Cave’s ‘Heard’ collaboration debuts at UNT

t’s taken months, but the University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts will unveil the work of its 2012 fellow today. Heard will bring a curious “herd” of “sound suits” to life on the lawn between Curry Hall and the UNT Art Building at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. Sound suits are an invention of Cave’s — a hybrid of fiber art, sculpture, puppetry and performance art. Cave has constructed these suits for years, and the fantastic creations are meant to be worn by a performer who moves while wearing them, thus creating the sound each suit is designed to make. Cave, an installation artist and former member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, worked with UNT art, fashion design and dance students to create 30 sound suits that, in performance, will imitate the look and sensation of horses. Members of the community also helped make the suits. The 30 suits include horse heads covered with raffia over an armature of metal and hardware cloth, as well as horse bodies covered in raffia.

In an interview during his first few days at UNT, Cave said he looks to create stimulating moments that stop viewers in their tracks. “If you came around a corner and saw a herd of horses downtown, wouldn’t you just have to stop and watch?” Cave said.

Creative Art Studio hosts its Spring Art Opening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 227 W. The gallery features paintings, stained glass and blown glass, fiber arts, pottery, jewelry, photography, and both wood and metal sculptures.

The studio features local and regional artists and provides an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional works. Robin Huttash, artist and owner of the studio and gallery space, said that she is proud of the gallery and the artists who participate in the shows. “In a time when there are so many imports available, there is something absolutely wonderful about having a place

that can represent local artists and their beautiful works,” Huttash said. “I am very proud that everything in the gallery is local and handmade.” The gallery also features art made from “upcycled” materials — Etsy-speak for the trend in making found, discarded or reused material more valuable by incorporating it into art. UNT musical has a high time with ’30s anti-drug film

imothy Wilson saw an opportunity to riff on a particular campaign of fear when he collaborated with students to create Reefer Madness. In 1936, the film Tell Your Children was released. Its intent? To cast a cautionary tale against marijuana — or “reefer” — cigarettes far and wide. It was financed by a coalition of church members who wanted to teach parents about the dangers of smoking marijuana. It became a cult classic. The film inspired a 1998 musical. The musical inspired the University of North Texas staging by Wilson, a UNT Department of Dance and Theatre Arts faculty member, who created the local musical in collaboration with co-director and UNT student Tony Capps. Students took the lead in designing the stage, lighting, sound, hair and makeup. A recent UNT graduate is the choreographer. Guest artists Ric Leal and Hans Grimm are the costume designer and musical director, respectively. Wilson said a play wouldn’t have succeeded. The subject matter calls for a musical treatment to reduce the hysteria and ridicule the extremist message. It’s the kind of play that has to go over the top to win its audience, Wilson said.

“And it does go over the top at every opportunity,” Wilson said. “There are tender moments — but the chance for exaggeration is wonderful to play with.” Performances are 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All

Gods among ants ‘Wrath’ effects, story improve on laughable ‘Clash’ By Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

hat’s the old saying — “3-D fool me once, shame on you, 3-D fool me twice, shame on me?” Clash of the Titans was a nearly humorless, overly digitized remake of a piece of sword-and-sorcery cheese from the 1980s, an inoffensive bigbudget trifle whose biggest sin was a post-production conversion to 3-D. The Titans sequel wasn’t converted, so the 3-D is a lot better. And the director of Battle Los Angeles and the screenwriters give it a lighter touch, a bit of mythic whimsy amongst all the muddle about gods, demigods, the father of gods and the end of the age of gods. In a boulder-strewn Greek past of volcanoes, but no trees, Perseus (Sam Worthington, stoic as ever) is living the life of a village fisherman and sin-

gle dad to Helius (John Bell). The kid is growing up without religion, without his grandpa. That’s because Perseus knows “There’s no such thing as ‘good gods,’” and his dad, Zeus (Liam Neeson, giving more than Titans deserves), is entirely too busy for grandparenting. He’s too busy narrating. “The time of the gods is ending,” Zeus narrates. Hades (Ralph Fiennes, always interesting) aims to hasten that. “You’re sweating like a human, brother,” Hades purrs. “Next, it’ll be tears.” Hades traps Zeus in the underworld with the help of another of Zeus’ sons, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), god of war. Perseus must round up a team and go get ’em, before god of gods Kronos cracks free and gods and men are drowned in a

sea of lava. First among them is Andromeda, a vision in blond hair and armor played by Rosamund Pike. Bill Nighy steals the movie as Hephaestus, blacksmith and armorer to the gods. He makes the old tinkerer a crackpot who carries on conversations with himself, Gollum-style. Then, there’s the disreputable son of Poseidon, “The Navigator” Agenor, given a bemused spin by Toby Kebbell. He’s a reluctant recruit. “Would you do me a favor?” he asks Perseus. “Go to hell.” So we know where this is going, and we know who’ll be in the final brawl. But director Jonathan Liebesman and company keep this stripped down (few gods, not too much dialogue) and manage a few surprises and a little fun on the trip. They even trot out Danny Huston as Poseidon, in a beard and get-up that remind us that his dad, John Huston, once played Noah on the big screen. Yes, this Titans is going to you-know-where. At least this one manages to make the 3-D ride worth the destination.

he Texas Woman’s University School of the Arts is no stranger to experimentation. The theater department has staged one show in complete darkness — The True History of the Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, the Ugliest Woman in the World — and taken patrons on a trip that set short plays in different campus locations. Students in the visual arts program exhibited embellished brassieres to raise breast cancer awareness. The university’s music program nurtures a Monster Flute Choir. When it comes to the arts, TWU is an enterprising college. Today marks the return of an event tailor-made for the art enthusiast suffering from spring fever: the TWU Arts Triangle Walking Tour. The event is a provocative trip through the â&#x20AC;&#x153;arts triangleâ&#x20AC;? on the campus, starting at the Pioneer Woman statue and moving from performance to performance. Once tourists arrive at the Pioneer Woman statue, the TWU science department â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a guest of the arts school at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event â&#x20AC;&#x201D; presents â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Magic of Chemistryâ&#x20AC;? show. With carefully planned interactions and maybe some sleight of hand, science faculty and students will draw out some â&#x20AC;&#x153;oohsâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;aahs.â&#x20AC;? As soon as the magic is over, tourists will cross the Pioneer Circle to the south, stopping at the front of the Fine Arts Building, where theater students will perform a short play. From the play, tourists will move on to the Ann Stuart Science Complex, where a student drum circle from the music department will play on the lawn between the science complex and the Bralley Annex. The rhythm continues as the crowd moves to the lawn south of the science complex, where Wrkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;n Progress will perform a hip-hop piece by choreographer Alex Benavides. The performers will shift between fast, high-energy dancing and slower movements. Attendees then will walk along the north end of the science complex, where the duo of Benson Lee and Daniella Toll will be playing a selection from Fifteen Duos for Two Violins op. 85 by J. Mazas. CholoRock Dance Theatre was founded and directed by TWU dance graduate Jose Zamora. Set to the music of the Mexican state of Veracruz, Brujas promises passionate choreography to folk music. (Brujas is Spanish for â&#x20AC;&#x153;witches,â&#x20AC;? so some kind of spell will surely be cast.) After guests are seated, the main performance, The Flute on Its Feet, will begin. The performance includes classics of the flute repertoire, new works by American composers, and pieces choreographed for flutist and dancer Zara Lawler by C. Neil Parsons. Students from all disciplines from the School of the Arts will participate in the performance. The audience should look for more than dancers, musicians and actors. Site-specific pieces can be spied during the walk, including works from Tanya Synarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sculpture program and by students of Colby Parsonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ceramics program. n the heels of last year’s fourth annual Dia de los Toadies, the band’s Texas music festival, the Toadies got to work on some new tunes. What resulted was supposed to be released as two separate EPs, but the band decided to combine them and release a new album. Fans can look forward to the LP at the end of the summer, following this spring’s nationwide tour supporting Social Distortion. The band hasn’t toured as an opener in more than 15 years but means to rock all venues along the way, as the group was handpicked to join the tour. “It’s really cool. We’ve been listening to them for years,” Toadies drummer Mark Reznicek said of Social

playing together for years, members are still evolving when it comes to writing and playing. Reznicek says that the new album still has the classic Toadies sound but adds that the band did try to branch out a bit with the new music. “It’s still really rocking,” he said. “The old style rock ’n’ roll that the kids have always liked.” The new LP features horns on one track, “Rattler’s Revival,” courtesy of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and new bassist Doni Blair. The band will be touring through the end of May and fans can look forward to the fifth annual Dia de los Toadies, slated for Labor Day weekend. — Megan Radke
