to entertain. The concert features guest artists Jannelle West, flute, and University of North Texas vocalists Laura Chester, soprano; Jennifer Lane, mezzo soprano; Derek Chester, tenor; and David Grogan, bass. Associate conductor Cameron Barr will conduct Cantata 131 and Andrew Justice leads the Denton Bach Players ensemble. Henry Gibbons, music director of the Denton Bach Society, will conduct Cantata 182 as the final work of the program. — Lucinda Breeding

What’s new: The Denton Record-Chronicle’s Web site has just launched a blog dedicated to the festival. Find it at http://nofoldblog.denton rc.com/. Who we’re excited about: Of all things, we’re excited about a daytime event slated for a panel discussion from 1 to 2:30 p.m. March 11. The name might scare entertainment seekers away, but for us, “DFW, the Arts, and the Future: A Roundtable Discussion” is just another shred of evidence that the freak kids relegated to the slacker side of town have vision, and that they want to have a role in the way the city — officially and unofficially — links commerce and city identity with its art. If the flap over flattening a block of Fry Street didn’t show you that Denton’s musicians can think as hard as they can

Pierce the Skin: Selected Poems, 1982-2007 is a collection of 66 poems from the past quarter-century. Poutine, without the trip to Canada

arlier this week we bid a sad adieu to the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver, British Columbia. Some of us will miss duking it out with our northern neighbor, but I, for one, found myself rooting for the Canadians as well. Not only did they snag most the gold medals won at any Winter Olympic Games, they were true sportsmen and women, and good-humored, gracious hosts. Canada has lots of reasons to be proud. In their honor, I say we chow down on a Canadian favorite: poutine — French fries topped with white cheese curds, covered in a beef-based brown gravy. Its origins aren’t precisely known; however, most agree the poutine craze began in Quebec in the 1960s. Now it’s served up in greasy spoons and fast-food chains $$. 940-321-5522. throughout the country. Even women’s figuring skating bronze medalist Joannie Rochette is known to indulge. Canada’s quintessential comfort food is also referred to as one of Canada’s guiltiest pleasures — and is another source of national pride. Fortunately, we don’t have to travel to the Great White North to find it — in fact, we don’t even have to cross the county line. Authentic poutine is on the menu at Vercelli’s Pasta and Pizza in downtown Krum. Why is a French-Canadian dish available at an Italian restaurant in a small North Texas town? Jane Flores, who owns the restaurant with her

husband, Louie, is originally from Quebec and she and her mother brought the recipe with them. Their basic poutine is made from hand-cut French fries. The poutine gravy is imported from Quebec and the white cheddar cheese curds are shipped overnight from Wisconsin. The rubbery cheese has to be squeaky. (Squeaky? That’s the sound the curds make when you bite into them. It means they are extremely fresh.) Vercelli’s also offers an

ticity and freshness of ingredients. Fajita asada burritos and shrimp cocktails aren’t appetizers but do the trick. Cabrito falls off bone in a spicy broth. 2532 Louise St. Daily 9-8. $. 940-380-1208. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop Eatery stakes claim of wide variety in local taco territory. Italian poutine, which substitutes a rich, tomatoey meat sauce for the gravy. You can also try frites sauce or frites italienne, versions of the two recipes without the cheese. (But then it’s not really poutine.) By the way, while you’re at Vercelli’s, don’t forget to congratulate the Italians. They might not have won big at the Olympics, but they sure take the prize for lasagna. ELLEN SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845. Her e-mail address is esackett@dentonrc.com. rive north on Bonnie Brae, past University Drive and the Rayzor Ranch construction. Look right, through a small grove. There lies what’s officially known as Soil Conservation Services Hickory Creek Basin Retarding Pond No. 16, or SCS No. 16. To Irene Klaver, University of North Texas professor of philosophy and religion studies, SCS No. 16 is “Little Lake,” part of her everyday existence and a source of her research, unique as an environmental mix of an ecological habitat in an urban setting. Here is also the source for inspiration and artistic expression of artists, faculty, students and children, which culminated in “Fluid Frontier: The Center for Wildness and the Everyday,” on exhibit at the UNT Art Gallery through March 27. The exhibit challenges our existing notions of how nature is perceived. Klaver’s research suggests the concept of wilderness or “wildness” need not be limited to spaces separate from our living environments. Instead, it can be found “right under our noses and under our feet,” says Victoria DeCuir, assistant director of the UNT Art Gallery. Plans for the “Fluid Frontier” symposium and exhibition have been in the works for a year, according to Tracee Robertson, director of the UNT Art Gallery. It shared interests and efforts with WaterWays 2010, the third biennial conference of the UNT Philosophy of Water Project, directed by Klaver. The conference’s focus was the Trinity River. Klaver’s research inspired EcoArtTech, the digital environmental art collaboration of Cary Peppermint and Christine Nadir,

Recent exhibits, symposiums have artists in tune with Mother Nature who visited Little Lake during their residency at UNT in November. Their time at UNT included working with students and faculty, a kayak trip on the Trinity River and a visit to a water treatment center. These experiences fueled the pair’s creativity, resulting in many of the works on exhibition. “When you are at one with your environment, you become aware, and in that awareness, you grow to appreciate it,” Robertson said. Among the art pieces on display are photographs by Matthew Evans Golden and Cecilia McClain-Shikle. The images include examples of where nature and suburban landscape intersect, including a construction site, a storm drain and Little Lake, with a suburban view as its

backdrop. “When something is displayed in a museum, we conclude someone thinks it’s important,” DeCuir said. “The question is: ‘Why are we looking at these everyday images?’ They must mean something more.” The something more includes attention to the underground infrastructure we often take for granted. EcoArtTech’s concept of nature intermingled with everyday life goes a step further, adding technology to the mix — highlighting the inseparability of culture and nature. Projected on a wall are two computer-screen images disrupted by light orbs, called Google is a National Park and Nature is a Search Engine, by EcoArtTech, courtesy of the Whitney Museum of

American Art. The images juxtapose Google’s homepage with a photograph of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Other EcoArtTech installations include a flash animation loop, Where Does My Water Come From; four prints, Unstable Logo Reload #34, 75, 106 and 22, which represent vector images of wilderness on the 1974-75 city of Denton master drainage plan; and Untitled Algae for Portable Media Players, which offers a magnified view of algae found in Little Lake on media players floating in bowls on an algaefilled stock tank. UNT faculty member Trish Igo’s chalices, Little Lakes, are made from sandy loam clay dug from the edge of Little Lake and items touched in some way by the pond’s regular inhabitants. Visitors must stoop to examine the footed vessels, displayed low to the ground. A highlight of the show is stacked mason jars outside the gallery in the foyer, containing Little Lake artifacts such as twigs, rocks, feathers, mud, candy wrappers and cigarette butts. These “mementos” were collected by children and their families in an artmaking activity sponsored in part by the UNT Graduate Student Art Education Association. The jars represent a “moment in time” in the pond’s ecosystem. “We learned that ‘nature’ is not always a pristine, untouched piece of land; rather, it can be found in a developing area of Denton,” said graduate student Allison Davidson. A virtual work of Internet art, the collaborative efforts of all involved with Fluid Frontiers and the Center for Wildness in the Everyday, can be viewed at http://art.unt.edu/cwe texas. ELLEN SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845. Her e-mail address is esackett@dentonrc.com.

OPENING FRIDAY Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena BonhamCarter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Also showing in 3-D. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — The Associated Press District 13: Ultimatum (##1/2) Hyperkinetic follow-up to the 2004 French action film District B13, again scripted by Luc Besson, about a pair of undercover cops who infiltrate a vicious crime sector in Paris. The setup again is an excuse for a series of elaborately choreographed martial-arts and chase sequences, and they provide the highlights surrounding an otherwise cliched and threadbare plot. Offers some thrills, but nothing new compared to the original. Rated R, 101 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson

NOW PLAYING Avatar (###1/2) James Cameron’s long-gestating computer-generated science-fiction saga boasts impressive special effects and some striking creatures. A U.S. military team travels to the distant moon Pandora to extract a valuable mineral. But once there, they must disrupt the peaceful indigenous people. The skies and mountains of Pandora set the scene for the ultimate battle sequences and for Cameron’s technical crews to render a succession of detailed, highly impressive marvels. Rated PG-13, 162 minutes. — Boo Allen The Book of Eli (##) Denzel Washington does his best to salvage this heavy-handed post-apocalyptic thriller of sorts from the Hughes brothers (Menace 2 Society). He plays a resourceful, spiritual loner who wanders a barren landscape ravaged by war, determined to fulfill a mission that involves a treasured book. There are some interesting concepts here, but as the film reveals its secrets about the hero’s identity and motives, you realize the script takes itself too seriously, and isn’t clever enough to match. Also stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis. Rated R, 117 minutes. — T.J. Cop Out A stolen baseball card sets two detectives (Bruce Willis and

Disney

From left, Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska and Anne Hathaway star in Alice in Wonderland. Tracy Morgan) on the path of a memorabilia-obsessed mobster. Directed by Kevin Smith. — AP The Crazies (##1/2) In this remake of George Romero’s 1973 sci-fi schlock, a small Iowa town is hit with a deadly virus when a chemical transport airplane goes down nearby. When everyone in town starts acting, well, crazy, government troops invade, killing everyone infected. The sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) flee, making for a succession of consistently nerve wracking and violent scenes. Entertaining enough genre flick. Rated R, 101 minutes. — B.A. Crazy Heart (###) Jeff Bridges offers a stunning performance in an otherwise contrived character study about the redemption of a washedup country music star addicted to booze and women, and who finds himself alone and bankrupt — both financially and creatively. Things improve when he meets a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) with a young son, but his vices get in the way. While the story takes a familiar arc, Bridges and a cool soundtrack make it worthwhile. Rated R, 111 minutes. — T.J. Dear John (##) Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried star in this adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ sappy novel about two young lovers who meet briefly and fall in love before he goes off to war. Time and circumstance prevent their reunion, while director Lasse Hallstrom manipulates all circumstances to render a tearstained melodrama. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — B.A. From Paris With Love (##1/2) Luc Besson supplies the story and Pierre Morel (Taken) directs in a story about James Reese (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a seemingly mild assistant to the U.S. ambassador to France. Reese is assigned a partner (John Travolta), and together, they must break up a drug-dealing gang of terrorists. Nonstop violent action that becomes cartoonish when not overly graphic. Rated R, 92 minutes. — B.A. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (##1/2) Chris Columbus directs this heavily effects-laden movie based on Rick Riordan’s young adult novel about young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who learns of his demi-god

status as son of a Greek god and mortal mother. He must travel with his two friends (Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario) to the underworld to rescue his mother, while Zeus, Hades, and his father,

Poseidon, battle over some lightning bolt. Or something. Decently entertaining if not particularly substantial. Rated PG, 119 minutes. — B.A. Shutter Island (###1/2) Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a U.S. marshall in 1954 who travels to the mysterious title island in Boston Harbor to investigate the disappearance of an inmate at the mental hospital run by a pair of seemingly deceitful doctors (Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow). From Dennis Lehane’s novel, director Martin Scorsese renders an appropriately creepy film filled with oddballs, lurking danger and unsettling twists. With Mark Ruffalo and Patricia Clarkson. Rated R, 138 minutes. — B.A. A Single Man (##1/2) Colin Firth gives a commanding lead portrayal in this adaptation of a Christopher Isherwood novel about George, a gay college professor who becomes suicidal after the death of his lover. He is consoled by an impetuous friend (Julianne Moore) and by a student (Nicholas Hoult) who has doubts

about his own life. While Firth feels fully immersed in his character, the film itself is sluggish and more about the scenery than emotional depth. Rated R, 100 minutes. — T.J. The Tooth Fairy (##) A minor league hockey player (Dwayne Johnson), with the nickname Tooth Fairy because he knocks his opponents’ teeth out, is taken away to fairyland and made to redeem himself when he makes fun of fairies in front of the young daughter of his girlfriend (Ashley Judd, remember her?). Lumpish mixture of smashmouth violence and silly fairy gags. Julie Andrews appears as the fairy godmother. With Billy Crystal and Stephen Merchant. Rated PG, 101 minutes. — B.A. The Wolfman Benicio Del Toro plays a man who finds the curse of the werewolf haunting his family when he returns to his ancestral home. With Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. Rated R, 102 minutes. — AP
