Trying to connect with past relationships, he meets resistance from his longtime friend (Olesya Rulin) as well as others. The explanations and reasons behind the murky mystery come grudgingly, and confusingly, from co-writer and director Aaron Rottinghaus. With Bruce McGill and Joey Lauren Adams. Not rated, 85 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen The Kid With a Bike (###1/2) This social drama from Belgium’s Dardenne brothers, Jean-Pierre and Luc, follows a boy left in a state orphanage by his father. The youngster maniacally tracks down his father, who turns out unable to provide for him. A well-meaning woman steps in to foster the young borderline sociopath, who causes her constant trouble. Gut-wrenching film deftly examines the perils of childhood with all its unexpected dangers. Not rated, 87 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. Jiro Dreams of Sushi A documentary portrait of 85-year-old Jiro Ono, considered by some to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. In Japanese with English subtitles. Rated PG, 81 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — Los Angeles Times Titanic in 3-D (####) If any film should be redone in 3-D, it’s Titanic. And if any filmmaker should be the one doing the redoing, it’s James Cameron. And so ironically, for a film that hasn’t got an ounce of understatement in its three-hourplus running time, Titanic in 3-D is really rather subtle and finely tuned. Cameron has stayed true to the content of his 1997 film, the winner of 11 Oscars including best picture — and that includes his clunky script filled with hokey dialogue and broad characters. What also remains intact is the earnestness of Titanic, the absence of snark or irony, and the sensation that you’re watching a big, ambitious, goodold-fashioned spectacle that can withstand the test of time. With Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Rated PG-13, 195 minutes. — The Associated Press

NOW PLAYING Act of Valor After the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a terrorist plot against the U.S., a team of Navy Seals is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt to foil the attack. With Roselyn Sanchez, Alex Veadov, Jason Cottle and Nestor Serrano. Rated R, 101 minutes. — LAT Casa de Mi Padre (##1/2) This is a total goof, of course. That’s obvious even before Will Ferrell, dressed in a cowboy hat and a neckerchief sitting astride a horse in the Mexican desert, opens his mouth and utters his first overly enunciated Spanish words. But the premise, which would have been just fine as a sketch, feels as if it’s been stretched awfully thin to fill an entire feature. Ferrell, speaking solid Spanish (albeit with an Americanized accent), stars as Armando Alvarez, a dimwitted ranchero whose successful businessman brother, Raul (Diego Luna), is the star of the family as far as their father (the late Pedro Armendariz Jr.) is concerned. Intentional continuity errors, missing frames and cheap production values abound. Rated R, 84 minutes. In Spanish with English subtitles. — AP The Hunger Games (###) Entertaining and suspenseful yet sometimes overwrought rendition of Suzanne Collins’ popular futuristic novel about a young woman, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), and a young man, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), cho-
sen to represent their district in the annual Hunger Games, a survival competition to the death among 24 young people. While focusing on Katniss, director Gary Ross keeps the blood and gore to a minimum in the hunt sequences yet prolongs the initial phase in the Emerald City-like capital. Should please the novel’s fans. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. — B.A. John Carter A former military captain is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he reluctantly becomes involved in an epic conflict among the planet’s inhabitants. With Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton and Mark Strong. Rated PG13, 131 minutes. — LAT The Lorax In this animated film, a 12-year-old boy searching for the key to winning over his dream girl must confront a mysterious, grumpy creature who is protective of his homeland. With the voices of Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron and Taylor Swift. In 3-D. Rated PG, 101 minutes. — LAT

T
he Metropolitan Opera continues its high-definition, movie-house broadcasts as a way to reach beyond New York City and into the rest of the opera-loving country. At 11 a.m. Saturday, locals can see Anna Netrebko make her Met debut singing the title role live in Manon at the Cinemark Denton at 2825 Wind River Lane. In the production directed by Laurent Pelly, principal conductor Fabio Luisi also makes his Met debut and Piotr Beczala makes his role debut as the ardent chevalier des Grieux. Paulo Szot sings Manon’s cousin Lescaut and David Pittsinger sings the Chevalier’s father, the Comte des Grieux. The Met: Live in HD presentation of Manon will be hosted by opera singer Natalie Dessay. — Staff report
MOVIES Continued from Page 5 Mirror Mirror An exiled princess (Lily Collins) enlists the help of a group of diminutive bandits to take back her usurped throne from an evil queen (Julia Roberts) in this retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. With Armie Hammer and Sean Bean. Rated PG, 106 minutes. — LAT Salmon Fishing in Yemen (###1/2) Emily Blunt plays a public relations agent who recruits a British bureaucrat (Ewan McGregor) for a seemingly crazy scheme hatched by a Yemen sheikh (Amr Waked) to bring salmon fishing to his arid country Yemen. Kristin Scott Thomas plays a high-energy, foulmouthed government liaison who knows how to make things happen.
Witty, entertaining and fast-paced confection. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — B.A. 21 Jump Street (###) The TV show that made Johnny Depp a star is little more than a jumping-off point for this rowdy, raunchy bigscreen update that aims for laughs over action and delivers them intermittently. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are surprisingly amusing together as newbie cops sent undercover as high school kids to root out a drug ring. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller take everything — the car chases, the shootouts, the teen kegger, the goofy idiocy of the characters — to the extreme. It doesn’t work all the time, or even most of the time, but it does work enough of the time to make this more enjoyable than most of Hollywood’s unimaginative remakes and updates. Rated R, 109 minutes. — AP
Save yourself the trouble: Skip this stale ‘Reunion’ By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
You probably haven’t been lying awake in bed at night wondering whatever became of Stifler and Oz and the rest of the horny kids from the original American Pie movie. Yet here they are, after 13 years and a couple of sequels, in American Reunion. And they’re more bland than bawdy these days. That’s part of the joke: that they (and we) aren’t in high school anymore, that we all have to grow up and function as adults with responsibilities and whatnot. We can’t spend all our time thinking lascivious thoughts about pastry. That’s just adolescent. But that doesn’t make for a very fun or funny movie; instead, American Reunion relies on cliches about nostalgia, forced tension over strained friendships and melodrama about the rekindling of first loves. Jim and Michelle (Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan)
American Reunion Rated R, 105 minutes. Opens Friday.
are now married with a 2-yearold son and zero sex life. But they return to their Michigan hometown for a 10-year high school reunion that’s being staged three years late because supposedly no one could get their act together on time. It’s a plot contrivance, leave it at that. There they run into the old gang, including Chris Klein as Oz, who’s now a slick sports anchor, Eddie Kaye Thomas as the sophisticated Finch and Seann William Scott as Stifler, who’s still ... Stifler. Tara Reid and Mena Suvari show up as personality-free blonde robots Vicky and Heather, respectively. And really, the women get short shrift here. They’re either boring good girls or sexually aggressive nymphets, with no shadings of substance or complexity in between. Harold & Kumar creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden
Schlossberg take over as writers and directors but the sense of unpredictability that infused their own franchise never surfaces here. Plus, this kind of raunchy, hard-R comedy has been done — and done better — countless times since American Pie debuted and seemed fresh in 1999. Movies like The 40Year-Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and even the recent hockey flick Goon (which also stars Scott) have found a way to push boundaries more daringly while simultaneously finding an unexpected, resonant sweetness. American Reunion achieves neither of these extremes, and playing intrusive, cloying music to signal that certain moments are supposed to be special isn’t terribly persuasive. The few moments the film gets right — which is true of the whole series — involve Eugene Levy as Jim’s awkward but well-intentioned dad. A grieving widower, he misses his son and longs for the companionship of a woman once more. He has a couple of moments with Stifler and even with the notorious Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge, brash as ever) that bring a temporary loveliness to the proceedings.

enton families will have lots of chances to meet a certain bunny and gather Easter treats this weekend. And right now, the National Weather Service is predicting sun on Saturday and just maybe a bit of rain on Easter. (Hey, a little rain will keep you close to the kids’ pastelwrapped Reese’s peanut butter cups and jelly beans. Come on, you have a whole new season to atone for sins of the chocolate kind.) Children from toddlerhood to age 16 can find an Easter egg hunt, and children with disabilities are invited to join hunts in Denton and Corinth. All you need to bring is a bag or basket, sunscreen and — for some hunts — a few dollars to take photos with the Easter bunny. Take your pick from our roundup, and enjoy the candy. See EASTER on 10
