hen Tracy BaysBoothe took over leadership of the Greater Denton Arts Council, she had a lot of ideas from her time spent in Dallas museums. One of the first thing BaysBoothe said at the recent reception welcoming the new arts leader was that the council can do more and be more — even if folks are still skittish about the economy. “I want to throw the doors of this place wide open,” BaysBoothe said. She wasn’t kidding. The most visible assets of the council are the Campus Theatre and the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Performing and Visual Arts. The Campus Theatre is already booked and busy most of the year. But what about the arts center, with its great big banquet

hall and two galleries? The center is open to the public 30 hours a week — 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The building is busy in the offhours, to be sure, but to renters who aren’t necessarily doing art. So Bays-Boothe and the council board are staging “Arts All Night” from 6 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday. Officially, the event is the first event for the council’s capital campaign. But it’s also a sign of the council’s drive to be more and do more. At any given moment during “Arts All Night,” there will be performances and activities — including ones suitable for children. Denton storyteller Shelly Tucker will lead spooky down-
town tours starting at 10 p.m., midnight and 2 a.m. If spooks aren’t your cup of tea, head to Festival Hall for Paul Slavens’ Midnight Ramble — a musical jumble with avant-pop artist Lily Taylor, techno-electro beats by Blixaboy and Cygnus and experimental music by Baby Blood. “Arts All Night” is an idea borrowed from the centennial celebration of the Dallas Museum of Arts in 2003, when Bays-Boothe was working there. The museum stayed open for 100 hours straight. “What was freeing about that, and what changed the way I programmed from there on out, is that there are no rules at 2 a.m.,” Bays-Boothe said in a pre-

The Denton Bach Society, shown rehearsing in 2012, will perform J.S. Bach’s sprawling “St. Matthew Passion” on Sunday.
A highlight ahead of Holy Week
Bach Society to perform ‘Passion’ as Gibbons retires
T
he upcoming concert by the Denton Bach Society is noteworthy for two rea-
sons. The Sunday concert will be the second time the society — made up of a choir with about 40 voices and a baroque orchestra — will perform the entirety of J.S. Bach’s sprawling St. Matthew Passion. And it will be the final performance that music director Henry Gibbons, who took over the podium in 1982, will conduct. “It’s likely that I might come back and conduct as a guest,” Gibbons said. “But it’s time. It’s time for someone else to come in and take over. It’s been a fantastic run.” Gibbons chose something of an endurance project for his final concert as music director. St. Matthew Passion is a sacred oratorio (think opera, but with a no-frills church presentation). The Gospels of Matthew and John were the most popular passions for baroque composers, and Gibbons describes Jesus in
ST. MATTHEW PASSION What: J.S. Bach’s complete passion, with the Denton Bach Society and Denton Bach Players. Soloists are Kim Childs (Evangelist), Robert Ward (Jesus), sopranos Julianna Emanski, Fiona Gillespie, Heidi Dietrich Klein, Beverly Hoch and Katrina Burggraf-Kledas; alto Fabiana Gonzales, tenor Nathan Hodgson; baritones Henry Sanford Gibbons, David Grogan, Chung Chul Woong and Andrew Dittman. When: 3 p.m. Sunday Where: Winspear Hall at UNT’s Murchison Performing Arts Center, 2100 I-35E If you go: Tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 students and seniors. For tickets, call 940-369-7802 or visit www.thempac.com. The concert lasts three hours with an intermission.
Bach’s St. Matthew as calm and purposeful. In Bach’s day, German Christians — Lutheran and Catholic — would have gone to church daily during Holy Week, the week after Palm Sunday. Priests would recount the story from the Gospel of Mark on Tuesday, Luke on Wednesday and John on Good Friday. Gibbons said scholars think St. Matthew was originally written for eight singers and a small ensemble. Today, the piece is staged with a chorus of about 40 voices and an orchestra. The choir sings the passages that represent the disciples, priests and Jews, and soloists take the roles of the evangelist, Jesus, Judas and a few other biblical figures.
St. Matthew retells the story of Jesus’ final hours, from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion. As the evangelist narrates, the chorus and soloist sing responses or commentary. When Bach was living, St. Matthew would have been presented in the church on Palm Sunday. “But there would be an hourlong sermon between the two parts of the Passion,” Gibbons said. “Of course, we’re not going to stick an hourlong sermon in this performance.” The oratorio will be performed in German, from the Lutheran Bible, with English supertitles. — Lucinda Breeding

T
he main character in A Feminine Ending finds that being 25 is tough age — she’s not a kid anymore, but the riches of adulthood aren’t quite within reach, either. Amanda, the main character in Denton Community Theatre’s A Feminine Ending, wants to be a composer. But she’s still in the trenches writing jingles in New York City while her boyfriend, Jack, builds his singing career. Then her mother calls, and Amanda goes home to New Hampshire to find her childhood unceremoniously upended. A Feminine Ending explores the notions of growing up, disillusionment and the pitfalls of going home again. Amanda, played by Betsy Jilka, has to puzzle through the demise of her parents’ marriage. And after spending a night in an apple orchard with her very first boyfriend, Billy (Benjamin Keegan Arnold), Amanda takes stock of where she is in life, where she wishes she could be and what the future holds. Mandy Rausch directs the dark comedy by Sarah Treem (a playwright with writing credits on the HBO drama In Treatment). With Cindy and Buster Maloney playing Kim and David and Luke Provenzano as Jack. Scott Sackett, left, on guitar and lead vocals, Doug Raney, on rhythm guitar, and Deborah McClung Mouser, on lead vocals and harmony, rehearse for the upcoming dinner and concert featuring Denton Rock. Sackett opened Studio 1-4-1 in downtown Krum, a space for seasonal catered dinners and concerts. It’s a joint venture between Sackett and Chad Mudd.
Promoter starts Krum music venue Denton Rock is the house band at Studio 1-4-1 By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer cbreeding@dentonrc.com
Scott Sackett has owned the shop at 141 W. McCart St. in Krum for a while. He was a landlord. When the last business left, Sackett saw an opportunity for two of his ventures — a production, booking and marketing company called Headliners of Texas and his band, Denton Rock. So he opened Studio 1-4-1, a space that looks a little like Banter — the downtown Denton bistro that will close at the end of the month before the space reopens under new ownership. Studio 1-4-1 is still under renovation, and Sackett expects to make more upgrades so that it will eventually have a kitchen
and a bar. It has the kind of atmosphere people like: brick wall interiors, high ceilings and a historical storefront looking out on downtown Krum. Sackett said he’d been using the space for rehearsals for his band, Denton Rock. It’s a sevenpiece band that covers the Eagles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. They put a country-tinged rock styling on the Beach Boys, too. “When I got back into this, I thought, ‘You know, maybe I’m too old.’ I’m 68. Paul McCartney is 71,” Sackett said. “But when we started doing this, I looked out and saw more and more people who were a hell of a lot older than I am, and they knew all the words to the songs. They were, ‘Help me Rhonda, yeah.’ It’s the songbook of their lives.” For now, Sackett said the plan is to open the space occasionally for reservation-only events. “I had this space, and we re-

hearse here,” Sackett said. “We looked around and said, ‘Why in the hell are we schlepping all this stuff to Banter when we’ve got this gorgeous space here?’” “Every quarter, we will play here. Chad Mudd will come over and cater it [from Mudd’s Good Eatin’] and we’ll do a dinner show and a concert,” Sackett said. “And in between, my job is to book this band at corporate events. That’s what I want to do. We don’t want to go to nightclubs in Dallas. We’ve been
there, done that, got that Tshirt. No one is interested in doing that. We’re a 90-minute concert band.” The next dinner and concert is Sunday. Sackett thinks there’s a market for a music venue in town. “Here we are, it is 8:30 at night,” Sackett said, looking at the dark intersection of the downtown square. “The four corners of Krum has 5,000 to 8,000 cars going through it. There’s nothing in town for them to stop.” Much of Krum’s downtown business closes at about 5 p.m., just when the traffic starts to pick up. “You get here at 8 in the morning, and you’ll be sitting in your car for 20 minutes,” Sackett said. “Krum is on the cusp of exploding. … I think the greater Krum area is around 10,000 people. When I came here, it was at about 1,020. We’re trying to be here and create something very, very nice.”

Bobby Cannavale, Giselle Eisenberg and Jennifer Garner are the family Danny Collins didn’t know he had in “Danny Collins.” his hair, knowing how white hairs ill become a fool and jester. But he still indulges in the stereotypical rock star behavior of excessive drinking and drug use. At Danny’s surprise birthday
party, Frank gives Danny a letter John Lennon wrote him in 1971. The former Beatle had read an interview with the promising young rock star and had written him with Polonius-like encouragement. But the letter had been stashed away all these years by an unscrupulous journalist and was retrieved only recently by Frank. The affair of the letter (based on a true event) propels Danny to reassess his life, resulting in a cross-country trip to New Jersey to visit the son he never knew. His blue-collar son Tom (Bobby Cannavale) naturally rejects Danny, setting up Fogelman’s second and third acts as the fa-
ther tries to win back the son and his wife, Samantha (Jennifer Garner), and their 7-year-old daughter. Fogelman peppers this mostly contrived latter part with quick repartee between Danny and his hotel manager Mary (Annette Bening) and between Danny and his grudging new family. Naturally, forgiveness proves an uneven and arduous process. Fogelman understands the unbelievability of making a quick transformation, so he burdens his narrative with the mysterious and dreaded movie disease that opens the doors for allaround acceptance, leaving everyone changed for the better. For the most part, Fogelman succeeds in taking an obscure event and turning it into an engaging, dramatic, yet often funny film with something to say about lost chances and nagging regrets.

League borrows from ballad of Bonnie and Clyde for charity ball By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
T
he Denton Benefit League will be a little bad to do a lot of good. The nonprofit agency borrows the theme for its spring charity ball from a dastardly duo. “The theme is 1930s with a nod to Bonnie and Clyde,” said ball chairwoman Olivia Lilley. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are the legendary Great Depressionera bank robbers who have a special spot in Denton County history. The downtown bank building in Pilot Point was the set for the famous bank robbery scene in the 1967 film starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. Lilley said the ball will skip the gore and play up the glamour and sophistication of the duo’s time. Patrons are invited to dress in costume — fitted suits and fedoras for the guys and body-skimming skirts with low hemlines and cloche hats for the women — or use the 1930s for inspiration. Black tie is optional. The April 18 ball will be at the Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott Hotel at Champions Circle in Fort Worth. Lilley said patrons will enter through the vault — a made-over entrance — and pass by the bank windows (think bars lining the counter) before hitting the ballroom. Ball training, designed the centerpiece — a tribute to one of Denton’s historical banks (hint: on Hickory and Locust streets). The ball will start with cocktails and will segue into a seated dinner. And how could the benefit league throw a 1930s-style party without apropos music? Dallas party band Emerald City will return to the ball. The 13-piece band covers of pop-rock from the ’70s to the present. The entertainment tribute to the era comes from Dallas dance company Rhythmic Souls. The tap company will present two numbers from its show Legends Never Die. Patrons will have the evening to check out the silent auction, which covers all the price points — from affordable merchandise to extravagant trips and travel. The silent auction has something for the sports lovers to foodies with adventurous taste. The ball still includes a raffle. This year’s raffle is for 100 bottles of wine, and only 100 tickets are for sale. Each raffle ticket costs $100. “The wines are donated by local businesses, restaurants and from private wine collectors,” Lilley said. “It’s one of our first dividable raffle prizes. More than one person can go in on a ticket and then, if they win, they can split up the wine as they like.” Lilley said the ball will feature an artifact to fascinate both the history buff and true crime hound: the Bonnie and Clyde “death car.” The attraction is on the ball flier, with credit to the Pilot Point Rotary Club and an invitation for patrons to judge for themselves as to the authenticity of the 1934 Ford V-8. The ball raises money the league then returns to the community through grants to Denton County nonprofit agencies. The ball is billed as the only formal ball produced by a Denton organization each year. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877 and via Twitter at @LBreeding DRC.

It’s a shame that the films do so little to stray from well-worn YA paths. Based on Veronica Roth’s novels, the Divergent films are set in a walled, post-apocalyptic Chicago. Much of the drama of Insurgent takes place in a virtual reality in which Tris (Shailene Woodley) frequently faces various simulation challenges. The plot progresses in a repetitive cycle of escapes, surrenders and rescues. The result is a bigger, glossier and bettermade action film with less embarrassing fight choreography, but any appeal still depends entirely on the talent of its cast.
