hen the first whiff of 35 des Refuses (“35 of the rejects”) emerged about a month back, the scuttlebutt was that the festival organizer, local provocateur and punk rocker Richard Haskins, was thumbing his nose at 35 Denton, the four-day music festival that starts today and runs through the wee hours on Sunday. Haskins isn’t copping to any such nose thumbing, though. “Because these are good bands,” Haskins said. “Why not?” It’s true that a number of the participating bands applied for and didn’t make the cut for any of the 11 venues or two main stages at 35 Denton (including, Haskins said, the venerable Brave Combo). Haskins said the free, twostage lineup is made up of local bands, and includes the party vibes of Denton’s Fab Deuce, the playful folk-pop of Polly Maynard and the bluesy rock of Lovesick Mary. Want a jazz fix? Expert guitarist Bob Hokamp’s Monsters of Jazz should meet the need. When quizzed about who deserves some love from 35 Denton patrons — who won’t have to plunk down any cash to see them — Haskins said: “Brave Combo’s Christmas Show on the ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage Memorial Stage and Hanging Judge Robert Hokamp and his Criminal Courtette on the DeLorean

Should be a rad time.” (Read: Brave Combo might do a few holiday tunes to make up for their absence at the holiday lighting festival, and Bob Hokamp will tear it up with three other musicians.) The miniature festival starts at noon and closes at 9 p.m. on Saturday at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St. Expect music and a lot of bombast. Haskins has given his word that he won’t strip to the skivvies at this event. But, he said, a caveat: “Other hilarious things might happen.” Meanwhile, Jane Piper, the grand dame of Calvary Chapel Denton, continues her tradition of having a Christian rock and folk festival during 35
Denton to raise money for Seeds of Change, a local ministry that serves weekend meals to the needy and the homeless. Calvary Chapel’s doors will be open for the festival Friday and Saturday. Friday, the festival features the city’s well-known Christian acts: Big Round Spectacles, Ashley Gatta & the Free People, Nathan and the Loverlies, and Charity Eden. Saturday, the benefit features Day Sailor, the Stolen Season, Least of These and Don’t Wake Aislin. Doors open at 7 p.m. each night, and cover is $7. Stories, writers take center stage during four-day festival
he Texas Storytelling Festival will commence in the shadow of the much larger and much louder 35 Denton. If the strains of indie rock, hip-hop and electronica burn your ears but you still want to go out this weekend, you can bask in the quiet of the storytelling festival. The event is under one roof this year, at the Denton Civic Center. Regional and state-recognized storytellers will perform and lead workshops, and each of the four festival days are capped off with stories by nationally recognized tellers. MaryAnn Blue will tell what she calls “widescreen” stories from her childhood, and she’ll also deliver some secrets of telling bilingual stories for nonSpanish-speaking storytellers. Musician and storyteller Patrick Ball will indulge his
fondness for Celtic tales, and will flesh them out with his harp. Kim Lehman, a Pennsylvania transplant who calls Austin home, is a musician and puppeteer. She grew up in a Mennonite home, and had an Old Order Amish grandmother. She blends folklore with stories that nudge listeners to have a little more hope. The storytelling association also brings Kevin Kling to Denton for the annual festival, known mostly for his work as a commentator on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. The festival begins today with ghost tales, and continues Friday and Saturday with stories of all sorts of themes. The final concert on Sunday is the traditional conclusion of the festival: sacred stories. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY
Being Flynn (###1/2) In this factbased story, a young man (Paul Dano) goes to work in a homeless shelter. Soon after, his recently homeless father (Robert De Niro) arrives for a bed — prompting a reunion after 18 years of not seeing each other. The interval obviously affects the son, who worries about the sins of the unstable father being laid upon the already shaky son. Admirably directed without artifice or sentimentality by Paul Weitz. Rated R, 102 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Chico & Rita (###1/2) This charming, colorful Oscar nominee for best animated film sports a jaunty jazz and Latin score for a story set in 1948 Cuba. Rita (voice of Limara Meneses), a beautiful songstress, falls for Chico (Eman Xor Ona), a charismatic pianist and hopeless dreamer who promises trouble. With music from Dizzy Gillespie, Bebo Valdes and many others. Not rated, 94 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Crazy Horse (###) Venerable documentarian Frederick Wiseman turns his fly-on-the-wall cameras on the equally venerable Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris. He unobtrusively goes behind the scenes, showing the arduous process involved in consistently turning out an original, entertaining strip show. As usual, Wiseman reveals that much more entertainment can be found behind the scenes than what the documentary is ostensibly about. Not rated, 124 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. John Carter A former military captain is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he reluctantly becomes involved in an epic conflict among the planet’s inhabitants. With Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton and Mark Strong. Rated PG13, 131 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Viral Factor (###) This often chaotic Asian thriller has everything: nonstop action, international settings, car chases, helicopter chases, gun fights and martial arts faceoffs. It even has a plot, sort of, about two long-estranged brothers ending up on different sides when a terrorist group steals a deadly virus with

riends with Kids has much to say about relationships. And since the new romantic comedy by Jennifer Westfeldt (who wrote and starred in Kissing Jessica Stein) has an ultra-modern take on the subject, it covers not only the traditional husband-wife dynamic, but it also appears to branch out into new territory. In breaking her illusory new ground, Westfeldt presents a cast of familiar-looking characters. Their personalities as well as their needs, wants, problems, hopes and dreams all seem as though they could have

come from other romantic comedies of the past decade. The twist comes when the two main characters decide to try something different. And, although unusual enough, the ultimate outcome breaks no new ground and, in fact, falls in line with other predictable romcoms. Westfeldt and Adam Scott play Julie and Jason, best friends since college and who now live in the same apartment building. They are 30-something Manhattan singles who love their
lives. When first seen, their close circle of friends, consisting of two couples (Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph and Chris O’Dowd), joins them in their sybaritic single lifestyle. Flash ahead a few years and the two couples have married and have had kids but are now miserable. Julie and Jason decide that the kid-idea is fine, but the marriage part isn’t. At this point, anyone who has seen a rom-com in the past decade knows where this is headed. So Julie and Jason have sex, she gives birth to a boy, and before long they are happy, single parents living in their own apartments. But, inevitably, those tricky feelings of L-O-V-E start creeping in, causing problems all around, particularly when Jason finds a hot new love (Megan Fox) and Julie seems to connect with a recent divorcé (Ed Burns). Also
predictably, Julie and Jason find an even stronger bond when caring for their new boy. Westfeldt overdraws her plot, seemingly setting up various contrived obstacles only in order to draw out the inevitable. But she mollifies this excess with a fresh, witty, fast-moving script delivered by a charismatic cast, as Westfeldt proves sage in surrounding herself with comic aces Rudolph and Wiig. But even with its chic Manhattan settings, and with a cast full of free-thinking, progressive characters, Friends with Kids eventually concludes with a contrived, cliched ending. But by then, Westfeldt has drawn such a full, loving portrait of her complex but lovably flawed characters, the final predictability can almost be overlooked.

plumb spot on the 35 Denton main stage is thanks to his mix of diplomacy and persistence. “We entered the festival months back,” Avant said. “We didn’t get in. I’m not gonna play with you. I was pissed — really pissed. This is a local festival. It’s happening in Denton. Denton is my city.” Avant is a homegrown hip-hop force, an MC who wrote, cut and packaged every track on Live from the Struggle, an album that gives Avant’s perspective on the world from a very, very specific spot on the map: Southeast Denton. On Saturday, Avant opens on Main Stage 1 — one of two outdoor stages set to handle the biggest crowds 35 Denton will draw over the next four days. He opens for Sore Loser, and hip-hop luminaries Devin the Dude and Bun B. See 35 DENTON on 14

When he hits the stage at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Avant, known as MC AV or “AV the Great” among his fans, will bring his Texas hiphop hard and hot. After the rapper’s ire cooled over his rejection (“I’m a mature artist. I have a fan base,” he says — and he does), Avant dropped in on the funky downtown squat where 35 Denton officials have been planning the blowout. His plan was simple: to press flesh and drop his name as a Denton act worthy of a stage — even as “an alternate.” “I know this is a festival, and not everyone is going to get their slot,” Avant said. “But this is my city. I’m a Denton artist. I basically wanted to meet them, let them know I’m here and I want to be involved.” The meeting was pleasant enough, though Avant had to leave without a guarantee. So he started surfing Facebook, where he has more than 2,000 friends and his music page has picked up 1,029 “likes.” Sure, his numbers are dwarfed by Midlake, Denton’s most visible British-style folk rock outfit, but Avant isn’t one to be discouraged by others’ success. He found a 35 Denton official’s page and sent her a note. He got a note back. “She said, ‘Yeah, you got the slot, and you won’t believe how good the slot is,’” he said. AV the Great would be warming up the crowd for his longtime hero, Bun B. Bun B is a Houston hip-hop artist who is not only a cornerstone of “south side” sound, but a verse man who enjoys the respect of almost every influential rap artist making music today. “Bun B, man. Bun B. That’s UGK [Underground Kingz] and Pimp City, man. And after Pimp died, Bun kept that sound alive. Bun’s verse in ‘Murder’ is what made me want to start rapping,” Avant said. “He had a message.” A lot of artists would have accepted a rejection from the festival and given up. But Avant said he wasn’t willing to let it go. The festival is in its third year in downtown Denton, and in its 14th since starting as an afternoon party and show in

Austin during South by Southwest. Avant said there can be a fine line between ingratiating yourself to people and being a nuisance. “The line is this: For that situation, they’re probably getting thousands of entries at the same time. I think that face-toface is important,” Avant said. “If they say no, you keep doing
your music. “For a long time, people in my community said if you want to do hip-hop, you’ve got to go to Dallas. You go to Dallas, and it’s hard to get in. People coldshoulder you. I have to tell them, ‘My name is good. Y’all probably don’t know me, but I got a name. I got fans.’” These days, Avant is playing a fair share of Dallas shows. He never compromised his vision, though. He claims Denton and his neighborhood as proudly as hip-hop artists claimed their coasts when they were “beefing” back in the days when gangsta rap was king. “People look at me and they’re like, ‘Denton? What are you talking about?’” “I was born in 1986,” he said. “I’m a child of the crack epidemic. I’m a child of 9/11. I’m a child of the recession, a child of the first black president.” From his perch in Southeast Denton — the neighborhood

Chris “AV” Avant will perform at 2:45 p.m. Saturday on Main Stage 1, on the corner of East Mulberry and Austin streets. He’ll take the stage a few hours before Bun B, the Houston hip-hop artist whose work made Avant want to become a rapper.
carved out for Denton’s black community in the 1920s — Avant never saw an abundance of hope for the predominantly black (and now increasingly Hispanic) neighborhood. “Where I live, I look around and I see the police department on one side, the county jail on another and then I’m sitting there between two cemeteries,” he said. “I can tell you that most of the people I grew up with ended up in one place or the other — in jail, on probation or dead.” Live from the Struggle has clocked more than 15,000 downloads since February. Avant started writing the record in 2009. The poems poured out, and the artist created about 200 songs while conceptualizing the album. Live is a journal of sorts — Avant’s personal story from a reflex that would strike many a suburban kid as being morbid. “Live from the Struggle is an album I made because I decided I wanted to get all of my thoughts, all of my feelings out before I die,” he said. “It was everything I wanted my family and my kids to know.” He gathered his beats mostly from East Coast artists, scouring the Internet in five- and sixhour chunks. When he wrote Live from the Struggle, he discovered the theme of the record. He scrapped a bunch of songs and used the songs to tell his story. The record starts with “Texas,” an open letter to the hip-hop community that declares the region a force of culture and a cornerstone of Dirty South rap. “BackDown” details the artist’s perseverance. On the fourth track, “Lifted,” Avant pledges to be the change no one in high places wants him to be and champions his belief that life is deeper than jewelry, rims and guns so often romanticized in hip-hop. (AV levels a cool stare from the album’s cover, dressed in all black with no trace of rap’s vaunted bling. The cover is a statement, he said. He’s an artist who reads the Bible, the Quran and Far East wisdom literature.) “Lifted” is the sole track that

employed a locally built beat, by North Texan Izzy the Kidd. If Live from the Struggle defines the real and metaphorical barriers that surround Avant, the record is somewhat of a prophecy. AV the Great won’t be fenced in, tied down or gagged by assumptions. Other than staging a solid set at 35 Denton, Avant said he hopes he gets to meet Bun B. “If I don’t meet him this weekend, I’ll meet him later,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time. At the show, I’m gonna have my chest puffed out. Then, the next morning, I’m going to get up and get back to work.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
