little more than a month after Denton Community Theatre closed Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a North Texas theater company opens Ethel Waters: His Eye is on the Sparrow in Lewisville. Texas Family Musicals stages playwright Larry Parr’s show about the life of Ethel Waters — a black singer who scaled the heights of Vaudeville, Broadway and, finally, Hollywood. The show follows Waters, born into a troubled family and raised in a slum of Philadelphia, as she endures a series of experiences as a black woman living in Jim Crow America. Jen Percival, an actress now starring in Big River at New York’s Westchester Broadway

Theater, performs in the title role. Percival toured with the Disney musical The Lion King, in which she was the soloist who performed “Circle of Life.” Because of Percival’s schedule, the show will play only one weekend at the new Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Saturday at the MCL Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles St. Tickets cost $26 to $30 and may be purchased by calling 1-800-547-4697 or visiting www. texasfamilymusicals.com. — Lucinda Breeding

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

I

f 35 Denton whet your chops for more local hiphop, you don’t have far to

go. Denton’s Infidelix — a.k.a. Bryan Rodecker — shares a hot mic today with F. Stokes, Spy MC, Les Paul, Dispute 1 and Matt B. Rodecker is a staple of the underground hip-hop scene. He counters Top 40 hip-hop (or should we say hip-pop?) with rhymes that neither hide his paycheck-to-paycheck scramble or his contempt for beatmakers who sidestep hard work and gigs by going the American Idol-style route. His debut, Change, establishes the artist’s yen for blunts and beats, not to mention a turn of

phrase that convicts posturing and posing for the fakery it often is. Infidelix prepares the house at Hailey’s Club for the Buddhist-raised, history-addicted Toki Wright — a fixture in the Twin Cities hip-hop scene who

has done his share of feature rhymes on other artist’s recordings. Wright is the first artist to come out of the Rhymesayers series, which scouts the country for rising musical talent. Details: Doors open at 9 p.m. today. Cover is $10 for ages 21 and up, and $12 for ages 20 and under. Hailey’s is located at 227 W. Mulberry St.

OPENING FRIDAY

Casa de Mi Padre (##1/2) This is a total goof, of course. That’s obvious even before Will Ferrell, dressed in a cowboy hat and a neckerchief sitting astride a horse in the Mexican desert, opens his mouth and utters his first overly enunciated Spanish words. But the premise, which would have been just fine as a sketch, feels as if it’s been stretched awfully thin to fill an entire feature. Ferrell, speaking solid Spanish (albeit with an Americanized accent), stars as Armando Alvarez, a dimwitted ranchero whose successful businessman brother, Raul (Diego Luna), is the star of the family as far as their father (the late Pedro Armendariz Jr.) is concerned. When Raul brings home his stunningly beautiful fiancee (Genesis Rodriguez), it further seals his superiority. But it turns out Raul is a drug dealer locked in a turf war with the powerful Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). Intentional continuity errors, missing frames and cheap production values abound. Rated R, 84 minutes. In Spanish with English subtitles. — The Associated Press Seeking Justice After his wife is brutally assaulted, a man enlists a vigilante group to exact revenge on her attacker in return for a future favor, a decision that throws his world into chaos. With Nicolas Cage, January Jones, Jennifer Carpenter and Guy Pearce. Rated R, 104 minutes. — Los Angeles Times 21 Jump Street (###) The TV show that made Johnny Depp a star is little more than a jumping-off point for this rowdy, raunchy big-screen update that aims for laughs over action and delivers them intermittently. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are surprisingly amusing together as newbie cops sent undercover as high school kids to root out a drug ring. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller take everything — the car chases, the shootouts, the teen kegger, the goofy idiocy of the characters — to the extreme. It doesn’t work all the time, or even most of the time, but it does work enough of the time to make this more enjoyable than most of Hollywood’s unimaginative remakes and updates. Rated R, 109 minutes. — AP

S

ometimes a movie takes an unexpected turn. And how the movie handles that turn could determine whether it succeeds. In a faltering work, the twist may look false and contrived. But when done with a masterly touch, such as in the enchanting new French film Delicacy, the results can be rewarding.

Delicacy Not rated, 108 minutes. Opens Friday at the Magnolia in Dallas and the Angelika Plano.

Stephane and David Foenkinos, two minds that obviously thought enough alike to take chances, wrote and directed Delicacy. What they attempt proves simple enough but is actually brave and daring, because many places in their narrative could easily seem false. But they plow ahead, gradually shifting the film’s overall mood but with a noticeable touch of grace and charm. The shift takes the main character, Natalie (Audrey Tautou), from grief to, if not happiness, then at least a recovered measure of contentment that would have previously seemed impossible to her. In quick succession, Natalie meets and falls for Francois (Pio Marmai). The compatible couple move in together, marry, and everyone looks joyously happy. She suddenly loses him, and it looks like the bulk of the film will be a maudlin treatise on love, loss and recovery. Instead, after a long mourning period in which Natalie mopes around friends, family and co-workers, she one day rises from her desk, seemingly in a trance, and kisses a co-

A widow (Audrey Tautou) finds an odd sort of solace in a coworker (Francois Damiens) in French film Delicacy. worker, Markus (Francois Damiens). She cannot explain her behavior, but it somehow seems natural. Before long, she and Markus do things together. It’s not exactly a love affair but a joining together of two needy souls. The affable Markus — unkempt, balding, paunchy — brings Natalie back to life. Meanwhile, he has trouble believing she would be interested in such a schlemiel as him. Neither can stand their boss, and this aversion gives them much to laugh about and bond over. The officious boss has always wanted Natalie and has

made no secret about it, no matter how uncomfortable it has made her. From there, the directors Foenkinos excel in drawing both their main characters. Natalie and Markus become alive and real, yet believable and never cloying or super-cute as some clumsy American production would mandate. Subsequently, unlike in many movies, you care about both of the lovers/friends until, and including, the charming final scene. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

NOW PLAYING Act of Valor After the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a terrorist plot against the U.S., a team of Navy Seals is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt to foil the attack. With Roselyn Sanchez, Alex Veadov, Jason Cottle and Nestor Serrano. Rated R, 101 minutes. — LAT Friends With Kids (###) Jennifer Westfeldt wrote, directed and stars in this romantic comedy about a woman (Westfeldt) and her best friend (Adam Scott) who decide to remain friends but to procreate together, with the result being a baby boy who naturally brings them together. Witty enough script aided by good overall cast — Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm and Chris O’Dowd. Rated R, 108 minutes. — Boo Allen Good Deeds A successful businessman with a restless fiancee is jolted out of his routine after meeting a struggling single mother who works for the cleaning crew at his office building. With Tyler Perry, Thandie Newton, Brian White and Rebecca Romijn. Written and directed by Perry. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — LAT John Carter A former military captain is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he reluctantly becomes involved in an epic conflict among the planet’s inhabitants. With Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton and Mark Strong. Rated PG13, 131 minutes. — LAT Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (##) There’s little mystery to this island. This 3-D sort-of sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth wears its formula-for-dollars purpose with pride, delivering a dash of cinematic nonsense that represents Hollywood calculation at its shrewdest and most shameless. Dwayne Johnson stars this time as stepdad to a youth (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first movie) whose family has discovered Verne’s sci-fi stories were true. Joining them as they rush from giant lizards and electric eels are Michael Caine, Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — AP The Lorax In this animated film, a 12-year-old boy searching for the key to winning over his dream girl must confront a mysterious, grumpy creature who is protective of his homeland. With the voices of Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron and Taylor Swift. In 3-D. Rated PG. 101 minutes. — LAT Project X (##1/2) Three high school boys plan a medium-size party when the parents of one go out of town. The result is Risky Business multiplied, as more than a thousand kids show up, the neighborhood is torched and dad’s Mercedes ends up in the swimming pool. Escalating chaos provides plenty of sophomoric laughs and guilty entertainment. Rated R, 88 minutes. — B.A.

‘Collage’ brings quintet of local companies together on single stage By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor

“C

ollage 2012: Denton Dance Festival” is a bit of a throwback this year. Lisa Racina-Torre said it’s not because the dance is stale — far from it — but because the festival brings five local dance companies together for a single performance. In that performance, Racina-Torre said audiences will see how Denton dancers have matured in a host of dance vocabularies.

Festival Ballet of North Central Texas dancers will demonstrate their study of a blend of Vaganova ballet and academy owner Hugh Nini’s techniques. Big Rig Dance Collective will go all-out in its signature cross between theater and modern dance. Green Space Arts Collective presents a New York-infused form of modern dance. Jose Zamora, a Texas Woman’s University dance department graduate and artistic director and founder of CholoRock Dance Theatre, mixes music with fiery moves. Denton City Contemporary Ballet continues a tradition of applying everything from jazz to hip-hop to ballet sensibilities. See DANCE on 10

Dance “This is what ‘Collage’ was already meant to be,” RacinaTorre said. “In the beginning, it was a performance of Denton’s dance companies.” For years, though, Denton City Contemporary Ballet staged the festival with its company members and invited professional — or pre-professional — dancers and companies. In the past, Racina-Torre considered the festival a boon to her young and growing dancers. Now, the artistic director said the boon is the community’s. Big Rig is coming into its own, the contemporary ballet company has come of age with a trip to Austria for an international dance festival. CholoRock generates energy and passion on stage, and the Festival Ballet of North Central Texas is deepening its ballet training under the training of Russian dancers Eldar Valiev and Lilia Valieva. “I think Denton might not

Ayu Shimuzu will perform variations from Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and the Black Swan variation from Swan Lake at “Collage 2012: A Denton Dance Festival.” really know how good its young dancers are,” Racina-Torre said. “My students are better than they’ve ever been, and there’s so much going on in all of the studios in Denton.” The festival includes solo performances by Chris Koehl, a hip-hop dancer from Dallas who has performed in RacinaTorre’s production of A Gift for Emma and a recent contestant on the Fox reality series So You Think You Can Dance, and Ayu Shimuzu, a University of North Texas student in a cultural exchange from Kansai Gaidai University in Japan. The festival will feature some premieres. Contempor-

ary ballet dancers Sami Neal and Brandon McGee perform a duet, To the End of Love. The host’s youth company, Denton City Contemporary Ballet 2 performs in Whisper of the Willows and Swing. Company graduate Jasmine Jaramillo choreographed Prosperity in a Can, inspired by Jaramillo’s study of the Great Depression and the idea of just “making it through another day, without.” The company will also perform Neal’s contemporary piece Nicest Thing about three girls in love with the same guy, and a jazz number, Fairytale, a modern-day happily-ever-after with a twist. Racina-Torre restages the dramatic tango El Tango de los Assassinos, which premiered last year. The dancers take on the roles of “the other woman” and “the jilted woman,” making for a continuous tension between the characters. The Festival Ballet will perform a number of classical pieces and variations. Shimuzu will perform variations from Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and the Black Swan variation from Swan Lake. Green Space Arts Collective performs The Quake, a contemporary Celtic piece for six dancers.
